Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez Takes Home Heisman in Quarterback Heavy Race

Screen Shot 2019-10-11 at 11.27.00 AM

For the first time since Eric Crouch back in 2001, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have themselves a Heisman trophy winner. Redshirt junior QB Taylor Martinez was voted as the winner of the 2012 Heisman beating out Utah QB Jordan Wynn by over 400 total votes. Martinez was dangerous both through the air and in the run game, as he totaled 42 total TD's, 30 through the air and 12 on the ground. Just last week he led his Nebraska team to an upset win over #1 Penn State in the Big 10 championship.

Last Season Heisman Winner: QB Case Keenum (Houston)

          Game Notes

Just over a year ago these two teams met in the Champ Sports Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Last season it was the #18 Scarlet Knights getting the best of the #14 Yellowjackets 30-20. This year on a much bigger stage, the Yellowjackets, led by 3rd place Heisman finisher QB Tevan Washington will be expecting a different outcome.

Georgia Tech is coming off an ACC Championship win over unranked Clemson, while Rutgers last time out was a 45-42 loss to conference rival West Virginia. Will a rivalry be started this season in the Orange Bowl? Or will Rutgers come out on top and make it two straight post-season wins vs the Yellowjackets?

For Rutgers it is the schools first ever BCS Bowl appearance coming off of the Big East title. With everyone watching, the Scarlet Knights want to send a warning to the ACC, as they'll be coming next year, and they want the top spot.

Dominant Defensive Performance Leads Rutgers to Orange Bowl Victory

            Screen Shot 2019-10-13 at 12.31.33 PM\

            Bowl Week
            January 3, 2013
            Miami, Florida

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights didn't let the rain ruin their celebrations, as they took home their biggest win in school history, a 17-7 win over #8 Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. The Rutgers defense was dominant against the triple-option allowing just 94 yards on the ground to one of the nations top rushing teams. Heisman candidate QB Tevan Washington was held to a season low 11 yards on 11 carries, as the Rutgers front seven was in the backfield all afternoon.

            Quarterbacks
Both quarterbacks held their own in the sloppy, rainy conditions in Miami. Chas Dodd would find more success, solely based on time of possession, in this defensive battle. Dodd would throw for 264 yards a score and an interception. His toss on a 3rd down to Miles Shuler from 11 yards out gave Rutgers a 7-0 lead.

Two big pass plays to Jawan Jamison would set up Rutgers for a score in the 3rd quarter, helping push the lead to 14-7.

Georgia Tech QB Tevan Washington who finished 3rd in the Heisman voting, was just 5/12 through the air and mustered just 11 yards on the ground, this after rushing for over 1000 yards on the season. A short throw to FB Richard Watson on the teams first drive would tie the game at 7 in the 1st. It was the lone score of the day for the Yellowjackets.

            Running Backs
In what very well could be his last game in college junior back Jawan Jamison went out with a bang. Jamison ran for 141 yards on 31 carries, helping his team dominate the time of possession in the win. Jamison would also add 5 catches for 68 yards, eclipsing the 200 total yard mark.

Senior DeAntwan Williams was able to score in his final game, giving Rutgers a 14-7 lead in the 3rd quarter.

The Yellowjackets as we mentioned were stifled vs the nations top run defense. Both FB Richard Watson and HB Jonathan Henry would run for 39 yards, and neither would find the end zone.

            Wide Receivers
Mohamed Sanu would garner 84 yards on 5 catches leading all receivers in his final collegiate game. Both WR Tim Wright and TE DC Jefferson would add a catch in what was their final game as well.

Redshirt freshman Miles Shuler added the only receiving score for the Scarlet Knights in the 1st quarter from 11 yards out.

Despite only completing 5 passes, Tech did spread the ball out to 4 different players. Leading the way was HB Jonathan Henry with his 2 catches and 46 yards. FB Richard Watson scored on a 15 yard reception as mentioned earlier.

            Defense/Special Teams
Both defenses played well today, more dominating though was Rutgers. Their defense would force Tevan Washington to fumble near his goal line, and throw an interception in the 4th quarter to Khaseem Greene.

Georgia Tech star Julian Burnett would intercept Chas Dodd in the 1st quarter, marking the only turnover for Rutgers.

Rutgers frosh kicker Robby Harrell would make it a 10 point lead in the 3rd quarter with a 35 yard FG.

            Up Next
The season ends hear for both teams. Both schools had a very successful season. For Tech, they will be on to the Super Conference and will try their luck with the big boys. Rutgers on the other hand, will replace Navy in the ACC, after earning the promotion with a 6-1 Big East record.

For the second time since 2010 the Auburn Tigers are your NCAA National Champions. The Tigers were all over in-state rivals Alabama, taking a 28-17 lead into the locker rooms at the half. Auburn's rushing attack was too much for Bama to handle, as the Tigers would score 4 times on the ground, led by HB Michael Dyer's pair. This is the third national championship for Auburn and the teams second in the BCS era.

                  Quarterback
Chas Dodd had another successful campaign under Rick Ross and his spread style offense. Though some will say he took a step back, others will say he progressed, including head coach Rick Ross, and his teammates. Dodd threw 7 less interceptions this season as a junior, 14 compared to 21, something he came into the season set on doing. With the emergence of All-American back Jawan Jamison, his touchdowns did dip, only by three, but his 28 scores through the air this season were enough to give him the Rutgers school record for career passing touchdowns, currently standing at 59.

Dodd hasn't said wether or not he is definitely coming back for his senior season, but it would certainly be foolish if he were to skip town on his senior season.

                  Running Backs
Though he was unable to recapture his All-American status at the end of the season, pre-season All-American Jawan Jamison for sure lived up to his hype. Jamison was the heart beat of the Rutgers offense rushing for 1,418 yards and garnering another 405 through the air. In total Jamison would find the end zone 16 times (12 rushing, 4 receiving) leading his team in scores.

His backup senior DeAntwan Williams had his success as well, rushing for 6 scores on the season and running for over 350 yards. Giving Rutgers a nice powerful 1-2 punch.

With Williams graduating and speculation that Jawan Jamison may bolt for the NFL, the only remaining back on the depth chart this season would be red shirt freshman Savon Huggins. Huggins a former 4-star recruit, carried the ball just 8 times in a super limited role this season.

                  Wide Receivers
Led by one of the most productive wideouts in school history in senior Mohamed Sanu the Rutgers receiving core has talent all over the field and it shows by how spread out the yardage is.

Mohamed Sanu led the team with 937 yards and 61 catches while scoring 8 times, tying him with freshman tight end Joel Andrews for the team lead. Sanu will certainly hear his named called in the upcoming NFL Draft and will have a major impact on Sundays.

Four other Rutgers players had over 400 yards receiving this includes, running back Jawan Jamison, and receivers Jeremy Deering, Miles Shuler and tight end DC Jefferson. Of the four, tight end DC Jefferson is the only player graduating, so Rutgers will be retuning some offensive fire power next season, while keeping their fingers crossed Jawan Jamison sticks around for his final season.

                  Defense
The Rutgers defense was on one of the best in the nation and for sure the best in the Big East. The Rutgers secondary forced 23 interceptions as a team leading the Big East and planting themselves in the Top 3 in the country in the stat. Logan Ryan led the way with 8 interceptions, the junior is just one of many pro prospects on the Rutgers defense. Just a junior, Ryan too is undecided whether he is going pro, or returning to New Jersey for his senior season.

Two-time All-American Scott Vallone was the motor up front, pulverizing opponents offensive lines. Vallone recorded 13.5 sacks, giving him 20.5 in his two year stint under Rick Ross and co, 14 more than the next closest guy on his team.

                  Special Teams
True freshman kicker Robby Harrell had a solid season in replacing a former all-American in San San Te. Harrell who doesn't have a strong leg just yet, hit 83% of his kicks, with his longest coming from just 44 yards out.

Jawan Jamison, Logan Ryan, Leaving School For NFL, Seniors Say Farewell

Two of Rutgers most talented players have decided to forgo their senior season and take their chances in the NFL. Joining a litany of seniors such as Mohamed Sanu, Scott Vallone, and Duron Harmon who will be working out extensively for this April's draft.

Jawan Jamison burst onto the scene his sophomore season, the first year under Rick Ross. Jamison would end his sophomore campaign with 2nd team All-American honors, the first back since Ray Rice to garner such praise. His success led to a preseason All-American honor this season and he was even projected as a 3rd place Heisman finisher. Although he would soon drop out of that race, he still put up monster number this junior season which will be hard for pro scouts to ignore. Rutger is sure going to miss him.

The defensive secondary already being depleted due to graduation, took another hit when Logan Ryan announced he too will be heading to the NFL. Ryan had a Big East best 8 interceptions this season and was the heartbeat of a secondary that was Top 5 in the country in interceptions.

Notable Departures: HB Jawan Jamison (NFL), CB Logan Ryan (NFL), DT Scott Vallone (Grad), WR Mohamed Sanu (Grad), WR Tim Wright (Grad), MLB Steve Beauharnais (Grad), FS Khaseem Greene (Grad), CB Brandon Jones (Grad).

Rutgers, Coach Ross Bring In Best Recruiting Class In Years, Possibly Ever

Coach Ross was true to his word when he said he wanted to do two things when it came to Rutgers football and recruiting. One, keep New Jersey's best players in the state and two, infiltrate the south and build the Rutgers brand. Two years into his stay he is doing just that as Rutgers has brought in the #13 ranked recruiting class in the country. The best class ever for the school.

The class is highlighted by 4-star Scott Morrison signed late in the offseason. Top of the class, Scott Morrison from Bonita Springs, FL and the infamous IMG Acadmey, was ranked the #3 quarterback in the country and a huge get for Coach Ross, and essentially fell into his lap. Morrison is going to be expected to take a redshirt his first year on campus, something he understood when signed.

Rutgers also brought in a trio of dynamic playmakers on offense, 4-star WR Dustin Reese hails from Bridgeton, NJ and was a star at Bergen Catholic. Reese was one of the first signees for Rutgers this season, motivated by the closeness to home. Alongside Reese, another 4-star WR from all the way down the bayou, is Eric Mason. Mason is one of two players from Louisiana to sign with Rutgers this offseason and is the fastest of all the players brought in. Rounding out the trio is a 4-star HB Nick McDonald. McDonald hails from Newburg, Kentucky and had originally gave a soft commitment to Cincinnati.

2013 Conference Alignment is Here, Super Conference to Get Four

Here is a quick overview of the conference realignment and how it works every year.

The Super Conference (Big 12) will only gain 3 teams this season as Alabama, a member of the Super Conference (Big 12) already, made the National Championship game. Missouri an original member, was chosen to stay over Texas A&M. Joining the Super Conference will be Auburn, Nebraska, Georgia Tech, and USC.

Our own Rutgers squad will make the jump to the ACC after winning the Big East. Replacing them will be Navy who mustered just 1 win in ACC play last season, the teams first in the conference.

                        Pac 12, Mountain West, WAC
Colorado 2-10, 1-8 last place in PAC 12 demoted to Mountain West Conference.
#3 TCU 12-1, 8-0 Mountain West Champion promoted to Pac-12.

Southern Miss 4-8, 1-7 last place in SEC, will be demoted to C-USA.
Central Florida 10-4, 9-1 C-USA Champions, promoted to SEC.

Thank you for the kind words and following along! I appreciate it! I love playing with Rutgers in the NCAA series I always have, partly because I'm from NJ, but mostly because there always better than they should be makes it more fun! It is on to the ACC this season, hopefully better success than real life in the Big 10!

                            2013 Season Preview

Screen Shot 2019-10-22 at 10.26.11 AM

The 2013 schedule looks much different for the Scarlet Knights then in years past. No longer does Rutgers play in the Big East as they earned the conference promotion after winning the title last season. With the promotion comes some much stiffer competition, something Rick Ross and co. wanted to do from the beginning.

With just 3 non-conference games opposed to the 4 in Big East play, Rutgers will open the season on the west coast, taking on Fresno State of the Mountain West, the first time Rutgers has head out west in quite some time. The Knights don't play another non-conference game until October 19th, when they face their rival Army, to close out a 3 game set, started back in 2011. Rutgers actually dropped Eastern Michigan from their schedule to play Army. Rounding out their non-conference schedule is a home game vs MAC opponent Kent St.

In conference play, Rutgers toughest game looks like it will be on the road vs #12 Virginia Tech, other than that they lucked out as some big time programs will travel north to Jersey. Florida State, #19 Miami, and Notre Dame will all head to Rutgers for their conference matchups.

For the first time since 2008 and just the second time ever these two teams match up. Five years ago in New Brunswick it was all Fresno State in a 24-7 win in which a young running back named Ryan Matthews would torch the Rutgers D for 163 yards. This go around Fresno State is led by their passing game and senior QB Greg Watson. Watson is making his first career start as he was the long time back up to Derek Carr.

The Fresno State running game will feature a first time starter as well in red-shirt junior Joshua Quezada, so it will be an interesting matchup vs the Rutgers defense that had to replace so many starters from last seasons team.

The Scarlet Knights will be led into the game by senior First Team All-ACC QB Chas Dodd. Dodd is looking to improve on his passed two season and take himself and Rutgers to the next level, their season clearly hinges on his performances. With Jawan Jamison gone into the NFL, its now Savon Huggins turn to man the backfield. The redshirt sophomore is a former 4-star recruit and can make an immediate impact if things go well.

Fresno State Key Players (Stats are from last season)

                                Offense
One of the biggest question coming into this season was how good Rutgers ground game could be now that Jawan Jamison is onto the NFL. Well, fans got their answer on Saturday afternoon when Savon Huggins led his team to a 29-24 win through rainy, wet conditions.

Huggins a red shirt sophomore making his first start, would run for 131 yards and two scores. His first score came on a beautiful 15 yard run where he dragged three Bulldog defenders into the end zone with him. His final score in the 4th quarter would be the eventual game winner, giving RU a 29-17 lead in the 4th quarter.

Senior QB Chas Dodd played turnover free football and threw for just under 300 yards and a score in the game. He connected with redshirt junior Brandon Coleman 7 times for 106 yards. His best performance of his career.

Fresno State fans can't seem to think what if? As their starting QB Greg Watson went down in the 2nd quarter with a strained tricep. His back up Brian Buller did a wonderful job filling in, throwing for 2 scores and almost leading his team back.

Buller would have two long scores in the game, a 43 yard strike to AJ Johnson which was reviewed but upheld, and a 38 yard dime to Victor Dean. The latter brought the Bulldogs to within 5 points, with over 4 minutes left in the game.

Rutgers could have put the game away earlier but the team started just 2/8 on their 3rd down conversions.

Fresno States run game was led by junior Joshua Quezada who began his career at BYU. Quezada took the ball 22 times for 64 yards in his first game at Fresno State.

                                Defense
The second biggest question coming into the season was how would Rutgers defensive secondary perform with a litany of new players. After one game it is a little tough to tell, though there is definitely some work to do.

Rutgers secondary didn't record an interception to open the season, after recording a school record 23 last season. Twice did they allow a Fresno State wideout get behind them for long scores, this with a back up quarterback in the game. Something that won't fly in the ACC for a very long time.

Leading the way on defense for Rutgers was Darrell Givens and Justin Mills. Givens would record a team high 8 tackles, while Mills recorded 2 sacks in his first career start for the Scarlet Knights.

Fresno State middle linebacker Ryan Boschma was a force with 7 tackles and 4 of them coming in the backfield.

                                Special Teams
Rutgers and Coach Ross may have to look into going for it on 4th down a lot more often as it seems their sophomore kicker Robby Harrell just doesn't have the leg needed for deep kicks. His long last season was just 42 yards with gusty winds in his favor.

Harrell would finish 3/4 on his kicks, but his miss from 49 yards is worrisome too many.

Fresno State kicker Garrett Swanson was perfect for the Bulldogs, hitting his only attempt from 35 yards, and nailing all 3 of his extra points.

The Scarlet Knights make their ACC debut next week vs 1-0 Kansas State. K-State is coming off of a 38-17 home win over ACC foe Notre Dame.
