ACC, SEC, Big 12 Mulling Expansion

      Tulane in mix?

The college football world has been quiet for the past few years since realignment last occurred in 2014. But rumors have been swirling over the past few months that the ACC, SEC and Big 12 conferences are mulling expanding their footprints once again. The ACC & SEC both currently sit at 14-team memberships, but they may be looking at becoming the first 16-team "super-conferences," which would likely lead to record revenue gains for their respective members. The Big 12 however sits at 10 teams, and may be looking at expansion simply to get back at 12 teams, thus regaining a conference championship game.

Over the past few years Tulane University has scheduled numerous sporting events with members of Power 5 conferences, particularly with members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. After failing to schedule rivalry games for the 2016 season, the Green Wave football team played 3 ACC teams in their non-conference schedule (Syracuse, Boston College, North Carolina). They have a rematch w/ Boston College coming up in a few weeks this season, and recently scheduled a home-and-home series w/ the Miami Hurricanes. The Wave will travel to Miami for the first game next season, then the Hurricanes will play in New Orleans for the second game in 2019. They are also rumored to be working on another home-and-home series with Virginia Tech for the next few seasons. With all this in mind, it makes sense to think that the ACC may be making a serious push at adding Tulane University to its ranks.

And it makes sense. Tulane has the academic chops to fit right in the conference. The football team has been much more competitive as of late, and much of Tulane's student body originates from the New England region of the United States (in areas where ACC members Syracuse, Boston College & Pittsburgh call home). The football team also occupies the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, an NFL-sized stadium that would instantly become one of the ACC's largest. Could the ACC be making a push toward extending its recruiting trail into SEC Territory?

But the ACC isn't the only ones reportedly interested. The Big 12 Conference is also interested in adding Tulane, as it would give the conference a big-time city to host events in, as well as extending its recruiting trail into the Gulf Region. Teams such as Texas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are all on board for adding the New Orleans-based school, as they feel it would greatly boost the conference's academic reputation. The Big 12 is interested in making Tulane its own Vanderbilt. And it could be possible. Who they would add along with Tulane is another issue.

As for the SEC, Tulane is reportedly "very interested" in joining the conference. But the SEC may not necessarily be returning the favor. The school's already located in vested territory, and some SEC members may not be on board with the addition. It all remains to be seen on their end...

Stay tuned for more coverage of potential conference expansion.

        Spotlight: The Gandy Brothers

Brothers Aaron (83, left) & Chris (87, right) both play WR for the Wave.

Oftentimes in sports we see siblings play the same sport, but for different teams. We have the Manning brothers Peyton & Eli in the NFL, and the Gasol brothers of the NBA, as examples. Sometimes siblings will compete together for special events, but usually compete as individuals. Think of the Williams sisters (Venus & Serena) in tennis. But rarely do we see siblings play not only the same sport, but also on the same team. For example, brothers Carson & Jordan Palmer competed together as members of the Cincinnati Bengals in the late 2000's. But it happens most often in college athletics. And for obvious reasons. Sometimes siblings grow so close that they do not want to be separated. Sometimes it's more convenient for the family that siblings attend the same school. And of course there are less obvious reasons.

Before they were drafted by the New England Patriots & Tennessee Titans respectively, brothers Devin & Jason McCourty dominated the secondary together at Rutgers.

And then there are college basketball's "Terrific Twins." The Morris brothers at Kansas, and the Harrison twins at Kentucky.

But in 2017, there is a new set of brothers "running things." Brothers Aaron & Chris Gandy found themselves attending Tulane University under drastically different circumstances. Aaron, a highly-touted recruit coming out of junior college 4 seasons ago, had many schools on his radar. Tulane wasn't his first love.

Aaron Gandy: "To be honest, Tulane wasn't high on my list at first. I really wanted to go to Wisconsin. I grew up a die-hard Badgers fan, and they recruited me hard. But when they told me they wanted me to play LB or TE, I had to rethink a few things. I had been a wide-out my entire life."

His brother Chris, however, had to fight for recruiters' attention.

Chris Gandy: "Recruiters weren't really paying attention to me when I came out of high school. I literally had to mail coaches my highlight film for them to notice me. And even then, I only got a few bites."

Lucky for him, the right coach came calling.

Chris: "Thank God for Coach Willingham. If it weren't for him, I don't know where I'd be."

How Aaron and Chris ended up where they are is interesting. But the story line before that is far more intriguing. Both grew up in the small town of Neenah, Wisconsin, not far from Green Bay. They lived a good life until about their teenage years. When Chris was 14 years old (Aaron, a year older, was 15), he moved with his father to Texas, after their parents divorced. Aaron chose to stay with his mother in Wisconsin, and for four years the two were separated. As both would say, those years were rough.

Aaron: "It was rough not having a brother for those four years. I mean, I had a brother, but we weren't close. We didn't get to play ball together like we always did. Couldn't go to the movies. Couldn't hang out with friends. Couldn't do anything together."
Chris: "We could only do things together when we were in the same town. It sucked."

As Aaron said, both played sports a lot. However their plans to play high school football together were dashed when Chris moved. They still kept in contact, and talked whenever they could. Be it football, girls, or just life in general. They built good lives where they were, but still missed each other.

        WR Aaron Gandy

While Chris was a junior in high school in Texas, Aaron had graduated high school in Wisconsin and decided to attend junior college for a year. He knew he wanted to go to a top-level university, and after going to Wisconsin didn't work out, he wanted to get his GPA up. He decided to play JUCO ball for a year, then try to enroll at a larger program. Meanwhile, during that year of junior ball, Chris was finishing up high school, getting ready for college. Aaron had committed to Tulane after coming to the 2014 Homecoming Game vs. Tulsa. According to him, it came down to a few schools.

Aaron: "After going JUCO for a year, Wisconsin recruited me again. But they still wanted me to change positions. I wasn't sure, so I focused on a few other places. When Coach Willingham said I could play receiver at Tulane, I was intrigued."

After talking with the coaches, visiting the campus, and going to the Homecoming game, he was enamored.

Aaron: "I have no regrets. I love this team, I love this school, and I love New Orleans!"

When Chris was looking for schools, not many came calling. And the ones that did call were in the FCS Division. He wanted to play FBS ball like his brother, so he got desperate. With the help if his high school head coach, he sent video copies of his highlight film to numerous schools in the area. Texas, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Southern Miss, Arkansas State, Rice. All of them said "no." Then one day luck happened. One of the position coaches at Rice was good friends with the WR coach under Coach Willingham. After they talked one day Chris's tape was on its way to New Orleans. Willingham sat down with his receivers and watched the tape. He didn't think much, but the reactions of the players said it all.

Coach Willingham: "Honestly when I saw the tape, I didn't think anything much of it. Just seemed like an average player to me. Luckily for Chris, the receivers on the team thought otherwise."
WR Justin Fountain: "When I saw the tape I honestly thought the kid could play ball. We were thin at receiver at the time, so I told Coach to go for it."

One of the other receivers in the room during the film session: Chris's brother Aaron.

Aaron Gandy: "When I saw the tape, I couldn't tell who it was. Then when Coach read the name out loud, my heart began to race. I instantly knew I wanted him on the team."
Coach Willingham: "Chris should thank his brother. Seriously. If it weren't for Aaron vouching for him, I probably would've forgotten about that tape."

And the story tells itself from there. Willingham would recruit Chris Gandy to Tulane, being the only FBS school to offer him a scholarship, and a chance at a great education.

        WR Chris Gandy

Since then, life has gone well for the Gandy brothers. Chris redshirted his freshman season while Aaron started 13 games. Now Chris is the 4th receiver on the depth chart, after Aaron, Justin Fountain, and RS Freshman Jason Eaton. Chris has been key on some 3rd-down situations throughout this 2017 season, and will likely compete for a starting role in the offense this off-season after Aaron graduates. Aaron Gandy is set to graduate this spring with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, and a 3.4 GPA. He has his sights set on the NFL, but says he wouldn't mind running a business one day.

Aaron: "I wouldn't mind running a Fortune 500 company one day. Being a CEO, you know?"

As for Chris? He's just trying to enjoy the moment.

Chris: "Not many people get to play their favorite sport with their best friend. Especially when their best friend is their brother. I'm just trying to enjoy it as much as I can."

Re: Tulane Football: "From Worst to First"

I've been trying to find better ways of posting updates to the page. From looking at other dynasty pages, mine seems far too wordy. Plus, updates take a LOOOONG time for me to do. I don't have access to photo editing software, so that's out of the picture for now. I think I'm just gonna add a scoring summary to the Box Score, then simply summarize each game. That way there's less text, I can post updates quicker, and thus do them more often. I'm probably gonna finish this season using the current format, then start anew next season.

In the meantime, expect a Homecoming Game update this evening.

            9-0!

Wave overcome abysmal 1st Half to take Homecoming

The Green Wave football team have won their ninth-consecutive game, this time overcoming a horrible 1st half of play with a dynamic 2nd-half offense, en route to a 38-28 victory.

It wasn't easy at first. SMU got off to a horrendous start with QB Cedric Howard throwing a pick on the first play of the game. But CB Charlie Smith would have the ball stripped from him after receiving the pick, and SMU would receive it & go 85 yards down the field for the game's first score. Tulane would answer with a field goal, and it would stay 7-3 for much of the first half. SMU would move the ball but not score; Tulane would fail to move the ball, going 3-and-out four times. But then a miracle: with 0:04 left in the first half, QB Bryan Higgins would heave a prayer down the field, and WR Chris Gandy would catch it & take it 67 yards to paydirt, as time expired. SMU fails to pitch a touchdown shutout, and it's 14-10 at the break.

The second half would go a lot better for the Green Wave, with Bryan Higgins scoring 4 TD's (2 pass, 2 rush), and the Wave playing an aggressive defense. Though they did give up another 300-yard passing game in the affair, the Wave got after Cedric Howard (sacking him twice & forcing another INT). Tulane would outscore the Mustangs 28-14 the rest of the way, and extend their winning streak to 9 games. They'll have a tough one next week as they hit the road to Cincinnati. The Bearcats have much interest in stopping Tulane's dream season at a halt, and jeopardizing their chances of receiving an at-large BCS bid. But for the Wave? If they win this game @ Nippert Stadium, they can officially call themselves American Athletic Conference champions.

            Tune in next week!

A very important game taking place in the Queen City this week. The Green Wave win & they take home the American Athletic Conference crown. Though they'll have 1 more conference game left after this one (home vs. ECU), they will have enough wins in-conference to beat all possible tie-breakers & win the conference outright. The Bearcats are steaming coming into this one though; their recent history w/ Tulane hasn't been a good one. Dating back to the 2014 season (when Tulane joined the conference), Tulane has a 2-1 series lead on the Bearcats, those two victories being when UC was ranked in the AP Top 25. Especially after last season's unexpected shellacking handed down by the Wave in New Orleans, the Green Wave better not sleep on a hungry Bearcats team in this one. Because now THEY have the target on THEIR back.

I tried a "streamlined" version of reports for this latest wave of updates (#335-339). Less text, less "unnecessary stuff", smaller pictures (to save space), tried to keep it more "to the point." It's just one step, more changes likely coming in then future.

I need feedback. Tell me, what do you guys think?

I took a few minutes and compared. I like it. It's compact, it still gives a good outline of what is going on in your dynasty and gives me a window into how your game went against SMU without lots of scrolling. Pictures are always good, I'm looking at ways to get more for mine.

It's been a remarkable season, looking forward to this Cincinnati game. Went to UC for two semesters before it became too expensive and I had to move home. Fantastic program and campus. Higgins might be too good though.

Overall, this has been one of my favorite dynasties here for awhile. You've battled through ups and downs, found your star recruit and he's taken the country by storm. Somehow I know there will be rough patches ahead, despite how strong your team feels now and that is what has me excited.

I didn't mind doing the writing, honestly. (I actually thought the writing was pretty good.) It was just way too time-consuming for me. I'm trying to adopt the "Keep It Simple, Stupid" method.

I forgot you were in Ohio. I actually live in Cincinnati, haha. Went to OSU for a year, and had a rough go of it. Came back home to get my stuff straight, and I went to UC. It's not a bad campus, I just don't want to be at home for college, lol. Plus OSU's program for my major is a lot better, and a lot of my friends go there. So I'll probably go back there eventually. Where did you end up transferring?

Thanks man. I try to keep it real. I did a UTSA dynasty before this one w/ a friend at OSU, but after a few months we quit because it got too easy (went to the Fiesta Bowl in Year 2, won the NC in Year 4). But yeah, this one feel a lot more legitimate. I thought last season w/ Devin Powell & Crew would be a breakout season, and we struggled to 4 wins. I thought this year under Bryan Higgins would be a set-back year, and we're 9-0. So yeah, I like the unpredictability. And remember, Higgins was only a 3-star recruit, and spent last season at WR. Looking forward to the future, hoping it's just like this.

                            American Athletic Conference Champs

Tulane captures first 10-win season in 19 years

In yet another shootout with the Bearcats of Cincinnati, Tulane won its first conference title since winning the Conference USA title in 1998. In doing so, the Wave also captured its first 10-win season since '98 as well. Having already wrapped up the league before Halloween, the team can now focus on building its resume in hopes of impressing the BCS Selection Committee.

Once again, things didn't start easy for the Green Wave. Cincy got out to an early 10-0 lead before Tulane could even get comfortable. But once Higgins & Crew got things going they took off. Scoring 2 touchdowns in the Second Quarter, Tulane would take a 14-13 lead into the break. They had to depend on the passing game in this one more, as the running lanes weren't there in the early going. Even when they passed it still wasn't easy, as Bryan Higgins only completed 57% of his passes in the game. He was also sacked 4 times. For UC, the running game was a struggle for them too, as they only mustered 97 yards on the ground in this one. But QB C.J. Haynes was able to find his receivers in space for big gains. Still though, he forced a lot of passes. Throwing 3 interceptions, that would be the key in this football game.

Despite committing 4 turnovers on the day, Cincinnati hung around with the Green Wave. But when they had to put them away they couldn't, and the Wave walked out of Nippert Stadium with the win. A back-and-forth game the whole way, 42-35 the final. The Wave are now 10-0 on the season, and have 2 Bye weeks coming up after this one. They'll take the rest very graciously, but know they have to stay on their toes for Boston College on November 18. Just 2 games left, folks. And if the Wave really want to crash the BCS Bowl Party this year, they'll have to play solid football down the stretch.

Again, Clemson & Nebraska trade spots amid the top 2 of the poll. If these two teams keep their winning ways, we could be looking at a rematch of last year's National Championship (which Clemson won easily). Army & Miami (OH) soar up the polls after continuing their winning streaks. Also, Hawai'i & Notre Dame re-enter the polls @ 24 & 25, and Syracuse makes their debut appearance in this year's BCS Poll @ #23.
