        Jets Gameday Preview: Week 4

        Hopefully the return home will do good things for the Jets offense, which has been horrible this year.

        Okay. Something has to happen. Fitzy has to stop the madness now, not in 2 months, not tomorrow, but right this instant. He's been the conductor of the turnover train. It's like the Jets are allergic to holding onto the ball, which is a huge problem that wasted Forte's 150 rushing yards last week. How could they only score 3 points in that game against the Chiefs? Really? How is that even possible? What sucks even more is that the defense actually played well, and for the most part, shut down the run. But it didn't mean anything, because this offense is absolutely pathetic.

        Don't be fooled by the record. The Seahawks may be 0-3, Beast Mode might have retired, but this is the same team that went to 2 straight Super Bowls, and made it to the Divisional Round last year after going much of the season without Lynch. Russell Wilson is still leading this team with his deadliness as a passer, and occasional explosiveness as a runner. The reason he's so deadly in the air? He's got one of the best tight ends in the NFL in Jimmy Graham, and a solid #1 wide out in Doug Baldwin. Lynch's loss does leave a big hole in the running game, but the Seahawks are filling it with the fountain of youth. They have the team of C.J. Prosise, Thomas Rawls and Christine Michael to fill the Beast's hole, although the latter is hurt, and will not play in this game.

        The defense is virtually the same as that dominant, overpowering unit that has taken the league by storm over the last 3-4 seasons. It's base remains Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril, the two phenomenal pass rushers, with Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright patrolling the middle. The bread and butter of this defense, though, is the secondary. You can't play the Seahawks without being cognizant of ball hawker Richard Sherman, one of the few men in the league (along with Revis), who opposing offenses devise specific game plans to stay away from. The problem is, when you stay away from Sherman, the rest of the secondary is just as good. The safety combination of Earl Thomas III and Kam Chancellor is just as good, although the Jets will catch a break today with the injury to Thomas. And then, on the other side, is Jeremy Lane is pretty darn good in his own right. I think it's fair to say that this is not the team you want to face when your offense can't buy points, and has been turning the ball over left and right.

          Gameday Recap: Jets 17, Seahawks 13
          Geno Smith carries the Jets to victory after Fitzpatrick is benched

          Geno came in like a wrecking ball, hooking up with Zach Sudfeld to cap off his very first drive of the season, and put the Jets on the board. Here he his celebrating that play, with Sudfeld (44) visible in the background.

          Well, it's a win. It certainly wasn't very pretty, because Ryan Fitzpatrick was so atrocious in the first half that he was benched by Todd Bowles, in favor of Geno Smith to start the second half, and we know how bad Geno's reputation is, so Fitzy must have been really, really bad. And he was, turning the ball over 3 times in the first half. It was as if he was waiting for the Jets to gain a head of steam to turn the ball over and ruin the drive. The Jets had to rely on him too, because Matt Forte couldn't get anything going against that Seahawks treacherous front seven. And even though the Seahawks went right down the field and scored on the first possession, it was only 10-0 at the half. The Jets were actually getting a decent amount of pressure on Russell Wilson, the first time all year that they've really been able to do that. Leonard Williams was breaking through blocks all day, and enforcing his will in the backfield. The Seahawks ground game was even worse. Thomas Rawls couldn't find any holes, and even though C.J. Prosise found some success on the occasional toss or screen pass, the Jets locked up Seattle's offense for the majority of the day. Seattle did find the endzone late in the 2nd after another one of Fitzpatrick's turnovers to make it 10-0 at the half, but it was easily the best defense the Jets have played all year, and the kind of defense that won 10 games a year ago. But the offense had to get going.

          So out went Fitz, and in came Geno. The offense flipped 180 degrees. On that first drive, Geno was unstoppable. Matt Forte became his favorite target, connecting on a bunch of dump offs and screen passes that ended up going for huge gains. But it didn't come with a little bit of luck. Inside the 25, Smith was looking for Marshall over the middle, and it was picked off y Boby Wagner, who took it to the house. 16-0 Seattle with a flag, presumably on the Jets for something stpid, because that's just how things had gone. But no. Not this time. It was holding, yes, but on Richard Sherman on Eric Decker, before the Jets had thrown the interception!!!!! 1st down Jets!

          On 3rd and goal from 8 after hat, Chan Gailey called a play action bootleg, and had Smith rolling out looking for Jace Amaro. He was covered by K.J. Wright, so Geno found a wide pen Zach Sudfeld for a touchdown instead, the perfect time for his first catch of the season. So it was 10-7, and the crowd was back in it, causing the Seahawks to punt just shy of midfield after David Harris came up with a clutch sack on third down. The Jets were feeling good, so Geno decided to take a deep shot. He had Marshall one on one with Jeremy Lane running down the field on a streak. However, he overthrew it just a little bit and Lane came up with the interception. There were no flags to save the Jets this time. The 3rd quarter turned to the 4th as the Seahawks moved the ball down the field, eventually getting into field goal position. Russell Wilson kept buying time and completing short little passes in the flat. That kind of play is hard to stop, no matter how well your defense is playing. But finally, the Seahawks saw their drive stall out in the red zone, and Steven Hauschka made it 13-7 with 10:34 to play.

          Plenty of time, right? Right. The Jets did their thing by slowly moving the ball dwn the field. Fullback Tommy Bohanon found some success running the ball, so Smith kept handing it off to him on 3rd (and 4th) and short. They took almost 6 minuted getting the ball into scoring distance, until Kenbrell Thompkins came up just short on a 3rd down reception. Todd Bowles really, really wanted to go for it, with 5 minutes left, but decided against it, sending Folk out for a 34 yard field goal to make it 13-10.

          So now the Jets needed to continue stopping the run more than ever. And just when they needed to stop the run the most, the Jets didn’t. Thomas Rawls broke off a 50 yard dash when the Jets were run blitzing. But thankfully, the Jets didn’t lose faith in themselves. On thevery next play, the Jets attacked Rawls at the line of scrimmage. It was Marcus Gilchrist on the hit, and the ball slipped out. FUMBLE!!!!! Sheldon Richardson dove for it, but Gilchrist picked it up with his right hand, while his left hand was still on Rawls, preventing him from getting to it. The Jets were back in business, at their own 30, with just under 4 minutes to play. And on the first play after the fumble, the crowd got even crazier. You see, Smith found Forte on a screen pass, and the right side of the offensive line finally did their job blocking, and Forte was gone. Well, not all the way, just down inside the 30 for a gain of 55. You could feel the momentum shift after that fumble, and then the catch and run by Forte, and it all was topped off 2 plays later, when Geno found Brandon Marshall wide open for a 15 yard touchdown pass. 17-13 New York! Fireman Ed led the crowd in one of the loudest J-E-T-S chants ever, and the sirens that play whenever the Jets score were absolutely deafening.

          But there was still 2:30 to play. The Jets had to stop the Seahawks one last time; the passing game this time instead of the run. And they did. Russell Wilson was in all out mode, throwing it deep every time. On third down, Wilson did find Doug Baldwin, but the looming presence of Calvin Pryor III scared him off, and Baldwin dropped the ball. With 3 timeouts left, and 1:45 to play, the Seahawks punted, since they knew that the Jets couldn’t run the ball. They couldn’t, and on 3rd and 2, they were faced with one last big decision. Call a pass, or hand it off the fullback Bohanon again? Bowles picked the latter, and Bohanon got the first down, putting the game on ice. Something tells me we won’t be seeing much of Fitzpatrick anymore...

          Pete Carroll (background, in pink) watches Marcus Gilchrist rip the ball away from Thomas Rawls, the undoubted turning point of the game.

          Jeremy Lane can't get to Brandon Marshall, who jogged in to put the Jets ahead 17-13.

            Something tells me we have a bit of a QB controversy here.....all I can say is if you choose Geno it's not a matter of if but when he'll be benched for his inconsistent play lol.

            Speaking of which, what are your plans for Petty/Hackenberg?

              Looks like the right move to move on from Fitzpatrick. Geno Smith has always been an intriguing prospect and I think offers you more at this point, plus if he can avoid the turnovers that Fitzpatrick seemed to suffer from....

              Do you think you will be looking for other quarterback prospects this offseason?

                First of all, I believe I cut Petty in the preseason, but I'm too lazy to check.

                Funny you should say that about Geno... I did something pretty interesting on Saturday after I played this game. Get ready for the post that will break the Internet...

                I think I will be. As I said, I cut Petty, so I have 3 on the roster right now (until my next post that is). I have nothing against Hackenberg, but he needs developing. I've always found myself to be successful with a mobile quarterback, whether it be Manziel in M15, Teddy in M16, or Geno now (potentially), but if there's a stud in the draft, I might take him to see how it goes, but as you will see shortly, I'm running kinda low on draft picks, so I could be stuck with Geno, Fitz, or Hackenberg, depending on how things play out.

                  Jets Break the Internet; Trade for Gurley and Gronkowski

                  October 4, 2016 --- We all love you, Sam Freday, but this time, I think you've officially lost your mind. In a move that gave ESPN a heart attack, caused Twitter to crash, and new Fox Sports analyst Shannon Sharpe to go on an expletive filled rampage on the air, the Jets made two absolutely mind blowing trades. On Sunday night, after his team WON, Freday, who as you know is the special assistant to Owner Woody Johnson, but has control of day to day football operations, could not sleep. Why? Because he knew his offense was struggling, and that he had a QB controversy on his hands, after Ryan Fitzpatrick was benched at halftime of that day's 17-13 win over Seattle in favor of Geno Smith, the much belittled backup. Smith was the star of the show, and almost single-handedly won the ballgame for the Jets. We don't know if Freday was even sober, because he called up Los Angeles Rams Owner Stan Kroenke at 2:00 AM and started talking to him about his players.

                  He wanted an immediate boost to his offense, because the incapacity of his offense was getting tiresome. Then he thought specifically about Todd Gurley, the heart and soul of the young Rams team. At first, Kroenke flat out refused to do anything with LA's favorite son. But then, Freday put Ryan Fitzpatrick on the market, a capable back up and veteran presence to help Rams rookie QB Jared Goff, who has already been tearing ti up despite his team's poor start to the season. Kroenke was interested, but still wanted more, so Freday turned to his draft picks. His first choice, the Jets' 2018 1st Round pick, still wasn't enough for Kroenke, so Freday decided to throw the kitchen sink at him over the phone. The Jets' President of Football Operations offered the 2017 1st Round pick as well as the 2018 1st Round pick, in addition to Fitzpatrick, all in exchange for Todd Gurley. Kroenke put him on hold to talk to his trusted advisors. 20 minutes later, he came back on the line and accepted the deal.

                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                  Freday hung up and was overjoyed, but wasn't done. He had just committed to Geno Smith as his starting QB for the rest of the season, so he felt like he needed a weapon for Smith to throw to, along with Brandon Marshall. You see, the way the Jets' offense is set up, there's a huge emphasis on the tight end, slot receivers, and Brandon Marshall. So why not get an upgrade at tight end? I mean, Jace Amaro's been good and all, but is the Greek god of drops. So, looking for an upgrade for Amaro, Freday immediately started at the top, with the league's best tight end. He made another seemingly drunken phone call, this one to Patriots Owner Robert Kraft, his team's bitter enemy, and cut right to the chase.
                  "Hey, Mr. Kraft. I hate to bother you at this ungodly hour, but I'm in a trading mindset. I know you need a wide receiver since [Danny] Amendola and [Julian] Edelman are hurt, so how about I send you Eric Decker for Gronk?"
                  "Mr. Freday, have you down right lost your mind?" Replied Kraft, and hung up the phone.
                  But, he called right back, before Freday could even comprehend what just happened.
                  "Mr. Freday, you're right. We do need a wide receiver, and we like Decker a lot. He fits our prototypical Patriots wide out: On the smaller side, incredibly fast and dynamic. I think Tom [Brady] will love throwing to him. However, we also need a pass rusher. How about you send Sheldon Richardson over to us, plus your best available draft pick so [Roger] Goodell doesn't think I'm 'confused' again?"
                  Freday mulled it over in his bed before responding.
                  "...Fine. You win. The Patriots always win. It's a deal. You can have Richardson and Decker. I hope you use Decker well. My offensive playbook just doesn't have a ton of plays for him, so I feel bad that he hasn't gotten a lot of looks. But, know this: When y'all come to our house on Thanksgiving, it'll be Gronk feasting on your pathetic secondary, not Richardson feasting on Geno."
                  With that, Freday hung up and went to bed, grinning ear to ear and laughing like a mad scientist.
                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

                  So, what does this mean for Forte? Well, he's older, as you know. He will serve as the 3rd down back, and the primary pass catcher out of the backfield. Gurley is here to run the ball, but for all we know, he might catch 2 or 3 passes per game. As aforementioned, the playbook really wasn't designed for Decker. Devin Smith and Kenbrell Thompkins have really been thriving in the slot receiver role, and there are a lot of plays in this playbook for tight ends, and the WR1 position (Gronk and Marshall), so the offense should perform much better, assuming Geno doesn't turn the ball over like a banshee.

                  And what does this mean for the D-Line? Well, Wilkerson will still be doing his thing on one side, with Leonard Williams switching from DT to DE, his natural position, patrolling the other side of the line. A big emphasis is now place on the DTs in this 4-3 set up, Steve McLendon and Deon Simon. They must shed their blocks quickly to have any chance of keeping this defense playing at the same high rate it has played at in the last two weeks.

                  Welcome to the crazy mind of Sam Freday, and the crazy world of the NFL that allows him to exist...

                      You know... I would say the deals are unrealistic but... giving up 2 1st Round picks for a running back in todays NFL is damn near absurd and well worth the price given up. Ask the Vikings for AP, they'd do it. Ask the Cowboys for Elliott, they'd do it. The Gronkowski trade in the division would make ZERO sense... except for the fact it's freaking New England. Belilchick could trade Brady to Buffalo in real life and people would think the Patriots robbed them. The one exception is that Gronk is 27... if this was down 2-3 years later, I could 100% see it happening. But let's assume Gronk's had a little injury concerns and it makes perfect sense.

                      Even though it's the filthy Jets... I gotta hand it to you.

                        I thought I gave away too much for Gurley, and too little for Gronk. I never thought they would give away Gronk. I was as shocked as you are when the trade went through. Oh well. In Madden 15, I gave up a rookie WR in year 3 of my Browns dynasty and a 1st round pick in exchange for OBJ. I didn't think that would go through either, but it did, so like I said then, I'll take it.

                            I see Freday doesn't feel like drafting the next few years, and you now have the 3G's with Geno, Gurley, and Gronk lol. However this trade will be considered a dud if the Jets can't make it to the Super Bowl in the next 3-4 years.

                            Also not sure about the decision to commit to Geno, I just don't think he can take you to the promised land.
