Thanks man. We were rolling, but oh well. The season's still looking up, as we rebounded with a good game against SMU. That made the 5 recruits that visited very happy.

Still got some tough ones, as we play Cincy, ECU, and now the #2 Auburn Tigers (on the road, of course). Thank God we have lowly New Mexico State scheduled before that one

Oh, and Merry Christmas to you too! And to all my silent followers!

Mustangs Help Wave Get Back on Track

After last week’s misfortune in Hartford, the Green Wave spent the week regaining their edge. They knew they’d need their composure with QB Connor Preston leading a strong SMU attack. As expected, it was a close match. But this time one they were able to handle.

The offense was able muster up yards in this one. Just not points, en route to a 19-17 victory. Once again it seems like the defense shows up only when the offense can’t. The Wave held SMU to a season-low 168 yards total, while amassing 414 themselves. Devin Powell was able to find work in the air, but the read option once again seemed to be well-defended, evidenced by his 27 yards on the ground. The RBs stepped up again, with Rob Kelley having another 100-yd game. The defense did its work, as SMU QB Connor Preston (the American’s second-best passer coming into the game) was held completely in check. The short dump-offs seemed to work for him, but that’s about it.

WR Aaron Gandy hauling in his 5th touchdown of the season.

WR Terry Grigsby finally getting some serious action this season. Coach Willingham announced his plans to have Terry more involved in the offense, both as a pass catcher & a runner.

Devin Powell enjoying one of the few option plays that actually worked during the game.

Rob Kelley ran hard in his second game back, on his way to a 2nd straight 100-yard game.

The Green Wave improve their mark to 5-3 on the season, 5-2 in conference play. Up next they return to the ‘Nati to take on the Bearcats. The Wave upset the then-6th-ranked ‘Cats at Nippert Stadium last year 44-41, to spoil Cincy’s hopes of a BCS bid. This time they’ll face an unranked, but still strong Cincy squad. After that they have a Bye week, before facing two out-of-conference opponents in New Mexico State and the Auburn Tigers, who have soared to the #2 ranking in the BCS polls.

Nice W in a tight game. Funny you had 400+ yd's offense but was only able to muster up 19 pts and win by 2. You'd think seeing that you would've scored at least the 30 mark.

Merry Christmas to you and your family KSW.

Nice job with a bounce back win against SMU. I was surprised that game wasn't higher scoring.

                  Thanks man.

SMU fired June Jones 2 seasons ago after losing the Fiesta Bowl (idk why...), and hired a pro-style coach. I guess they're still adjusting. As for my team, it's either shootouts or defensive struggles.

                    2015 Midseason Report

With 9 weeks and 8 games in the books, let’s take a look at how the program has progressed thus far in 2015.

The Tulane Green Wave seem to be in a rather good position. After 9 weeks of play they currently sit atop the American Athletic Conference standings at 5-3, 5-2 in conference play. Looking at the rest of the conference shows it will be highly competitive, right to the finish.

                    A look at the standings:

Offensively things have been interesting. There have been games where the running game is electric (UCF, USF, Temple), and there have been games where the passing game was needed to bail out a stagnant run attack (LSU, Houston). Thankfully the Wave have noted when to use what, which helps the offense become less one-dimensional. QB Devin Powell has played very well in his fourth year, third year in the offense. His play has picked up where others may have left off, which shows in his accounting for 44% of the offensive yards & 59% of the offensive TDs thus far. Though Coach Willingham would like to see the work more evenly distributed, he’s glad to see Devin pick up the slack.

”We’ve been very impressed with Devin this season.” He’s really stepped up his game from last year, and proven he’s the leader of this offense.” says Coach Willingham.

“I’ve just done what coaches ask me to do.” says Powell. “Make plays when needed. I love running this offense.”

A look at Powell’s, and other key offensive stats, thus far:

                    Passing:
QB Devin Powell: 54/73, 871 yds, 11 TD, 3 INT

                    Rushing:
QB Devin Powell: 119 rush, 554 yds, 7 TD
HB Rob Kelley: 84 rush, 339 yds
FB Fred Roach: 61 rush, 331 yds, 2 TD
                    HB/WR Devon Breaux: 67 rush, 295 yds

                    Receiving:
WR Justin Atkinson: 13 rec, 242 yds, 4 TD
WR Aaron Gandy: 12 rec, 316 yds, 5 TD
WR Justin Fountain: 7 rec, 150 yds, 2 TD

                    Offensive Line:
RG Corey Redwine: 34 pancakes, 2 sacks allowed
LT/LG Arturo Uzdavinis: 31 pancakes, 4 sacks allowed
C Anthony Larkin: 21 pancakes, 3 sacks allowed

The defense started off sluggish as expected, but has greatly improved over the last 7 weeks. The early matchups with LSU and Central Florida tested our defense, with over 400 passing yards given up in each of those contests. But a good talking into the D during the Week 3 Bye proved very effective, as they have only given up two 300+ yard games since.

”I had to have a real talking into with my defense. Got right in their face. Had to talk to them and the D Coordinator. Hopefully it worked, haha.” says Willingham.

Thankfully they have the #1 run defense to their advantage.

A look at some defensive stats this season:

FS Jordan Batiste: 47 tackles, 22 solo tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 INT
CB Shaun Powers: 45 tackles, 25 solo, 8 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles
SS Terrence Thomas (Fr.): 40 tackles, 19 solo, 4 TFL, 2 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble
CB Darion Monroe: 40 tackles, 23 solo, 7 TFL, 1 INT, 6 pass deflections
MLB Jamie Baker: 36 tackles, 18 solo, 8 TFL, 3.0 sacks
CB Charlie Smith (Fr.): 14 tackles, 2 INT (1 “pick six”), 2 pass deflections, 4 fumble recoveries
CB Drew Watson: 21 tackles, 11 solo, 2 INT
DE Jeremy Weber: 20 tackles, 13 solo, 8 TFL, 6.0 sacks, 1 safety

Jeremy Weber we’ll discuss later. He’s become a monster this year.

The special teams has played better than expected. With a freshman kicker and punter, and returnmen being asked to field kicks & punts for the first time, expectations were all over the place. Luckily the youngsters have come through, with K/P Taylor Gaston hitting on 9 for 11 field goals this season. He has also been a reliable punter this season, averaging 35 yards per punt. CB Charlie Smith has become the return specialist for the team, having already fielded a 100 yard kick return for a TD this season, the longest in school history. He has averaged 31 yards per kick return this season, which has helped the Tulane offense out a lot.

Not too long before the Heisman Trophy will be presented. Although the Green Wave have no player currently in the running ( ), the current candidates are QUITE surprising.

                        A Look at Recruiting...

Alright guys, recruiting’s gone well this year, but I’m not finished. Here are the guys I’m looking at thus far. Tell me what you think.

PS: Yes, I am recruiting a RB named Eric Foreman. If only he were from Wisconsin…

KSW nice recruiting board. By chance just wondering. I forget what kind of play books you run with Tulane. I believe you said 4-3 on the defense. Of course the option. But, what school playbook?

With recruiting, what kind of guys do you recruit for the positions ( i.e. - OL run or pass, DL pass rusher or run blocker)?

On defense I run the default "Multiple D" playbook. Though that may change as I can't stop the pass to save my life. On offense I run a created playbook I call "Killer Option," which I update from time to time.

                            How I recruit:
                            QB: scrambler
                            HB: speed
                            FB: receiving
                            WR: speed
                            TE: blocking
                            OL: run block
                            DL: pass rush
                            LB: balanced
                            CB/FS/SS: hard hitter
                            K/P: power

On offense I like my skill positions to have great speed, and my big guys to have great power. Though FB's have BOTH in my offense - they're wildcard players. I like my defense to be aggressive. Also, no excuse for bad special teams.

I tend to stay away from Juco guys unless I really have a need and need to fill a starting spot that next year or in some cases if they have a redshirt, I will do that and have a 2 year starter when they come off because they are typically rated higher then your Avg 2 or 3* guy

Just curious because you have Harper who is a Juco JR who is a 2*, and I couldn't remember what your QB situation was next season.

Next year Devin Powell returns for his fifth & final season, and he'll probably be a 95+ ovr QB. After that, who knows...

Anyway, I recruited Harper more as an athlete than a QB. Didn't wanna cheese recruiting ATH's. Don't know what I'll do with him yet.
