Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)

    Gameday Recap: Rams 41, Jets 38 (F/OT)
Fitzpatrick leads Rams to victory despite a record day by Jets offense

Greg Zuerlein watches his game-winning field goal go through the uprights. The Jets were extremely let down today.

Author’s Note: On the play before the Kenbrell Thompkins TD in the 2nd quarter, I lost connection to the EA servers, and lost all my highlights. Then, at the end of the 4th quarter, the game froze, so I lost all my highlights up to that point. Thus, the only highlights you see are from overtime. Thanks to EA though for introducing the auto recover feature for CFM games. If I had lost this amazing game, I would have been very disappointed.

This was a purely amazing game. The Jets lost, somehow, but I’m not quite sure who I can blame. This game should have been a blowout. The defense dominated the Rams except for a few explosive plays. The Jets’ offense owned time of possession, and Geno Smith played the best game of his life, throwing for over 400 yards, 199 of which were to Gronk. Geno did have his usual number of turnovers (4), but only one was costly, and it wasn’t even his fault. He overthrow a screen pass to Tommy Bohanon early in the 4th quarter, and E.J. Gaines picked it out of the sky, and returned it 51 yards to tie the game at 31. He did have a fumble at the Jets’ 10 early in the game, but Todd Bowles’ defense came up with a goal line stand, hold LA to a field goal that made it 7-3. Other than that, Geno was incredible, and so was the defense. Buster Skrine made a fantastic one handed interception on the drive before that aforementioned Geno fumble, and Marcus Gilchrist came up with a clutch INT on 3rd down late in the 3rd quarter.

In the first half, the Rams could not stop Gronk. Geno found Gronk 8 times in the first half, for over 150 yards and two scores, both coming on plays of at least 35 yards. Actually, the Rams couldn’t stop anybody on the Jets, except Todd Gurley, who averaged less than 4 yards per carry, but still ran for over 100 yards. That’s how many yards the Jets offense had. Right after the second Gronk TD (in the 1st quarter) made it 14-3 Jets, Tavon Austin returned the kickoff 91 yards to keep the Rams in the ballgame. The Jets responded with a long drive ending in a field goal, which marked the end of Todd Bowles’ conservative approach, as he went for it 4 times on 4th down, converting all 4, including two on the drive that put the Jets ahead with under a minute to play. But, we’ll get there. After the Folk field goal made it 17-10, Benny Cunningham went untouched for 58 yards to tie it. But, the Jets kept moving the ball, with no form of resistance from Los Angeles, and Geno found Kenbrell Thompkins for his 3rd TD of the first half, and putting him over 200 passing yards in the half. That score would hold until halftime. 24-17 New York.

In the first drive out of the break, the Jets had their only three and out of the afternoon, and Jared Goff responded on the next drive with his only good throw of the day, a 46 yard hookup with Kenny Britt on a 3rd down slant, in which the Jets played far too aggressively. We were tied once again. The Jets methodically moved the ball down the field on the following drive, going for it inside the 1, with Geno handing it off to the fullback Bohanon for the score and the lead. It would be 31-24 Jets at the end of the third.

Shortly into the 4th quarter, Jordan Jenkins sacked Goff, and the #1 pick in this year’s draft did not get up. The Jets fans quickly got excited, because they knew who was coming into the game. That’s right, Fitzy. The Rams got a first down on the ground, then Fitz got drilled by Leonard Williams as he threw it away, much to the delight of the crowd. The Rams ended up punting. This was the drive with the only killer mistake for the Jets, even though I cannot stress enough that it wasn’t Geno’s fault. Bohanon was wide open on a screen, but didn’t even look when Geno threw it to him, and as a result, E.J. Gaines caught it instead, and took it to the house. 31-31. The Jets embarked on a methodical drive, taking a bunch of time, but leaving too much on the clock in the end. They finally got the running game going, and T-Gurls broke 100 yards against his old teammates. The drive concluded with a 17 yard touchdown from Geno to Gronk, who only had 2 catches in the second half. The Jets had a 7 point lead with 58 seconds, but the Jets were met with a version of Ryan Fitzpatrick that they didn’t see in the first 4 games of 2016, and hadn’t seen since the Patriots game in Week 16 of 2015. He just could not be stopped. He completed the first three passes of the drive, but then got the dagger. On first and 10 from the 30, and the crowd going absolutely berserk, Fitzpatrick stepped up and threw a jump ball to Kenny Britt, who was one on one with Buster Skrine. It was as if Skrine just froze. It was Britt’s ball, but Skrine didn’t even jump, and didn’t move once Britt caught it and waltzed into the end zone to tie the game with 17 seconds left.

In overtime, the Jets got a first down to Gronk, putting him a yard short of 200, but then had to punt, after a clutch sack by Aaron Donald, and a 3rd down drop by Devin Smith. On 3rd down and 6, with the crowd once again going absolutely bonkers, Bennie Cunningham broke free, and looked bound for the end zone, but Buster Skrine came up with the hustle play of the day and tracked him down at the 8. Instead of kicking the field goal right then and there, Fitzpatrick tried to get it in for 6, just to spite his old team and his old fans, but he couldn’t, throwing it away twice after a dump off on first down for a gain of 5 to the 3 yard line. It didn’t matter, as Zuerlein came onto make what is probably the shortest game-winning field goal he’ll ever have.

Bennie Cunningham breaks free in overtime, thinking the game was over, but you see Buster Skrine (41) coming to track him down.

Well, now we have a bye week, and two weeks to prepare for the biggest game of the season: the Patriots at home.

              Jets Gameday Preview: Week 12

It's Patriots Week! If you ain't hyped, you ain't human.

Who remembers what happened last time? It was the happiest day of my life. On December 27, 2015, I sat in the lobby of my hotel at the Beaver Creek Ski Resort in Avon, Colorado. I was already excited, because I was going to be able to watch the game on the local CBS affiliate. I figured they would show the Chiefs game instead, as they were locked in a tight battle for the AFC West with the hometown Broncos. Anyway, at the time of kickoff, 11 AM local time, there were about 5 of us huddled around the fire watching, and they were all Jets fans. At half time, when the Jets had a lead, the Patriots fans began to show up, but more and more Jets fans also started coming around, making the trek down to the lobby from their room once they realized that this hotel was popular among New Yorkers, so they'd be in good company. But, the Patriots came back, and the few vivacious Patriots fans came storming back, showing their pride. The game itself was arguably the game of the year in the NFL, but the atmosphere in the lobby made everything 20 times better.

When the game went to overtime, all of the fair-weather Jets fans (so, not me) were convinced that the Patriots were going to pull it out, because, let's face it, don't they always find a way to win in these close games? Isn't that why the rest of the league hates them? But, the momentum quickly shifted. Patriots special teamer/WR Matthew Slater screwed up the coin toss (or so they say), and the Jets got the all first even though the Patriots had won the toss. My fellow Jets fans suddenly got brazenly optimistic, while the Patriots fans in the far corner got quieter and quieter, biting their nails down to the stub out of anxiety. On the second play of that first drive, Ryan Fitzpatrick found Quincy Enunwa for a HUUUUUUUUUGE gain, and everybody in that lobby went nuts. A couple of the concierges, Broncos fans (Patriots haters), came running over, as they knew what was going on. When Eric Decker scored and invented the Meadowlands Mosh a couple of plays later to give the Jets the win, I started sharing hugs with all of the grown men around me, jumping for joy, and screaming like a teenage girl in front of her music idol. The Patriots fans, including my dad, quietly sulked away in the corner, before leaving as inconspicuous as possible, trying to avoid any trash talk, which fortunately didn't ever start up.

And now, we're met on this Sunday night at that same venue in Northern New Jersey, with what could be even bigger stakes than last time. Yes, there is much more time left in the season than that game, making it less important, but the Jets want to show the Patriots they mean business, again. The Jets at 6-4, are currently on the outside looking in to the playoff picture, just behind the two wild card teams, San Diego and Tennessee, who tied one another a couple weeks ago. The Patriots, coming in at 8-2, can take a big step towards yet another AFC East crown with a win, as well as take charge of the AFC, trying to lock up home field advantage throughout the playoffs, a thing that has gotten them to more Super Bowls than I can count. A Pats' loss, and they no longer control their own destiny in either race. A Jets' loss would require a little more work than desired to get in the position to get Brandon Marshall into the playoffs for the first time ever.

And, one other thing, as if this game could even bigger. In early October, if you remember, Sam Freday played mind tricks on Robert Kraft, and got him to trade Rob Gronkowski to Gang Green, but in exchange for Eric Decker and Sheldon Richardson, both of whom make their first return to the Meadowlands this evening. Oh yeah, and the Patriots bring in one of the league's best offenses AND defenses. Get hyped or go home.

Gameday Recap: Patriots 12, Jets 10
Gurley's fumble inside the five with under two minutes left costs the Jets

The Jets thought that all they had to do was hand the ball off to Todd Gurley to milk the clock away and win the game. However, Patrick Chung got all of his anger out, and Gurley coughed up the football for the first time all season.

I'd like to pick this one up halfway through the 3rd quarter. A Stephen Gostkowski field goal had just made it 12-3 Patriots. Tom Brady was befuddled by the Jets defense. Calvin Pryor picked him off in the first. Darrelle Revis picked him off in the second. The Jets were clutch on third down, stopping LeGarrette Blount every single time he ran it on 3rd down. The crowd was amazing, and the Jets' defensive line kept urging them on. But, the Jets offense was struggling, with 97 total yards to this point in the 3rd quarter. The Patriots were shutting down Gronk. He didn't have a single catch in the first half, and wasn't even targeted. Well, if anybody knows how to stop Gronk, it must be the Patriots, right? And, after a couple big gains early, Gurley struggled to find very much running room against Bill Belichick's defense, meaning that for the first half, the Jets relied on Geno Smith's arm, throwing to anybody but Gronk. By now, you must see why onl 3 points were scored. Those game on the first drive, before the run game was shut down.

But, after Gostkowski's 4th field goal, and the final Patriots points of the day, leaving them without a touchdown, things started to change. Geno found Gronk for a quick 5 yard pass, but it was enough to get the rest of the offense flowing. Gurley got the crowd right back into it with a 30 yard run, highlighted by a fantastic stiff arm to Devin McCourty, and providing the first, and only touchdown of the game for either team. The Jets came right back on defense. On first down, Brady found old friend Eric Decker on a quick slant, but Revis knocked the ball free with a big hit, continuing a classic performance from #24.

Todd Gurley gets away from Devin McCourty with this stiff arm, then takes it to the house.

The Patriots ended up going three and out, punting for the first time all day, and the Jets felt the momentum clearly shifting in their favor. The next Jets drive quickly turned into the start of the 4th quarter, and the first play of the 4th was a 22 yard catch and run from Geno to Gurley on a screen pass. Then, Geno found Devin Smith for 15 on a crossing route, and Gronk for 28 on play action. All of a sudden, the Jets were in the red zone, down 2, and all they needed to take the lead was a Nick Folk field goal going with a 12 mph wind. Gurley got stuffed on first down, but Geno scrambled down to the 5 yard line for a first down on the next play. Gurley cut back and found a hole, but was brought down at the 3. But, on second and goal, Geno overthrow Gronk, who was wide open crossing the goal line, and the ball floated towards Brandon Marshall, who could have had it, until he broke inside as part of his route, leaving Devin McCourty the only one with a chance, and he picked it off, because if he didn't, Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia would have beaten him up. The Pats got a quick first down, further killing the momentum, and quieting the crowd a bit, but Blount was stopped for a loss, then Brady found Amendola on a check down, leaving a 3rd and 5 at the Pats' own 45. The Jets pass coverage continued to be phenomenal, playing a touch cover 2 zone all day long, so Brady check out of the called play, and called a screen for the quick 3rd down back, Dion Lewis. He had a hole, but Darron Lee came out of nowhere, and made a clutch open field tackle, giving the Jets a very good chance to redeem themselves.

Here's that demoralizing INT. Geno gets hit and taken out, Gronk reaches out in desperation, B-Marsh turns the other way, all while McCourty calmly collects himself to make the catch.

Ryan Allen punted to the 23, and on the first play, it was Geno to Gronk, again, this time for a gain of 18, followed up by another completion to Gurley on the screen, this time for only 9 yards. After Gurley was stuffed on 2nd down, Todd Bowles was faced with a tough decision, but he gave it right back to his running back, who gained 5 on 3rd and 1. After another 3rd down conversion by Gurley 3 minutes later, the Jets just had to sit on the ball. The Patriots were already using up their timeouts, fresh out of the two minute warning. In order to do so, Todd Bowles called for a fresh dose of Gurley, who could be relied on, and had been relied on all season. But this time. On first down from the 17, he got a huge hole, running right up the middle and getting inside the five before a massive hit by Patrick Chung knocked the ball free, a truly devastating fumble for Gurley, his first of the season. As bad as it sounded, the Jets weren't out of it because they had all 3 timeouts, and the Patriots were starting from inside the 5. They could either get a safety and tie it, or force a three and out, and get the ball back with roughly a minute left. They stuffed Blount on the first two, and just at the crowd felt like they would have one last shot, Mo Wilkerson came through, and wrestled Blount down 5 yards short of the first down, but he accidently got his hand caught on the facemask of Blount, and was called out for it. First down Patriots. Game over.

Darrelle Revis kind of did it all today, and here he stepped in front of his good friend and former teammate, Eric Decker, in order to pick off his good friend and former teammate, Tom Brady.

                      Jets Gameday Preview: Week 13

We're into the home stretch of the season now, and the Colts come in to wrap up the Jets' long home stand in what is a very important Monday Night game.

Okay. We're into December, so the end of the season is in sight. Does that mean playoffs, or does that mean going home unhappy? We know how much B-Marsh wants it, having never played a single postseason snap. The Jets, as a team, are in pretty good shape. They have some work to do, sitting a full game behind Tennessee for the last Wild Card spot. At this point, the division is probably out of reach. After last week's win, the Patriots hold a 3 game lead with 5 to play, a lead that they almost certainly will not blow. So, the Jets are locked in a wild card race. After holding Tom Brady under 200 passing yards last week, the Jets now own the league's #1 overall defense. On the flip side, it would be nice to see some consistent offensive production from somebody other than Gronk and Gurley, but the Jets are finding ways to win, which is very important, considering that 2 of the Jets' 5 remaining games are against division leaders (NE and SF), and this game tonight is against a 5-6 Colts team that might be struggling, but still knows how to score points, and still finds themselves in the playoff race as well. Take nothing for granted this evening.

Andrew Luck has been doing it all for the Colts this season. As expected, they are a pass first team, and the crew of T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, and tight end Dwayne Allen are his pass catching clique. This past spring, the seasoned vet Frank Gore was brought in to balance the Indy offense, but he has taken the back seat to Charles Sims III, who has been a breakout talent this season after bouncing around a little bit, starting with Tampa and ending with free agency. He has provided a huge spark in the run game, but the life of this team still depends on the arms of the man with the flip phone.

The Colts defense, however, is average at best. They've been the Achilles heel of this team all year, so maybe, just maybe, the Jets can get a little bit of offense tonight. Looking at the bodies of this defense, you'll see Kendall Langford, Chris Canty, and Zach Kerr up front, the former two being experienced veterans going through tough times this year, and the latter starting to show his true potential in his third year in the league. Moving back a level now, we'll find Erik Walden, tackle machine D'Qwell Jackson, and vets Trent Cole and Robert Mathis. These four represent the best this defense has to offer, whether it be in coverage, rushing the passer, or stopping the run. They've proven themselves in the NFL for years upon years to be fantastic athletes, and wonderful men. You could argue that they do a better job in pass coverage than the secondary, which features Vontae Davis, Patrick Robinson, Louis Delmas, and Mike Adams. No matter how you view it, this just might be the most important game for the Jets this season, trying to snap a two game home losing streak, and what we'd like to think is the most entertaining Monday Night Football game this season. At least Gruden thinks so.

Gameday Recap: Jets 58, Colts 44
Offensive explosion led by Geno's 6 TDs, 400 yards

Gronk celebrates his long TD in the second, just one of the many explosive plays the Jets' offense had on the day, but it did come with a price: Gronk left shortly after this play with a ruptured disk, and is out for the rest of the regular season.

Ordinarily, I would be very upset over what was probably a very humiliating loss. The pass coverage was abysmal. Other than Revis, the Jet's secondary appeared flat-footed, perhaps a result of the incredibly physical and emotional game last week. Andrew Luck picked apart the Jets, but the reason that I'm satisfied with the result of this game is because the Colts' defense played even worse. The only thing they had going for them was Zach Kerr, who recovered two fumbles, one for a touchdown, and the blocked extra point after the third New York touchdown.

With all of that in mind, the game couldn’t have started much worse for the Jets. The Colts took the ball right down the field on the game’s opening drive, with Luck and Charles Sims making the Jets look foolish. If it weren’t for a Jets’ goal line stand, something they’re quickly becoming known for, the Colts would have taken an early 7-0 lead. But, since the Jets got that stop at the goal line, the Colts were stuck with a chip shot field goal from the ageless wonder Adam Vinatieri. But it gets better. The 2nd play for the Jets offense was a screen to Gurley, which he very quickly fumbled, recovered by the aforementioned Zach Kerr, and returned to the onset of field goal range. Thankfully, the Jets’ defense returned the favor. Leonard Williams sacked and stripped Luck, while Jordan Jenkins scooped and scored, quickly making it 7-3 Jets, and setting the tone for the onslaught of points that would follow.

Williams wraps up Luck, knocking the ball loose, with Jordan Jenkins (48) ready to pounce.

Jenkins makes his move, scooping it up…

And finally, Jenkins eludes a last minute surge by Sims to hit pay dirt.

But, the Colts weren’t just going to roll over. They took up the remaining 7 minutes of the 1st quarter taking their time, and chipping away at that Jets defense, until Luck finally found T.Y. Hilton from 3 yards out on the first play of the 2nd, making it 10-7 Indy. So, the Jets only ran two plays in the first quarter, and one of them was a fumble by the same guy who cost the Jets a victory last week. It was all good, though. Gurley redeemed himself by breaking off a 67 yard run on the first play after the kickoff, putting the Jets in the red zone. The only small hiccup after that was the 5 plays it took the Jets to score from inside the 5, including the 1 yard dash on 4th down by Gurley that finally got them in. But the Colts still wouldn’t go away. Charles Sims broke free on the edge, taking it 25 yards to the house, all of three minutes later, and it was Indy in the lead once again, 17-14.

That’s when the Jets went off and didn’t look back. It started with Geno finding Gronk only somewhat wide open on a crossing route. He immediately took off, or was it just the Colts’ DBs slowing down, and 53 yards later, did a Gronk Spike. The PAT was blocked, so it was still a field goal game. The Jets finally got a stop, and the Colts had to punt into the wind from deep in their own territory, so the Jets started out in pretty good shape. Geno, sensing a pretty big opportunity, got it right back to Gronk on two straight plays, the second being another long catch and run, this time of 39 yards, and the Colts could sense that this game was quickly getting out of hand, which is why, on the ensuing drive, Luck threw it up to T.Y. in the end zone, in one on one coverage with Marcus Gilchrist. I think Gilchrist won that battle, coming down with the pick. The Jets had 80 yards, one minute, and two timeouts to work with, and were certainly feeling it. Guess who Geno went after? Why, Gronk, of course! He found his superstar over the middle (after a couple of plays) to get the Jets in field goal range, but that wasn’t good enough, even when Gronk wouldn’t get up. The air came out of the MetLife Stadium crowd, as this looked pretty serious. Gronk was holding his back, which has been his weakness over the last couple of years with the Patriots. He eventually got up, but his playing time in 2016 was done, at least in the regular season. With what turned out to be a ruptured disk, he’ll be out until at least the Divisional Round of the playoffs, if the Jets happen to get there.

Nice pick, Gilchrist. Luck really overthrew that one, didn't he?

Geno didn’t want to have that bring the whole team down, so to keep morale up, he called the same play, and threw it right to Jace Amaro, Gronk’s replacement, who took it down inside the 10 to around the 5. Devin Smith got the job done from there, hauling in a bullet from Geno in heavy traffic, stretching the Jets’ halftime lead to 34-17.

The third quarter turned into the Devin Smith show. It is important to know that the Jets still maintained a balanced offense, running it with Gurley on 1st down, then having Geno Smith hook up with Devin Smith on a play action bootleg for a 74 yard touchdown, making it 41-17. The Colts took some of the momentum away, embarking on a 4 minute drive ending with a long 55 yard field goal by Vinatieri. No worries, because both Smiths, Geno and Devin, weren’t done. 47 seconds, and one Devin Smith 68 yard catch, later, the Jets were back to making the Colts look like a high school team. It was 48-20 with just under 7 minutes left in the third, so Todd Bowles wanted to break 60 badly, almost too badly. He lost track of his defense, but it didn’t matter much in the end, since Donte Moncrief absolutely Mossed Calvin Pryor, in order to pull in a 26 yard touchdown from Luck, making it 48-27, which would hold until the end of the quarter.

I forget which long Devin Smith TD this is, but both of them looked just like this, with Smith roaming free down the sideline, without a single Colt in sight.

Woah.... That was an impressive catch by Donte Moncrief, getting WAY above Calvin Pryor to bring it in.

The Jets proceeded to embark on their longest drive of the day, culminating with Amaro’s 5 yard TD that gave Geno his sixth TD pass on the day, all without throwing a single INT. The teams traded field goals after that, so it was 58-30 at the two minute warning. The Colts were driving once again, and Luck made it a little more interesting by finding Hilton for another TD, this one from just a yard out. After Zach Kerr bull rushed, getting to Geno before he could even hand it off to Gurley to run the clock out, Geno fumbled, since the ball was already transitioning from Smith to Gurley, and Kerr picked it up and ran it back 17 yards to pad the stats, and make it look like the Colts were competitive in this game, even though they weren’t.

                              Jets Gameday Preview: Week 14

The Jets are heading to California for the first time all season, and they hope to feel some California Love in the state of the art Levi's Stadium, home of last year's Super Bowl.

Everyone in the NFL has 4 games left, or one quarter of their season. If you told me back in September that the San Francisco 49ers would be leading the NFC West, instead of everybody's Super Bowl pick, Arizona, Seattle, and a Rams team with a bunch of motivation after moving to LA, I would have laughed at you and then given you the name and address of the nearest mental institution.

You see, way back in September, even before that, if you just looked at this roster, you would have noticed a distinct lack of talent, especially on the offensive side of the football. When you look the stats, this theory has held up. San Francisco possesses the NFL's absolute worst defense, in terms of total yards, and yards through the air. I guess that's what happens when your starting quarterback is Blaine Gabbert. There's no denying that he just doesn't have the skill set to be an NFL starting quarterback, and he's had trouble all year connecting with his average to mediocre receivers, which include Torrey Smith, Quinton Patton, and Bruce Ellington. The almost exclusive source of yards and scoring has been Carlos Hyde, who has got to be the team MVP after carrying them on his back to this point in the season.

It still baffles me how this team is 7-5. We've already discussed how bad their offense is, so you would think that they must have a world class defense, right? Nope. The Niners defense is a Chip Kelly defense, meaning that it can't possibly be anything to write home about. Statwise, they come into this game in the bottom third of the league in every major defensive category. Furthermore, they've been horrendous at home, 2-4 thus far, albeit one of those wins coming against the 9-3 New Orleans Saints. So, for a Jets team that hasn't lost a road game since September (and hasn't even played a road game in over a month), playing with a top tier defense and an offense that dropped 58 on the Colts last Monday, this could potentially be the game that gets them in the position the want to be in going into their final playoff push. Even though they don't have Gronk, and won't have him until the Divisional Round if they get that far, their offense comes in feeling pretty good about themselves.

                                Gameday Recap: Jets 43, 49ers 24
Jets pull away after strong second half

You can just barely see Brandon Marshall running free, past Tramaine Brock, and you can just see the ball being released by Geno. In a driving rainstorm, Geno threw a dart to Marshall, who ran the rest of the way, but then dropped the two point play that would have tied the game at 17.

The score of this game implies that the Jets enforced their will, putting up another big day on offense, and shutting San Francisco. But, that really wasn't the case. Yes, the offense was fantastic for the second time in six days, we can at least admit that. The reigning AFC Offensive Player of the Week led a balanced offensive attack, refusing to throw an interception for the second straight game, and not coughing the ball up for the first time in a game all year. He also got some protection, only getting sacked twice, another low on the season. The Jets defense played great, if you ignore the 4 big plays that led to points. But, we can't ignore those big plays, and the run defense certainly needs to improve if the Jets are going to make a serious playoff run here in the final three games of the season.

San Francisco took the ball first and gave it to Carlos Hyde. In the cold water, he was their lifeline tonight. On the first drive, however, the Jets kept him in check, caused the drive to stall just past midfield, and allowed Bradley Pinion to shank a punt, giving the Jets decent field position, which only improved after Todd Gurley's first carry of the day went for 25 yards. Geno methodically led the Jets down the field, and on 3rd and goal from the 1, called an audible at the line, taking the ball out of Gurley's hands, instead running a play fake to find a wide open Tommy Bohanon in the flat, as he got clobbered by Arik Armstead. But, like he has all season long, Nick Folk missed a kick in the wind and driving rain, so it was 6-0, and that was when the Niners got their big plays.

Carlos Hyde put them on the board, and in the lead, on the first 3rd down of the next drive, jogging untouched for 74 yards. A couple plays after Folk clanked a 43 yard field goal off the upright, Blaine Gabbert went untouched for 47 yards on a read option, also on 3rd down. Now it was 14-6, and Todd Bowles hadn't gotten a chance to blink since his team's initial scoring drive.

I didn't know Gabbert was capable of making good decisions on the read option, or on any play. This particular good decision, and a lack of Jets tackling, led to a touchdown.

The Jets got on the board again with under 3 minutes to play with a made field goal from Folk (for once), thinking they would get their chance in the second half, since they would be getting the ball first. But, Carlos Hyde got loose again, taking it into field goal range almost immediately, and giving the Niners over 200 rushing yards in the first half, a mark that hadn't been reached against the Jets since the week 2 blowout in Buffalo. Phil Dawson's chip shot made it 17-9 with 58 seconds left in the half, but the Jets wouldn't stay down for long. On the first play after the kickoff, B-Marsh beat Tramaine Brock off the line of scrimmage, and Geno threw a dart for a 74 yard catch and run, making it 17-15. Bowles decided to go for two, and got it to Marshall again, but he dropped it after taking a couple steps and a hit, almost enough to be a fumble rather than an incompletion, although it wouldn't have mattered too much. The Jets took the momentum into the locker room, and then ran with it.

In Sam Freday's world, there is nothing better than an 8 minute TD drive to open up the game, or the second half. Leading the Jets down the field his way, Geno Smith looked like a very good NFL quarterback, and not the guy he had seemed like for most of the season, until last week. On third and goal from the six, instead of forcing it into Devin Smith on the slant, he took it himself right up the hole in the A gap, waltzing into the end zone, and putting the Jets back in front 22-17. The Jets defense rose the momentum of their offense and finally got a stop. The Jets opened the fourth quarter with another long drive, ending in another hookup between Geno and B-Marsh, an 11 yard pass on third down after a sack, in which Marshall got into the end zone by putting a nasty stiff arm on Eric Reid. With just about 7 minutes left in the game, the Jets had a two score lead, so things looked good.

First, Geno finds a rift in the Niners coverage inside the 10, which is hard to do, unless you're really bad, like the Niners. I don't know how many times I can stress that I don't understand how this team is leading the NFC West.

Then, on the next drive, Marshall's nasty stiff arm puts the game out of reach with 7 minutes left to play.

After trading punts, the Niners took over at their own 5, looking to do something miraculous in the last three minutes. Blaine Gabbert, proving why he commands the league's worst offense, threw it away twice before throwing it to Quinton Patton, in one-on-one coverage with Revis. It was a jump ball, the kind of play Revis almost never screws up. He made the play once again, the game was brought to the two minute warning as soon as he hit the ground, at the San Francisco 35 yard line. The Jets were certainly trying to run the clock and put the game away, but when the red sea parts in front of Todd Gurley, how could you resist? The young stud took it to the house en route to totalling over 200 yards himself, surpassing the 200 yards San Fran put together as a team. Gabbert wasn't done, though. He hadn't really thrown the ball all day, but once the turnovers began, the floodgates opened. Marcus Gilchrist stepped in front of an out route, and brought it back 15 yards or so to around the 20. Once again, the Jets figured that if the 49ers couldn't be bothered to stop the run, then why not just take it to the house? They couldn't possibly mind that much, right? T-Gurls officially got over 200 yards while giving the Jets a 43-17 lead. Gabbert added a garbage time TD pass to Carlos Hyde that only happened because Revis literally froze in place, but that only matters if you were rooting for the Jets to hold SF to under 100 passing yard like I was, an accomplishment that would have been achieved if Revis didn't glitch out.

Before he froze in time, Revis went up, told Quinton Patton he was a sorry receiver (a la Richard Sherman), then took the ball right out of his hands, ending the 49ers' hopes for a comeback.

8-5, with three games to go, yet we don't even control our own destiny. We're just sitting here hoping the Titans or Chargers lose at any given time.
