2018 New York Jets Season Preview: "Light It Up"

Let's do this thing!!!! We're the champs, but that's not good enough, and you can't go around thinking that that is good enough. You see, now we're guaranteed to get everybody's best shot. They're out for blood; our blood. We ruined their preseason plans. Everybody wanted to take home that Lombardi Trophy, but only one team could, and it was us. So this year, you gotta go out there and defend your honor. Play like you'll never win it again, and good things just might happen. As hard you hit last year, hit 'em harder this year. As fast as you ran last year, run faster this year. As many points as you scored last year, score more this year. Day in, and day out, Light. It. Up.

    Meet the Cast:

Well, as usual, the defending champs begin their season on the season's first Thursday Night against a team they beat in last year's playoffs. The Jets will get a AFC Divisional Round rematch against the Steelers, a rematch of what was a very offensive affair. Following that, the Jets get 10 days to prepare for their first meeting of the year with Bill Belichick, but that's about all you can say about the Patriots nowadays, coming off missing the postseason in their first season without the G.O.A.T. After a road date in Houston, the Jets get to face Mariota's former team for the second year in a row, and get a good look at rookie QB Max Nowak, who is being heralded as the next Peyton Manning. A road trip follows, featuring a Sunday Night affair in Chicago, and a date with those pesky Dolphins in Miami. After the bye, the Jets gets the Pats again, by far the earliest they would have completed their season series. That game starts a three game home stand, also featuring Indy and round #2 with Miami. The Jets then hit the road for the holidays, with a potential trap game in Jacksonville before partaking in an NFL tradition, playing the Lions on Thanksgiving Day at 12:30. The long week should provide much needed rest for the Jets as they get ready to finish their season, coming home to face the Bills and the Packers, then going up to the Ralph to see Rex's Bills for a second time in three weeks, before coming home to host the Vikings two days before Christmas, then concluding the season with a rematch of last season's AFC Championship in Kansas City. All in all, a pretty solid schedule, but one thing jumps out. Only four Primetime games for the defending champs? #FireGoodell

Adam Shaheen Suspended for Season Opener

September 3, 2018 -- It's Labor Day, and it seems like Adam Shaheen celebrated the day meant to honor all the hard work that Americans put in. You see, he took the day off. He celebrated Labor Day in style, and in this case, that consisted of skipping practice, although in his mind, it wasn't skipping. He didn't think there was a practice to go to. That explains why he was so surprised when Coach Bowles called him up to tell him that he was going to be sitting out the season opener, just three days away, against the Pittsburgh Steelers. But, what might be the biggest punishment for Shaheen, other than not getting paid, and all the shame he carries with him now as a result, is that he won't even be allowed in the building on Thursday Night. You see, the Jets, being the defending Super Bowl Champs and all, will reveal and hoist their championship banner/plaque on the stadium facade, and then, following the tradition of every other Super Bowl winning team, will receive their championship rings on the field before the game. Shaheen will be stuck in his Upper East Side apartment watching the game on TV, and will not receive his ring until the team's next practice, which likely won't be until Monday, depending on the result of the game. Without Shaheen, who was only signed leading into week 17 last season, as an undrafted rookie free agent, had a phenomenal postseason all things considering, Rob Gronkowski will have to play a little more conservatively than normal, so that he does not risk getting hurt. If Gronk goes down, the Jets will be left with one tight end, Kellen Davis, and while this will only be for one game, the Jets utilize their tight ends about as much as anybody in the league.

          Jets Gameday Preview: Week 1

We're back! The Jets, and MetLife Stadium, have the illustrious honor of bringing football back, due to their status as defending champs.

It starts now. Yes, they'll be a bunch of pregame cermonies, the revealing of a banner, distribution of rings, and the illumination of the Empire State Building in Jets green, but after that, it's game time, and time to forget about last year's magic, focusing on the road ahead. That road begins with a matchup against a Steelers team that wants revenge. They were the last team to play a game here, a 44-38 loss in January in the AFC Divisional Playoff, a game in which they got off to a really hot start, before their defense let them down big time. But, hope springs eternal, as do the aspirations for this ball club that has made a name for itself for what it is capable of on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage. There may be a couple of new faces, and some youth, but this coaching staff is one of the longest tenured in the league, so they know what it takes to enforce their will. On offense, however, is the more interesting story line. The pride of Miami University, Ben Roethlisberger, dislocated his ankle in a meaningless preseason game, and will be forced to sit out much of September, leaving the ol' reliable (eh?) gunslinger Ryan Fitzpatrick to lead Mike Tomlin's star-studded offense, against his former team, in the same building where he won over the hearts of Jets fans in 2015, before sucking it up so much in 4 games in 2016, the team traded him to the Rams for Todd Gurley. Boy did that deal work out, for the Jets. You can expect the Jets fans to cheer Fitzpatrick extra loud for every interception he throws, as we all know he's bound to throw a couple, especially with the two new safeties that the Jets have, Calvin Pryor III and Jamal Adams. And with the new look of the Jets' front seven, featuring Elvis Dumervil and Jordan Jenkins to MLB to play between Darron Lee and David Harris, as well as the pro debut of Diamond Chamberlin, squeezed in between two of the best ends in the league, and Steve McLendon, coming off a career year. Fitzy will have his hands full, but as we said, the Steelers offense is loaded with playmakers.

Le'Veon Bell is still the focal point of this offense, able to run all over you, either on a direct handoff or catch and run. As long as Antonio Brown is in Black and Yellow, business will always be boomin' in the Steel City. But, it's not like AB is the only guy to throw to. Remember Martavis Bryant? He's been through a lot, had his fair share of struggles, but had a huge game in the playoff game last year, and hopes to turn that into a breakout 2018, his 5th season in the league. There's also John Ross, who might have had the best rookie year of all the wideouts in the class of 2017. And, of course, the big fella at tight end remains Ladarius Green, finally starting the season off healthy.

How 'bout that Steelers' D? The front line is virtually the same. Cam Heyward on one side, Stephon Tuitt on the other, with Javon Hargrave in between. But this season, you can also add DTs Douglas Nkang, in his second year out of Auburn, and rookie Adrian McCarthy, from Idaho, to the picture. On the next level, the linebackers follow the theme of being familiar faces to the Jets. Bud Dupree, Ryan Shazier, and ex-Seahawk Kevin Pierre-Louis will do the majority of the linebacking for this team in 2018, assuming they all stay healthy, which has been no gimme in recent years, especially for Shazier. And finally, after an overhaul in the secondary over the summer, the Steelers place their trust in their now #1 corner Jourdan Lewis, beginning his second year out of Michigan. The Steelers, however, are very impressed with their first round draft pick, safety Jemeryn Wooten, but don't quite feel that he is ready to take over the position from veteran Mike Mitchell. On a special teams note, Steven Hauschka left the sweet gig he had in Seattle, the reigning NFC Champs, and decided to come to the team attempts more unnecessary two point conversions than any team in the history of the league.

Gameday Recap: Steelers 20, Jets 17
Fitzy and the Steelers ruin the Jets' after party

Kevin Pierre-Louis steps in front of Marcus Mariota's screen pass to Todd Gurley and completely shifts the course of the game, giving Pittsburgh the lead, and the momentum, they would never relinquish.

Was it the dreaded Super Bowl hangover, or just rust? Whatever it was, the Jets offense looked just a little bit out of sync. Don't blame the defense for anything, they did their part, except for letting the Ryan Fitzpatrick led Steelers completely own time of possession. The Jets moved the ball, but the Steelers shut down Todd Gurley and the Jets running game. Because the Jets are so dependent on the run, they struggled when Coach Bowles was forced to abandon the run. It wasn't Mariota's fault. He ended up with 3 INTs, but two came in desperation mode. All in all, he had one bad throw, the pick six, and a lot of good throws that just couldn't be hauled in, due to the stingy Steelers defense. They had good coverage and great pressure. That, my friends, is a deadly combination.

The Jets kicked off to start the ball game, hoping to ride the crowd's raucousness from the Ring Ceremony to their advantage on defense. And, yeah, one might say that it worked. The very first play of this NFL Regular Season was Le'Veon Bell running into a truck named Muhammad Wilkerson for a loss of two. The Jets lived in the backfield in that first drive, attacking their former quarterback for three sacks. But, Fitz-magic found a way to complete 4 straight third downs, and the Steelers found themselves in the red zone, having eaten up over half of the first quarter. But, finally, Fitzpatrick got greedy. Martavis Bryant was in one-on-one coverage with Marcus Williams, a match up favoring Bryant, but Williams played it beautifully, stepping right in front of it on the goal line, and taking it back to the 25. The Jets were in business for their first offensive possession of the year.

Mar-Will gives the Jets their first red zone stand of the year, and proving to everybody on national TV why in fact the Jets traded Fitzy for Gurley.

Like we said, the Jets still moved the ball, at times. Their first drive was a real good one. Gurley got stuffed, but a big catch and run from Mike Williams over the middle got the Jets near midfield just like that. But the Steelers bore down, and the Jets ran out of gas just inside of Nick Folk's field goal range as the 1st quarter expired. It was actually good that time ran out, because the Jets were going straight into the wind, so Folk's kick might not have gotten there. But, they switched sides, and Folk came out and nailed one right down the middle with 5-10 yards to spare. It was 3-0 Champs. The Steelers put together another long drive, establishing their dominance in terms of time of possession, and after Jamal Adams made a couple of fantastic open field tackles, he made his first, and only mistake of the day, letting John Ross run right past him in the end zone. Fitzy threw a strike into a tight window to put Pittsburgh up 7-3. The Jets countered with another drive that fizzled out in field goal range, but caused their first punt with enough time to regain the lead before halftime.

Just a look at the window Fitzy had to get it through to find John Ross for the score.

The trouble was, Mariota was having problems finding holes in the Pittsburgh coverage. So, trying to make a play to get the Jets into the red zone, he scrambled out right, and had some running room. He dove head first for a first down just across midfield, but fumbled. Oh, how we've missed that... Javon Hargrave picked it up, and the turnover bug was back for 2018. Fitzy threw a quick dump off to Bell, then handed it off to him on second down, where he was met in stride by Diamond Chamberlin, looking for his first solo tackle in the NFL. He whiffed, and Bell got past him, getting into Jets territory before Jamal Adams did his thing. 1 strip tackle later, the ball was on the ground, and Steve McLendon was the lucky guy in the right place and the right time. A nice little 20 yard hookup between Mariota and Gronk set up a loooong Folk field goal as time expired, and the Jets headed into the locker room in a pretty good place all things considered, up 9-7 and set to get the ball to start the second half.

Welcome to New York, Jamal Adams. He forces a much needed fumble, the only mistake made by Le'Veon Bell on this night, and set up the Jets final field goal of the first half.

Oh, but that third quarter. The run game continued to be stagnant, aside from a couple of third down conversions. The Jets had virtually abandoned the run by now, so Mariota and friends were trying to spur movement any way they could. They had tried running screen passes earlier in the game, but the one time Mariota could connect with Gurley, he was literally swallowed up whole by Cam Heyward for a loss of 11. This time, though just outside of field goal range, although let's face it, the Jets weren't going to be content with just a field goal, they ran it again, and Gurley got out to his spot quickly, and had three fifths of his offensive line waiting to block for him. The problem was, the Steelers were in man coverage, and Kevin Pierre-Louis had Gurley. In he came out of nowhere, sniped it, and took it back all the way to give the Steelers the lead 14-9, completely sucking the momentum out of the Jets.

KPL finishes the job for Pittsburgh. Credit Mariota though for catching up to him and not giving up after throwing the pick.

How did the Jets respond? Last year, they would've marched right down the field and gotten their feet back under them, but on this night, Mariota threw three straight incompletions, and Lachlan Edwards came onto punt. Thankfully, the Jets defense kept with their 2017 theme and kept the Jets in the game, causing the Steelers to give the ball right back. But, we were early in the 4th quarter now, the Jets were getting antsy, so MarMar started forcing things. His second pick of the day led to a Steelers field goal, but hey, it was still a one possession game at 17-9. The Jets actually put together a nice drive, getting down to a point where they were knocking on the door of the red zone with about 5 minutes to play, a touchdown and conversion away from tying it. But, Devin Smith and his drops ruined the day. He let one slip through his hands, and it was picked off by Philip Gaines who proceeded to return it all the way back to a point where the Steelers were ALREADY in field goal range. To make matters worse, Bell made a couple of Jets miss, getting well over 100 rushing yards, on his way down to the 2. Coach Bowles' frustration was the only thing that prevented a score, as he told the defense what they needed to hear. They stuffed him from there, and were forced to settle for a Hauschka field goal. But, it was enough to make it a two score game at 20-9, and we had just hit the two minute warning, so the Jets were down to their last whiff of life.

You know how every time the Jets have a big lead, have been playing great defense all day, until the game is out of hand, when the opposition proceeds to get a meaningless touchdown? Today, that was the Jets? They put together what was easily their best drive of the day, using spikes to stop the clock instead of burning timeouts, just in case they got the ball back. They wouldn't, so it didn't matter, but Mariota hit Mike Williams from 5 yards out, then Gurley on a check down for the two. It was 20-17, and enough time for some magic, assuming the Jets could snag the onside kick. But, Josh Huff fell on it, and the game was over. The Steelers had ruined the Jets' last big Super Bowl party. Onto New England, and I sure as hell don't want to start 0-2.

Somehow I don't think I've commented here since you restarted this. Anyways..

Tough loss to start the year, but it's nice that your games are competitive. Fitzpatrick must have had some extra anger after the trade out a couple seasons back.

Lastly, I assume you're editing some of the rookies to be real guys? Obviously John Ross came out this year and Adam Shaheen as well.. I might have missed you mentioning that a while back but I'm curious as to if you were doing that for all teams or just a few assorted guys.

I do all this talk about Jamal Adams, and you don't even notice that he's one of these rookies? Come on... But yeah, about 7 weeks into last season, I replaced the 2017 draft class with their real life counter parts. Understandably, I don't feel like doing that with the 2018 class, since it took me like 4 days and the new game drops in 3 weeks.

Some of the guys changed teams in the offseason, but here is the full list of players that I put in the game: http://forums.operationsports.com/fo...&postcount=192

Wow, it seems like even just one more solid drive from the offense and you guys could have taken over. They just didn't have it in them.

Thanks for checking in, my man!

Yeah, like I said in the game recap, the offense just looked a little rusty. I don't know if it was just the Steelers playing good defense, or if our well-oiled machine was just a little rusty. Either way, I'm very nervous about this next game in Foxboro. I always struggled against the Patriots, especially in Foxboro. Their QB, Brad Kaaya put up two great games against us last year, and it took a miraculous comeback to beat them at Gillette last year. I don't want to start 0-2, because, well, who does? But, we did start 0-2 last year and ended up winning the Super Bowl, so I guess it's not the end of the world after all.

And you should always be nervous about coming to Foxboro! Sadly though I think you'll come out angry and emerge with a hard-fought W. An 0-2 start certainly will not help Coach Bowles in the eyes of the ownership, so you'll find a way to avoid that.

Yeah it's fun to see how many guys actually ended up with those teams IRL, like Obi Melifonwu with the Raiders. I put a lot of work into that, and credit NewscasterNews4 for the idea and the help.

You have more confidence than me. I reread my game recap from the amazing game I won there last year, and it's wild. Bill Belichick, without a HOF QB for once, signed a running back hours before the game to throw me off. It was then-rookie Matt Dayes, and he broke 100 on us. I want to win, but I wouldn't mind starting 0-2. Since we did it last year, I know I can get out of that hole. But, starting 0-2 would also help me transition into my Madden 18 'chise using that storyline I told you about...

                              Jets Gameday Preview: Week 2

Gillette Stadium, in all of its beauty. It's funny how good it looks before you take the field.

Last time we were here, the amazing happened. Feel free to reminisce: http://forums.operationsports.com/fo...&postcount=221

This is as crucial a game as you can have in September. The Jets, even though they won the Super Bowl last year after starting 0-2, do not want to go down that path again. But, here they came into Foxboro, against one of the few teams that's given them headaches. And, even though this is far from the team that won Super Bowl LI, they still have one of their GOATs. Coach Bill knows how to beat the Jets. Hell, last time we met, he signed a running back on Sunday night, before a Monday game in order to screw up the Jets plans, and that running back, Matt Dayes, ended up running for over 100 yards on the Jets. And, even though the Patriots are far different without Tommy Terrific, this is still a matchup of the last two Super Bowl Champions.

So, who's the new head man in New England? Brad Kaaya, but we've been over this. In the aforementioned classic game that occurred here last time, Kaaya killed the Jets with his play action audibles on third down. But, in the second half, the Jets finally realized what he was doing, stopped it, and won the game as a result. Will he stick to that mindset, using his legs to make plays, or will he show off the offseason development of his arm? The problem is, much of his supporting cast, on both sides of the ball, are finding themselves in a nursing home. Not that there is ever a good time to play the Patriots in Foxboro, but this might be it. Take a look at this injury report. No Amendola, Edelman, or Dion Lewis on offense; and no Malcolm Butler or Cyrus Jones on defense. This begs the question: Who is suiting up for the Patriots? Well, the run game will be carried by newcomer Jonathan Stewart, unless Belichick signs another running back the night before. Stewart will get help from former Navy QB Keenan Reynolds if he needs it, but at the moment, these two are the only two active HBs on the roster. So, there's no Edelman, and no Amendola. Who the heck can Kaaya throw to? Well, the Pats still have ol' reliable Eric Decker, sent over from the Jets in that trade for Gronk. He's got his tight end, Martellus Bennett, and we know how Belichick likes to use his tight ends. But, the Pats remain very short-handed on offense. Other than Decker, the only WRs on the team are rookie 1st round pick DeMarcus Ellerbe and Zay Jones. The Patriots are going to have to use their resources wisely, but we all know how well they can do that.

That defense, the pride of Belichick and Matt Patricia, is still in pretty good shape, though, despite of course, Butler and Jones being out in the secondary. This is a team that held Houston to 9 points last week, the same Houston team expected to win the AFC South this year. Up front, there's the other product of the Gronk trade, Sheldon Richardson, the two breakout stars (for the Patriots) of 2017, Terrance Knighton and Malcom Brown. Don't forget Jabaal Sheard on the other side. Why did the Browns ever get rid of him? Nothing is new among the Patriots linebackers. Dont'a Hightower still causes more problems on the field than off it, which is really saying something. Reuben Foster had a great rookie year learning under Jamie Collins, that is, when Collins actually showed up to practice. And then there's everybody's favorite Patriot, Shea McClellin. But then, this secondary is obviously looking a little different for the time being, until Butler and Jones return. Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung are the omnipresent faces back there. In fact, I don't think I ever remember a time when either one of them was hurt. But, at the corner position, everything's a scramble right now. Logan Ryan, Marquez White, and Jalen Myrick are trying to fill the shoes of the Super Bowl XLIX hero, and the young stud from Bama.

Very different looking Pats team. Youth movement is in full effect when we take into account the abnormally high number of injured guys already.

Should be a good game. I'll still take the Jets close against my good will but .. we shall see.

FWIW Gillette always looks good to me .. but then again...
