        Jets Gameday Preview: Week 5

After their first win of 2017, and a bye week to prepare, Bill Belichick brings his new look Patriots squad into MetLife Stadium this afternoon.

Ah, the defending champs. Why is it that, in the last three years of my Madden CFMs, the biggest division rival of the team I pick wins the Super Bowl in the CFM's first season? First, it was the Steelers in 2014, when I was playing as the Browns. Then, last year, it was the Packers when I was with the Vikings. And now, with the Jets, I witness yet another Super Bowl by the New England Patriots. I'm getting tired of seeing them succeed. Anyhow, the greatest person to ever step foot on the gridiron went out a champion, like Peyton Manning did the year before him. That's right, folks. Gone is Tom Brady. And, while you might look down, see that these Patriots are 1-3, and think to yourself that their dynasty, after 16 seasons, may finally be over, that is certainly not the case. Their three losses have been tough. After beating New Orleans in the Thursday Night game to start the season, putting up their banner and getting their rings in the process, they've lost three straight. They lost two close ones: To Tampa Bay at home, and Atlanta on the road. They also lost to the Bills at the Ralph, and we all know how every Patriots-Bills game is Rex Ryan's Super Bowl, so we can't really fault Belichick's guys for that. Brady might be gone, but Belichick is still doing his thing.

The plan was for Jimmy Garoppolo to become the next Boston superstar athlete whenever Tommy Terrific decided to call it quits, but Belichick and the Kraft family fell in love with Michigan State's Stuart McKinley, drafted him, and now start him instead. He's off to a pretty great start, giving Garoppolo pretty good trade stock if they choose that route. Included in the blueprints for continued success post-Brady was to keep the running game in tip-top shape. That part of the plan took a big hit when the Pats couldn't re-sign LeGarrette Blount, leaving the elusive Dion Lewis and James White to carry the brunt of the load, with Daniel "Boom" Herron lurking on the sideline in case either Lewis or White fumbles, because we all know Belichick's fumbling policy: If you cough it up, you get yourself acquainted with the bench, because you'll be living there for the foreseeable future.

The rest of this offense looks depleted, without the touch of Brady to carry them to greatness. Gone are Malcolm Mitchell and Chris Hogan, and if you even think about asking me what happened to Gronk, you won't wake up tomorrow. In this particular matchup, Julian Edelman is injured, leaving ex-Jet Eric Decker, Danny Amendola, Martellus Bennett, and two young WRs, Bradley Marquez and Virginia Tech rookie D.J. Dray as the pass catchers. It's still a solid looking group, but with a normal quarterback, their production has dropped significantly. The impact of Brady was so extraordinary.

Belichick's beloved defense still looks pretty solid on paper, but has struggled on the field. It's still Jabaal Sheard and Sheldon Richardson on the ends, with Terrance Knighton and Alan Branch as the inside run stoppers. The only new starter on this defense is Anthony Hitchens at one of the outside linebacker spots, joined by Jamie Collins and Shea McClellin, who replaces the injured Dont'a Hightower. That secondary is the same, with Super Bowl XLIX hero Malcolm Butler, interception machine Logan Ryan, and Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung at the safety positions. If this defense is virtually the same, how do they rank last in most of the major categories? Bill Belichick is guaranteed to change that at some point soon, if not today.

I've attempted to play this game a couple of times, and each time I try, the lag in the game is worse than anything I've ever seen, and highlights will not save. When I fix this problem, this post will be edited and replaced by the game recap. Don't think for a minute that I'm stopping this CFM.

A lot of bigtime acquisitions, and a dominant win last week! enjoying the presentation, even if I'm not an NFL dynasty guy, it still stands out as a really good dynasty etc.

Appreciate it! That means a lot coming from a guy like you. I've been a huge fan of your work forever. I'm more of a silent follower, but still. Thanks!

Yeah, that's probably why you're unable to play because something's wrong with EA's servers.

I don't know that for sure, but I suspect this is an EA thing.

Gameday Recap: Jets 37, Patriots 12
Jets annihilate Patriots, get season back on track

Todd Gurley disposes of Devin McCourty during this spin, en route to his 62 yard touchdown run in the first quarter, which set the tone for the rest of the day.

The Patriots are 1-4 and they have problems. There are the obvious ones, like how Bill Belichick’s famous defense is now atrocious, horrendous, and every synonym for “bad” that you can come up with. They were exposed by the Jets offense, which you can now say is clicking on all cylinders, putting up 82 points in the last two games. Marcus Mariota played a perfect game, except for one small error, an interception in the fourth that led to the Patriots final score of the afternoon. But, it didn’t matter, because he put on a show beforehand, and for a little while afterwards. Let’s get back to the Patriots. There’s also the problems you don’t see right away. They should be in sole possession of last in the AFC East, but Rex Ryan just won’t let that happen. He beat them a couple of weeks ago for Bills’ only win, but then keeps tanking himself.

The Patriots took the opening kickoff right down the field. Stuart McKinley looked pretty good, not only on this drive, but as a whole. He was faced with constant pressure from the Jets that led to a lot of passes thrown away. Leonard Williams had two first quarter sacks, but that was it in the sack department, although Williams, Wilkerson, Darron Lee, and Jordan Jenkins all got plenty of clean shots on the young Patriots rookie. Anyhow, the Patriots quickly ran into a wall when they realized that Dion Lewis would be completely shut down by the #1 ranked Jets run defense. When they got the ball inside the five, but couldn’t punch it in, things got fun. The Pats settled for a Gostkowski field goal, one of four on the day, extending the streak of touchdown futility against the Jets. You see, since Sam Freday took over the day to day operations of the Jets, the Patriots have not scored an offensive touchdown against the Jets. The last one? Gronk’s game tying score with under two minutes left in regulation in the Week 16 matchup in 2015, the game RoundingThird calls the best game, and best day, of his life.

Down 3-0, the Jets saw the ball for the first time all day, and only after a couple of plays, Todd Gurley broke free for a 62 yard touchdown, setting the Jets up for the offensive explosion that would occur. That Jets defense wasn’t playing lights out just yet. They gave up yards through the air, but I repeat, only gave up field goals. On the other side, a 3 yard hookup between Jackson and Mariota, the trust quickly forming between them made it 14-6 Jets, and capping a 6 minute drive. It was then when the Jets #1 ranked defense (coming into the day), started to do their thing. They forced a punt, got the ball back, and moved right into the end zone. However, they took a page out of the Patriots’ playbook by failing to get it into the end zone, getting a chip shot field goal from Nick Folk instead to make it 17-6. Another Patriots’ three and out followed, but Sheldon Richardson showed the MetLife crowd what he’s still capable of in his return to Northern New Jersey. He and Anthony Hitchens swarmed Mariota, hit him head on, and it was Richardson that recovered the fumble that resulted because of the hit. You try holding onto the ball getting nailed by two Patriots simultaneously. After yet another punt, the Jets had a couple of plays, and two timeouts, and just managed to get into field goal range before halftime. Nick Folk’s long field goal as time expired made it 20-6 going into the break.

T-Gurls shows the MetLife crowd who has the league's #1 rushing offense during the celebration of his 62 yard touchdown run.

The first drive of the second half finalized the Jets’ struggled to punch it into the end zone. Folk’s third consecutive field goal put them up 23-6, while Stuart McKinley led the one-dimensional New England offense into a black hole of punts. One particular Ryan Allen punt pined the Jets at their own 1. They got out of that, but had to punt soon thereafter, the only Jets’ punt of the day. Finally, McKinley broke through. You see, he was playing well, but for the first time this season, he didn’t have much of a run game behind him, so the fact that he had to rely on his arm and nothing but his arm made it seem that he played worse than he did. He threw for 230 yards, after all. That’s pretty good, considering the Pats had 5 punts and only 12 points. The Jets gave up yards, and certainly bent, but did not break once. Gostkowski proved his worth for the third time, and it was 23-9 early in the fourth quarter. That was when Mariota made his one mistake. He was scrambling out of the pocket, thinking about running it, but saw Jamie Collins and Alan Branch closing on him, so he put it up for Devin Smith/Gronk (they were in the same area), and it was instead picked off by the omnipresent Anthony Hitchens. That set up the finale to the Patriots field goal parade, with seven minutes left to play.

Taking a break from Gurley, the Jets decided to air it out. After all, it was 3rd and medium, and the came wasn’t completely over. Malcolm Butler bit on a play fake, and Mariota hit V-Jax over the top, with two or three steps on Butler, playing catch up on the play, but it was too late. Jackson was gone. He may be a veteran, but he’s still got some speed. It was 30-12, and after the years of embarrassment and heartbreak that the Patriots have provided to the Jets, it felt good to be on the right side of this blowout. A garbage time run by Todd Gurley in a failed attempt to get 200 rushing yard made it 37-12, and the Patriots limped off into their bye week at an abysmal 1-4, with multiple issues they need to fix. Billy’s going to be screaming at them in practice. I can’t wait to watch.

He gone! Mariota hits Vincent Jackson in stride, and the experienced, humble, vet took it the rest of the way without being touched, after Malcolm Butler bit on play action, a grand total of 75 yards on the pass and catch.

Because we're obligated to show Patriots highlights, here's Anthony Hitchens' sack and strip of Mariota on a massive hit to the ribs. Sheldon Richardson (99) was lurking nearby, and got the recovery.

Hmm, experienced and humble. I guess V jack has changed from his days in San Diego! Great game for the Jets, keep it up man.

I figured he's been humbled at some point along the way. He's gotten more experience, so maybe that means more humility. I see him as the next Brandon Marshall, so at least in my mind, he's humble.

I was shocked we handled them like that. I'm curious to see if the Pats turn it around, because they looked pretty bad, even though their QB McKinley seemed pretty decent.

                              Jets Gameday Preview: Week 6

The month long homestand for the Jets comes to an end tonight at MetLife, as the Raiders come to town for a Sunday Night showdown.

THE RRRAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIDERS! Derek Carr has led this team masterfully. At the halfway point last season, this Oakland team was in dead last in the AFC West, with an offense that was even worse. But, the still young Carr used that as a learning experience, and led his boys (aided by the defense) on a 7 game win streak, that put them in a position to get into the playoffs in week 17, albeit with a ton of help. This year, they might be off to an average start, at 2-3, but they believe in their franchise quarterback, their defense, and their coach Jack Del Rio.

Let's start with that defense, headed by what some might call the best defensive player in the league. Yup, Khalil Mack is certainly versatile, being able to slot down to defensive end, or drop back in coverage as a linebacker, blitzing as a pass rusher or run stopper from either position. The front seven around him is actually pretty darn good, with Mario Edwards, Jr. and rookie Emanuel Lawrie as the ends, when Mack is playing linebacker, and the group Ben Heeney, Jon Bostic, and the reinstated Aldon Smith as linebackers when Mack is up front. Secondarily speaking (see what I did there), you have Sean Smith, David Amerson, Reggie Nelson, and Karl Joseph.

Part of the culture change here in Oakland is the attraction of free agents. Looking at the offense, that is evident. Apparently, Green Bay wasn't good enough for Jared Cook. He left Aaron Rodgers' frozen tundra for sunnier skies and greener pastures in NoCal. He joins Amari Cooper, the AC to Carr's DC, Michael Crabtree as Carr's top pass catchers in an otherwise skimpy receiving corps. Rookie wide out Max McCaffrey, straight outta Duke has promising talents, but needs time to develop as a professional. Still, he should see some targets, especially against this Jets top ranked pass defense that will look to eliminate the CCC's from the end zone. Seriously though, the last names of Oakland's four best offensive players start with C. Does that C represent their championship aspirations? Potentially. Anyway, we know the Raiders are also capable of running you over, if Latavius Murray has a good day.

Also, it looks like the Raiders are becoming the island of misfits/druggos/convicts. We already mentioned Aldon Smith, but they also have Josh Gordon, who will miss this game with injury, and Jonathan "Football" Manziel, who appears on the bottom of Oakland's quarterback depth chart.

Gameday Recap: Jets 39, Raiders 29
Jets overcome porous pass coverage, non-existent running game to pull off clutch win

E-NUN-WA!!! You probably didn't see it coming, I know I didn't, but Quincy Enunwa was the hero of this game, with a 59 yard catch and run seconds after Mariota took a huge sack. This is Enunwa giving the touchdown symbol to the crowd in celebration.

I’ve never seen Coach Bowles go from seething with rage to overwhelming joy in such a short time. The Jets found themselves down 4, needing a two minute drill, with a touchdown, after their pass defense got picked apart by Derek Carr. As well as they had been playing, you had to expect that this would happen eventually. After all, this is the most depleted area of the Jets roster, after offseason trades to build the offense sent away Darrelle Revis and Calvin Pryor III. And on the other side of the ball, the Raiders defense, which came in ranked dead last in total yards allowed, played one hell of a game. They completely shut down the Jets’ running game, their strength and lifeline, marking the first game since the acquisition of Mariota that the Jets rushed for under 100 yards. Their front seven were all over Mariota all day, ending up with 5 sacks, and countless frustrations. It’s a miracle Mariota didn’t turn it over once. So, the Jets had 111 total yards of offense in the first half, and found themselves trailing 13-10.

Even though Gurley was shut down, he still scored twice. His first put the Jets ahead shortly before halftime by a score of 10-7. The Raiders countered with an air attack, which fizzled out after the Jets finally got to Derek Carr. The books say that the Jets only got two sacks, both from Mo Wilkerson, but the pass rush affected many more plays than that. Greg Zuerlein came out to tie it, with enough time for the Jets to score again. Well, that was the case, if Mariota hadn’t gone 0-3 passing on three consecutive plays, resulting in a punt into the wind that gave Oakland the ball just short of midfield. On third down, Carr scrambled, and threw across his body to a wide open Jared Cook, whom the Jets flat out could not stop, after Amari Cooper was injured on the game’s opening drive. It was an anomaly that Cook didn’t score right then and there. He got down to the 4, before the Jets did one of those bend but don’t break things and forced a field goal.

With limited time to throw, and no run game to speak of, Mariota turned to his most reliable option: Gronk. After all, you just need to toss it up in his area and there’s a pretty good chance he’ll get it. He hit Gronk for three straight plays to get the ball into field goal range. After a brief attempt trying to get Gurley going, Mariota rolled out on play action and threw a strike to Jace Amaro in the end zone to get the crowd back in it. After the Raiders embarked on a long drive that ended in a field goal, their run game even less effective than the Jets, it was 17-16. That score would hold until the end of the third quarter, when the Jets had a third and long coming. They were in their own territory, and so when Mariota finally broke free and dove for the first down, the Jets felt like they had broken out of this offensive funk. But, the refs gave him an awful spot, and he was feet shy of the first down. After a long deliberation, Coach Bowles decided to go for it, and handed it to Gurley right up the middle. HE WAS STUFFED!!! The Raiders got the ball just on the brink of field goal range, but like we said, Derek Carr picked apart the Jets defense. He got them down inside the five, before Latavius Murray dove into the end zone emphatically. In an effort to go up by 7, the Raiders went for two, but Wilkerson pummeled Carr for a sack, leaving the score at 22-17.

Jace Amaro gets up to bring his second touchdown of the season. Kudos to Mariota for putting it in the perfect place.

The Jets knew exactly what they needed. They couldn’t afford to turn the ball over. Nobody on either team had turned it over all game. They knew that they had to convert their third downs, taking away any possibility of a repeat of the last drive. So, they played it safe, calling plays they were comfortable with, slowly moving the ball downfield. Eventually they got into a goal to go situation, and after an out route to Gronk got them to the 1, with Gronk trying unsuccessfully his hardest to push for the extra yards against the three Oakland defenders trying to push him down, Gurley forced his way in for his second touchdown, a nice consolation prize after being shut down. The Jets went for two, up by only 1 after the touchdown. Mariota dumped it off to Gurley on a crossing route, and he sidestepped his way in to make it 25-22 with 3:18 remaining.

But Carr and Cook weren’t done. After quickly working it into field goal range, Carr found a wide open Cook once again (can anybody cover this guy?) over the middle of the field, and all of a sudden, the Jets defenders forgot how to shed a block. Darqueze Dennard had a golden opportunity to at least push Cook out of bounds, and hope to hold Oakland to a game tying field goal, but Michael Crabtree took a page out of Michael Oher in The Blind Side and blocked Dennard until it hurt, allowing Cook to sneak in untouched for six. With just under two minutes to play, the Raiders were back in front 29-25.

Jared Cook takes the final steps to the end zone, just out running Marcus Gilchrist, who tried to be the hero by coming from the other side of the field to make the play, but ultimately couldn't.

Now, time to infuriate Coach Bowles. After the kickoff, a decent return by Gurley, Mariota threw it away under pressure on first down, and dumped it off to Gurley on a screen pass for a gain of two on second down. In need of something big on 3rd and 8, Mariota instead let himself get sacked trying to escape pressure. So, on fourth and long, Mariota looked to Gronk on everyone’s favorite play, four verticals. He had enough for the first down, but was in tight coverage with Ben Heeney. Mariota threw a strike, and Gronk needed two hands to hold onto it, but he did, so the Jets breathed a quick sigh of relief. Mariota hustled the troops up to the line, before getting sacked again, that aforementioned play that pissed Bowles off greatly. To let himself calm down before he made a bad decision that cost the Jets the game, he called timeout. Mariota regrouped the offense. He wasn’t frustrated taking all those sacks, which is all that mattered. He called a wheel route for Gronk, but had Quincy Enunwa over the middle, who earlier in the game, made his first catch of the season. On this play, though, Enunwa showed why he’s RoundingThird’s favorite player, making a defender miss, then sprinting the rest of the way to the end zone, pointing to the crowd the entre time. Folk’s PAT made it 32-29, but the Raiders still had a shot, with 3 timeouts and 42 seconds.

The catch by Quincy Enunwa. The run that would follow would result in Mariota leading his first comeback win since coming over to the Jets.

First down, Carr drops back, but pressure from the Great White Shark, Leonard Williams, forced him to throw it away. Second down? Same thing. Third down? Same thing, but the pressure came from Wilkerson, and he got all the way home for a sack, forcing Jack Del Rio to call timeout. On fourth down and 17, Carr threw up a desperation heave to Cook, but Darron Lee stepped in front of it, and put the exclamation point on this game by taking it to the house. The first turnover of the game could not come at a worse time for the Raiders. It cost them the game. And, just for kicks, the Jets got another pick. Darryl Morris picked off a Hail Mary in the end zone in the closing seconds. So, after that offensive nightmare in the first half, the Jets still ended up with 39 points. See what happens when you don’t turn the ball over? Off to Tampa, to regain our acquaintances with Mr. Revis.

What's not to love about Darron Lee? He can rush the passer, stop the run, drop back into coverage and defend passes, and in this case, intercept said passes, run them back for a pick six, and show off as he does so.
