GATOR TALES EPISODE 1
Welcome to Gator Tales the #1 rated Florida Gators Podcast.. I am you host Sean Kelly and today I am joined by 1st Year Head Coach Clayton Dees.
SK- Coach Dees thanks for coming on the show tonight.. It's bee a exciting season so far.. You guy's are coming off a big win over Georgia Tech and now find your ranked in the Top-25 at #20 going into Week 9's matchup with #5 Miami. How are you feeling so far?
CD- Thanks for having me Sean.. Yeah it's been a great start to the year, and I am excited that the Media is finally taking notice and put us in the Top-25, But starting next week it won't really matter cause the only thing we concern ourselves after Week 10 is the College Football Playoff Rankings.. Obviously a win over Miami this week would be huge in helping us debut in a Top-15 maybe even Top-12 spot.
SK-Coach you seem to have a history of starting strong.. You led Jacksonville State to a Sun Belt title and a playoff appearance in your 1st and only season with the Gamecocks.. Do you think you can do the same here?
CD- I don't know Sean.. We got some very tough opponents left Miami and FIU on the road are no joke and Georgia/Clemson/FSU at home are all tough games. Honestly at this point I would be pretty excited just to go 3-2 over the next 5 games and get to 9 wins.
SK-Florida has only been to 2 Bowl games in the past 6 years and only won one of them (2034 Texas Bowl) I would say 9 wins and a Bowl victory would be a great building block to start your career with, but the way your playing I feel like this team is destine for something bigger... Coach not only was Week 8 a big week in the Rankings for you but you also just landed 2 key additions to the 2037 class.
CD-Yeah the Staff and I are very excited to bring in another 5* Recruit in WR Robert Martino (#26 Overall/#2 FL/#6 WR) from Jacksonville FL and we got 4* QB Terrelle Mohamed (#191 Overall/#6 AL/19 QB).
SK-Coach With Mohammed signed what's your plan for the other QB's on your target list? Also reports are you lost out on several guys this past week can you share with the listeners who those guy's were as well..
CD-We still got 3 QB's on our radar but we believe Antoine Traore could very well make a move to RB and we also believe that should Mike Apple stay with us next season that he could transition to WR and potentially be one of our Top-3 guy's next spring.. So we could continue to push to bring in both Goldberg and Hillman cause we really like what we see from both of them on film and in our scouting reports (Both are Green Star Gems).. As far as the guy's who signed else where we lost 3 guy's off our Big Board this week.
4* TE Levi Rawls (#374 Overall/#35 FL/#18 TE)
4* DT CJ Cooke (#451 Overall/#45 FL/#22 DT)
4* DE Greg Leamon (#122 Overall/#5 PA/#9 DE)
SK- Coach that's the 2nd recruit you lost to FIU this season.. You have stated you want to keep Florida kids here in Florida.. How long do you think it will take before kids start seeing the Gators as a National Contender and you start winning those recruiting battle with FIU and Miami?
CD-Well I think Step #1 is beating those teams on the field. Once we do that then we can start showing them we are more then just a school living off our reputation from the past.
SK-Coach just a couple more Questions.. How surprised are you that RB Adrian Burden isn't in the Heisman discussion.. He leads the nation in rushing with 991 yds and his 7 TD's has him tied for the Top-10. Also how does it feel to see FIU QB Faitele Lutui #1 in the voting. You played a big role in recruiting him and helping him develop well at FIU.
CD-I won't lie I am a little shocked.. His 991 is 283 yds more then Ohio State's Ja'Quan Britton and his 7 TD's tie him with Britton.. Right now A.B. is the heart and soul of our Offense.. Without him there is no way we would be 6-1 this season. I think there is still plenty of time for voters to start taking notice but it's odd to me that after having Cameron McCracken win back to back year's we don't have a single RB even in the Top-5 voting right now. To be honest though I am super pumped for Lutui. We have a very similar story.. When I got to FIU I had a really good QB in front of me in Keyone Jenkins and I had to wait my turn and Coach Miller made me earn that #1 role. Faitele had to do the same sitting behind K.P and actually spent most of the those years as the #3 running the scout team. I think going up against the Panther Defense was a huge reason why he was ready when his time came.
SK-Well Coach we are out of time. It was great having you on the show and looking forward to Episode #2.
CD-Thanks Sean, looking forward to it too
