Bulls lay claim to nation's top recruiting class following commitment from five-star ATH Stone
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Zac White and Franklin Sapp rewrote the record books and help shape what USF football is today as a brand. William Stone and Andrew Vincent will try to continue that legacy.

A week removed from five-star WR Andrew Vincent committing, Miami five-star athlete William Stone joined him with a commitment to the Bulls. At six-feet and 206 pounds, Stone is a more filled out version of Vincent with added versatility, similar to White. Miami was recruiting him as a running back -- his natural and current position in high school -- but the Bulls like him at receiver.

Wherever he ends up playing, Stone is a talented prospect and with two five stars in the same class, USF now has the nation's top ranked recruiting class. It was aided by the addition of three-star defensive end Dale Bolen out of IMG Academy. Bolen is a Wisconsin transplant who moved down to Bradenton where he has played for the Ascenders for the past two seasons. Bolden fits naturally as a 4-3 defensive end although he is more of a project than an instant impact player.

The Bulls are now focused on getting someone to throw the football to Stone and Vincent. They are zeroing on California QB prospect Mike McFarland, the top rated quarterback in the country. He will be on campus this weekend.

Bulls extend lead of nation's top recruiting class with commitment from top ranked QB McFarland
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Just how good will this USF recruiting class end up being? Only time will tell but for now, the Bulls continue to lay claim to the nation's top recruiting class and it keeps getting better. Over the weekend, South Florida got commitments from four-star QB Mike McFarland and four-star ATH Brad Jones.

McFarland is the nation's top ranked quarterback and with good reason as the six-foot-four prospect out of California has the arm talent of the likes of David Johnson and the athleticism of Michael Harrell. While 40 times aren't the only test for athleticism, it's a pretty good barometer and both players have similar verified 40 times as high school seniors. Harrell ran a 4.64 while McFarland ran a 4.68.

McFarland is expected to redshirt next season and should Harrell decide to come back for a senior season, the stage should be set for McFarland to compete for the starting job. The Bulls signed three quarterbacks last cycle in Jeremy Thomas, Eugene Shaw and James Pittman but none have the arm talent that McFarland does and outside of Pittman, none of them have his athleticism either.

Jones' commitment got a lot less fanfare but is an important get for the Bulls. At six-foot-four and 299 pounds, Jones projects as a defensive tackle at the next level although he currently plays both side of the ball for his high school. The signing gives USF some flexibility as they have three other defensive linemen in the class -- Daniel Elliott, Josh Brown and Dale Bolen -- as well as three other offensive linemen in Joel Dixon, Charles Joseph and Jimmie Hurd. Either side that Jones goes on, he joins a class loaded with depth at positions that USF needed to rebuild.

The exciting part for Bulls fans about this class is that it might not be done. Cornerback Dan Ross is on commit watch and he's a developmental project at corner, a position the Bulls have done a good job of maximizing talent out of that position. Michael Bush was a three-star recruit and is now one of the better defensive backs in the Big 12.

Ross and fellow three-star CB Ronnie Gay fall in that category of developmental guys that USF is after, Jason Garcia is not. Garcia is a potential day-one starter and after missing out on five-star Sonny Underwood, bouncing back with Garcia would be a huge get as his visiting day approaches.

There's also four-star defensive tackle Jeremy Daniels and four-star safety Edgar Thompson. Thompson is likely going to be a battle but for Daniels, USF is considered the favorite and could net USF their fifth defensive linemen of this class.

It's like USF has taken over the title of being "Quarterback U". Didn't you just signed 3 kids last year at QB and now you go out and add the #1 QB again.

Yup, the QB room was looking thin so I added three 3-star QBs so I was able to go all in on just one QB this cycle because if I missed, it wouldn't be that bad. I also was able to add California as a pipeline last cycle.

I don't know if we can claim QBU yet since we've really only had one successful QB in Grant Oliver. Steven Bench before him was limited, David Johnson after him was inconsistent and a turnover machine and Harrell is more of a running QB/game manager.

South Florida adds cornerback Dan Ross to the class, will Garcia and Gay join him?
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF learned the hard way last season not to have all of it's eggs in one basket when Sonny Underwood's decision to go to Iowa left them very thin at corner as far as depth. The Bulls made sure that won't happen this cycle with five-star CB Jason Garcia's looming decision.

South Florida picked up a commitment from three-star CB Dan Ross out of Miami, Florida with the Northwestern product picking the Bulls over a few Group of 5 schools. FIU, Louisiana, Troy, FAU and Middle Tennessee State were all in the running but it was always USF's battle to lose. The Bulls are in a similar situation with cornerback Ronnie Gay who is expected to be on campus this week and on commit watch.

A lanky corner that can use a few extra meals, Ross is probably a few years away from being on a college football field, at least consistently but that's not an issue for the Bulls. They've shown over the years that they can develop corners and USF should be set at corner for next season with Marcus Hines and Ben Lewis. Should either of them go pro following next season, that's where landing someone like Garcia could come in handy.

Either way, should Gay join Ross, both should compete for playing time in their second seasons in Tampa, making the addition of Ross an the potential addition of Gay that much more important if Garcia signs elsewhere.
