Game 7, Year 2 Preview (2028 season): #12 LSU Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks

    GAME 7 PREVIEW

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

    ....................8 1/2....................

2027: Then-sophomore nickel CB Jerome Harmon came away with this interception near the goal line with 0:52 remaining to put a bow on LSU's win versus South Carolina last season at Tiger Stadium.

Last Meeting: In a very low scoring defensive affair, LSU made just enough plays down the stretch to come away with a 19-14 victory over South Carolina last season in Baton Rouge. Down 14-6 at halftime, then-junior QB Rob Mason rushed for two second half touchdowns, including the game-winning 18-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. Late in the game's final period, with the Gamecocks driving, nickel CB Jerome Harmon's leaping redzone interception with 0:52 to go sealed the Tigers' victory, improving their record to 2-2 on the year.

Not sure what's going on with Photobucket's pic sizes lately, so please excuse some of the distortions. Hopefully they get it fixed soon.

      Anyway, time to play ball!

Good luck against South Carolina! Not overly impressed with the roster and your defense should eat that quarterback for lunch. Don't let Jones get rolling and just force McIntyre to pass. You got this!

Man I went into this game really hoping to ignite the pass rush some. Not a single player on my team has more than 1 sack this season. For whatever reason, this has been the toughest year for me in getting sacks, and even after this past game's 2 sack effort, we are dead-last in the nation with just 6 quarterback takedowns through 7 games. I've never had this much trouble before.

As always, I appreciate your input old friend. In this instance, you were prophetic as far as forcing McIntyre to pass. It wasn't pretty for them!

Sorry for the delay in posting this game result all...been a crazy busy at work and at the Geezy household!

Game 7, Year 2 (2028 season): #12 LSU Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks

            #12 52 -- 6-1 (3-1)
            N/R 10 -- 3-4 (2-3)

QB Rob Mason absolutely went off Saturday night, redeeming himself from last week's turnover-filled performance to lead #12 LSU to a comfortable victory versus out-classed South Carolina.

One week after his nightmare performance at the Swamp, senior QB Rob Mason turns in a valiant performance as #12 LSU crushes South Carolina 52-10 at Columbia | Senior signal caller accounts for 363 total yards and 6 touchdowns to help Tigers get back on track following last week's fourth quarter meltdown | Nickel CB Jerome Harmon shines once again as Bayou Bengals' defense gets its groove back after getting torched by Florida | With one more game to go before critical bout with Bama, Tigers must not look past 5-2 Auburn, now led by former LSU O.C. Anthony High

Columbia, SC -- With one SEC loss already on the ledger, #12 LSU came into this weekend's contest versus South Carolina with the mindset that each game on the remainder of its conference schedule is an elimination game following last weekend's 48-35 thumping at the hands of Florida. With strong bounce-back performances by both its defense as well as QB Rob Mason, the Tigers responded well to the challenge, destroying the Gamecocks 52-10 Saturday night at Columbia. Mason, who threw an astonishing 5 interceptions during the fourth quarter of last week's loss to the Gators, finished this weekend's contest with the Gamecocks with 363 combined passing and rushing yards to go along with 6 total touchdowns, as the Tigers overwhelmed South Carolina from the very start of the contest until its conclusion.

Mason used his legs well versus South Carolina's defense, racking up 104 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground, his first 100-yard rushing game since game 5 of last season.

CB Jerome Harmon's interception on the Gamecocks' very first offensive series, something he did earlier this season in the team's 19-17 home win versus Georgia, set the tone for a terrific performance by the Tigers' 'D.' Harmon, a junior, is second in the nation with five interceptions this fall, and his turnover was cashed in for only a field goal, but it set the stage for the remainder of the game.

After the defense forced a quick three-and-out on Carolina's next possession, Mason led a drive that concluded with a touchdown pass to WR Chase Doyle to make the score 10-0. And, following a failed fake punt attempt by the Gamecocks, Mason's 3-yard touchdown hookup with redshirt freshman TE/FB Julius Broussard gave LSU a 17-0 lead in the first quarter.

And Mason was just getting started.

The Gretna, Louisiana native and former 4-star recruit's 25-yard touchdown run just before halftime pushed LSU's lead up to 24-3. And, to conclude an 11-play 88-yard drive to open up the third quarter, Mason's 16-yard touchdown run increased his team's lead to 31-3. Mason finished the game with a season-high 104 yards on the ground on 9 carries.

A 28-yard touchdown reception by RB Greg Hearn from Mason late in the third quarter was quickly followed up by 62-yard touchdown connection from Mason to TE Lucas Rodgers early in the fourth to help put the game away.

Mason finished the game 21 of 37 for 259 yards to go along with 4 touchdown passes.

Harmon's 91-yard interception return touchdown with 6:35 to go made the score 52-10, putting a bow on a strong outing by the Tigers.

LSU (6-1) will travel next week to face Auburn (5-2). Auburn, who lost to LSU 49-14 last year in Baton Rouge, is led by first year head coach Anthony High, who was LSU's offensive coordinator in 2027 before leaving the team this past off-season.

The stands at Williams-Brice Stadium began to clear very early after fans watched their over-matched Gamecocks get pummeled by a very hungry Tigers squad that was looking to bounce-back.

South Carolina rocked its "Wounded Warrior" uniform combination to honor the U.S. Military on Saturday, and like in 2011, the game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off with all proceeds to be donated to help injured war U.S. veterans.

For the second time in four weeks, nickel CB Jerome Harmon caught an interception on the game's very first series, setting the tone for the Tigers' defense.

Redshirt freshman TE Julius Broussard caught his first career touchdown that gave LSU a 17-0 first quarter lead and celebrated it with starting senior TE Lucas Rodgers.

Harmon's big game was not confined to just the two interceptions and his fourth quarter 91-yard interception return touchdown, but the third year player also came away with this sack early in the game.

LSU sophomore Ryan Carter, the team's #1 cornerback, celebrated this first half pass breakup that came in one-on-one coverage versus Gamecocks top WR Kris Williams, who was held without a single catch on the night

Tigers true freshman LB Derek Kerr, whose career is off to a very slow start despite much preseason hype, took down QB Robbie McIntyre on Saturday for his very first career sack.

Pic 1 of 2: Mason's 16-yard third quarter touchdown run was his second of the game and concluded an 11-play second half opening possession, giving the Tigers a commanding 31-3 lead.

Pic 2 of 2: After scoring, the senior Mason celebrated with fellow-senior, WR Joe Burnett. Mason finished the game with 104 rushing yards on 9 carries, his first 100-yard rushing game this season.

Keeping speedy South Carolina RB Mike Jones in check was a key point of emphasis for LSU heading into Saturday night, however SS Dominique Woods lost track of him in one-on-one coverage on this play and Jones turned this short pass in the flat into a 73-yard touchdown that cut the Gamecocks' deficit to 31-10. Jones finished the day with 4 receptions for 105 receiving yards to go along with his 70 yards on the ground.

Pic 1 of 2: Like Broussard did earlier in the game, LSU redshirt senior RB Greg Hearn and third down specialist is another player that got into the end zone for the first time in his career, catching a 28-yard touchdown pass from Mason to push his team's lead up to 38-10.

Pic 2 of 2: Following the hookup with Hearn, Mason was congratulated on the bench by members of the Tigers defense, including senior DE Matt Manning, following his third touchdown pass of the night and his fifth touchdown of the game overall.

LSU sophomore RB Scottie Rogers, who is in contention for the Heisman Trophy, did not get into the end zone for the first time this season, but did finish with 98 yards from scrimmage.

Pic 1 of 2: Senior TE Lucas Rodgers has been somewhat quiet this season despite LSU offensive coordinator Bryce Allen's desire to get him the ball, as he has just 19 receptions for 371 yards on the year, however he did get loose for this 62-yard fourth quarter touchdown that made the score 45-10.

Pic 2 of 2: Mason leaped into the air to celebrate following the sixth touchdown he accounted for on the night, as he finished the night with 259 passing yards and 4 passing touchdowns before being removed from the game with LSU up big early in the fourth quarter.

LSU junior nickel CB Jerome Harmon has been incredible thus far in 2028, routinely coming up with big interceptions, including this game-sealing fourth quarter pick-six. Harmon is currently now second in the nation with five interceptions after catching two on Saturday.

Nice win. You'd like to see Rodgers have a better game. The defense played well and so did Mason but LSU looks better when Rodgers is the bigger threat offensively. Auburn looks like they'll be playing fired up after the beating they took from Tulane. Florida and Alabama though, wow.

My man...great to hear from you.

As tempting as that Bama game is, I cannot overlook this dangerous Auburn team and their no huddle offense. They're not spectacular on paper, but we have certainly lost to worst teams during my career in this dynasty.

Most definitely. Unfortunately for the Gamecocks, they had to be the ones to feel the wrath following that last poor performance.

That's definitely the goal, but it is important we take things one game at a time. No lie, that Bama game is circled, but we must focus our energy on this next contest versus Auburn if we want that matchup against the Tide to mean anything.

Florida and Bama certainly look like the class of the SEC this season (per the usual as of late). The way things are taking shape, the SEC title game could very well end up being for a spot in the national title game.

You're very right about Rodgers. We gotta get him back involved in a big way versus Auburn; I really want to see this guy win a Heisman and become just the second Heisman winner I have had during this 19-year dynasty run!

2027: In last season's contest, then-true freshman CB Ryan Carter's second quarter 45-yard interception return touchdown was one of a whopping three defensive touchdowns scored by LSU.

Last Meeting: LSU scored early and often, going up 21-0 in the first half on its way to cruising to a 49-14 victory versus overmatched Auburn last season in Baton Rouge. In a game which featured a devastating three defensive return touchdowns by the Bayou Bengals' defense, Auburn just did not have the horses to keep up with their SEC West rivals.

Dating back to his time at Tulane, LSU second year head coach D. Geezy is a stunning 13-1 all-time versus Auburn. Auburn hopes that trend changes soon, with first year head coach Anthony High, a former Geezy protégé , now in charge.

No real speed at the skill positions and a QB that moves about as well as my 87 year old grandmother? I expect 5+ sacks and a bunch of forced turnovers in this one. Time for the boys to get after it.

I hope you're right...sacks really have not been our forte' this year. We have only six this year, good for last in the nation.

Their QB looks slow, but he should be a good player for them in a couple of years.

Trap game is right...we must bring our best this evening or else that Alabama game won't mean much of anything other than pride.

Thanks fellas...after a brief break in the action, it is finally time to play ball!
