        Game Notes
Both teams are 0-2, both teams are currently at the bottom of the AAC, both teams are looking for wins to get their season started. The Green Wave come into the game with a high-powered offense, averaging over 200 yards a game running and throwing the ball. On the flip side Memphis is struggling this season to find an offensive identity. Both teams have struggled on the defensive side in the early going.

Memphis QB Will Gross had success running the ball on the Green Wave when these two teams played last season, having over 150 yards on the ground. He'll look to have similar success this time around against mostly the same defense. The Wave secondary will look to greatly improve on their coverage skills after giving up 300+ yards in the air the first two weeks.

When it comes down to it, there's clearly a talent gap. Tulane has improved on both sides of the ball, while Memphis has lost much of its talent from last season. Given last week's effort expect the Wave defensive line to get pressure on Gross, as the Tigers offensive line is weak to say the least. They also lack a top-flight receiver for a spread offense, as well as a competent defender in the front seven, which is needed to stop a run-heavy attack. Other than an experienced QB & RB, two decent safeties and a GREAT kicker, look for the talent gap to be exposed early. Don't expect this game to be close for long.

        PREDICTION: Tulane 35, Memphis 17

Re: Tulane Football: "From Worst to First"

          Tigers Bow Down to Wave

The Green Wave went into this week’s game with Memphis thinking they’d have it in the bag early; they instead found themselves in a dogfight that tested their tenacity and resilience. Though they would walk off the field 24-14 winners they knew they didn’t leave their best effort on the field.

The Green Wave would actually play a good game, gaining 299 yards on the ground as they’ve come to expect these days. The defense would play especially well, holding the Memphis offense to under 200 yards for the game. Tiger QB Will Gross would be held in check, both passing and rushing. Wave QB Devin Powell would keep his ground game moving, with his 120 yards and 2 TDs. RB Rob Kelley, FB Fred Roach, even backup QB Trevor Knight would all contribute in the running game as well. Problem: couldn’t capitalize on opportunities when given to them. They’ll look to improve on that going forward.

Devin Powell takes an option play for a huge gain.

Powell punches it in for the touchdown.

Bryan Higgins leaps over the goaline for his 1st career touchdown.

MLB Jamie Baker sacks Memphis QB Will Gross. Gross was harassed on plenty of occasions during the game.

The Green Wave end their 3-game home stretch next week vs. Houston, then take their talents on the road for 3 games, starting with South Florida.

Re: Tulane Football: "From Worst to First"

Feisty Cats Prove No Match for Rumbling Wave

The Houston Cougars have changed quite a bit since last year’s meeting. New head coach, new quarterback, new offensive style. They’re still trying to get into the groove of things, and the Green Wave capitalized on a free opportunity.

Though they gave up a big-play touchdown on the first play of the game, Tulane would play lockdown the rest of the way, en route to a 24-10 victory. The running game has been inconsistent this season to say the least, but the passing game has picked up, as was evident in today’s game. Although Devin Powell produced the usual on the ground (75 yards on 16 carries), he also connected on 9 of 10 passes for 168 yards, including touchdowns to WR Justin Fountain and TE Marshall Brown. Brown’s TD gave him his first for his career. FB Fred Roach also made his presence known, with 43 yards & a TD, on 11 carries.

Devin Powell throws a bullet to the endzone.

TE Marshall Brown grabs his first career touchdown.

Jeremy Weber sacks QB Bohl Kohlhausen for his third sack of the season.

Jamie Baker gets his turn to sack Kohlhausen.

The defense put up another stout performance, holding Houston to just 231 yards of offense. Though the Cougar running game gave them fits at times, the secondary held its own for once, keeping Houston QB Bohl Kohlhausen to under 150 yards passing. They and the offense look to continue their good play next week, when the Green Wave take their talents to South Florida to take on the Bulls.

Re: Tulane Football: "From Worst to First"

              Vengeance Shall Be the Wave’s

This year’s match with the South Florida Bulls took place at the same location as last year’s. Last year the Tulane Green Wave were riding a 4-game winning streak before marching into Raymond James Stadium and falling at the hands of the then-winless Bulls. Though the season would continue into bowl season, the loss would prevent Tulane from being in firm position for a conference title. It would end up being Tulane’s sole loss in American Athletic Conference play last season.

Aaron Gandy runs for a touchdown, his third of the season.

This time around the Green Wave would have luck on their side, en route to a 42-35 road victory. For long this game seemed to be well in hand, until the Tulane secondary suffered many a breakdown in the 4th quarter. Giving up 21 unanswered points to Matt Floyd & the Bulls, a 42-14 blowout quickly became a seven point game. Early, USF’s only scores came on busted coverages in the Tulane secondary; other than that it took three quarters for Floyd’s offense to get going. Jeremy Weber added to his sack total, bringing it to 5. He also helped Tulane score a safety early in the second.

The Wave would have to get the offense going without leader Devin Powell, as he would be lost early in the game with what doctors are calling a mild concussion. Thankfully Trevor Knight saved the day. His ability to direct the offense turned coaches’ heads, including head man Kaelyn Willingham. “I was very impressed with [Knight’s] performance today. We’ll try to get him more reps in the future.” said Willingham after the game. RB/WR Shawn Henry also stepped up big, raking in 3 touchdowns on his way to being named “Player of the Game.” RB Devon Breaux was able to pull in a season high 83 yards on 16 carries as he pulls the weight for Rob Kelley, who is still nursing an abdominal strain.

              [CENTER]
Trevor Knight attempts a pass downfield.

QB/RB/WR Bryan Higgins throws his first touchdown pass to RB Wendell Goolsby.

Jeremy Weber claims his 4th sack of the year, this time at the hands of USF QB Matt Floyd.

Weber gets his 5th sack of the year, this time for a safety.

Shawn Henry leaps over the pile-on for what would be his second of 3 touchdowns on the evening.

Henry reaches over the goal line for his third TD.

Even K/P Taylor Gaston gets in on the offensive fun, successfully attempting a fake punt run for a 1st down.

The Green Wave take their talents to Philadelphia next week to face the Owls of Temple, before finishing up their road trip the following week at UConn.

Nice winning streak KSW. Like the redemption you got on USF and the performance your define stepped up with Houston. Really enjoying reading the dynasty. It's looking good.

Re: Tulane Football: "From Worst to First"

                      Win Streak Extended to 4

Tulane headed into Lincoln Financial Field an optimist, and they left a winner. They knew the Temple Owls would give them a fight, as they boast a top-10 running game and a tough defense. They also knew that a freshman QB would have to beat them if the Owls wanted to get on top. With that in mind, the 24-17 victory felt very appropriate.

Aaron Gandy catches a TD pass. From BRYAN HIGGINS, not Devin Powell.

The defense did its job in this one, shutting down Temple RB Kenneth Harper for just 51 yards on 20 carries. The passing game was not available to the Wave in this one, but the run game bailed them out. Not much more to be said about this one. It was a tough fight between two evenly matched teams, but a win is a win. Next up: @ UConn.

Freshman DT Willie Ross gets his 3rd sack of the year.

Devin Powell runs for a big gain. Surprisingly, he would not score on the day.

RB Wendell Goolsby leaps over the goal for his TD of the game.

                        Tulane-UConn: One for the Ages

The Tulane-UConn game of 2015 will go down as one of the great finishes you’ll ever see. A back-and-forth shootout in a rainy quagmire. I can’t believe it. The game will go down as a famed ESPN Classic. A MAJOR finish to an amazing game.

                        WHAT HAPPENED!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

The game started slow at first, Tulane jumping out to a 7-3 lead after one. Tulane for the most part was dominant in the first half, on the ground and on defense. Once again the passing game was not to be for the Green Wave, so they had to rely on the ground attack. This time, even the running game was limited. All that worked: powering up the middle. So 2nd half that’s all they did: HB dive out of the Pistol. Mixed in the RBs: Kelley (who returned from injury), Breaux and Goolsby. Even the FB Fred Roach got involved. Devin Powell was unable to do much as the pass game wasn’t there and the read option wasn’t working as well.
But this week the defense showed up. UConn QB Casey Cochran had a tough go at the start, throwing two early interceptions. The Huskie offense wasn’t able to churn up much on the offensive front. But things would change in the second half. Out of nowhere the Huskies decided “Let’s throw deep on them!” And that’s all they did. Despite FOUR interceptions on the day, Casey Cochran was able to deep-ball UConn back into the game.

                        SO WHY ALL THE HUB-BUB???

The game would get interesting in the Fourth. UConn air-raided their way into a ball game. Not trusting his defense, Tulane Coach Kaelyn Willingham would employ a controversial technique hoping to regain momentum: He attempted a fake punt on fourth down on his side of the 50. AND IT WORKED!!! Until Tulane P Taylor Gaston fumbled the ball after gaining the first down. He took a big hit from a UConn defender, and all is history from there. UConn gets the ball back, they take the lead. The score: 31-28. Tulane would tack on a field goal to even it at 31. Then they’d strike again. The UConn receivers had a field day in the second half against the Tulane secondary. Another down-field strike, another touchdown. 38-31. This time with 35 seconds to go. Tulane’s worst nightmare had happened. Now they needed to respond.

18 seconds to go, Devin Powell would throw a deep strike down the field, CAUGHT by Justin Atkinson. They only needed two plays, game nodded up at 38 They considered the two-point conversion to take the lead, but decided against it. They kick off, ball recoverered at the 30. Seven seconds to play. Play prevent defense. Game over, right?
WRONG!!! Casey Cochran heaved one down the field, CAUGHT by Henry Holycross, gone for a 71 yard touchdown. NO TIME ON THE CLOCK, UCONN WINS!!!!!! 45-38, that’s how it ends. A STUNNER. The Tulane Green Wave were shocked…

“I don’t believe it. I just don’t believe it.” said Coach Willingham after the game.
“We were in shock. We were all in shock. We thought we had it in the bag.” said Devin Powell

The Green Wave will have to regroup. They have SMU coming to town next week. Getting over losses isn’t easy, but this one will be especially tough. STREAK ENDS AT 4.

Sorry for the "L" in the UConn game. But, that seemed like it was a pretty intense game for you.

You can call it being a "Homer". But as Tupac said, its California Love.

That game became my new #1 ESPN Instant Classic, shattering an old UTSA dynasty game points-wise.
And we were handling them at halftime too. Yet another defensive letdown...

Tough way to lose. Looked like you had the "Mo" going into the game and even at the half. Still probably a fun game to play though. Just would've been nice to have a different outcome.

Keep up the great work, and have a Merry Christmas.
