Big Second Half Propels Arkansas State to Big Victory

MONROE, La. - The Arkansas State Red Wolves were able to pick up a big victory over the winless UL-Monroe Warhawks on Saturday, 56-35. The defense came up big as it has been doing during this 5 game win streak and caused two turnovers both leading to scores.

The game would start off rough right away for the Warhawks as Isaiah Phillips would fumble and it would be recovered by Vidal Scott. This would lead to a one yard touchdown run by Marcel Murray to give Arkansas State the 7-0 lead. ULM would fight back and Ryan Levine would take a 39 yard run to the house to tie the game 7-7. Logan Bonner would drive the offense down the field and find Leroy Deshazor for a six yard touchdown pass to go up 14-7. It wouldn't last long however as the run defense would fail again and Isaiah Phillips would gash them for 65 yards to tie the game up at 14.

The second quarter would go smoother for Arkansas State. They would start off with Bonner completing a drive with a four yard touchdown run to make it 21-14. Antwon Fegans would then force Isaiah Phillips to fumble a second time and set up Murray for his second touchdown run to make it 28-14. The Red Wolves would get the ball back and this time Isaiah Azubuike would punch it in from two yards out to make it a commanding 35-14 lead. Unfortunately, Bonner would then fumble after being sacked by Demondre Harris and it is recovered by the Warhawks. This would lead to an 11 yard touchdown pass from Hunt to Donovan Hickman to make it 35-21. Before half, Bonner would throw an interception to Josh Newton but ULM would not have time to capitalize.

In the third quarter ULM would start to inch back. Blake Grupe would miss a 45 yard field goal and ULM would march down the field and Hunt would run it in from two yards out to close the gap 35-28. Isaiah Azubuike would respond with his second rushing touchdown to extend the lead 42-28.

The fourth quarter was all Red Wolves. Bonner would find Javan Hawes for a 34 yard touchdown to make it 49-28. On their next drive Azubuike would find the endzone a third time, this time through the air as Layne Hatcher would find him on a four yard pass to make it 56-28. Late in the game, Hunt would find Jahquan Bloomfield to cut it down to 56-35, but it would be too little too late for the Warhawks.

Hatcher Leads Arkansas State to Victory in Relief

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Arkansas State Red Wolves scored 17 unanswered points in the second half to score a close victory over Georgia State, 34-31. Both quarterbacks struggled in the contest, but the defense held strong against Georgia State to keep the offense in striking distance.

The game started off strong for Arkansas State as they would drive downfield and Logan Bonner would find Leroy Deshazor for a 10 yard touchdown pass to go up 7-0. On their next drive Bonner was intercepted by Courtney Williams. Josh Adkins would then find Cornelious McCoy for a 25 yard touchdown pass to tie it up 7-7.

In the second quarter the teams would start by trading field goals. Blake Grupe would hit a 35 yarder and Kelving Guerrero would hit a 28 yarder to keep it tied 10-10. Dusty Parrish would then punch in a touchdown from one yard out to make it 17-10 Arkansas State. Logan Bonner would be intercepted once again on the next offensive drive, this time by Jhi'Shawn Taylor. This would lead to a Destin Coates three yard touchdown to tie it up 17-17 before the half.

The third quarter started off rough for the Red Wolves as Georgia State would drive down and Adkins would find Terrance Dixon on a four yard pass for a touchdown to go up 24-17. On the ensuing drive, Logan Bonner would go down with an injury and be ruled out for the rest of the game. Layne Hatcher would come in and finish the drive off with a one yard touchdown run to tie it up 24-24. On his next drive, Hatcher would find Deshazor on 25 yard touchdown pass to take the 31-24 lead.

In the fourth, Hatcher would throw his first interception, which would be Courtney Williams' second of the day. The defense would hold them and Hatcher would drive Arkansas State down the field for a 30 yard field goal by Grupe to extend the lead 34-24. Georgia State would drive down and Coates would get his second touchdown of the day but it would be too little, too late for the Panthers and the Red Wolves would escape with a 34-31 win.

Arkansas State Falls Late In Turnover Plagued Game

Troy, Ala. - Arkansas State would fall to Troy, 45-42, despite a massive comeback by the Red Wolves. Unfortunately turnovers would once again be the problem for them as they would throw a combined five interceptions.

It would start early and often for Arkansas State as Logan Bonner would be intercepted right away by Terence Dunlap. This would lead to a one yard touchdown pass from Marvin Robinson to Marcus Rogers to make it 7-0. Bonner would get picked off again, this time by T.J. Harris. Robinson would then find Bret Clark for a 16 yard touchdown to make it 14-0. On their next drive, D.K. Billingsley would break a run off for 80 yards to put Troy up 21-0. On the ensuing Arkansas State drive, Bonner would go down with shin splints, and be taken out for the rest of the game. Layne Hatcher would come in and drive the down the field and run it in from three yards out to get the Red Wolves on the board, 21-7.

To start the second quarter, Troy would drive down and Jack Martin would kick a 27 yard field goal to make it 24-7. Hatcher would find Javan Hawes on a 59 yard touchdown pass to make it 24-14 and all of a sudden Arkansas State is back in it. Unfortunately on their next drive Hatcher would be picked off by Reddy Steward and it would lead to Robinson and Clark connecting for the second time on a one yard pass to make it 31-14. Hatcher would respond with a one yard touchdown pass to Roshauud Paul to make it 31-21 at the half.

The Red Wolves would kickoff the second half with Hatcher running in for a 16 yard touchdown to make it 31-28. After Troy missed a field goal, Arkansas State would have a chance to tie or take the lead. Hatcher would throw another interception, this one to O'Shai Fletcher. Robinson would then find Rogers again from five yards out to make it 38-28, and the air was sucked out of Arkansas State.

The defense stood strong to start the fourth and Arkansas State was able to drive and Marcel Murray punched in a four yard touchdown run to make it 38-35. After another stop, Hatcher ran one in from 13 to complete an improbable comeback to make it 42-38. The defense would falter however and Robinson would find Clark for a 40 yard touchdown pass to make it 45-42. With little time remaining, Hatcher would throw one deep and it would be intercepted by Fletcher once again and ice the game.

Tough loss against Troy there, but it's nice to see Arkansas State ranked. I'm sure Coach Diaz will have plenty of suitors if he wants a step-up this offseason.

Yeah we were doing good all season, but these last couple of games have been tough and we've fallen into old habits of turning the ball over (I'm starting to think I just suck at this game lol). This offseason will be an interesting one, cuz Diaz (in head canon) has spent his whole adult life at Arkansas State, but it's obvious that he has a prolific offense and could probably do big things at a bigger school if this is what he's doing at Arkansas State. We shall see as the season winds down!

Arkansas State Loses Their Second Straight

Lafayette, La. - Arkansas State fell in their second straight game for the first time this year. They probably had their worst offensive game of the year as they were only able to muster up 24 points against a Louisiana team that ranked 20th in scoring defense coming into the game and 25th in turnover differential. The Ragin' Cajuns would go on to win 36-24.

On the first offensive play of the game, Logan Bonner fumbled and it was recovered by Jourdan Quibodeaux. This would lead to Jaxon Smith-Njigba getting a 32 yard pass from Brady McDougal. Nate Snyder missed the extra point making it 6-0. Chris Smith would follow it up with a four yard touchdown run to make it 13-0.

The second quarter wouldn't be much better for Arkansas State as they would start off with a 48 yard missed field goal by Grupe. Their defense stood tall for the quarter and it would end with Bonner finding Corey Rucker for a 14 yard touchdown to make it 13-7 at half.

Arkansas State would finally turn things around as Marcel Murray would carry it for an eight yard touchdown to make it 17-13. Louisiana didn't let it last long however as Johnny Lumpkin would catch a 22 yard touchdown pass from McDougal to take the lead 20-17. Jamal Bell would follow it up with a 32 yard touchdown grab of his own from McDougal. Snyder would miss his second extra point and it would be 26-17.

The fourth quarter was the roughest. Bonner would throw an interception to A.J. Washington leading to a 31 yard field goal by Snyder to make it 29-17. Bonner would throw a second interception to Percy Butler. Nothing would come of that one and Arkansas State would have another chance. Bonner would find Ryan Rose for a six yard touchdown pass to inch closer 29-24.
Chris Smith would get his second rushing touchdown to make it 36-24 late and Bonner would throw his third interception to Bralen Trahan to ice the game for Louisiana.

                          Louisiana 36, Arkansas State 24
