Homecoming Weekend nets seven commitments for Bulls, including five-stars LB Hughes and HB Green
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider
Nothing will ever top last year's big recruiting weekend where twelve recruits committed over the span of forty eight hours but this weekend gave it its run for its money as seven different recruits committed to the Bulls, including five-star linebacker Travis Hughes and five-star running back Derrick Green.
Joining the two five-stars were four-star QB Nick Williams, another linebacker in four-star Dallas Gross, four star guard Bobby Davis, three-star punter Marcus McClelland and three start tight end Ryne Fox.
Hughes is a big time get, perhaps the best recruit USF has ever landed in their front seven. The 22nd ranked player in the country, Hughes has running back speed with the explosive power of an elite edge rusher. He has room to fill out on his six-foot-five frame and could play either on the line of scrimmage as a stand up backer or off the ball. His best bet at the next level would be as an off the ball linebacker due to his exceptional cover ability.
Even with Hughes accolades, he's not the highest ranked recruit in the class. Green has slid in the rankings a bit since his breakout sophomore season but he's still an elite recruit. There are some redundancies between him and Gerald Mitchell from last year's class. Their numbers are almost identical but Green is a bit of a more powerful back. If David Fuller does end up signing with the Bulls, they'll have a loaded running back room, perhaps the most talented they've ever had.
The most important signee of the weekend might have been quarterback Nick Williams. USF didn't take a QB last cycle and with Mike McFarland getting injured this season, he didn't get a chance to run away with the job and likely keep USF from landing a guy like Williams. Williams is a bit more physically matured but in terms of arm talent and athleticism, they are almost carbon copies.
David and Gross' commitment probably got lost in the hype of the five-stars and a QB in Williams but they were big gets for Malcolm Francois and his staff. David fits the build of what the team wants in guard especially in their stretch and power concepts that ask their offensive lineman to get to the second level. David is a good athlete with not a lot of bad weight, if any. With Brian Smith likely headed to the NFL, an opening could be happening at guard with Davis competing for playing time.
After signing three linebackers last cycle, including two that cracked the two-deep in John Reed and Skyler Wilson, USF is signing another two linebackers to the roster. Unlike Hughes, Gross is almost guaranteed to play at the line of scrimmage in the team's 3-4 scheme. He's not as athletic as most of the other linebackers and will need to make his impact as either a pass rusher, something he hasn't done much of or setting the edge.
You need solid three-stars to have a good class and USF is hoping to perhaps find some gems in Fox and McClelland. Fox plays four-back in his high school Wing T offense but will almost certainly play tight end at the next level. There is a big question about whether or not he has enough athleticism to pull it off. This is a risky take and perhaps one the Bulls felt like they had to pull off with two seniors at tight end on the roster.
McClelland will replace senior punter Allen Carrington.
The seven commitments brought USF's class total to 14 and gave them the top ranked recruiting class in the country. While the numbers situation is always fluid due to transfers and potential early departures to the draft, the Bulls have roughly six open spots on their roster. One of those is expected to go to five-star running back David Fuller whose going to be on campus next weekend. What do they do with the other five?
They'll try and need to land at least one of the corners in Corey Johnson and Sid Robinson. Robinson is a heavy Clemson lean but with Johnson, USF is in a good spot. They wanted to sign another defensive back in Troy Bell out of Ohio who was on campus this past weekend but did not commit. While Robinson is a long shot and Bell is 50/50, USF will likely hold three roster spots for those defensive backs.
The other two could very well go to four-star receiver David Ryan and kicker Craig Tyree out of Texas. Tyree has been committed to Stanford for a while but the eight ranked kicker in the country has been in contact with USF. For Ryan, his game of chicken might be coming to an end. The four-star WR has been holding out for bigger offers but at this moment, USF and UCF are his only Power 5 offers. Mississippi State has shown interest but has yet to offer him.
