Jets Gameday Preview: Week 14

Obviously, we're sold out today at MetLife, and if the atmosphere is anything less than a full playoff atmosphere, these fans shouldn't ever be allowed to come back to the stadium again.
It's a stretch, but I think it's okay to say it. These are the two best teams in the NFL. The Seahawks might want a say in that, but until they play and beat one of us, the Chiefs and the Jets own the title. When we look at the stats, the lowest anybody ranks is the Jets, at #10 in passing offense, even though QB Marcus Mariota is now #3 in the NFL in passing, after his almost near historic game last week, throwing for 548 yards against the Patriots. Both teams are among the best in the league in offense and defense. In fact, they are tied for #1 in the league in total defense, while the Chiefs also lead the league in total offense, just over 100 yards ahead of the #2 team in that category, the Jets. The Chiefs, however, have been, by far, the most dominant team in the league. The Jets, have been squeezing out close wins, in large part because of their tendency to turn the ball over. Their turnover margin of -25 is worst in the league, yet they sit at 9-3 and hold the #2 seed in the AFC as we sit in mid-December.
The Chiefs are 11-1, truly amazing. But what's even more incredible is the fact that their star quarterback Alex Smith has been out since October with a torn bicep. Who's been carrying the load, and still putting up the numbers that make this the best offense in the league? Rookie DeShone Kizer, that's who. He's a dual threat with an incredible arm, very similar to Cam Newton, and this offense is so lethal because there's a second option in the running game, the perennial All-Pro Jamaal Charles. You could argue that only the Jets' Todd Gurley has been better over the course of the last two seasons, but since Gurley is hurt, today will be Charles' stage, as long as he can find room on the Jets' 2nd ranked rush defense. Can you guess who has the #1 rush defense?
Anyhow, when Kizer airs it out, he has a clear favorite target in Jeremy Maclin, who's been hauling in receiving yards. Until last week, he had been #2 in the league in that category all season. But last week, the team of Kizer and Travis Kelce put on a show against the Buffalo Bills, and really served as Kelce's 2017 coming out party, after being slowed down by multiple injuries in the early part of the season. Kizer also has the incredibly quick De'Anthony Thomas to throw to, and the incredibly reliable hands of Kamar Aiken, the former Raven who came over in free agency. No wonder these guys are the best.
Before this breakout year by the Kansas City offense, they've been known for their defense for a long time. The reason for that? On each level of the defense, they have one of the best players in the league, as well as one of the most humble. Up front, Justin Houston is a sack machine, leading the league last year, and still putting up a pretty solid campaign in 2017, finding himself in the top 5. Linebacker Derrick Johnson is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, but still causes nightmares for both running backs and quarterbacks. And in that underrated secondary, there's Eric Berry. You gotta love Berry and his story, fighting cancer, beating it, and then having a career year in his first season back. He's as good as he's ever been, and will certainly try to take advantage of the Jets' love affair with interceptions. But, in the meantime, let's go back to the D-line. Joining Houston is the seasoned vet Tamba Hali, a worthy pass rusher in his own right, who will look to have his way with the Jets rookie right tackle Will Holden. Rounding out the unit are the DTs, Dontari Poe and the former Bayou Bengal, rookie Davon Godchaux. Among the linebackers, Johnson is the captain, both of the position and the entire defensive unit. He is joined by former Saint Junior Galette and rookie Zach Cunningham, who was a tackling machine last year at Vanderbilt. Finally, in the secondary, young corner Marcus Peters has so much talent, but still has so much potential. He reminds the Jets a lot of Darrelle Revis. Peters will likely cover Vincent Jackson, leaving Phillip Gaines on Mike Williams. Alongside Berry at the safety position is Ron Parker, a very good player in his own right. Since the Chiefs have the #1 total defense, and the #1 rush defense, the Jets don't expect to get very much on the ground with Matt Forte, which is okay, because they've relied on Mariota's arm the last two weeks, and he sure put out six days ago in Foxboro. Oh, and did we mention that Gronk is back? That's a big bonus.
