    2021 Draft - Day 1

The 2021 NFL Draft, Day One

Cleveland, OH - The first night of the draft is in the books. Five quarterbacks were taken in the top 10, none in the remaining 22 picks. Carolina traded up one spot to take Justin Fields, while the Bears moved up 9 to grab Mac Jones. New England moved up a spot to snag Jaylen Waddle, while the Cowboys patiently waited as the top CB drops to them at #20.

Washington Draft Recap - Day One

Washington had its eyes set on drafting Florida's Kyle Pitts but the talented TE went off the board at 5. With four QBs off the board by the 10th-pick, Coach Penn wasn't interested in taking the 5th one in Mac Jones, due to his hatred of starting rookie QBs. Instead, Sonny Weaver found Jones' new home in Chicago and made a deal that dropped the Football Team 9 spots down in the first and accumulated more draft capital for this year and next. At #19, the team went offensive for its first pick of the draft.

1.19 - WR Kadarius Toney, Florida
Toney is extremely shifty and athletic. He broke out in 2020 and became the top target of Heisman candidate Kyle Trask. With McLaurin and Samuel already in town, Toney will be able to feast over the middle of the field. The team may have another needs but Toney is one of the top receivers left on the board and gives Mindshew another outstanding target to throw to.

      2021 Draft - Day 2

      Day Two Highlights

Rounds 2 and 3 Notable Picks

2.33 Cardinals (from JAX) - RB Travis Etienne, Clemson
2.40 Broncos - RB Najee Harris, Alabama
2.45 Chargers - OG Alex Leatherwood, Alabama
2.49 Raiders - TE Patrick Friermuth, Penn State
2.53 Cowboys - WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, USC
3.67 Roughnecks - WR Randale Moore, Purdue
3.84 Patriots (from PHI) - QB Jamie Newman, Wake Forest
      3.89 Lions - S Andre Cisco, Syracuse

Washington Draft Recap - Day Two

Washington entered the second day of the draft with three picks thanks to a trade back with the Bears yesterday. The team would end up dealing a 5th-rounder, along its earlier of two 2nds, to the Panthers to move up from the 10th selection in round two and grabbing who Sonny Weaver Jr hopes is the team's potential quarterback of the future, if the Minshew experiment fails.

2.39 - QB Kyle Trask, Florida
The team double dips with Florida players to start the draft. Trask isn't 100% day one ready but he gives Coach Penn a player to develop for his system. The Heisman-finalist will slot in behind Gardner Minshew and Tyler Huntley and, being a 2nd-round pick, is in no rush to see the field.

2.50 - LB Dylan Moses, Alabama
Moses draft stock fell after a down 2020 season, but it was later revealed he was playing through a knee injury. He got surgery in February and Washington may have gotten the steal of the draft if he recovers 100% and returns to his 1st-round form.

3.74 - CB Eric Stokes, Georgia
Dubbed the 'fastest CB in college football', Stokes turned heads with an unofficial 4.25 40 at his pro day, another fast time in the fastest pre-draft evaluation season in NFL history, mostly thanks to no NFL Combine and some 'inflated' numbers by the college teams. Nevertheless, Stokes plays fast on the field and Washington pounced on him after he slipped into the 3rd.

      Day Three Preview

        2021 Draft - Day 3

        Day Three Highlights

4.113 - EDGE Joshua Kaindoh, Florida State
Washington rolls the dice on another injured lineback, this time on pass rush specialist Joshua Kaindoh. He was one of the best pass rushing prospects to come out of high school but a leg injury ended his career at FSU. The team hopes he can continue his rehab and with a stable of top-notch pass rushers ahead of him there is no rush from him to see the field.

        6.177 - S/LB JaCoby Stevens, LSU
Coaches rave about his leadership and he has a chance to make the team on special teams. A similar player to Khaleke Hudson, Stevens seems destined to be a sub-package guy.

7.202 - TE Kenny Yeboah, Ole Miss
One of the top athletes at the position, Yeboah brings speed to the table, much like Kyle Pitts, that will leave linebackers in the dust. With only Logan Thomas on the roster, Yeboah should make the 53-man squad.

7.209 - RB Pooka Williams Jr, Kansas
Williams has a tough road ahead of him to make the final cut, with a loaded RB room, but his versatility and playmaking ability might land him a return role on special teams.

        Washington Draft Selections

        Undrafted Free Agent Signings

        QB KJ Costello
        WR Simi Fehoko
        TE Chase Allen
        C Baveon Johnson
        CB Jalyn Armour-Davis

          Players On The Move

          Cooks Heads To KC

Houston, TX - Houston trades WR Brandin Cooks to the Chiefs in exchange for a 2022 3rd, a 2023 5th, and 2023 6th. Cooks become expendable after the team drafted four receivers in the draft, as well as reuniting PJ Walker with Cam Phillips, who had great chemistry during their short run in the XFL. The Roughnecks are also entering a clear rebuilding phase with the suspension of Watson and organizational restructuring.

For Cooks, he once again is on the move and could not have found himself in a better situation than Kansas City. He joins a Chiefs team that went to back-to-back Super Bowls and is favored to go to a third. The dangerous duo of Hill and Cooks represents the best 1-2 punch Mahomes will have to throw to yet.

          Pittsburgh Rolls Dice On Darnold

Pittsburgh, PA - Sam Darnold has been traded to the Steelers for a 2022 3rd and 2023 4th. The Jets also sent a 2022 5th back to Steelers in the deal. A day before the 5th-year option deadline, Pittsburgh made the move for the young signal caller and immediately exercised the option meaning that Darnold now has two years left on his rookie contract, with the 2nd-year set to cost $18.8M.

The move represents another attempt by the Steelers to find Big Ben's replacement. Dwayne Haskins, who was released by the Football Team last season, signed a 1-year deal with the team earlier this offseason. Heading into training camp this season the team now has Haskins, Mason Rudolph, and Sam Darnold as potential QBs in waiting. For Roethlisberger, 2021 is looking more and more like his final year. If he doesn't retire at the end of the season he'll likely need to find work elsewhere with Darnold's salary escalation.

          Washington Is Coming Home

Landover, MD - The Washington Football Team announced plans to build its new stadium in the site of its former one, as the team will move back to D.C. with the reimagining of the RFK Stadium. The current stadium, which is schedule to be demolished this year, will be modernized in an attempt to bring a world-class stadium to the heart of DC. Not only will the stadium rival ones recently built around the league, but it will rival ones built around the world with its goal of making DC not only the capital of America, but the sporting capital of the world.

Construction is expected to take between 18 and 24 months, putting its completion in the middle of the 2022 season, at the earliest. Washington will need to figure a way out of its current lease at FedEx field, which doesn't expire until 2027, before the 2023 season.

            July 2021

Ashburn, VA - The Football Team entered training camp with six quarterbacks on the roster. Tyler Huntley and Cole McDonald returned from last season, JT Barrett signed during Free Agency, Gardner Minshew was acquired via trade in early April, Kyle Trask, who was selected in round 2 of the draft, and undrafted free agent KJ Costello.

The QB room might be crowded now, but realistically it's a 4-way competition for the #3 spot. Minshew, the expected starter, will only have competition from rookie Kyle Trask, though after camp Minshew sits comfortably atop the depth chart. Trask will have a chance to prove himself in the preseason, but he's likely playing for the backup spot against whomever comes out ahead between Barrett, Huntley, McDonald, and Costello. Early indications point it to being a two-horse race between Huntley and Costello for the final spot.

Minshew goes with #16 for his Washington debut. He was the first QB since Ryan Leaf to wear that number at Washington State.

              Roughriders Take The Field

                    Week 1, 2021

                    Washington (1-0) Rolls Eagles (0-1)

Philadelphia, PA - The Football team went into Lincoln Financial Field and roughed up the eagles for a 44-9 opening weekend win. Gardner Minshew was hyper-efficient, completing 71% of his passes (20/28) for 278 yards and 2 scores. Lynn Bowden Jr, who played all of his rookie season as a receiver, had lead back duties due to injuries and rushed 23 times for 112 yards. McLaurin paced all receivers with 6 catches for 74 yards and a 4th-quarter score.

The offense may have been solid in the win, but the defense was suffocating. DC Anthony Weaver, signed this offseason, called a stellar game as his guys collected 7 sacks on the day and scored two defensive touchdowns off of fumbles. Washington, with a capable defensive play caller, suddenly looks like a team to keep an eye on.

                    Roughnecks (1-0) Top Colts (0-1)

Indianapolis, IN - The Roughnecks went through a tumultuous offseason, feature an ownership change and full rebranding of the team, but was able to band together for a surprise Week 1 win over Indianapolis. PJ Walker went 0-8 in the first quarter before going lights out the rest of the day, finishing with over 400-yards passing and 4 touchdowns. A year removed from the XFL, the duo of Walker and Cam Phillips showed no rust as the two combined for 201 yards and 2 scores, with Phillips making two highlight-reel touchdown grabs.

Houston fans went into the season with low expectations for the rebuilding team, justifiably so, and will probably endure a long year, but at least for one week they can savor their team being undefeated, however short-lived it may be.

                      Washington (2-0) Surprises Chiefs (0-2)

Landover, MD - Kansas City's bid for a third-straight Super Bowl appearance has gotten off to a rough start in 2021 with back-to-back tough losses to open the year. Patrick Mahomes was his usual deadly self, completing an unbelievable 88.8% of his passes and tossing 3 scores in the game. Unfortunately for him, to key turnovers, one by air and the other on a strip sack, were the difference makers today.

Gardner Minshew got his second win as the starting QB for the Football Team by doing what he was brought in to do, manage Coach Penn's offense. He's done that well through two weeks, this time going 17 for 24 for 201 yards and a touchdown. The player of the game goes to Lynn Bowden Jr, who continues to fill in for the injured Peyton Barber and Zack Moss. Bowden got 24 carries and turned them into 197 yards, including an 84-yard score early in the first half. He's exceeded expectations through two weeks and may have earned himself a large share of rushing touches even when Moss makes his return.

                      Jaguars (1-1) Outlast Houston (1-1)

Houston, TX - #1 overall selection Trevor Lawrence got off to a rough start before bouncing back for his first career win. The former Clemson star had an efficient day, completing 20 of 27 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown. On the other side of the field, PJ Walker did his best to keep his team in it, out-playing the rookie to the tune of 358 yards passing, two passing scores, and an additional 87 yards on the ground with another score. However, it just wasn't enough this week.

The team also lost Mark Ingram to an ankle injury that might land the veteran on the IR with him slated to miss the next 8 weeks. With David Johnson already on the IR with an ankle injury, and rookie Chuba Hubbard out with a broken toe, the running back room has been whittled down to WR turned RB Cordarrelle Patterson and former Jet Elijah McGuire. The team may need to look into FA or the trade market to fill the void at starting RB.

Fields Gets First Win On TNF

Landover, MD - Justin Fields got his first start, and first win, as his Panthers (1-2) beat up the Football Team (2-1) on national TV. Washington was shut out for most of the game until garbage time let the team make it look a lot closer than it really was. Justin Fields looked ever bit as advertised, completing a 17 of 21 passes for 211 yards and 2 touchdowns. On the other side, Minshew threw 270 yards with two scores and a pick, while also being sacked 8 times, rattling the 3rd-year player early in the game. He calmed down late and was able to pad his stats in the final minutes.

The Washington defense looked strong for most of the game, limiting MCaffrey to 95 yards on 31 carries. The unit did a good job controlling the dangerous back and held him to 3.1 yards per touch. What the defense couldn't control were Minshew's turnovers. He added three fumbles to his pick, two of them being inside Washington territory. Short fields gave way to most of Carolina's points. DC Anthony Weaver has done an outstanding job threw three weeks now, even with the offenses mistakes his unit still ranks 2nd-overall in the league in total defense.

                        Roughnecks (2-1) Outrace Browns (0-3)

Houston, TX - PJ Walker is generating early season MVP buzz after a huge performance against Cleveland after his 5-touchdown effort. He put his team ahead 28-0 in the first quarter before Mayfield and company made it a 28-20 game at the half. Walker would keep the pedal down and rush for two second-half touchdowns to put the game out of reach. His combined 300 yards and 5 scores has led to him emerging as one of the top dual-threats this season.

Things weren't all sunny for the Roughnecks, as Walker was taken down 6 times. He's been sacked a total of 16 times through just 3 games, due to a combination of holding it too long and a porous front five. The team will need to improve its pass protection if he wants to survive the season. The team will also need to improve defensively, as its given up the second-most points in the league. If Houston has dreams of making the playoffs then it must stop every game from turning into a shootout.

Wow, this is some impressive graphical work and weaving of storylines from real life and various sports movies. I'm onboard with Coach Penn and Sonny Weaver Jr (it wasn't a great movie, but it was fine and I like Kevin Costner and Dennis Leary, lol), and I like what you've done with the team (that injection of beautiful Florida talent is always welcome).

Not sure if Minshew is a long-term solution, I believe in Trask, but letting him marinate a little on the bench won't be a bad thing. Hopefully he's excelling in practice.

Not sure if Minshew is a long-term solution, I believe in Trask, but letting him marinate a little on the bench won't be a bad thing. Hopefully he's excelling in practice.
Thank! As for Minshew, he's been solid but is strictly a game manager. If he doesn't turn it over too much he can get you the win, but can't lean on him too much.

Trask has got a much better arm, though there's no rush to get him on to the field just yet, Minshew still the best QB to run the offense.

Football Team (3-1) Dominates Chargers (2-2)

Landover, MD - It may not look like it at first glance, but this game was all Washington from kickoff. Gardner Minshew had a clean day, competing 14 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a score. Lynn Bowden continues to look like a bona fide star, this week cashing in 25 touches for 138 yards and a hat-trick, the longest touchdown coming in at 71 yards. Curtis Samuel joined in on the fun as well, scoring his first touchdown on 44-yard bomb when he got behind the safeties.

For Chargers, Herbert and the offense were outmatched by the Football Team defense. They were only held to 50 yards rushing, and of Herbert's 330 yards passing, 200 of them came in the final quarter. Washington had a 30-7 lead early in the final frame before the Chargers 15-point garbage-time rally.

The win puts Washington solely atop the NFC East, a game ahead of the 2-2 Cowboys.

                              Roughnecks (3-1) Slowed, Not Stopped

Foxborough, MA - The Patriots (1-3) and Bill Belichick looked to have the Houston offense figured out, limiting it to just 10 points through the first three quarters until PJ Walker led back-to-back scoring drives to retake the lead late. Cam Newton did lead a final drive down into field goal range but Aldrick Rosas missed a potential 49-yard game-winner, sending the kick inches outside the right upright. A disappointing end to Cam's best outing of the season, and New England fans are starting to worry the big offseason spending hasn't changed much from a year ago.

For the Roughnecks, the win keeps the team in at the top of the AFC South, along with the Jaguars and Titans. Houston is exceeding expectations this year but has a lot left to prove if it wants to be labeled as a contender.

                                Washington (4-1) Keeps Rolling

East Rutherford, NJ - The Giants (1-4) put up a fight, but were no match for a Washington defense that kept the pressure coming early and often. Daniel Jones was sacked 8 time, 8 times, in the loss. Jadeveon Clowney had 3.5 on the day, with Young, Holcomb, Sweat, Ioannidis, and Payne joining in on the fun. This Washington defense is legit, and it's going to take this team places.

On offense, Minshew had another Minshew outing, completing 76% of his passes for 149 yards and a score. Lynn Bowden Jr. continues to impress, this week with 147 yards rushing and 2 scores. A fumble represented a lone mistake on an otherwise stellar outing. Rookie Karius Toney led the team in receiving. Minshew doesn't pass much, but as of late he's favored the rookie out of the slot.

                                Houston (4-1) Makes Statement

Phoenix, AZ - It might be time to start taking this Roughnecks team seriously after its win over the Cardinals (3-2). For the first time this season the defense showed it can slow an offense down, and it did so against one of the more dangerous units in the league. The team also faced a JJ Watt-less defense as the former Houston player sat out with a knee injury. Nevertheless, a big win for the Roughnecks.

Speaking of the big win, no one player this season has been as instrumental to his team's success than PJ Walker. He once again came to ball, throwing a touchdown and adding another on the ground. His combined 400 yards has made him a headache for DCs around the league. And even though he threw two picks, one being effective a punt on a 3rd and long heave downfield, the other a final minutes pick-6 with the game out of reach, he has yet to be rattled. He's still getting sacked too much, 6 times in this contest, but if that can be fixed then there might be no stopping Walker.
