Cincinnati Bengals fire HC Marvin Lewis after 14 seasons, 0 playoff wins

      One Final Author's Note:
So, this is new territory for me. This is the first time since chronicling Madden dynasties on OS that I have failed to make the playoffs, so I'm not sure what to do. I decided to keep Todd Bowles, since it clearly wasn't his fault that we lost our last two games. We need a QB, and a couple of wide receivers. Playing in the New York Metropolitan Area, we have plenty of funds available to use during free agency, since we sent most of our early draft picks to New England and Los Angeles.

In the coming posts, I'll summarize the rest of the postseason, and then get right into the offseason. I look forward to making amends in 2017 with what should be a new look Jets team. Muhammad Wilkerson has declined initial offers and will test free agency, and most likely leave.

Phillip Rivers must have had an amazing season, which is kinda suprising.

Jets Hot Stove: Brandon Marshall To Retire

February 15, 2017--- In a move that shocked the entire NFL world, especially the New York Jets organization, Jets WR Brandon Marshall announced that he is retiring amid health concerns. For years, Marshall has gathered venerability around the league for his openness about his mental health issues, specifically his struggles with bipolar disorder. His ability to manage it and still perform well on the field is what made him great. His announcement is especially bittersweet for the Jets because it means that he finishes a great career without ever playing in the postseason. The Jets, of course, have blown any chance at the playoffs each of the last two years by losing to the Bills in their final game. When Marshall called up Jets President of Day-to-Day Operations Sam Freday, he told him the truth. Freday asked if there was anything he could say to change his mind, but Marshall simply said that he couldn't continue to play in good conscience knowing that his mental health was threatening to make him a bad teammate. He didn't want to do that to the organization he had grown to love in the last two years since coming over in a trade from Chicago. On a lesser note, this creates another gaping hole in the Jets' roster, at WR. The plan was for the Jets to sign a quarterback or even a wide receiver in free agency, but with only $1 million in cap space available, that doesn't seem realistic. Now, they will have to turn to the draft, in which their highest pick is in Round 3.*

            * This will change in a moment, if you keep reading...

            Other Jets Offseason News:

DE Muhammad Wilkerson was given the franchise tag to avoid free agency, after declining team's initial offer

Jets sign free agent WR Vincent Jackson to a 2 year, $13.6 million deal

So, where did we get all that money???

            Spoiler

The New York Jets are officially ON THE CLOCK!!!!

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)

                2017 NFL Draft Preview:

                Top 10 Overall Prospects:
                1. WR Treveon Griffen, LSU
                2. QB Brody Barth, Texas A&M
                3. DT Gerard Robinson, Texas A&M
                4. LT Pete Forbes, Notre Dame
                5. LT Dmitrius Winston, Ole Miss
                6. HB Lincoln Barden, Oregon
                7. SS Watts Colvin, Penn State
                8. OLB J.T. Mumphrey, Texas A&M
                9. OLB Anthony Marino, UCLA
                10. WR Kasheem Ragland, Nebraska

Mel Kiper Jr.'s Jets' Team Needs:
                1. Quarterback - Geno Smith was almost the exclusive reason why the Jets lost their last two games and missed out on the playoffs. Look for Sam Freday to be aggressive, and take Barth at #1.

                2. Outside Linebacker - Although this is a position that the Jets thrived at last year with rookies Darron Lee and Jordan Jenkins, they don't have any depth behind them. With two solid OLBs in the top 10, this depth issue could be addressed.

                3. Cornerback - Trading Revis to the Bucs for the #1 pick was what made this position a team need. You have to think the Jets won't be content relying on Buster Skrine, Dee Milliner, and Marcus Williams. But, with the first CB lower on the board, we might not see them take one at #1 or #6.

                4. Wide Receiver - Even before Brandon Marshall unexpectedly retired, he was the only reliable wide out on this team. Yes, they have Gronk, and that alone might be enough. The recent acquisition of Vincent Jackson helped a little bit, but unless the younger wideouts like Devin Smith, Quincy Enunwa, and Jeremy Ross can develop, it might be wise to take somebody like Griffen at #1, or Ragland at #6.

                5. Right Tackle - The Jets have a solid offensive line, but at right tackle, they lack depth. Breno Giacomini is on an island out there, and it is a good idea to get him some help. The problem is, the Jets might not have enough picks in this draft to do so.

                1st Round Pick Order:
                1. Jets
                2. Browns
                3. Dolphins

                  Jets Draft Picks
                  1. CB Jawaun Waller, Miami

Despite coming in at #12 overall, Adam Schefter believed that Waller was the best athlete in this year's class. He broke the school record for interceptions in a season at The U with 10 this past year in his senior season. Named the ACC defensive player of the year for the third year in a row, Waller finished #3 in the Heisman voting, with 3 pick sixes, a kick return TD, a punt return TD and even a receiving touchdown. The exclamation point of his college career came in the Pinstripe Bowl victory against Minnesota when he dove to break up a play, but knocked it up in the air for a teammate, who took it to the house after Waller laid a huge block on Gophers QB Mitch Leidner. The #1 CB prospect is expected to be a menace in the Jets' secondary, and will most likely be the #1 corner on the roster. He might be the best CB to come into the league since Richard Sherman.

                  6. WR Dareon Warfield, Oklahoma

The tall, strong muscular phenom blossomed into Sooners QB Baker Mayfield's favorite target. The two connected over 70 times this season, with Warfield averaging 22.4 yards per reception, with Warfield winning the Biletnikoff Award for the nation's best receiver, and was an integral part of Oklahoma's trips to the College Football Playoff in consecutive years. Todd McShay loves Warfield's potential a ton, yet still sees room to develop and hone in his professionalism. With the pass catching ability of Odell Beckham, Jr., and the work ethic of Amari Cooper, the Jets expect Warfield to be a solid WR2, and learn through the teachings of veteran WR Vincent Jackson.

                  180. RT Carlos Jeter, Kansas State

The best way to describe Jeter is as a stud. The late 4th round or early 5th round talent was taken by the Jets in the middle of the 6th round as a huge steal. His college coach at KSU, Bill Snyder, remarked on his maturity and humility, both of which he thought were "out of this world" for a young man his age with the athletic ability and passion for the game that he possesses. A 6'5" 320 behemoth from just south of Chicago, Jeter was originally drawn to Kansas State because of how they earned respect and venerability the right way, and held onto the ideal that team is indeed family. Sam Freday loves his attitude, and he will certainly love learning from Nick Mangold and Ryan Clady on the Jets offensive line even though he will likely start his career as a backup RT, behind Breno Giacomini, unless he impresses the coaching staff through his performance in training camp and preseason games.

                  212. QB Ronald Dennis, Arizona

This mobile quarterback ran a very dynamic offense at Arizona for 2 years as a starter, but it is the kind of offense that doesn't always translate well to the NFL. He is a very raw talent, but still deserves a chance to prove himself in the NFL, at least according to Sam Freday and the Jets' front office. Specifically, his mid range and deep passing game are very mediocre, and in the second half of his senior season in Tucson, he started to be plagued by turnovers in the key moments of games. Nevertheless, the Jets decided to give him a chance, and even though he is a long shot to make the 53 man roster, he, like anybody else, will still try to earn his way onto the roster.

2017 New York Jets Season Preview:

For five consecutive years, our hearts have been broken by Rex Ryan. There were the last 3, majorly disappointing, years of his time as Jets' coach, and then the first two years of his tenure as Bills' head coach, when he came back to nip us in the buds in week 17, sinking our playoff ship before it could even launch. If we could have beaten the Bills even once in either of these last two seasons, we would have been playoff bound. No more. That's our motto this season. We have plenty of new faces, with an experienced New York quarterback. We have two fantastic rookies, the best tight end in football, the swaggest running back in football, and one of the best defensive front sevens in football. As long as we get our jobs done for Coach Bowles, General Manager Maccagnan, and Owner Freday, we won't have to worry about our past demons. Get your business done, gentlemen. Our city is urging us on; don't let them down.

                          Jets Gameday Preview: Week 1

The weather is perfect in East Rutherford today, as the Jets try to look past their collapses of the last two years, and make big strides in 2017.

A new season of NFL football is upon us, a season that couldn't come soon enough after the collapse against the Bills in this very building more than 9 months ago. The Jets and their fans left disappointed and heartbroken, knowing they had squandered their playoff chances against their former coach Rex Ryan for the second year in a row since they had fired him. But today is a fresh start, and Jets Nation is optimistic, with a new, fresh-looking roster. Unfortunately, gone are Brandon Marshall, Darrelle Revis, and Calvin Pryor III. But, here are Vincent Jackson, 1st overall pick Jawaun Waller, and 7th overall pick Dareon Warfield. They don't know the pain, and don't have any demons lurking over their heads. That just might be the difference.

This is a very good test for all parties involved. The new look Jets offense is expected to be very dynamic and explosive if Geno Smith can hold onto the football. In case you've forgotten, Rob Gronkowski is the captain of this offense, while Todd Gurley II is the first mate. Add in those new faces, Jackson and Warfield, and you've got a nice looking group. They are going up against an Atlanta defense that has been notoriously poor over the last 4 seasons. The Falcons are coming off a 6-10 season in which their defense let them down on countless occasions. But, over the summer, they added a bunch of youth in the form of high draft picks that now give them some promise. Up front, Adrian Clayborn has been joined by a plethora of rookies: Andrew Sanford at the other end, and Delray Weathers and Gerard Robinson up the middle. Brooks Reed is a new Falcon at linebacker, but will split time with Courtney Upshaw. The dynamic Vic Beasley, Jr. compliments them on the other side, while Deion Jones is the middle man. Keanu Neal and Desmond Trufant are still the anchor of not only the secondary, but the entire defensive unit. They have gotten some help, in the form of Jalen Collins and Kendrick Lewis, so that they do not have to be solely relied upon any longer.

This game is also a test for the Jets defense, one that started slow last year, but really turned it up. What better way to find out if Jawaun Waller is in fact the next Darrelle Revis than to match him up against Julio Jones? This Atlanta offense has always been strong, and multi-faceted. Quarterback Matt Ryan leads this two-headed attack, with a myriad of above average pass catchers, starting with the aforementioned Jones, and including Mohamed Sanu, Sr., as well as the newcomers, ex-Patriot Chris Hogan, and ex-Cardinal Jaron Brown. Or, the Falcons can just beat you on the ground with Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Both have the potential to give the Jets fits. The Jets are usually good at stopping the run, but when they struggle, it tends to be against speed backs that make you miss. Remember when they gave up over 200 yards in one half to LeSean McCoy in week 2 last year? Yeah. Exactly

Gameday Recap: Falcons 30, Jets 20
Falcons overpower Jets, pull away late

Chris Hogan beats the soft zone coverage of Marcus Williams (20) to haul in what proved to be the game-winning score.

Unlike most of the Jets losses that Geno Smith has been apart of, we can't blame this one on turnovers. Yes, the Jets did commit three of them, but one was in garbage time, and the other two were what Sam Freday likes to call “cheese.” First, there was the fumble that resulted when Geno was attempting to throw, and got hit right as he released it. And then, there was the ball that Geno threw right off the helmet of Atlanta rookie DT Delray Weathers, forcing the ball to go 30 feet in the air, coming down in Keanu Neal’s eagerly awaiting hands. And while these turnovers resulted in 10 points for the Falcons, their margin of victory, it seems like the Jets had control of the game, and that the turnovers weren’t the reason they lost this game. That leads us to the question: If turnovers weren’t the reason, then what was the reason for the loss in this season opener? Well, the Jets were just outplayed. Atlanta’s offense was just too good. The Jets got pressure on Matt Ryan, but he just made bigger plays when he needed to. The Jets’ run defense was back in its 2016 form, shutting down Devonta Freeman until the last moments of the 4th quarter. There’s nothing to be ashamed of when you play to your capability, but simply aren’t the best team on the field. We’ll take this one. It’s not the end of the world.

One thing that was concerning was the injury to Gronk, right after his very first reception of 2017, after sitting out the preseason as a precaution. He was hit hard by Keanu Neal, and ended up with a torn shoulder. Luckily, he won’t miss extended time, and will be back next week in Miami. Jace Amaro filled in nicely, hauling in a touchdown pass, just a few plays later, to knot the score at 7 late in the first. A long, methodical drive by the Falcons, one of many on the day, ended with a stop by the Jets defense in field goal range, something they always do well, but the aforementioned “cheesy” interception by Neal gave the Falcons the ball back when the Jets had worked it into field goal range. The Falcons got a first down, and then were stopped right around midfield with enough time for the Jets to score before the half, and score again to start the second half. But, Atlanta faked a punt, and handed it to their Pro Bowl fullback Patrick DiMarco, who threw a pass to the wide open rookie DeMarco Neal, a defensive back playing in punt coverage, for a gain of 23. Two plays later, Julio Jones got a step on Jawaun Waller, and made it to the 1 before the Jets rookie could recover. Freeman punched it in on 3rd and goal and it was 17-7 Atlanta. A chipshot field goal from Nick Folk kept the Jets in reach going into the break, down 17-10.

Keanu Neal prepares to pounce on this ball. All he had to do was to wait for it to come down, since there were no Jets players alert enough to play defense, or even try to catch it themselves.

We did see just how explosive the Jets offense can be, when all the right parts are in place and healthy. Todd Gurley had an effective day, but did not see his usual volume of carries in this one, and finished with under 100 rushing yards for the first time in recent memory. But, a lot of that was because the Jets discovered how good of a slot receiver Devin Smith is. After a 2016 season marred by drops as the Jets WR2, the addition of Dareon Warfield forced Smith inside, where his speed quickly became a weapon. On the third play of the second half, he caught a pass 10 yards from the line of scrimmage on a crossing route, and then ran the rest of the way to the house for a total of 74 yards, also tying the game at 17. After a series of punts by both teams, the Falcons slowly moved their way downfield, before the Jets tightened up on defense. A long field goal by Cairo Santos put ATL back in front 20-17 in the waning stages of the third quarter.

Devin Smith punctuates his long, game-tying TD catch and run by doing a somersault into the end zone.

The Jets embarked on a long drive of their own, but not without drama. They ended up tying the game on a 22 yard field goal from Nick Folk after Todd Bowles strongly considered going for it on 4th and goal from the 5, but that drive saw the Jets fumble the ball three different times, only to have offensive linemen fall on it. Geno was strip sacked for the billionth time in these last two seasons, then lost it trying to scramble. Gurley even got in on the action, coughing it up after taking a big hit from somebody on the Falcons, probably Vic Beasley, Jr. It worked out in the end. They did tie the game after all.

It was third and seven from the Jets’ 24. The crowd was into it, hoping for another bend but don’t break drive from their defense. The Jets were maintaining their defensive strategy of keeping everything in front, so they came out in press zone coverage, with corners Marcus Williams and Jawaun Waller lining up on the line of scrimmage. They had safety help, but it didn’t arrive in time. Chris Hogan got a beat on Williams, and before Marcus Gilchrist got there, trying to save the day, Hogan had crossed the plane of the end zone and put Atlanta ahead 26-20. The extra point, of course, made it 27-20. The Jets, of course, had to pick the perfect time for incompetence. On a 3rd down from their own territory, trying to rally, Geno picked up a blitz at the line, but kept the play action pass call, trusting either Devin Smith or Dareon Warfield to get open on a crossing route. Before he could finish the play fake, Smith was open, so RoundingThird began hitting the Y-button. But it was too early. Geno didn’t throw it, and just sat there like a lame duck, waiting for Adrian Clayborn to sack him from the blind side. The Jets had to punt, with 3 minutes to play and three timeouts, and couldn’t prevent the Falcons from scoring after Devonta Freeman finally broke free on the outside edge. A three and out from that spot was encouraging, but the Falcons were already in field goal range, and the leg of Cairo Santos put the game out of reach.

Like we said earlier, the Falcons were just the better team today, and the only thing we can do is practice hard this week to improve ourselves, so that we can overpower teams in the future. Knowing that turnovers didn’t cost the Jets this game is very reassuring, since the front office is taking a big risk by leaving the turnover prone Geno as the starting quarterback of this team, after electing not to draft a QB at either 1st round slot that the Jets had.

In garbage time, Geno decided to test his young rookie Dareon Warfield (89) in one-on-one coverage with Desmond Trufant, but he just overthrew the ball, allowing Trufant to make one heck of an interception.

Wow I'm shocked you didn't take a QB lol. When you said you were sticking with Geno I thought you were bluffing, especially when you made the move up to #1. But hey with all the weapons Geno has there's no reason he shouldn't succeed.

Tough loss to Atlanta week 1, hopefully you can bounce back and take care of business against Miami.
