    Jets Gameday Preview: Week 14

Obviously, we're sold out today at MetLife, and if the atmosphere is anything less than a full playoff atmosphere, these fans shouldn't ever be allowed to come back to the stadium again.

It's a stretch, but I think it's okay to say it. These are the two best teams in the NFL. The Seahawks might want a say in that, but until they play and beat one of us, the Chiefs and the Jets own the title. When we look at the stats, the lowest anybody ranks is the Jets, at #10 in passing offense, even though QB Marcus Mariota is now #3 in the NFL in passing, after his almost near historic game last week, throwing for 548 yards against the Patriots. Both teams are among the best in the league in offense and defense. In fact, they are tied for #1 in the league in total defense, while the Chiefs also lead the league in total offense, just over 100 yards ahead of the #2 team in that category, the Jets. The Chiefs, however, have been, by far, the most dominant team in the league. The Jets, have been squeezing out close wins, in large part because of their tendency to turn the ball over. Their turnover margin of -25 is worst in the league, yet they sit at 9-3 and hold the #2 seed in the AFC as we sit in mid-December.

The Chiefs are 11-1, truly amazing. But what's even more incredible is the fact that their star quarterback Alex Smith has been out since October with a torn bicep. Who's been carrying the load, and still putting up the numbers that make this the best offense in the league? Rookie DeShone Kizer, that's who. He's a dual threat with an incredible arm, very similar to Cam Newton, and this offense is so lethal because there's a second option in the running game, the perennial All-Pro Jamaal Charles. You could argue that only the Jets' Todd Gurley has been better over the course of the last two seasons, but since Gurley is hurt, today will be Charles' stage, as long as he can find room on the Jets' 2nd ranked rush defense. Can you guess who has the #1 rush defense?

Anyhow, when Kizer airs it out, he has a clear favorite target in Jeremy Maclin, who's been hauling in receiving yards. Until last week, he had been #2 in the league in that category all season. But last week, the team of Kizer and Travis Kelce put on a show against the Buffalo Bills, and really served as Kelce's 2017 coming out party, after being slowed down by multiple injuries in the early part of the season. Kizer also has the incredibly quick De'Anthony Thomas to throw to, and the incredibly reliable hands of Kamar Aiken, the former Raven who came over in free agency. No wonder these guys are the best.

Before this breakout year by the Kansas City offense, they've been known for their defense for a long time. The reason for that? On each level of the defense, they have one of the best players in the league, as well as one of the most humble. Up front, Justin Houston is a sack machine, leading the league last year, and still putting up a pretty solid campaign in 2017, finding himself in the top 5. Linebacker Derrick Johnson is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, but still causes nightmares for both running backs and quarterbacks. And in that underrated secondary, there's Eric Berry. You gotta love Berry and his story, fighting cancer, beating it, and then having a career year in his first season back. He's as good as he's ever been, and will certainly try to take advantage of the Jets' love affair with interceptions. But, in the meantime, let's go back to the D-line. Joining Houston is the seasoned vet Tamba Hali, a worthy pass rusher in his own right, who will look to have his way with the Jets rookie right tackle Will Holden. Rounding out the unit are the DTs, Dontari Poe and the former Bayou Bengal, rookie Davon Godchaux. Among the linebackers, Johnson is the captain, both of the position and the entire defensive unit. He is joined by former Saint Junior Galette and rookie Zach Cunningham, who was a tackling machine last year at Vanderbilt. Finally, in the secondary, young corner Marcus Peters has so much talent, but still has so much potential. He reminds the Jets a lot of Darrelle Revis. Peters will likely cover Vincent Jackson, leaving Phillip Gaines on Mike Williams. Alongside Berry at the safety position is Ron Parker, a very good player in his own right. Since the Chiefs have the #1 total defense, and the #1 rush defense, the Jets don't expect to get very much on the ground with Matt Forte, which is okay, because they've relied on Mariota's arm the last two weeks, and he sure put out six days ago in Foxboro. Oh, and did we mention that Gronk is back? That's a big bonus.

Gameday Recap: Chiefs 20, Jets 13
Jets squander golden opportunity to pull off a win

The Chiefs' pass rush waited 3 and a half quarters to come alive, but when they did, it killed the Jets. Here, Keivarae Russell attacks Mariota as he throws, causing the ball to squirt free, right into Justin Houston's paws. Since it was caught behind where it was released from, it counted as a fumble.

It wasn’t enough to have 5 sacks on the rookie DeShone Kizer. It wasn’t enough to outgain the league’s best offense, going against the league’s best defense. And why wasn’t it enough? Turnovers. When the Jets lose a game, it is almost always because they find the worst possible time to turn the ball over, and then do just that. First, it was Matt Forte at the 1 yard line, running into Dontari Poe and coughing it up. Then, in a tie game with 4 minutes to play, it was Mariota, who had been playing pretty well until then, trying to release it as Keivarae Russell approached, to no avail, instead giving it right over to Justin Houston, who took it straight to the house without a Jet within 10 yards of him. These aren’t just bad luck; they’re the biggest weakness in an otherwise solid football team. Nonetheless, we’re still 9-4, and hope to get a second chance at KC in the playoffs.

The game’s first play was a nine and a half yard run by Jamaal Charles, but the Jets wanted nothing to do with that, taking it out on DeShone Kizer. First, it was Rontez Miles. Then, it was Leonard Williams bringing him down, forcing the league’s #1 offense into a three and out, and getting the crowd absolutely jacked up. But, after a quick first down from the Jets offense, the Chiefs held their own, showing why they are the best team in football. Lachlan Edwards’ punt was a beauty, downed inside the 15, but that didn’t stop Kizer. After yelling at his linemen to block for him, he took over, connecting with Jeremy Maclin way down the field, after scrambling out to his right and throwing across his body. Two plays later, Kizer capped off a perfect drive throwing the ball by finding Maclin in the corner of the end zone to put the Chiefs on the board.

Jeremy Maclin was wide open in the corner of the end zone, but the fact that Kizer threw it behind him allowed Maclin the opportunity to show off some fancy footwork. He had about thee and a half feet in bounds before stepping out, but the booth still wanted a look at it.

The Jets put together a nice drive, using the run game to get first downs from 3 or 4 yards out, since that was just about all they could get. They moved the ball just onto the edge of field goal range, with a big tailwind for Nick Folk, but an amazing play by Marcus Peters brought the drive to a sudden halt. It wasn’t a bad throw by Mariota; Amaro was wide open when he released it. Peters just made an absolutely phenomenal read on the ball, ditching his man, in this case Mike Williams, and diving backward to undercut Amaro and steal the ball away. The play took away whatever momentum the Jets had, allowing the Chiefs to quickly get to the red zone, but a goal line stand by that strong Jets defense kept the score at 10-0 after Mike Nugent’s chip shot field goal. The Jets were in a great position to put points on the board before halftime, and started to find holes in the Chiefs’ zone coverage. They got the ball to the one, after Vincent Jackson fought to get in but just couldn’t. Mariota wanted to hand it off to Forte, to try to get him into the end zone for the first time in 2017. But, as soon as he gave the seasoned vet the ball, he ran into Dontari Poe, who, if you don’t know, is one HUGE man. Forte dropped the ball immediately, almost in fear, and Poe fell on it at the 1 yard line. Thankfully, the Jets defense was growing tired of seeing their offense turn the ball over, so they took matters into their own hands. On the very next play, Mo Wilkerson broke right through the KC offensive line, and brought down Jamaal Charles before he had a chance to breathe, resulting in a safety. It was 10-2 Chiefs, and a long field goal off the free kick made it 10-5 going into the locker room.

Matt Forte just gives up, upon meeting Dontari Poe's acquaintance. He dropped the ball quicker than Devin Smith usually does when Mariota tries to throw it to him.

Out of the break, each team got the ball, got a couple of first downs, then had to punt. This game lived up to its hype: Both teams were flexing their muscles and enforcing their will on defense. After Kizer led that great drive in the first, he looked pretty average the rest of the day. So, it was the Jets ball, their second possession of the half. Mariota found Amaro on the sideline for a big gain to move across midfield, but the refs called him out of bounds. Being an eyewitness to the play, Todd Bowles threw the challenge flag almost instantly. The replay showed Amaro getting a total of zero feet down in bounds, so the call on the field stood, but the refs didn’t charge the Jets with a timeout, implying that they had won the challenge somehow. Of course, that meant that they got another one, if they were to need it. And a few minutes later, on the same drive, they would need it. The Jets were going for it on 4th and 1 from the Kansas City 26 yard line, well in range for Nick Folk’s leg, but with the deficit at 5, the Jets wanted to take a risk. The play call was a huge risk, a handoff to the fullback Dakota Ball, going straight up the middle, straight into the teeth of the Chiefs’ fantastic run defense. Ball got a head of steam, but was brought back a half yard or so by a plethora of men in red helmets. As the refs pointed toward the Chiefs side of the field, indicating that they had taken over on downs, the Chiefs’ players ran off the field to greet their ecstatic rookie head coach Demetrius Turner, who has got to be the favorite for Coach of the Year. But, the Jets weren’t so sure, and out came the challenge flag from Todd Bowles’ back pocket. The ball, in Ball’s possession, had clearly crossed the line of the 25, the yard to gain, and after a long review, the call was overturned, and the Jets had a first down. They made quick use of this rejuvenation, and the play after Matt Forte dove head first, unsuccessfully, toward the goal line after a long run on a screen pass, Mariota rewarded his effort by finding him in the flat for the touchdown, and then again over the middle for the two point conversion, the second successful conversion for the Jets in as many weeks. With 30 seconds to go in the third quarter, the Jets had a 13-10 lead.

It was the Chiefs turn to go on a long drive, and after the team of Charles and Kizer methodically worked the Jets defense into exhaustion, Kansas City found themselves with a 1st and goal at the 4 yard line. A handoff to Charles was stuffed, and then Kizer was forced to throw a check down to De’Anthony Thomas at the 1 and a half yard line. So, on third down, needing a big play, the Jets brought pressure, and it was Wilkerson breaking through for the Jets’ 5th sack of the day, causing KC to settle for a game tying field goal. So, with just under 7 minutes left, it was go time for the Jets. Mariota started to rely on his tight ends. Back to back completions to Amaro and Gronkowski, the latter going for a big gain, put the Jets inside the 30 yard line. But, the Chiefs picked a perfect time for their first sack of the afternoon. Keivarae Russell came in unblocked, from Mariota’s non-blind side, and pushed his arm back right as the Jets QB was getting ready to throw. The ball came out, went flying up, and was grabbed out of the sky by Justin Houston. His ensuing touchdown run killed the morale of that playoff atmosphere crowd, and certainly put a damper on the Jets mood. But, they still had plenty of time.

Muhammad Wilkerson brings down DeShone Kizer on third and goal before the rookie could unleash it to the wide open James O'Shaughnessy (80), the back up tight end, who was waiting for it in the end zone. The Chiefs had to settle for a field goal that tied the game.

Justin Houston closes on the fumble by Mariota. This ended up being the game winning play, and it just sucks, because this is the kind of thing that can only happen in a video game.

After a quick completion, trying to settle down the troops, Mariota fell victim to more mayhem from the Chiefs. Back to back sacks, with another fumble, fallen on by Forte, pushed the Jets back to their own 35, and forced a punt right at the two minute warning. With all 3 timeouts, because of that screw up by the refs on that first challenge, the one the Jets clearly didn’t win, the Jets wasted almost no time getting the ball back after stuffing Jamaal Charles on three straight plays. But, in desperation mode, Mariota forced one into a little too tight of a window to Devin Smith, and the rookie Zach Cunningham secured the 10th straight win for the Chiefs, who also clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Jets, even with this loss, can still clinch the AFC East, if the Patriots lose to the Panthers in Carolina. Go Panthers!

Tough loss to the Chiefs, the turnovers finally did you in. At least someone other than the Patriots won the AFC East tho lol, congrats on that.

Next week, (hopefully) RoundingThird figures the Bills out. It'd be a very early Christmas miracle 😂

I'm so glad we've clinched. This time, the Bills can't knock us out, but we can knock them out. If we win, they won't be knocked out, but they'll be on the brink.

                Jets Gameday Preview: Week 15

Today is the last time we shall see our beautiful home in the regular season, but with a division title under our belts, we're guaranteed to host at least one playoff game. See y'all then!

Everybody knows that we can't beat the Bills. We're 0-7 against them since 2013, and 0-5 since Rex Ryan took over as coach after leaving the Jets. In fact, Rex's success against the Jets may be the only thing keeping him off the unemployment line. Last season was average, but this season as been a train wreck. Despite a win last week against a very good New Orleans team, the Bills have been hit with the injury bug on offense, and have struggled with it all season long. As a result, they have one of the league's worst offenses. But, the real killer has been the defense, the characteristic that all of Rex's teams have been known for. They've been like the Red Sea, allowing opposing runners to part them with the touch of a hand. What drew the Jets in the last time was their inability to run the ball, even though the Bills are one of the league's worst in stopping the run. But, since the Jets have been relying on the passing game during the absence of Todd Gurley, I don't think that will be too much of an issue. Instead, they'll have to deal with the same pass defense that gave them fits in Orchard Park six weeks ago. But, hey, we've clinched the AFC East! The Bills can't knock us out of the playoffs this time!!!! We're saved!

Josh Johnson is the only healthy quarterback on the Bills roster, which certainly explains their offensive woes. But, they dropped 45 points last week on one of the league's better defenses, and they did it by rushing for over 250 yards. The Jets know how quickly LeSean McCoy can strike. In week 2 last season, he gathered over 200 yards in the first half before getting hurt, and in the first meeting this season, he added another 150 yard and a couple of scores. And, this season, he's been joined by rookie Christian McCaffrey, who's just as dangerous, but in a much different way. This will be the Jets first look at McCaffrey, who was injured when they met in November, on the first leg of that brutal 3 week road trip. Even though the passing game has been stagnant for much of the season with the on and off injuries to the quarterback position, Johnson still has some good people to throw to. Sammy Watkins made the Jets look foolish the last time out, while recent additions Emmanuel Sanders and Jamison Crowder bring a sense of reliability to the offense, joining tight end Charles Clay as some of the most important veteran players on the roster.

The Bills defense has a good mixture of young studs and veteran machines. Up front are second year defensive end Shaq Lawson and rookie defensive tackle Caleb Brantley joining the vets Marcell Dareus and Jerry Hughes. The linebackers are all Brown, and no I'm not being racist. There's Zach Brown, Preston Brown, the tackling machine, and Arthur Brown. Killing all of the joy is Reggie Ragland, getting the start on the outside, adjacent to all these fellas with the same name that aren't related. Even the secondary maintains this balance of youth and experience. At corner, Stephon Gilmore and Ronald Darby have been leading the way, and the Bills' coaching staff has seen a great upside out of the rookie Ezra Robinson, straight outta Tennessee State. Just like we talked about last time, the safety positions are full of older gentlemen trying to fight each other off for a leading role. At free safety, longtime Bill Corey Graham is competing with J.J. Wilcox, in the final stages of his first season with the team, while at the strong safety position, Aaron Williams is battling with Robert Blanton, who at this point in 2015, was starting at safety for the Sam Freday coached Minnesota Vikings.

Aww man, you almost had them. Should be a win against Buffalo, but these division games are always tougher than they seem.

They certainly are. We lost to Miami in week 2, and they've been having an awful year as well. This game is important. We need to get over the hump against the Bills, and we still have a first round bye to play for, so we have to bring our A game. Thanks for checking in!

Gameday Recap: Jets 43, Bills 40
Jets defense completely falls apart, offense saves the day to end the streak against Buffalo

After being frustrated to so many new levels, the Jets settled down and let the quarterback do all the work. Marcus Mariota takes it in from 3 yards out to give the Jets their first lead of the day, halfway through the 4th quarter.

This was, in all senses of the term, a trap game. There’s no denying that the Jets’ defense was on a high after last week’s performance, shutting down the league’s best offense. With a mediocre team down to their 3rd string QB stepping onto the field, they got a little cocky, and with the Saints, and their fantastic offense, looming next week on Christmas Eve. Put it all together, and that’s the recipe for allowing 350 first half yards to the league’s sixth worst offense. That’s no lie. 350 yards, with around 250 coming from Josh Johnson. As Todd Bowles walked into the locker room down 27-14, before he lost his voice screaming at his defense, all he could think to himself was why in the hell can’t we beat the Bills?

The first drive of the game was all the Jets needed to feel like they were cursed when it came to playing the Bills. Shady broke a couple tackles and snuck outside for a huge gain, and then Johnson got it off on second and short to Emmanuel Sanders, and he did the rest: juking past Darqueze Dennard, spinning off Darron Lee, making David Harris dive and then just flat out miss, eventually going 70 yards to the end zone on the 4th play of the game. The Jets offense came out just as hot, only needing five plays of their own before Mariota threw a home run ball to Vincent Jackson in the back of the end zone to make it 7-7. But, the Jets’ defense was just starting to fall apart. McCoy had another huge gain to get the Bills into field goal range, but the Jets got a stop. Ryan Succop came out for a 55 yard field goal, and Dee Milliner came oh so close to blocking it. The kick was good, but hold on. Flag on the play! Apparently, Milliner knocked Succop over as he came down. On 4th and 9, it wouldn’t have been a big deal if it was only running into the kicker, but it wasn’t; it was roughing the kicker. The Bills got a first down, and Leonard Williams jumping offside moved them into the red zone. Johnson found Sanders over the middle, breaking free and getting to the 4 yard line before Rontez Miles turned into a human missile, saving the Jets from another embarrassing score. Miles knocked the ball out, and Darron Lee picked it up at the 5 yard line. But, the Jets could do nothing, and had to punt from their own 10, with the wind at their back. Lachlan Edwards launched a beautiful 90 yard punt that just tumbled into the end zone before Rontez Miles could down it. On the very next play, with the New York pass rush nonexistent, Johnson decided to take a shot deep. It was Sammy Watkins in one-on-one coverage with Marcus Gilchrist, but Gilchrist literally froze, and all Watkins had to do was catch the ball and he was gone. 80 yards later, the Bills were up 14-7, and Bowles was losing his mind, with 3 minutes left in the FIRST QUARTER.

Vincent Jackson boxes out Corey Graham to get himself into position to catch the home run ball from Mariota, tying the score at 7.

Marcus Gilchrist picks a good time to take a nap, allowing Sammy Watkins to make the easiest 80 yard touchdown play of his life.

And if that wasn’t enough, Mariota decided it was time to start turning the ball over. He had three picks and a fumble, but they weren’t necessarily his fault. On the first one, at the tail end of the first quarter, he was just trying to lead Gronkowski, but Aaron Williams beat him to the spot and nabbed it. On the Jets side of the field, the Bills had no problem getting a field goal, but even that took a goal line stand by the Jets. That was the first time they were able to get the Bills off the field on third down. Succop nailed a chip shot to make it 17-7. Mariota came back out on the field angry, finding Gronkowski on a similar play as the interception, and Gronk got free, running 70 yards untouched before Ronald Darby saved a touchdown inside the 5. Two plays later, Mariota threw a quick slant out to Jackson for the second touchdown of the game for both men. 17-14. But, again, the Jets defense wasn’t done blowing up. The Bills embarked on a five minute drive highlighted by Josh Johnson scrambling out of the pocket left, throwing across his body to Jamison Crowder for a huge gain on third down. After that, McCoy did the rest of the work getting them into the red zone, then called on the rookie McCaffrey to punch it in, and he did, from 12 yards out, breaking two more tackles. His only carry of the day was a good one, and Bowles was ready to blow a gasket.

Rontez Miles saves the Jets from more pain, and their coach from a heart attack, by flat-lining Emmanuel Sanders. The ball, as you can see, came out instantly.

Christian McCaffrey made the most of his only opportunity of the day, starting down Marcus Gilchrist, before eventually making him miss and sneaking into the end zone. He's scored a touchdown on every carry he's ever had against the Jets. That's impressive.

Mariota led the Jets down the field by almost exclusively throwing the ball, trying to get back into it. The Jets were stagnant running the ball, like they have been in Gurley’s absence, but they were down 10, so they were getting antsy and abandoned it temporarily. Super Mario got his guys to the edge of the goal line, and on third and goal, scrambled out left. But, before he could get It out to Kenbrell Thompkins, Reggie Ragland came flying out of nowhere and knocked the ball right out of Mariota’s hands. Jerry Hughes fell on it, and Bowles was sick to his stomach. Sam Freday, up in the owner’s box, was ready to trade Mariota, and the entire offensive line, as soon as he could. But, luckily, he didn’t. The Bills were deep in their own territory at the two minute warning, but of course, Josh Johnson defied the laws of logic and threw a couple deep balls to get the Bills in field goal range. It just made sense the way everything had gone. Succop made a longer one this time, but it was still good, and the Bills carried a 27-14 lead into the locker room.

Bowles was starting to think that this team was cursed when Mariota’s deep ball to Jackson at the start of the third quarter was batted down, and then picked off the ground by Ronald Darby. The good news was that Bowles had chewed out his defense at the break, and they were ready to play. Just a couple plays after the bad luck interception, LeSean McCoy got run over by a truck named David Harris, and Steve McLendon, in the right place at the right time picked up the fumbled and brought it back 52 yards while his teammates pinned down McCoy and Johnson. All of a sudden, the Jets were back in this thing. It was 27-21. With the crowd back in it, the Jets got some momentum. They forced their first punt of the day, from rookie punter Kenny Allen (from Michigan). The Jets finally found some success on the ground, using Matt Forte, and the play action passing game to work the football past midfield and just to the outskirts of field goal range, even though they wanted six. But, everything came to a screeching halt for what seemed like the billionth time this season. Mariota released it this time, to Devin Smith, who was WIIIIIIIDDDDDDE OPEN, but the rookie Ezra Robinson got there just in the nick of time. The ball went wobbling out forward, and it was Zach Brown’s turn to be in the right place at the right time. He picked it off and jogged untouched 62 yards to the house. The Jets jumped offside on the two point attempt, but Darron Lee sacked Josh Johnson, so it was all good, well, not really. It was still 33-21 Buffalo, and chants of “Let’s go, Buffalo!” were starting to break out at MetLife.

David Harris gets the action started, delivering a huge hit on LeSean McCoy. You can see Steve McLendon (99) ready to pounce in the foreground.

Go, big fella, go! Steve McLendon looks a lot like Todd Gurley as he breaks away from the pack during his scoop 'n' score in the 3rd quarter that brought new life to the crowd.

The same thing happened last week with Justin Houston. I'm getting pretty tired of this. Can't Mariota get the ball off in time? At least he's not getting hurt from all these shots he's taking.

The Jets got themselves back on track with Forte’s two yard head first dive into the end zone, cutting the Buffalo lead to five. Rex Ryan was starting to get a little nervous. He had been playing slap *** with his fellas all afternoon, but now he was feeling a little uneasy. On the ensuing Buffalo possession, Johnson tried his trick of scrambling out to throw across his body again, but he woefully overthrew Emmanuel Sanders, and Marcus Williams was there for the pick. After that, the Jets got hot, and they didn’t stop. A combination of runs and passes, but mostly passes, got the Jets into field goal range, but the Bills got a big stop on 3rd and 2, meeting Forte at the line of scrimmage at the 25 yard line. The Jets could use the field goal, which would cut the lead to two, but they took the risk. The call was for Devin Smith to run a quick double cut across the middle, and have Mariota get it to him. If he was covered, he didn’t have a whole lot of other safe options. But, he was open, so we were Gucci. The catch and run brought the Jets inside the five, and after a two yard run and incomplete pass to Gronk, Mariota took matters into his own hands, and forced his way into the end zone to give the Jets the lead. Then, he found Forte to put the Jets up by three, 36-33, with all of six minutes left. But, we were feeling good, because the Bills only had 70 yards of offense in the second half, after that doozy of a first half.

When Josh Johnson missed Sanders by a mile, the Jets finally started to settle down and firmly believe that they could in fact win this game. Mar-Will brings a collective sense of ease to Jets Nation.

Thankfully, the Jets finally broke through the Bills’ offensive line. It took a while, and the Bills even got a first down, but just as they thought they could tie the game, or even take the lead, Josh Johnson threw it away in distress, then dumped it off to Shady for a 3 yard gain. On third and long, the crowd finally screaming, Muhammad Wilkerson brought Johnson to the ground, FINALLY. And then, Kenny Allen shanked a punt that only traveled about 15 yards, landing in bounds before bouncing a couple of more yards in the Jets favor before going out of bounds. The Jets converted this opportunity into a quick score to put the game out of reach, with Mariota finding Gronkowski who fell to the ground to ensure that they hung onto the ball. It was 43-33, and the Jets had scored 22 unanswered in the 4th quarter. But, leave it to the Bills to get one last hurrah. Josh Johnson capped off his phenomenal day by hitting Sammy Watkins on a cross with 15 seconds left to make it 43-40. The Jets got the onside kick, and this game was over. We beat the Bills. That’s all there is to it. It only took 4 tries, and it certainly wasn’t pretty, but we got it done, and that’s all you can ask for: to be the better team on the field on that particular day. I can’t wait to spend Christmas in New Orleans.

                              Jets Gameday Preview: Week 16

The famous Superdome is properly illuminated tonight, just hours before Santa makes his run across the many parishes of the great state of Louisiana. Merry Christmas everybody!

It’s Christmas, but that doesn’t mean the Jets can slack off. Some members of Jets Nation want to see this team take a load off their starters, and glide into the playoffs, now that we’re finally healthy, but if you ask me, that’s not worth it. We’re in a tight battle with Houston for the #2 seed in AFC, and the perks that come with it, like the first round bye. Also, there’s still one wacky scenario in which we can secure the #1 seed: If the Jets, Chiefs, and Chargers all finish 12-4, then the Jets get the #1 seed, because the Chargers would win the AFC West, and the Jets would win the head to head tiebreaker against the Chargers, since we beat them last month in Los Angeles. And, to top it all off, T-Gurls is back! After being injured in that very game against the Chargers, Gurley returns, and after leading the NFL in rushing yards until the start of December, it is still very possible for the second year Jets’ halfback to retake the top spot over Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde. Plus, we wouldn’t want to help out the Saints, now would we? New Orleans is 9-5, currently holding the #6 seed in the NFC playoffs, but only 1 game out of the #2 seed, due to how good the South has been all season, with all four teams above .500. The Bucs have the edge, and the 9-5 Panthers have the head-to-head tiebreaker, leaving the Saints in the #6 seed. And while they’re almost assured a playoff spot (they can clinch with a win tonight), there is no doubt that they would like to move up to that #2 seed so that they can reintroduce the world to a playoff atmosphere at the Superdome. It has been a long time.

The Jets are finally healthy, and because of the recent play by Marcus Mariota, come into Nawlins with the league’s #1 offense. Mariota is trying to chase down Aaron Rodgers for the passing title, but the Saints will certainly attempt to prevent that, with their average to above average unit, the pitfall of this team in recent years. In fact, it is the improved state of the defense that has paved a road to success in 2017 for the Saints. Cameron Jordan has been waiting for this night all season, a chance to bring down the Jets’ newest star, and his energy is sure to inspire his mates on the defensive line, Sheldon Rankins, Nick Fairley, and the man with the most interesting name that Jets have seen all year, Hau’oli Kikaha. Shaquil Barrett is the leader of an otherwise veteran group of linebackers that will give it their best shot tonight when it comes to stopping Gurley, who is sure to come out with a chip on his shoulder. James Laurinaitis, Daryl Washington, and Josh Bynes highlight the other LBs that have gotten significant playing time for Sean Payton’s troops this year. Finally, the secondary features the rookie Quincy Wilson from Florida, who has been having an up and down year, but is currently experiencing one of the ups. Veterans Delvin Breaux and Alterraun Verner have proved to be very good mentors to Wilson, who hopes to develop into a shutdown corner in the near future, in a division that features Julio Jones and Mike Evans. Former Texas longhorn Kenny Vaccaro and the veteran journeyman Jairus Byrd get the start at safety.

Meanwhile, offense has never been the problem in New Orleans, and the Jets’ defense must get their act together, because if they play anything like they did last week, the Saints will surely score way too many points for the Jets to come back from. Drew Brees is now the league’s oldest QB, after Tom Brady’s retirement after winning Super Bowl LI last season. Mark Ingram has been effectively taking the load off the future hall of famer’s arm by putting together a more than adequate season running the ball. After injuries early in the year, he’s come back stronger, faster, and better than ever. And don’t even get me started on these Saints’ receivers. They might be some of the best in the league. Coby Fleener has been making Louisiana forget about the trade that sent Jimmy Graham to Seattle, while Brandin Cooks and Michael Thomas continue to approach their prime. And now, this season, Brees has found new pleasure in throwing to the two newest Saints’ wideouts, Marquess Wilson and rookie Carlos Henderson, the speed demon that played his college ball not too far away at Louisiana Tech. The thing that makes the Saints’ receivers so lethal is that they all complement each other well. Fleener is the big mauler, Cooks and Thomas are the deep threats, Wilson is the guy with the reliable hands, and Henderson is the one that can turn a crossing route into a touchdown catch and run. We’ve known all year that the Jets’ secondary is the worst area of the team. This should be interesting.

Gameday Recap: Saints 34, Jets 8
Drew Brees slices up Jets like a Christmas ham

Drew Brees makes it look easily, lobbing it up to a wide open Coby Fleener on the first play of the 4th quarter. The Saints' tight end did the rest of the work as the Saints took a 24-0 lead.

Oh crap. We got a problem. The injury bug bit the Jets for the second time this season, right when the Jets got all of their offensive firepower bag. This time, the bug hit the Jets two veteran receivers, Rob Gronkowski (again), and Vincent Jackson. Gronk dislocated his elbow, and V-Jax suffered a bruised sternum on consecutive drives in the first and second quarters. Jackson will be fine; he was just kept out of the game as a precaution. But Gronk? Stay tuned…

It started out as a nice defensive battle. I don’t know what happened. New Orleans got the ball first, and Drew Brees made quick work, completing a couple of medium length passes to his two favorite targets, Michael Thomas and Brandin Cooks. After trying to establish the run to no avail, Brees used his arm to get the Saints into the red zone. The Jets got some pressure and forced the future HOFer into a couple of incompletions, but on third down, Brees fired a strike to Marquess Wilson on an in route, and it looked like he was going to score. Dee Milliner and Darqueze Dennard closed on him quickly, so Wilson decided to dive head first, like the Jets have been doing recently, and as soon as he did, Milliner came up clutch and knocked the ball free just short of the goal line. Dennard picked it up, and fullback Derrick Coleman made a touchdown saving tackle at the two yard line; the Jets’ two yard line. The Jets got a little breathing room, but not much else, and had to punt. Lachlan Edwards pinned the Saints down at their own 10, and before we could blink, Jordan Jenkins brought Brees down at the 3, and the Saints had to punt, as the 1st quarter waned down. Mike Williams brought Thomas Morstead’s punt out to the Jets’ 45, and a string of completions put the Jets in striking distance. Mariota threw a bullet to Gronk, running a post, and the Jets valuable tight end took it to the 2, fighting all the way. But, then he didn’t get up, and Todd Bowles fell to the ground in disbelief. The big fella has been plagued by elbow issues in the past few seasons, and this time was no different. Officially, it is a dislocated elbow, and we can confirm that Gronk will miss some of the playoffs. We’ll tell you more about it soon. The Jets still had a shot. It was first and goal, after all. Gurley tried to take it in, and was stuffed at the 1. Mariota gave it again to his star running back, returning from his shoulder injury, on second down, and he broke the plane, but left guard Brian Winters was called for holding. So, the ball was brought back to the 10. And then, just like much of the low moments of the season have gone for the Jets, Mariota tried to force one into Jace Amaro, and it was picked off by Josh Bynes. It only went downhill from there. The Jets’ defense did do their part again, causing yet another Saints punt, and after another good return by Williams, it was Vincent Jackson’s turn to go down. His injury, occurring at around midfield, absolutely killed the momentum of the drive, and the Jets were forced to punt. Then, the Saints went marching in on this Chistmas Eve night.

The only time the Jets looked good tonight was the only time the Saints looked bad. Marquess Wilson pays the price for diving head first towards the goal line. Dee Milliner knocked it out, and Darqueze Dennard scooped it up, and tried to make a run for it, but that didn't last long.

Drew Brees led his offense on a long, painful drive (if you’re a Jets fan), in which New Orleans converted on three third downs. At times this season, the Jets’ inability to get stops on third down has really plagued them. Mark Ingram started to run the ball a little better, but not much; the Jets did a good job of keeping him in check, and as the Saints got into field goal range, the Jets finally got a stop on third down. Robbie Gould came out for a field goal, and Dee Milliner brought his A game, beating the offensive line, diving at full speed in an attempt to block the kick, but he missed, and was called for roughing the kicker, because Gould landed on top of him. The Saints got a first down at the 12 yard line, and after Buster Skrine lay a big hit on Michael Thomas causing New Orleans’ second year pass catcher to drop the ball, Thomas broke away from Skrine over the middle, and gave the game its first score, with just under two minutes to play in the first half. The Jets, on the ensuing drive, got to the 45, going for it on 4th and 3, but a key drop by Jace Amaro (he was wide open) gave the Saints the ball with a short field. Gould added a field goal in the final seconds to give the Saints a 10-0 lead going into the locker room.

Michael Thomas finds a hole between Buster Skrine (41) and Marcus Gilchrist, opening the scoring in this one. For the Saints, it was better late than never. It took awhile, but once they got going, they didn't stop.

At the start of the third quarter, the rest of the wheels fell off the Jets train. Taking the ball first out of the half, Mariota, getting desperate, tried to do too much with his depleted group of pass catchers, and a lack of knowledge of the route by Devin Smith caused Mariota to throw it behind him, and into the arms of the nearest Saints defender instead. New Orleans eventually turned it into points, with Brees finding Marquess Wilson, who held onto it this time, to make it 17-0. After another pick, Coby Fleener was found unguarded, waltzing into the end zone from 26 yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter. Now, the Jets didn’t give up, but it was too little too late. Mariota led a desperation drive, going no huddle for a series of plays before finding Gurley on an outlet for a touchdown, and Amaro over the middle for the two point conversion to make it 24-8.

Todd Gurley got the Jets on the board late in the third, but that was about it in terms of offensive highlights.

But, the Jets defense couldn’t get a stop. The Saints launched a six minute drive, and after getting stopped in field goal range, Gould came out for a long field goal attempt. But, of course, IT WAS A FAKE!!!!! The punter Thomas Morstead threw a perfect lob to safety Vonn Bell, and the Jets didn’t see it coming. But, they gathered themselves enough to hold the Saints to a field goal that Gould actually attempted, and made, from 29 yards out. It was 27-8 N’awlins. The Jets tried to create any kind of offense that looked even remotely like the team we’ve seen for the first 14 games this season, but it didn’t work. The Saints got the ball back on downs, and the Saints offense, having too much fun to help themselves, left the foot on the gas. Mark Ingram scored from 5 yards out with a minute to play, but the Jets didn’t care, because in that situation, they do the exact same thing. The game ended with the Jets in field goal range, but RoundingThird mistakenly hit the fake field goal play instead of the real field goal play, so this game ended with Geno Smith rolling out, and shoveling a pass off to Kellen Davis for a first down. The Jets walked out of the SuperDome with coal in their stockings, and concern in their hearts over the loss of Gronk.
