JC Hoag Punches In Walk Off 2PT Conversion To Cap Wild Finish

Syracuse just needed the PAT to tie the game at 45 and head to overtime, but instead HC Nash Savage called the HB Direct Snap and JC Hoag wiggled between two Seminole defenders for the walk-off 2PT conversion.

LEFT - Freshman CB Trent Whimper starting down Williams as he takes the INT back for the go-ahead touchdown with 7:59 remaining in the 4th Q.
LEFT CENTER - Kam Davis only carried the ball 9 times in the matchup, but got the call on with 1:37 left and delivered a 21 yard go-ahead touchdown.
RIGHT CENTER - Spencer Vernon is quickly becoming the go-to target for the Orange, seen above hauling in his 3rd TD pass of the day with zeros on the clock to give Syracuse the option to play for OT or go for 2.
RIGHT - Trever Jackson played his best football in the 2nd half, going 13/14 for 230 yards and two touchdowns while adding a 9 yard scramble as FSU gave the Orange all they could handle.

Tallahassee, FL. - In a game filled with momentum swings and dramatic moments, #17 Syracuse pulled off a stunning 46-45 victory over Florida State, capped by a gutsy two-point conversion call from head coach Nash Savage with no time left on the clock.

Syracuse came out strong, taking an early 14-7 lead in the first quarter behind a 4-yard rushing touchdown from Jakhari Williams and a 12-yard touchdown reception by Spencer Vernon. Florida State struck back with a 59-yard bomb from Trever Jackson to David Guy, but the Orange controlled the first half, extending their lead to 24-10 at the break thanks to another Williams rushing score and a 25-yard field goal by Desmond Brewer.

The second half, however, turned into a shootout. Florida State’s Trever Jackson led a furious comeback, throwing an 81-yard touchdown to Lawayne McCoy and a 63-yard strike to Cameron Frier, cutting Syracuse’s lead to 31-24 heading into the fourth quarter.

The final frame was nothing short of madness. A costly fumble by Syracuse running back JC Hoag at midfield set up Florida State’s game-tying touchdown—a 9-yard keeper by Jackson. On the next possession, Williams made his first major mistake of the night, throwing a pick-six to Trent Whimper, giving the Seminoles their first lead of the game at 38-31.

Williams, unfazed by the setback, responded with a clutch 9-play, 69-yard drive, completing all five of his pass attempts before scrambling for 11 yards to set up Phil Hutton’s 2-yard jet sweep touchdown. The game was tied at 38, but Florida State answered immediately, marching down the field in eight plays before Kam Davis broke free for a 21-yard touchdown with just 1:42 remaining, putting the Seminoles back on top, 45-38.

With time running out, Williams orchestrated a 10-play, 77-yard drive, going 6-for-8 through the air, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Vernon as the clock hit zero. The drive nearly ended two plays earlier when Williams was sacked for a 10-yard loss and fumbled, but he managed to recover his own mistake to keep the Orange alive.

Down 45-44 with the extra point pending, Coach Nash Savage made the boldest call of his tenure—going for two and the win. The play? A direct snap to JC Hoag, who powered his way between two Seminole defenders and stretched into the end zone for the game-winning conversion, silencing the crowd at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Syracuse quarterback Jakhari Williams delivered a gutsy performance, bouncing back from a costly fourth-quarter pick-six to finish 28-of-41 for 356 yards, three passing touchdowns, and two rushing scores. Spencer Vernon continued his Heisman-worthy campaign with 117 receiving yards, 61 rushing yards, and three total touchdowns. JC Hoag overcame a crucial third-quarter fumble to deliver the game-winning two-point conversion and added 137 rushing yards on the night. For Florida State, Trever Jackson was electric, throwing for 381 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another.

Syracuse remains undefeated at 5-0 and will return home next week to face another ACC challenge with Wake Forest visiting the JMA Dome. Meanwhile, head coach Nash Savage’s former team, Ball State, continued its dominance in the MAC, dismantling Western Michigan 56-7. On the recruiting front, the Orange’s thrilling victory in Tallahassee paid off immediately, as 4-star wide receiver Roy McCleon (#296 overall) announced his commitment to Syracuse, adding another playmaker to Savage’s growing roster. With momentum building on and off the field, the Orange have officially arrived as a national contender—and they proved it with a fearless, last-second win in Tallahassee.

CRC Begins Evaluating Conference Realignment For 2030 Season

Indianapolis, IN. - The Conference Realignment Contingent (CRC) has officially begun assessing potential conference shifts for the 2030 NCAA football season, according to a statement released this week to the Associated Press. The CRC, established after the 2024 season to restore regional conference alignments following the "Super Conference" experiment, conducts evaluations every five years, allowing teams and conferences to submit realignment requests.

Ball State is among the programs seeking a move to a Power Five conference. Athletic Director Jeff Mitchell previously affirmed the school's commitment to pursuing an opportunity at the highest level of competition.

However, Ball State was not the first to make such a request.

"USC and UCLA both submitted their requests the day after the CRC announced the original realignment," an anonymous source familiar with the process told reporters. "Not only did they submit the first request immediately, but they have continued to file requests at the end of each season since."

In addition to Ball State and the Los Angeles-based programs, Texas A&M has requested to return to the SEC, while Tulane and Marshall are also seeking realignment opportunities.

CRC Chairman Mark Emmert emphasized that discussions are still in the early stages.

"We have yet to make any concrete decisions," Emmert stated. "We're just beginning preliminary discussions."

Speculation has emerged regarding potential conference placements. Many believe Ball State is more likely to join the Big 12 rather than the Big Ten due to the latter's already strong Indiana representation and the lack of a viable team to be relegated to the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Some theorists suggest both Ball State and Notre Dame could join the Big Ten but in separate divisions to maintain conference balance.

If Ball State moves to the Big 12, the CRC would need to adjust the conference structure. One option would be granting Texas A&M's request to return to the SEC, allowing Arkansas to shift into the Big 12 South while Ball State joins the North. Another possibility involves Oklahoma State facing relegation due to its struggles in recent seasons, with Arkansas still making the divisional shift.
USC and UCLA’s proposed return to the Pac-12 remains a topic of debate. While USC has a strong case, UCLA has struggled in the Mountain West Conference (MWC). However, many believe USC will push for UCLA’s inclusion to preserve their historic rivalry. If both teams move, BYU and Colorado could face relegation back to the MWC due to their inconsistent performances in the Pac-12.

Meanwhile, Marshall and Tulane stand to benefit from Ball State’s departure. Marshall is a likely candidate to replace Ball State in the MAC, while Tulane could secure a Power Five spot if Texas A&M moves to the SEC, which might require an additional team’s demotion or another program’s inclusion.

The outcome of the 2028 season will likely influence the CRC's decisions, with teams looking to strengthen their case through on-field performance. The CRC is expected to announce a finalized realignment proposal before the 2029 season, with the changes set to take effect for the 2030 campaign.

We've still got Miami and Maryland on the road in two of the last three games of the season, with how they're performing the "Atlantic" division could come down to those games

'Cuse Moves To 6-0 Despite Sloppy Offensive Performance

Bradley Land got burnt for a 58 yard TD on the corner route earlier in the 4th quarter, but shame on Paul Talib for trying it again as the SR CB made him pay with the game sealing INT.

LEFT - After a 7 play drive had the Orange threatening on their opening drive, CB Devin Cook flipped the script with his 87 yard pick six after snatching the ball from Jaylan Hornsby
CENTER - Jason Veasy LOVES playing in the Dome, recording another sack to go with 5 TFLs as the Cuse defensive line lived in the Deacons backfield.
RIGHT - Tavin Slayton got free on the corner route then left S Taylor Colman grasping for air on the juke before ending in the endzone with a 58 yard TD to give the Deacons life in the 4ht Q.

Syracuse, NY. - Despite a sloppy performance filled with penalties, turnovers, and failed fourth-down conversions, No. 12 Syracuse remained undefeated with a 31-14 victory over Wake Forest at the JMA Dome on Saturday.

Syracuse opened the game with a promising seven-play drive, but quarterback Jakhari Williams’ pass was intercepted by Wake Forest’s Devin Cook and returned 87 yards for a touchdown, giving the Demon Deacons a surprising 7-0 lead.

The Orange responded with a 16-play drive but were stopped on fourth-and-one at the Wake Forest three-yard line when Williams was stuffed on a read-option play. The Demon Deacons’ offense finally took the field with under three minutes remaining in the first quarter but managed just four total yards in the opening period. Despite dominating with 165 total yards, Syracuse trailed 7-0 due to costly red-zone turnovers.

Syracuse bounced back in the second quarter, scoring twice with rushing touchdowns from Williams (12 yards) and JC Hoag (7 yards). The Orange put up 143 total yards in the period but missed another scoring opportunity just before halftime. Facing a fourth-and-two from the Wake Forest 13-yard line with 39 seconds left, head coach Nash Savage opted to go for it instead of kicking a field goal. Williams’ pass fell incomplete, keeping the halftime score at 14-7.

The Orange extended their lead on the opening drive of the second half, as Spencer Vernon powered in a one-yard touchdown run. The period was largely defined by defense, with both quarterbacks throwing interceptions in a back-and-forth sequence.

Syracuse put together a methodical 16-play drive spanning the third and fourth quarters, chewing over five minutes off the clock before settling for a Desmond Brewer 27-yard field goal to push the lead to 24-7.

Wake Forest answered with a 58-yard touchdown pass from Paul Talib to Tavin Slayton, who made a sharp cut to evade safety Taylor Colman on his way to the end zone. With momentum shifting, Syracuse responded by grinding out six straight rushing plays before catching the Wake Forest defense off guard. Williams connected with Ja’Meer Thomas for a 25-yard touchdown, sealing the game at 31-14.

Talib attempted another deep corner route on the ensuing drive, but Syracuse cornerback Bradley Land read it perfectly and intercepted the pass, allowing the Orange to run out the clock.

Despite his struggles through the air, Jakhari Williams played a pivotal role in the Syracuse offense, finishing 10-of-21 for 211 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. However, he made up for it with his legs, rushing for 138 yards and a touchdown. Freshman running back JC Hoag continued his impressive debut season, leading the ground attack with 134 yards and a touchdown of his own. On the defensive side, another standout freshman, defensive end Jason Veasy, dominated the line of scrimmage, recording five tackles for loss and a sack.

However, Syracuse’s performance was marred by undisciplined play, as the team committed 11 penalties for 105 yards. Combined with multiple turnovers and failed fourth-down attempts, it was a frustratingly sloppy game for Coach Savage, who called it “arguably the sloppiest game” of his tenure.

Even with their struggles on the field, Syracuse continued its dominance on the recruiting trail, securing commitments from four key prospects. The biggest name to join the fold was five-star offensive tackle Antwaun Loudermilk, the No. 7 overall prospect and a New York native who chose to stay home. Five-star running back Lee Browner, ranked No. 30 nationally, added another explosive playmaker to the Orange’s backfield. Wide receiver Spencer Everett, the No. 41 overall prospect out of Mississippi, also committed, giving Syracuse another weapon in the passing game. Rounding out the group was guard Bruce Wheat, a four-star lineman from Massachusetts.

However, not all recruiting battles went in Syracuse’s favor. Five-star wide receiver AJ Yeast, ranked No. 25 overall, opted to commit to Miami instead. Coach Savage attempted to sell the Florida native on the chance to win championships in Syracuse, but Yeast, a family-oriented player, ultimately decided to stay closer to home.

Syracuse remains undefeated but will need to clean up its mistakes as they prepare for rival Pittsburgh to invade the JMA Dome. Meanwhile, Coach Savage’s former team, Ball State, continued its dominance in the MAC with a 63-17 rout of Bowling Green.

I think I said this before, apologies if I did, but the level of depth to this journal is inspiring to me in mine. You're game notes for Pitt included all of their results thus far in the season for instance. Very cool you're doing a 'Cuse journal and you've done really well with them so far. One of my favorite journals you've done so far.

Totally agree.. There are some great threads to read and follow on here, but this offers so much depth beyond just Coach Savage and the Orange...

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. I keep trying new things here and there to add different depth to the college football landscape outside of just Savage and Syracuse/Ball State, while still not spending all day writing updates. I've gotten pretty fortunate lately, I do construction sales for a building supply in my area and this is our slow season (think like 10 customers a day) so I take screen shots of the various reports I want to write and work on them at work to make myself look busy lol

I'm really enjoying the Orange and while I intended them to be a "pitstop" of sorts before the "elite job", I'm divided on it now. I've played with the idea of controlling three teams so I can keep doing Syracuse, but that seems like too much at one point. So we'll see where it goes, but the Orange have definitely made me pause on the whole "SEC or bust" thinking I had.

I am glad your enjoying your time with the Orange. Where does the ACC rank among conferences with your Dynasty.. With all the changes, I assume SEC is still #1 and Big Ten #2, but how does it compare to your version of the Pac-12 and Big 12. Right now in mine they are #3. My current version of the Pac-12/16 isn't gaining much traction.

                            #1 SEC A+ #2 ACC A #3 Big Ten A- #4 Big 12 B+ #5 Pac-12 B then Independents, CUSA, MWC, AAC, SBC, then finally MAC

I think the down year last year from Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State hurt the Big Ten while Clemson, Miami, and South Carolina all made the playoff last year. No Big 10 team last year and only one Big 12 team (KState). One AAC team and two CUSA teams made it over any Big 10, tells you have rough they were last year. But Iowa, Michigan, Cincinnati, and Penn State are all 5-2 or better so far so they've rebounded. Depending on how the ACC finishes I can see them taking back #2 this year

                              The 'Cuse Crushers' Dominate Pitt

The Daily Orange coined the moniker 'Cuse Crushers', thanks to the defenses penchant for getting after the QB this season, and they lived up to their namesake with 7 sacks against rival Pitt.

LEFT - Your weekly reminder that just three months ago this guy was the 4th string QB and debating entering the portal. Now? He's one of the premier weapons on the hottest team in the nation after racking up another 169 yards and two touchdowns.
CENTER - The lone highlight from this lopsided rivalry matchup was Kam Dunvernay's 4th Q INT to keep the Orange from stretching the lead any further.
RIGHT - While Vernon is the do it all weapon, Hoag is the reliable workhorse with another 97 yards as he continues to lead the FBS.

Syracuse, NY. - The Carrier Dome was rocking Saturday night as the #8 Syracuse Orange (7-0) flexed their dominance with a suffocating 31-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers (3-5). Fueled by a relentless defense and a balanced offensive attack, the Orange extended their undefeated season while leading the FBS in total sacks.

Nicknamed the ‘Cuse Crushers’ in the game preview by The Daily Orange, the Syracuse defense lived up to the hype, tallying seven sacks and shutting out Pittsburgh from start to finish. Linebacker Sean Schlauderaff and defensive end Jason Veasy each notched two sacks, adding to the Orange’s nation-leading 41 sacks on the season.

Pittsburgh’s puzzling offensive game plan raised eyebrows, as the Panthers inexplicably limited star running back Kevin Beavers to just nine carries. Even Syracuse head coach Nash Savage questioned the strategy postgame, remarking that he was “shocked” Pitt didn’t lean on their best offensive weapon.

On the offensive side, Syracuse efficiently controlled the game behind a standout performance from running back Spencer Vernon, who amassed 96 rushing yards, 73 receiving yards, and two total touchdowns.

Quarterback Jakhari Williams rebounded from last week’s struggles, delivering a 17-for-24, 177-yard, two-touchdown performance while adding 43 rushing yards. Running back JC Hoag also contributed, rushing for 97 yards on 17 carries, including a 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The future of Syracuse’s defense continues to look bright, as the Orange landed commitments from 11th overall prospect DT Terrell Sturm, 236th-ranked DE Amani Little, and 189th-ranked safety Quin Cheeseman over the weekend. With reinforcements on the way, the ‘Cuse Crushers look poised to remain a dominant force for years to come.

Syracuse travels to Blacksburg next week to face Virginia Tech (4-3) in what could be another tough defensive battle. Meanwhile, Ball State suffered a shocking 24-14 loss to Central Michigan, their first Mid-American Conference loss in over three years. Cardinals QB Titus Awe continued his rollercoaster season, tossing five more interceptions, bringing his total to 19 on the year.

With their defense at peak form and momentum on their side, Syracuse now sets its sights on Virginia Tech as they continue their push toward the College Football Playoff.
