Game 6, Year 2 Preview (2028 season): #6 LSU Tigers at #4 Florida Gators

    GAME 6 PREVIEW

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

    ....................5 1/2....................

2027: Then-true freshman PK Ross Bryant, who was facing some early-season criticism for several missed tries to start his career, came through with the game-deciding 27-yard walk-off field goal that gave LSU a monumental upset over #7 Florida last year at rain-soaked Tiger Stadium.

Last Meeting: Playing in a rainstorm, despite trailing by 9 with under four minutes remaining, LSU rallied late to score a monumental 29-28 upset win over then-#7 Florida last season in Baton Rouge. QB Rob Mason's 13-yard touchdown pass to TE Lucas Rodgers cut the Tigers' deficit to 28-26 with 2:27 to go. Then, following a big defensive stop by his defense, Mason led LSU into position for then-freshman PK Ross Bryant to kick a 27-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Tigers a huge win that improved their record to 3-2. Mason finished the contest with 278 passing yards along with a career-best 162 rushing yards.

The Gators are a personal-nemesis of sorts for second year Tigers head coach D. Geezy - two years ago, his Tulane squad lost to Florida in the 2026 SEC Championship Game 31-24, a loss that media sources have indicated played a virtually direct role in his departure from the university at the conclusion of that season.

Going to the Swamp won't be easy to go into and get the win. I love how that rivalry has evolved in real life. Their point differentials have been better than yours, but you've been playing way better teams. Look out for their running back. Weird how low his YPC is. Looking forward to the matchup!

Finally a tough matchup on paper! They may not have many fast guys but they do where they need it - that secondary has some speed! Looks like Austin and Robinson have been making Parks look good this season. Their tackles on the O-Line look a little weak, hopefully Manning, McNeal, or Kerr has a field day.

Sheesh this looks like the Florida teams of old during the Percy Harvin days. Lots and lots of speed and athletes all across the field. Austin looks like an absolute stud on paper and that secondary is deadly. This is a game where controlling the tempo is going to be key. If you get caught playing catch up and having to pass a lot against that secondary I would be worried.

If you can control the clock and do some ground and pound, I love your chances for the upset. Really excited for this one my friend!

Yes this is LSU's annual crossover rival; we play them every year despite being in separate divisions. In fact, going back to my time at Tulane, this will be my sixth straight year facing Florida, dating all the way back to the 2023 SEC Championship Game they beat my Green Wave in 36-17 on their way to winning a national title. As always, their team is scary good on paper and will present quite a few challenges for us.

I am very glad this is the last year I will have to face RB Kevin Austin. He's made some plays against me over the years, and that 98 speed of his is very intimidating. That said, even after he graduates, we then will have to contend with their backup freshman RB Kelly Cronin, who checks in at 6-4 231 pounds and has a 90 TRK rating!

By the way...4.8 ypc is definitely not low at all!

Agree with you on QB Zac Parks. He isn't great by any stretch, but that 13 to none TD:INT ratio is very impressive. We'll have to do an excellent job of keeping their guys in front of us, or else it could be a long day.

I also agree with you in that pressure will be key. It's a fine line we'll have to tow though. We can't bring pressure TOO often, or else they can make us pay over-the-top.

I am still waiting for freshman LB Derek Kerr to have his coming out party. He's been way quieter than expected. He was the #1 player on my recruiting board all of last season, but he has been a bit of a bust up to this point.

Cheese you and I think a lot alike. Over the past couple of weeks, anytime I did put some thought into how I wanted to attack this game, I keep coming to the conclusion that ball control will be key. We really need a big day from Scottie Rodgers, and maybe even another big day on the ground from Rob Mason like the one he had in last year's game versus the Gators. Rodgers struggled against them on the ground last year as a freshman, gaining only 65 yards on 20 carries, but hopefully he can turn that around in this sudden Heisman-contending season he's having.

That secondary of theirs may be the best one I have seen in years, particularly in regards to speed, so we can't afford to test them too often downfield. I'm hoping we can isolate their dime DB Wesley Allen on an island for a big play or two, but in all, we'll need huge days from our running backs out of the backfield, and TE Lucas Rodgers also needs to show up big for us down the seam like he had in last year's contest (7 rec, 88 yds,1 td). In all, we really just need our best players to all show up for this one.

I too am very excited about this matchup. One of the things I like to do is go back and read the game stories of some of the previous contests I have had versus my upcoming opponents just before playing them, and I didn't realize it until now just how much rich history I have versus the Gators. I have been playing against this same basic core personnel group of theirs each of the past few seasons now and most of them are seniors this year, so I am really looking forward to this final battle versus the likes of RB Kevin Austin, LB Jamie Jenkins, and CB Colt Byrd, amongst many others. Also, as noted in the preview, these guys basically cost me my job at Tulane, so I still have that bone to pick with them.

Thanks everyone as always for the pregame talk! Time to kick this one off in just a few minutes...Geaux Tigers!

I just mean that 4.8 isn't especially high in college. I think of 5.0 in college the way I think of 4.0 in the pros. Plus he has 98 speed and he's been playing slouches. Considering all those factors, I'd expect higher ypc. But I hope he doesn't get it against y'all. Looking forward to the result!

Game 6, Year 2 (2028 season): #6 LSU Tigers at #4 Florida Gators

                  #6 35 -- 5-1 (2-1)
                  #4 48 -- 6-0 (4-0)

LSU QB Rob Mason could do nothing but watch in bewilderment after throwing pick-sixes on back-to-back plays to start what was without a doubt the most disastrous fourth quarter of his career.

Senior QB Rob Mason throws a whopping five interceptions in the game's final quarter, including three returned for touchdowns, as #6 LSU falls to #4 Florida in soul-crushing fashion 48-35 at the Swamp | Facing a 35-14 fourth quarter deficit, Mason's turnover woes too much to overcome despite Tigers' late rally attempt | RB Kevin Austin goes off for 251 all-purpose yards and 3 scores while helping the Gators erase an early 14-0 deficit | Tigers hope to right the ship next week when they face South Carolina in what will be the second of three straight road contests

Gainsville, FL -- Up 14-0 and in firm control of the game, possessing the ball with under three minutes to play in the second quarter, #6 LSU seemed well on its way to picking up a sixth straight win to open the 2028 season. However, a fumble late in the first half was just the first of many mistakes by QB Rob Mason which eventually led to the wheels coming off for the Tigers in a disappointing 48-35 loss to #4 Florida at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Mason accounted for 7 turnovers during the game, including a stunning 5 interceptions in the fourth quarter alone, and the LSU defense could not find a way to stop Gators RB Kevin Austin for most of the afternoon, as Florida amassed a 35-14 fourth quarter lead before what was a wild finish at The Swamp.

With his team up 14-0 late in the second quarter, QB Rob Mason was stripped of the football on this sack by DE Kevin Sherman. The turnover would later result in a Florida touchdown that started a scoring avalanche of 35 straight points by the Gators.

LSU SS Dominique Woods' interception on the game's very first offensive series set up a 12-play 80-yard drive which ended with a 4-yard touchdown run by RB Scottie Rodgers to put the Tigers up 7-0. And later, another Woods interception, this one in the end zone with the Gators driving, set up a second Rodgers touchdown, this one coming on a 10-play 80-yard march that resulted in a 14-0 lead for the visitors. Rodgers finished the game with 146 yards from scrimmage and 3 touchdowns on the day. Unfortunately for he and his team though, that second rushing touchdown of his would be the last time his squad would dent the scoreboard for quite awhile, and the Tigers' downfall got started with a mistake by their offense.

Gators DE Kevin Sherman's second quarter strip-sack of Mason would result in a fumble recovery by freshman OLB Aaron Beach that set their team up in business deep in Tigers territory. Florida quickly cashed in the turnover for a touchdown when Austin caught a wheel route pass from QB Zac Parks for a 9-yard score that cut their deficit to 14-7. Austin, who out-raced Tigers sophomore MLB J.J. Brooks on his first score, was just getting started.

The senior speedster, who possesses 4.2 speed, would score yet another touchdown on a pass pattern out of the backfield early in the third quarter, this time turning on the jets and burning LSU FS Mario Reed for a 32-yard touchdown that tied the game up at 14-14.

And finally, Austin's 43-yard touchdown on a fourth and 3 attempt late in the third quarter would give the Gators their first lead of the game at 21-14. Austin finished the contest with 140 rushing yards and the touchdown, to go along with 3 receptions for 44 yards and his 2 earlier scores.

Florida RB Kevin Austin showed off his blazing 4.2 speed throughout Saturday's contest, burning the Tigers defense for three touchdowns on the afternoon.
"We came into today really wanting to pay close attention to #1 (Austin), and we just had no answers for him," said LSU defensive coordinator Charles Kelly. "He's only 5-feet six-inches and doesn't weigh a whole lot, but his speed more than makes up for his lack of size. Thankfully he's a senior and will be gone after this season, because he's a headache to gameplan for and it is extremely hard to simulate in practice what he brings to the table. You can clearly tell that isolating him one-on-one with some of our defenders was a point of emphasis for them today, and unfortunately it worked. It was like we were chasing a jack-rabbit with a hammer today."

With the Gators now up by a touchdown heading into the fourth quarter, that's when things got very wacky, setting up for one of the wildest fourth quarters in recent memory for Tigers and Gators fans alike, a fourth quarter which featured a whopping 48 combined points.

Mason's interceptions thrown to Florida senior star CB Colt Byrd and junior CB Mark Arnold on back-to-back offensive plays to start the quarter quickly extended the Gators lead to 35-14 just seconds into the final period and were just a pair of a devastating five interceptions thrown by Mason during the game's last quarter. But before the last three interceptions occurred, Mason went on a tear to make a game out of it.

Following the two pick-sixes, the senior quarterback from Gretna, Louisiana led three consecutive scoring drives to get the Tigers back into the contest, throwing a 17-yard touchdown toss to WR Glen Walker with 7:24 remaining, scoring on a 9-yard touchdown run himself with 5:21 to go, and, following a Gators field goal that increased LSU's deficit to 38-28, Mason's sensational 50-yard touchdown pass to Rodgers with 2:01 pulled his team to within a 38-35 deficit.

After failing to secure the onside kick attempt following Rodgers' last touchdown, Reed got payback for his earlier miscue when he came through with a clutch play by stripping Austin of the football after the senior back had completed what could have been an almost-game-clinching first down run, and Tigers freshman DE Derek Holley recovered it at the 4-yard line, giving his team's offense the ball back down by three with 1:43 remaining, but backed up at their own goal line. And that's when disaster began to strike again for Mason.

Gators senior CB Colt Byrd caught two interceptions in the fourth quarter, including one returned for a touchdown.

With an opportunity to put his earlier interceptions returned for touchdowns behind him, Mason made one more catastrophic error when, in the face of heavy pressure from Sherman, he threw a pass into the flat towards TE Lucas Rodgers; Gators senior star LB Jamie Jenkins would step in front of the pass unfortunately, and returned it 1-yard for a touchdown, making the score 45-35, virtually putting the game away. Mason would go on to throw another pair of interceptions in the quarter on desperation attempts, including another by Byrd, putting a large stain on what had been a solid day for the signal-caller before the fourth quarter began.

"The defense certainly gave us opportunities, particularly near the end with the forced fumble," said LSU head coach D. Geezy. "I know Rob is very hurt right now and that this one is going to sting for a long time.

"I think I read a stat the other day that said something to the effect of, 'teams that get two pick-sixes in a game win something like 94% of the time.' I'm sure that same stat for three pick-sixes is something near 98 or 99%. That can't happen, and we'll have to get much better and quick."

LSU (5-1) will travel to face South Carolina (3-3) in Columbia next Saturday night. The Tigers defeated the Gamecocks 19-14 last season in Baton Rouge, overcoming a 14-6 halftime deficit via a pair of touchdown runs by Mason, a player they will need to pick up the pieces following his nightmare performance in Gainsville.

"We have a lot of season left to play and Rob knows that," said Geezy. "He is going to lock himself into the film room and put in extra work at practice this week to fix what happened here. And it wasn't all on him; we faced a ton of pressure up-front which led to the turnovers, including a couple of times where he was hit as he threw, not to mention the difficult time we had running today; so we have a lot to clean up as an entire offensive unit if we want to get where we're trying to go.

"When you really study the standings and the history of this conference, you realize that virtually every game from here on out is an SEC elimination game, so we need to get ourselves right here in a hurry."

                  Game Footage

LSU and Florida traded body-blows throughout a roller-coaster ride fourth quarter which saw nearly 50 combined points put up on the board between the two teams, but unfortunately for the Tigers, most of the Gators' share of the points came directly off of Mason's turnovers.

Florida fans did the Gator Chomp as their team got set to take the field for a huge SEC contest versus #6 LSU.

Albert E. Gator helped get the crowd hyped up during the pregame.

#4 Florida takes the field in sunny Gainsville.

Following SS Dominique Woods' interception on the Gators' opening series, LSU RB Scottie Rodgers cashed it in for a 4-yard touchdown which gave the Tigers a 7-0 first quarter lead.

Florida QB Zac Parks long heave to the end zone was thrown into double coverage and Woods came down with his second interception of the game. Like he did following Woods' first interception earlier, Rodgers would later cash it in for a touchdown once again, increasing LSU's lead to 14-0.

DE Kevin Sherman wreaked havoc on LSU's offensive line, coming through with a pair of sacks on Saturday, including a sack-fumble.

Despite throwing a pair of interceptions, Parks had a solid day, finishing 18 of 31 for 219 yards and 2 touchdowns.

LSU defenders saw the back of RB Kevin Austin's jersey often throughout Saturday's contest, including on this 32-yard touchdown reception in which he burned FS Mario Reed (#18 above) in one-on-one coverage to tie the game up at 14-14 in the second quarter.

Moved up the depth chart following a possible season-ending injury sustained by #3 WR Brady Carter Jr. last week, senior WR Chase Doyle was a more than adequate replacement and ended his first game of extended action this season with 5 receptions for 91 yards, including catching several passes for clutch first downs.

Mason's shocking fourth quarter of disaster began on the period's very first play when he was hit by CB Mark Arnold while attempting a pass and Florida star CB Colt Byrd intercepted the errant throw and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown which extended the Gators' lead to 28-14. Arnold would also get a pick-six on the Tigers' very next offensive play from scrimmage which pushed the score to 35-14.

Down by 21 and with his team attempting to mount a comeback, WR Glen Walker came through with this beautiful one-handed 17-yard touchdown grab.

Rodgers was somehow able to catch this pass despite SS Eric Henderson's attempt to bat the ball down, taking it in for a 50-yard touchdown which cut his team's deficit to 38-35 with 2:01 remaining.

Desperate for a big play with Florida trying to run out the clock late, LSU SS Mario Reed was able to strip Austin of the football and freshman DE Derek Holley recovered, giving LSU the ball back down by three with under two minutes to go.

Following the Austin fumble, Mason's turnover problem that started the fourth quarter reared its head again, as LB Jamie Jenkins stepped in front of TE Lucas Rodgers for an interception that only needed to be returned 1-yard for a back-breaking touchdown that made the score 45-35 with 1:35 remaining.

Florida players rushed the field following the game's conclusion, as their team's record improved to 6-0 at the midway, keeping them in position to possibly capture the school's first national title since 2023.

Despite the late fumble, Austin captured Player of the Game honors following his huge performance both as a runner and pass receiver out of the backfield.

Also, as noted in the preview, these guys basically cost me my job at Tulane, so I still have that bone to pick with them.

Wow, did I jinx myself with this sentence or what? I basically named the three players that directly killed me the most!

There are a few teams over the course of the years following Geezy that really stick out as thorns in your side...Arkansas...Southern Miss...South Carolina...and ultimately Florida. The Gators have really been assembling some fantastic squads these past few seasons and their speed has just been deadly.

Austin was everything he was advertised to be and more. Almost reminded me of watching Deuce Monroe running around out there. "Chasing a jack rabbit with a hammer..." I laughed out loud at that. So spot on and yet comical all at once. Got to love Coach Kelly.

Just a devastating fourth quarter. Florida had you playing their game and essentially eliminated your ground game. Last thing we wanted was to get caught in a spread 'em shootout with a team built for speed like that.

It's a painful loss but I believe Geezy will have the team bouncing back. With a schedule like this there is no time to mope and hopefully Mason will realize that as well.

Hang in there my friend. Loving this as always.

Wow, tough break! But the good thing is that Rob has more than enough time to redeem himself. Who knows, this could set up one heck of a rematch if you both make it to the Conference Championship! But first things first, time to make your opponents pay for that loss!

If you lose a game by two scores and you throw five picks, that's a game you should have won, Mr. Mason! Gotta protect that ball.

Good luck next week, Coach Geezy. Long season still. Don't let your boys get too low.

You said it yourself that we could not afford to get ourselves into a shootout against the Gators, and once we got behind and had to start throwing, that's when things fell apart. Their secondary speed was as good as advertised, and when going back and looking at the fourth quarter footage, you can clearly see that Mason just did not have guys getting open often enough.

You're right, like a few other teams have, Florida has been an absolute thorn in my side...I am glad they're going to be losing so many of those playmakers that have killed me year after year.

Great comp between Austin and Deuce. They're essentially the same player, even sharing the exact same mugshot.

I still feel good about the team, but at this point, every SEC contest is an elimination game, because even if we knock off Bama later in the year, they're not likely to lose to anyone else.

I knew you'd appreciate that quote from Charles Kelly.

It would be incredible if Rob ends up getting another crack at the Gators. I'm pretty confident that they're going to win the East, and looking at their schedule, they may even be playing for a national title game berth by then.

As you said though, first things first, and the only thing we can worry about right now is figuring out how to beat the Gamecocks.

No doubt about it, the turnovers were the ultimate difference in the game. I have never seen a quarter as bad as that one, and, without looking, I doubt you'll find very many if any quarterbacks in college football history that have thrown five picks in one quarter.

It still says a lot though that despite everything, we had the ball with a couple of minutes remaining down by three, which is really amazing in itself and shows just how good this team can be.

We still have a long way to go, and as OBinKC alludes to, we may get another shot at them if we handle our business.

Thanks for checking in as always fellas!
