Overtime Heartbreaker for the Red Wolves

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Arkansas State Red Wolves fell to in-state rival Arkansas 48-35 in overtime. Arkansas State had many chances but died by the turnovers that plagued them all of last season.

Arkansas State starts the game with a rough sack where the offensive line looked non-existent. Layne Hatcher is able to scramble for 13 yards to make up some ground and make a couple of good throws before being forced into a 4th and 1. Marcel Murray is able to convert the 4th and 1 on the ground. Hatcher finds Javan Hawes for a gain of 13 and even finds Chester Kimbrough on an 11 yard gain. He finds Paul in the endzone but Paul drops it!! Isaiah Azubuike gets the ball on an option play on 3rd down and takes it 23 yards for the touchdown to put Arkansas State up 7-0. Arkansas makes quick work on offense. Jefferson finds Woods for 31 yards before finding Knox for a gain of 12 and a 13 yard touchdown pass to make it 7-7. After a good drive, Deshazor drops a pass that forces a 4th down punt. Arkansas State's defense is able to force a punt as well.

After a couple bad incompletions, Hatcher finds Hawes on the sideline for 14 yards and then finds Corey Rucker for a 49 yard gain. He fires a pass to Deshazor in the endzone for a 14 yard touchdown to make it 14-7. Arkansas drives into Arkansas State territory before Jefferson is picked off by Switzer! Both teams trade a couple punts before Arkansas drives down into Arkansas State territory and can't convert on a 4th down. Arkansas State puts together a great drive and with 3 seconds left Hatcher escapes a sack and runs it in for an 8 yard touchdown to make it 21-7 before half.

Arkansas comes out of the half firing on all cylinders and drive down the field with ease. Jefferson punches it in the endzone for a touchdown to cut the lead to 21-14. Arkansas State can't respond as Hatcher misses three passes in a row and they have to punt it away. Arkansas takes advantage and Jefferson finds Woods for a 35 yard gain to put them in position and they cap the drive off with a Jefferson to Knox 9 yard touchdown to tie it up 21-21. After a few good plays, Hatcher finds freshman Ryan Rose deep for a 40 yard gain to put them at the goal line. He then finds freshman Dusty Parrish on a fullback screen for the touchdown to make it 28-21.

Arkansas answers back immediately as Jefferson finds Knox for the 3rd time for a 13 yard touchdown to tie it up 28-28. Hatcher makes his first mistake at a crucial time as Clark jumps a curl route and intercepts it to give Arkansas the ball in great position. Jefferson punches it in from the 1 for his second rushing touchdown and his fifth touchdown of the day to make it 35-28. After a good drive by Arkansas State, they stall out and are in a 4th and long so Viator elects to go for the field goal and Grupe misses the 49 yarder! Arkansas State is able to force a punt without using any of their three timeouts and have two minutes to tie the game. Hatcher and the offense put together a great drive and cap it off with a 4th down conversion followed by a pass to Deshazor for a 15 yard touchdown! Grupe makes the extra point and makes it 35-35 with 24 seconds left. Arkansas isn't able to get in position and it forces overtime!

Arkansas State wins the toss and chooses defense first. Arkansas struggles at first but is able to score on a 14 yard pass from Jefferson to Burks to make it 42-35. Hatcher throws an interception to Andrew Parker and to add insult to injury he runs it all the way back to finish the game 48-35.

Red Wolves Bounce Back with Win in Home Opener

JONESBORO, Ark. - Despite a whole lot of turnovers and more quarterback controversy in Arkansas, the Red Wolves were able to overcome the Appalachian State Mountaineers with a 38-28 victory in their home opener.

On the first drive of the game Arkansas State drives into Appalachian State territory but can't complete a 4th and 3 as freshman Randy Rose steps out of bounds a yard shy. Appalachian State follow up with a 53 yard field goal by Greenwood to make it 3-0. Appalachian State is unable to capitalize on three redzone turnovers by Arkansas State. Hatcher throws an interception to Jones, fumbles which is recovered by Huff and throws another interception to Wright in the end zone. Hatcher has a big 28 yard run and tries to stiff arm, but the ball comes loose and luckily rolls out of bounds once again in the redzone.

To kick off the second quarter, Hatcher is able to find Corey Rucker for a 14 yard touchdown catch to make it 7-3. Appalachian State responds driving down the field and kicking a 43 yard field goal this time to make it 7-6. Arkansas State puts together a great drive but Hatcher scrambles and fumbles once again! Appalachian State can't capitalize once again and punt it away. For the first time this season we see Logan Bonner come out for Arkansas State. Bonner does a great job, hitting six straight completions and capping off the drive with an 8 yard touchdown run by Marcel Murray to make it 14-6 with a minute left in the half. Arkansas State has a chance at a hail mary to end the half, but Bonner gets sacked, the Red Wolves take a 14-6 lead into the half despite FOUR redzone turnovers.

Grosel and Appalachian State come out of the half firing. Grosel finds Pearson for 20 yards and Cole for 33, before dumping it off to Wells for a 1 yard touchdown. They complete the 2 point conversion to tie it up 14-14. Bonner responds in a big way with a 53 yard pass to Paul and a 12 yard run to put them at the goal line. Murray punches it in for a 3 yard touchdown run to make it 21-14. Appalachian State can't respond and Bonner isn't done yet. He finds Paul deep on an incredible 50 yard pass that Paul somehow catches in bounds! A couple plays later Bonner finds Paul for a 7 yard touchdown pass to make it 28-14. Appalachian State has a decent drive going but stall out and have to punt it away. Arkansas State has their worst drive yet with Bonner getting sacked and then finding Deshazor who then fumbles it away, giving the Mountaineers excellent field position.

Appalachian State is able to drive and finish off the drive with a 2 yard touchdown run by Harrington, which cuts the lead to 28-21. Bonner immediately gives it up throwing an interception to D'Marco Jackson across the middle. Appalachian State can't capitalize as they fail a 4th down conversion and give the ball back to Arkansas State. A few rushes by Murray get Arkansas State set up and Bonner is then able to find Deshazor for a 49 yard touchdown pass to make it 35-21. Grosel is able to keep it close and drive Appalachian State down the field quickly and find Wilson for a 13 yard touchdown pass to cut it back down to seven, 35-28. Arkansas State gets forced to punt it away for the first time today, but the Mountaineers give it right back with a punt of their own with 2:25 left. Murray helps Arkansas State run it down the field and Grupe kicks a 51 yard field goal with 15 seconds left to win it 38-28.

Shootout in Jonesboro Falls in Memphis' Favor

JONESBORO, Ark. - More turnovers and more turmoil hit Arkansas State today as they fell to the Memphis Tigers 59-56 in a shootout good enough for the Big 12. But what could be worse is that more happened in the locker room after the game than on the field.

Logan Bonner got the start today for Arkansas State and he proves his worth right away as he goes 5 for 5 and 69 yards and a 28 yard touchdown to Roshauud Paul to start the game off 7-0. The Arkansas State defense also starts off well as they are able to force a three and out and punt back to the offense. Bonner continues to play great with his only incompletion coming from a dropped pass by Javan Hawes. They drive deep into Memphis territory but can't convert a third and short and Grupe MISSES a 29 yard field goal. It remains 7-0. Memphis take advantage with their running game and a couple of big passes that lead to a 2 yard touchdown run by Rodrigues Clark to tie it up 7-7. Arkansas State can't respond as two big drops by Corey Rucker and Paul force a 4th and long and the Red Wolves punt it away. Memphis responds immediately as Connor Adair hits Pop Williams for a 78 yard touchdown pass to make it 14-7.

Bonner continues to play near perfect and turns a couple of broken plays into big yardage and finishes off the drive with a 9 yard touchdown pass to Hawes to tie it back up 14-14. Memphis puts together a solid drive but then they fumble and it's recovered by Chester Kimbrough to give Arkansas State the ball back! After a decent drive, Bonner makes his first mistake trying to throw into coverage and it is intercepted by Sanchez Blake Jr. Unfortunately Bonner is hurt on the play as well and is helped off the field. Memphis takes advantage of the turnover and are able to drive down the field behind Adair who finishes the drive off with a 17 yard pass to Tahj Washington for a touchdown to make it 21-14. It's confirmed that Bonner is out for the rest of the game with a foot injury which means the ball is back in Hatcher's hands. Hatcher puts together a good drive but on a play Jalil Clemons comes in unblocked and Hatcher can't escape and is sacked to force a 3rd and long. But Hatcher is able to find Leroy Deshazor for 25 yards! Then he caps off the drive with a 3 yard touchdown pass to backup tight end T.W. Ayers to tie it up 21-21 right before half.

Memphis kicks off the half with a good drive but then stall out in Arkansas State territory and Daniel Hall hits a 47 yard field goal to make it 24-21. Hatcher is immediately intercepted by Gabriel Rogers and gives Memphis great field position. Adair then finds Javon Ivory for a 13 yard touchdown pass to make it 31-21 and this game is looking like the Paint Bucket Bowl of last year. Hatcher responds with throws of 21, 25, and a 28 yard touchdown pass to Deshazor to keep the game close 31-28. Arkansas State's defense however has not helped as they let Memphis waltz down the field and Adair finds Tyce Daniel for a 3 yard touchdown pass to make it 38-28. Hatcher makes it a shootout as he continues to make incredible plays with his feet to extend plays. He finishes the drive off with an 18 yard touchdown pass to Paul to make it 38-35. Once again Memphis makes their way down the field, and Adair finds Clark out of the backfield for a 10 yard touchdown pass to make it 45-35. At this point Arkansas State could become discouraged as the defense is not able to stop Memphis at all.

Hatcher is able to use his feet on a read option and get a big 37 yard gain, hits another two big passes and Marcel Murray runs it in for a 5 yard touchdown to make it 45-42. The defense needs to make a stop to give the offense a chance. The Red Wolves defense does just that and force a big three and out and give the offense an opportunity! And in true Red Wolves fashion they throw it away as Blake Jr jumps about ten feet in the air to get his second interception of the game. Memphis takes advantage again and Adair finds Clark for a 10 yard touchdown pass to make it 52-42. Hatcher responds driving down the field and Murray caps it off with a 1 yard touchdown to make it 52-49. Adair keeps throwing the ball over the field and caps it off with a 1 yard touchdown run of his own to make it 59-49. Hatcher is able to find Ryan Rose for 54 yards to set up Arkansas State, they finish off the drive with a 1 yard touchdown run by Dusty Parrish to make it 59-56. Memphis misses a 54 yard field goal with 19 seconds left to give Arkansas State a chance. Hatcher finds Hawes for a 48 yard gain but time expires and they can't win.

After the game, sources said there was a shouting match between offensive coordinator Kurtis Diaz and defensive coordinator Nick Paremski in the Arkansas State locker room. With two weeks off before their next game, can the Red Wolves find the will to keep this season going or is their too much turmoil in the locker room?

                              Arkansas State Recruiting Update

This year the Arkansas State Red Wolves have 24 scholarships to hand out. The two biggest areas of need are Wide Receiver, where they have 3 graduating players, and offensive line which will see all 5 starters graduate. Arkansas State has gained some prestige after a decent year last year finishing 8-4. This has given them a wider range of options to recruit from, including some of the top recruits.

We start at wide receiver with our profiling as we take a look at the WR Logan Holland (80). The wide receiver not only has blazing speed, but will also come into college with some of the best route running in the NCAA. He's ranked as the second best wide receiver and fifth in the nation! This would probably be one of the highest profile recruits that Arkansas State could ever get and one of the reasons is Logan Holland buying into Kurtis Diaz's offense. You can see his full profile below.

There are quite a few other recruits that the Red Wolves are looking at in this process. Last year, we talked about how Diaz likes big, physical lineman for his scheme and he's found an option in OT Adam Dobzinski (76). Dobzinski comes in at a whopping 6'7, 309 lbs which would be a great anchor on the left side of the line for Arkansas State. However, he is a 4-star recruit and the #6 tackle in the nation. The Red Wolves are fighting against top teams such as Oklahoma for this one.

A couple lower level recruits that the Red Wolves are looking at are 3-star recruits QB Matt Watkins (76) and HB Marcus Matthews (75). Both have great speed for their positions and Watkins has a pretty accurate arm already and could be a first year starter if the Red Wolves were to get him.

The final recruit we will look at is 3-star G Lonnie Rich (70). While not as polished of a blocker as a Dobzinski, Rich comes in at 6'6, 286 lbs, prototypical size for Diaz's offense. He could play inside or swing out to tackle but it may take him a couple years to progress to that point.

You can see a full list of scholarships offered below.

Texas and Oklahoma Looking to Leave Big 12

AUSTIN, Texas - During last week's "Game of the Week" between #1 Oklahoma and #2 Texas it came out that both teams were looking to move on from the Big 12. Both teams complained about a lack of a conference championship and a lack of competition outside of them. This started a whirlwind of rumors about possible realignment.

The biggest rumor to come out of this is that Texas and Oklahoma are looking to move to the SEC. Losing a total of four schools already, the Big 12 is in a tough position if Texas and Oklahoma move on. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby responded to the rumors, "We are unwavering in the belief that the Big 12 provides an outstanding platform for its members’ athletic and academic success. We will face the challenges head-on, and we have confidence that the Big 12 will continue to be a vibrant and successful entity in the near term and into the foreseeable future." So what does this mean for the future of the Big 12?

Struggling teams in the SEC such as Missouri and Vanderbilt have already expressed their disinterest in the idea of this super conference. They struggle to compete against the likes of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, and LSU especially in the recruiting process. It becomes much harder if you add Texas and Oklahoma to the mix. We could see Missouri try to make a move back to the Big 12.

There's also the current state of the Big 12 without Texas and Oklahoma. Teams such as Iowa State and Texas Tech have enjoyed recent success, but none as much as the ones leaving. West Virginia has had a rebound year under new Head Coach Blake Anderson, but a team like Kansas hasn't had success for a long time in the Big 12 and could look for new horizons.

Rumors are swirling about the Big 12 dying off or losing their status as a Power 5. Texas and Oklahoma may just be the dominoes that start the chain of the schools finding elsewhere. So how could the Big 12 survive? There are a number of schools that could look to move into the conference. Super G5 teams such as Boise State, who has been running the MWC for a long time now. Their rivals, San Diego State or even independent BYU could look to move back into a conference. It's possible we see Houston or SMU make the move to try to get more yearly rivalries with Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU again.

While there is a cavalcade of possibilities, nothing is for sure yet and we will find out more throughout the season, but we could be in store for a massive realignment.
