Homecoming Weekend nets seven commitments for Bulls, including five-stars LB Hughes and HB Green
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Nothing will ever top last year's big recruiting weekend where twelve recruits committed over the span of forty eight hours but this weekend gave it its run for its money as seven different recruits committed to the Bulls, including five-star linebacker Travis Hughes and five-star running back Derrick Green.

Joining the two five-stars were four-star QB Nick Williams, another linebacker in four-star Dallas Gross, four star guard Bobby Davis, three-star punter Marcus McClelland and three start tight end Ryne Fox.

Hughes is a big time get, perhaps the best recruit USF has ever landed in their front seven. The 22nd ranked player in the country, Hughes has running back speed with the explosive power of an elite edge rusher. He has room to fill out on his six-foot-five frame and could play either on the line of scrimmage as a stand up backer or off the ball. His best bet at the next level would be as an off the ball linebacker due to his exceptional cover ability.

Even with Hughes accolades, he's not the highest ranked recruit in the class. Green has slid in the rankings a bit since his breakout sophomore season but he's still an elite recruit. There are some redundancies between him and Gerald Mitchell from last year's class. Their numbers are almost identical but Green is a bit of a more powerful back. If David Fuller does end up signing with the Bulls, they'll have a loaded running back room, perhaps the most talented they've ever had.

The most important signee of the weekend might have been quarterback Nick Williams. USF didn't take a QB last cycle and with Mike McFarland getting injured this season, he didn't get a chance to run away with the job and likely keep USF from landing a guy like Williams. Williams is a bit more physically matured but in terms of arm talent and athleticism, they are almost carbon copies.

David and Gross' commitment probably got lost in the hype of the five-stars and a QB in Williams but they were big gets for Malcolm Francois and his staff. David fits the build of what the team wants in guard especially in their stretch and power concepts that ask their offensive lineman to get to the second level. David is a good athlete with not a lot of bad weight, if any. With Brian Smith likely headed to the NFL, an opening could be happening at guard with Davis competing for playing time.

After signing three linebackers last cycle, including two that cracked the two-deep in John Reed and Skyler Wilson, USF is signing another two linebackers to the roster. Unlike Hughes, Gross is almost guaranteed to play at the line of scrimmage in the team's 3-4 scheme. He's not as athletic as most of the other linebackers and will need to make his impact as either a pass rusher, something he hasn't done much of or setting the edge.

You need solid three-stars to have a good class and USF is hoping to perhaps find some gems in Fox and McClelland. Fox plays four-back in his high school Wing T offense but will almost certainly play tight end at the next level. There is a big question about whether or not he has enough athleticism to pull it off. This is a risky take and perhaps one the Bulls felt like they had to pull off with two seniors at tight end on the roster.

McClelland will replace senior punter Allen Carrington.

The seven commitments brought USF's class total to 14 and gave them the top ranked recruiting class in the country. While the numbers situation is always fluid due to transfers and potential early departures to the draft, the Bulls have roughly six open spots on their roster. One of those is expected to go to five-star running back David Fuller whose going to be on campus next weekend. What do they do with the other five?

They'll try and need to land at least one of the corners in Corey Johnson and Sid Robinson. Robinson is a heavy Clemson lean but with Johnson, USF is in a good spot. They wanted to sign another defensive back in Troy Bell out of Ohio who was on campus this past weekend but did not commit. While Robinson is a long shot and Bell is 50/50, USF will likely hold three roster spots for those defensive backs.

The other two could very well go to four-star receiver David Ryan and kicker Craig Tyree out of Texas. Tyree has been committed to Stanford for a while but the eight ranked kicker in the country has been in contact with USF. For Ryan, his game of chicken might be coming to an end. The four-star WR has been holding out for bigger offers but at this moment, USF and UCF are his only Power 5 offers. Mississippi State has shown interest but has yet to offer him.

Mike McFarland returns to practice but will he get green light for Texas Tech?
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

It may be that USF fans won’t know if Mike McFarland is back at quarterback until game time Saturday night against Texas Tech.

McFarland — who has missed the past five games due to an abdominal tear he suffered in the season opener — returned to USF’s practice on Wednesday morning, but all media has been told officially is that he was “stretching and moving about.”

That report came from offensive coordinator Doc Holliday after practice, but that was the extent of the update.

“We’re just waiting for the trainers to give us the clearance to turn him loose,” Holiday said. “Still waiting to get the word. You guys need to ask Coach (Malcolm) Francois that kind of stuff, it’s probably best to let him address those injury issues.”

The only problem with that is Francois doesn’t address the media after Monday’s press conference and Wednesday's press availability, so unless word leaks out, there may not be an official statement. Certainly, USF’s staff doesn’t want to tip its hand to Texas Tech for this weekend’s game.

McFarland redshirted in 2021 during the Bulls national championship run and served as QB4. Coming out of high school, McFarland, who is a native of the El Toro, California area, ranked as one of the top quarterback prospects in the country. The 247Sports Composite ranked McFarland as the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the nation.

While the Bulls are 5-1, the passing offense has struggled and is currently ranked 103rd in the country. James Pittman has improved as a passer and is a dangerous threat as a runner but has 10 interceptions on the season to just six touchdowns. Prior to the injury, McFarland had completed 83 percent of his passes.

Peach State pipeline returns as Bulls land five-star Georgia HB David Fuller, 2nd 5-star running back in class
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

After being a long time Middle Tennessee State commitment, five-star running back David Fuller did what everyone expected him to do over the weekend. On Friday, Fuller committed to the South Florida Bulls before attending the team's win over Texas Tech in person for an official visit.

As is typically the case when a five-star recruit commits, Fuller's commitment overshadowed commitments from three-star defensive tackle Marcus McCauley and four-star receiver David Ryan who also committed later in the weekend.

Fuller is the third five-star recruit in the class and the second five-star running back, joining Derrick Green who committed last week. Green and Fuller have been in constant communication since USF got on Fuller's radar and according to both players, they welcomed the competition with Green congratulating Fuller on his commitment social media post.

With the addition of Fuller, USF now has four five-star recruits either on their roster or their recruiting class. Even if Troy Henry goes pro, which is expected, they'll still have three five star recruits next season in Green, Fuller and Gerald Mitchell. Their testing numbers are almost identical with both Mitchell and Fuller having ran verified 4.44 forties with Green being a tad bit slower at 4.48. All three are around the six-foot, 200 pound range with Green perhaps having the stockier build of the three.

Mitchell has been effective this season with 6.0 yards per carry and two touchdowns on 48 carries. With Greg Johnston set to graduate and Henry likely NFL bound, the path is clear for these three five-star running backs to share the load.

While it's tough to know exactly why a recruit commits when they did, David Ryan likely made a smart business decision to lock up a roster spot while he can on what is turning out to be a very good class on paper. With offers from UCF and FIU, Ryan had been a lean towards the Bulls for a while now but never pulled the trigger. The Bulls are close to closing up shop on this current class and they were able to add a very speedy receiver in Ryan. He's extremely raw as a receiver and while Mike Holmes might be a good comparison, Ryan isn't as college ready as Holmes. He'll likely have to make his bones as a special teams guy for a year or two before being able to get on the field.

McCauley is yet another three-star recruit from the Sunshine State that the Bulls have littered their roster with over the year in hopes that maybe one of them pops. This is a borderline take in my opinion as McCauley doesn't possess the level of athleticism that one would want even from an interior defensive linemen. He lacks the ideal size to play nose in a three-man front and lacks the athleticism to be a three-technique in a four-man front. McCauley only fielded offers from UAB, Memphis, Florida Atlantic and Troy. Clearly the Bulls saw something in him that many other top programs didn't.

USF is hosting cornerback Sid Robinson this weekend, the top prospect left on their big board. Ideally, Robinson and Winter Haven CB Corey Johnson would be the perfect Christmas present but it's going to be a tough battle for either of them. Johnson is visiting Vanderbilt this weekend.

Troy Bell, an athlete out of Ohio, is also visiting Temple this weekend and many of their insiders expect the four-star athlete to potential commit to the Owls. With the nation's top recruiting class, there aren't a lot to gripe about but the Bulls striking out in the defensive backfield would be a huge blow.

Henry Breaks School Record in 42-17 Over Baylor Bears
If Malcolm Francois wanted to turn the South Florida Bulls from a lowly Group of 5 school into not just a competitive team but an elite program, he needed to snatch the top tier recruits from the jaws of the bluebloods.

He did just that when he was able to sign Troy Henry right from Alabama, Auburn and the SEC's backyard and on Saturday, Henry broke the school record for single season rushing yards and tied the single season rushing touchdown record in the 42-17 win over Baylor.

Henry rushed for 222 yards and five touchdowns, breaking the yardage record on his fourth touchdown to give him 1,455 yards on the season with four more regular season games to go. He tied Michael Pierre's record on the next touchdown, his 21st of the season. If Henry is able to break that record, he would hold all of the team's rushing records.

Bulls Withstand a Tough Road Trip, Winning 31-28 vs. TCU
Troy Henry had just eight carries when TCU finally broke through, taking their first lead of the day with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.

The Bulls opened the next possession with three straight handoffs to Henry with the third one going for a 49-yard touchdown as the Bulls held off the Horned Frogs attempt at an upset with a 31-28 win.

Henry had left the game with an elbow injury but returned to finish the game with 161 rushing yards and a touchdown to become the school's all time leader in rushing touchdowns.

Henry's injury allowed Gerald Mitchell and Greg Johnston to get more playing time. Following Drew Gray's touchdown with five minutes left in the game, Johnston's 51-yard run helped setup Mitchell's third touchdown of the day which would turn out to be the game winner.

Four-star athlete Troy Bell releases top two; USF not included
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

It's hard to find gripes with the recruiting efforts of the USF coaching staff but when it comes to defensive backs, they've had a few swings and misses.

Troy Bell is the latest with the four-star athlete out of Delaware, Ohio releasing a top two on Monday morning which included Temple -- a school he recently visited -- and Western Michigan but not USF. The Bulls was considered the front-runner at one point for the projected defensive back. Syracuse had also been in the running but was not included in the final two.

What's next for the Bulls? They currently have six cornerbacks on the roster who are all underclassmen with three being freshmen. They are on the trail for four-star cornerbacks Sid Robinson and Corey Johnson.

Safety is a bit more scarce. Starting free safety Sam Peterson could decide to forgo his senior season leaving the Bulls with just five scholarship safeties. Redshirt sophomores Pierre Hodge and Chris Wade have been career backups and if either of them get their degrees by the spring, they could be candidates to transfer out.

There aren't a lot of options at this point in the cycle at the position and judging by the latest USF offer that went out, USF won't chase one. The Bulls offered three-star Texas receiver Steven Townsend according to his social media post. Townsend is a Marshall commit with verified sub 4.4 speed that has a similar profile as current Bulls commits Shane Peterson and David Ryan.

Run of the Bulls ‣ USF Football News
Andrew Lake -- 247 Sports Staff Writer

                              ‣ DT Jeremy Daniels could miss rest of the season with abdominal injury

USF could be without it's best defensive lineman for the rest of the season. Defensive tackle Jeremy Daniels has missed the last two games with an abdominal injury and it's being reported that he could miss the rest of the season with the injury.

The former Michigan four-star recruit was on pace to improve from his freshman stats with thirteen tackles on the season along with six tackles for loss and four sacks.

Sophomore Daniel Elliott, signed in the same class as Daniels, flashed last week against TCU while redshirt freshman Josh Brown also got to crack the rotation.

                              ‣ Shakeup at top of BCS opens repeat opportunity for Bulls

Due to a fairly weak schedule, USF's loss to Ohio State all but shut their doors on potentially making it to the BCS Championship Game as a one-loss team over any undefeated P5 teams. With Penn State and Minnesota losing, a two-loss Michigan was able to leap frog several one-loss teams including the Bulls to become the #1 team in the nation.

How is that good for the Bulls? Michigan ends the season at home against Ohio State. A Ohio State win would only aid USF's placement in the rankings and it's clear now that whoever makes the BCS game is going to have at least one-loss. Why not the Bulls?

Recruiting Class in Review: The best recruiting class in school history? 2019 lays a strong case
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

The argument could be made that the 2021 national championship was won in large part due to the recruiting efforts of the 2019 cycle which featured arguably the best quarterback in school history, a 1000-yard rusher and three defensive stars. Can't as for much more than that.

With everyone in that class heading into either their senior or redshirt junior season, let's revisit that class and grade it out. The grading criteria is as follows: 1 star for non-contributor, 2 star for depth player, 3 star for contributor, 4 star for impact starter, 5 star for a star player.

                                2019 USF Bulls Recruiting Class

Analysis » Thomas never got to be the feature back as all three seasons, the Bulls used a platoon at running back but even then, Thomas was more then formidable. He led the Bulls in rushing in 2021, his final season, to earn him his fourth star as a player.
                                Grade » 4-star

                                CB Marcus Hines [ATH #3]: 6'2", 179lbs | Tampa, FL | 5-star | 4.34 40-yd dash, 310 Bench Press Max, 250 Squat Max
Career Stats » 86 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 5 interceptions.
Analysis » The lack of counting stats skew some perceptions of Hines as a player. He came in with a lot of hype being that he was a local five-star kid and those don't come often even in the talent rich area of Hillsborough County. He was a day-one starter and never left the field and while his playmaking skills were never fully displayed, he was nothing less than a stud.

                                DE Chuck Sanders [ATH #20]: 6'2", 237lbs | Crystal Lake, IL | 4-star | 4.68 40-yd dash, 430 Bench Press Max, 645 Squat Max
Career Stats » 101 tackles, 63 tackles for loss, 43 sacks, 3 pass deflections.
Analysis » An argument could be made, quite easily, that Sanders is the best defensive lineman in school history, certainly the best pass rusher, and he's in the discussion for best defensive player ever. He has school records in sacks in a season, 22, and in his career with 43.

                                Career Stats » 560 of 743, 6138 yards, 56 touchdowns, 29 interceptions, 415 carries, 2857 yards, 26 touchdowns.
Analysis » Harrell was rushed into a starting job in 2019 with Malcolm Francois returning as a play caller after nearly a decade of not doing so. He stabled the ship and the Bulls offense has changed ever since then. He finished the job in 2021 as each season he got better, ultimately winning a national championship. The lack of hardware makes his case as the greatest Bulls player ever not as strong as it should be but without a doubt, he's up there.

Career Stats » 262 tackles, 47 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, 2 interceptions, 10 pass deflections.
Analysis » Stewart led the team in tackles his last two seasons and was a three-year starter. He continued the lineage of great USF linebackers and once again, he could be considered one of the best to ever do it for the Bulls. He's somewhere between a four-star and a five-star but his accolades and hardware gives him that fifth star.

Career Stats » 81 tackles, 2 sacks, 11 interceptions, 8 pass deflections, 1 touchdown, forced fumble.
Analysis » Lewis was in the shadows of Marcus Hines since he was a recruit but he more than held his own. He owns the team record for most career interceptions and was an All-American. Similar to Stewart, he's somewhere between a four-star and a five-star but any time you are in the record books and was a three-year contributor or starter, you've earned that fifth star.

                                Career Stats » 1 reception, 21 yards.
Analysis » They can't all be winners. Hale had the physical profile to be a great college receiver but the team's switch from a pass-happy offense to a run-first and second approach definitely affected his development. He also hasn't been able to get on the field and despite returning for a senior season, he has just one catch.

                                Career Stats » 4 pancakes.
Analysis » McBride got stuck behind a very good player in Jamie Babcock and spent his first three seasons as a backup. He got his chance this season but then lost the starting job to a redshirt freshman in Joel Dixon. McBride's few starts earned him a second star but a disappointing career nevertheless.

                                LB Stephen Hill [LB #17]: 6'4", 249lbs | Weslaco, TX | 4-star | 4.54 yd-dash, 440 Bench Press Max, 560 Squat Max
Career Stats » 92 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, interception.
Analysis » The switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 front has impacted Hill's contribution and his 2021 production appears to be an outlier after not doing much his first two seasons and jumping onto the scene last year with 65 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and three sacks in his All-American season. It's hard to give him anything less than a four-star due to that season but he'll have an interesting decision to make after the season on whether that one season is enough for the pros.

Career Stats » 7 tackles, tackle for loss, sack.
Analysis » Farris' move to outside linebacker hasn't helped his ability to get on the field. He does have a sack this season, the first of his career, but he's mostly been a backup after redshirting as a freshman.

Career Stats » 6 pancakes, 3 sacks allowed.
Analysis » It took a while but Lucas finally evolved into the starting left tackle that many imagined when he signed with the Bulls back in 2019. He should return next season as a fifth-year senior and be an anchor for that offensive line.
                                Grade » 3-star

                                DE John Mansfield [DE #28]: 6'0", 240lbs | Tampa, FL | 3-star | 4.78 40-yd dash, 420 Bench Press Max, 545 Squat Max
Career Stats » 4 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, sack.
Analysis » Mansfield is a bit of tweener, lacking the athleticism to be a straight up edge rusher in both even and odd fronts and is too undersized to be a true five or three technique. The result? Special teams duties.

                                TE Jonathan Lamb [TE #31]: 6'6", 236lbs | Laguna Hills, CA | 3-star | 4.70 40-yd dash, 410 Bench Press Max, 240 Squat Max
Career Stats » 7 receptions, 104 yards, touchdown, 14 pancakes.
Analysis » Lamb has been used situationally as a blocker since he arrived and has even started to catch some passes with this season with six receptions. He was exactly what he was projected to be and can't be mad at that.

                                WR James Ellison [WR #113]: 5'11", 189lbs | Monterey, CA | 3-star | 4.36 40-yd dash, 235 Bench Press Max, 195 Squat Max
                                Career Stats » 55 receptions, 701 yards, 3 touchdowns.
Analysis » Ellison and Harrell developed a connection in 2020 but in 2021, the rise of the freshmen receivers saw him go back to being a third and fourth option. He's remained in that role in 2022. Overall, he's been a solid contributor and his speed has helped open some games up.

Career Stats » 59 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 2 interceptions.
Analysis » Clark did not touch the field for his first three seasons, redshirting his first and then being a backup for the next two. This season, Clark has been the Bulls best linebacker and could win some trophies. By next season, he could have earned that fourth star.

Analysis » Similar to Lamb, Knox has been used primarily as a blocker. However, he hasn't played as much as Lamb and quite frankly, hasn't made much of an impact in his four seasons.

Analysis » The Bulls didn't do much punting with Carrington especially after the 2020 season, he hasn't punted more than 20 times since. He's been solid when asked upon.

Analysis » Turner went three seasons without missing an extra point and didn't miss a kick all 2020. Similar to Carrington, he wasn't asked to do much but when asked, Turner was automatic.

Most Important Signing: Hines was a five-star prospect in their backyard that everyone in the country wanted. USF had been able to poach but could they stop the poaching? They proved to be able to do so by not only signing Hines but having his recruitment be relatively drama free.

Most Productive Signing: It's all about the quarterback so Harrell wins the tie between himself, Chuck Sanders and Scott Stewart.

Biggest Bust of the Class: That's an easy one. Chad Hale was a four-star that almost never played and when he did, he didn't do much.

Most Untapped Potential: What would James Thomas look like as a solo feature back? We're getting a glimpse with Troy Henry this season and coming out of high school, Thomas had the more prototypical build for a pro running back.

Biggest Steal of the Class: Harrell was supposed to go to FIU. He was a local kid, his dad was on the staff, his brother was on the track team. USF snatched him up at NSD and he turned out to be the starting QB for a national championship team, losing just two games as a starter.

Biggest Lost of the Class: Signing five-star WR Ben Medlock would have given the Bulls all three five-stars in the state of Florida. Medlock went to the Gators and until this season, hadn't really done much. He had a solid 2021 season but really turned on this season, averaging 69.5 yards per game.
