Gameday Recap: Rams 41, Jets 38 (F/OT)
Fitzpatrick leads Rams to victory despite a record day by Jets offense
Greg Zuerlein watches his game-winning field goal go through the uprights. The Jets were extremely let down today.
Author’s Note: On the play before the Kenbrell Thompkins TD in the 2nd quarter, I lost connection to the EA servers, and lost all my highlights. Then, at the end of the 4th quarter, the game froze, so I lost all my highlights up to that point. Thus, the only highlights you see are from overtime. Thanks to EA though for introducing the auto recover feature for CFM games. If I had lost this amazing game, I would have been very disappointed.
This was a purely amazing game. The Jets lost, somehow, but I’m not quite sure who I can blame. This game should have been a blowout. The defense dominated the Rams except for a few explosive plays. The Jets’ offense owned time of possession, and Geno Smith played the best game of his life, throwing for over 400 yards, 199 of which were to Gronk. Geno did have his usual number of turnovers (4), but only one was costly, and it wasn’t even his fault. He overthrow a screen pass to Tommy Bohanon early in the 4th quarter, and E.J. Gaines picked it out of the sky, and returned it 51 yards to tie the game at 31. He did have a fumble at the Jets’ 10 early in the game, but Todd Bowles’ defense came up with a goal line stand, hold LA to a field goal that made it 7-3. Other than that, Geno was incredible, and so was the defense. Buster Skrine made a fantastic one handed interception on the drive before that aforementioned Geno fumble, and Marcus Gilchrist came up with a clutch INT on 3rd down late in the 3rd quarter.
In the first half, the Rams could not stop Gronk. Geno found Gronk 8 times in the first half, for over 150 yards and two scores, both coming on plays of at least 35 yards. Actually, the Rams couldn’t stop anybody on the Jets, except Todd Gurley, who averaged less than 4 yards per carry, but still ran for over 100 yards. That’s how many yards the Jets offense had. Right after the second Gronk TD (in the 1st quarter) made it 14-3 Jets, Tavon Austin returned the kickoff 91 yards to keep the Rams in the ballgame. The Jets responded with a long drive ending in a field goal, which marked the end of Todd Bowles’ conservative approach, as he went for it 4 times on 4th down, converting all 4, including two on the drive that put the Jets ahead with under a minute to play. But, we’ll get there. After the Folk field goal made it 17-10, Benny Cunningham went untouched for 58 yards to tie it. But, the Jets kept moving the ball, with no form of resistance from Los Angeles, and Geno found Kenbrell Thompkins for his 3rd TD of the first half, and putting him over 200 passing yards in the half. That score would hold until halftime. 24-17 New York.
In the first drive out of the break, the Jets had their only three and out of the afternoon, and Jared Goff responded on the next drive with his only good throw of the day, a 46 yard hookup with Kenny Britt on a 3rd down slant, in which the Jets played far too aggressively. We were tied once again. The Jets methodically moved the ball down the field on the following drive, going for it inside the 1, with Geno handing it off to the fullback Bohanon for the score and the lead. It would be 31-24 Jets at the end of the third.
Shortly into the 4th quarter, Jordan Jenkins sacked Goff, and the #1 pick in this year’s draft did not get up. The Jets fans quickly got excited, because they knew who was coming into the game. That’s right, Fitzy. The Rams got a first down on the ground, then Fitz got drilled by Leonard Williams as he threw it away, much to the delight of the crowd. The Rams ended up punting. This was the drive with the only killer mistake for the Jets, even though I cannot stress enough that it wasn’t Geno’s fault. Bohanon was wide open on a screen, but didn’t even look when Geno threw it to him, and as a result, E.J. Gaines caught it instead, and took it to the house. 31-31. The Jets embarked on a methodical drive, taking a bunch of time, but leaving too much on the clock in the end. They finally got the running game going, and T-Gurls broke 100 yards against his old teammates. The drive concluded with a 17 yard touchdown from Geno to Gronk, who only had 2 catches in the second half. The Jets had a 7 point lead with 58 seconds, but the Jets were met with a version of Ryan Fitzpatrick that they didn’t see in the first 4 games of 2016, and hadn’t seen since the Patriots game in Week 16 of 2015. He just could not be stopped. He completed the first three passes of the drive, but then got the dagger. On first and 10 from the 30, and the crowd going absolutely berserk, Fitzpatrick stepped up and threw a jump ball to Kenny Britt, who was one on one with Buster Skrine. It was as if Skrine just froze. It was Britt’s ball, but Skrine didn’t even jump, and didn’t move once Britt caught it and waltzed into the end zone to tie the game with 17 seconds left.
In overtime, the Jets got a first down to Gronk, putting him a yard short of 200, but then had to punt, after a clutch sack by Aaron Donald, and a 3rd down drop by Devin Smith. On 3rd down and 6, with the crowd once again going absolutely bonkers, Bennie Cunningham broke free, and looked bound for the end zone, but Buster Skrine came up with the hustle play of the day and tracked him down at the 8. Instead of kicking the field goal right then and there, Fitzpatrick tried to get it in for 6, just to spite his old team and his old fans, but he couldn’t, throwing it away twice after a dump off on first down for a gain of 5 to the 3 yard line. It didn’t matter, as Zuerlein came onto make what is probably the shortest game-winning field goal he’ll ever have.
Bennie Cunningham breaks free in overtime, thinking the game was over, but you see Buster Skrine (41) coming to track him down.
Well, now we have a bye week, and two weeks to prepare for the biggest game of the season: the Patriots at home.
