Pavel Datsyuk is the man who leads this line and team each game. Datsyuk currently sits 3rd in the league with his 52pts. On his left side Filppula has flourished playing on the wing. Moved from his natural center position to the wing Filppula has a little more freedom on offense and its paid off. On the right rookie Tomas Jurco didn’t start in this position, he was in Grand Rapids Dan Cleary occupied this spot but Cleary didn’t mesh well with Datsyuk and Filppula. So the team decided to give Jurco a shot and he has shown that he has the talent to stay with 13 goals in 25 games.

The offense doesn’t drop off much from the top line to this line. At the beginning of the season this line carried the team. The Swedish connection line has they are called has shown great chemistry from the beginning. Franzen is the sniper on the line with his 17 goals, Zetterberg and Nyquist have chipped in nicely with 15g and 10g respectively.

This is where you see a drop offensively sort of, even though rookie Tomas Tatar has 8 goals and Cleary has 7 Darren Helm hasn’t scored yet in 41 games. On the defensive side this line was expected to be better than they have showed so far. Things will have to improve in that area before the playoffs start.

Not much was expected out of this line offensively and with 10 goals combined the line is pretty much on pace of what is needed from them. But like the 3rd line this line has struggled in their own end.

Overall the blue line group needs work defensively. Lidstrom the captain and leader of the team was a -1 until recently where he improved to 0. The offense is there Lidstrom 8goals, rookie Smith 7goals, Kronwall and White 3 goals each. The team may look to add a veteran defensive minded blue liner at the trade deadline if things do not improve. The team currently ranks 21st in goals against and 14th on the PK.

Howard at times has looked great and other times alittle off. Dawyne Roloson was signed to take over the backup role as Joey McDonald struggled and was demoted to Grand Rapids.

Outlook: Overall the team is playing pretty well, they are top in the West and 1pt behind for #1 in the league. But defensively they will have to improve, something needs to be fixed. But I fully expect the team to be in the playoffs and hopefully make it to the West finals at the very least.

      Jimmy Howard shutout the Oilers

Jimmy Howard had a strong game and lead the Wings to a 3-0 shutout over the Oilers. Oilers came into the game with a 27-12-1 record. It was a matchup of 2 top teams in the West.

Tomas Tatar would score in the 1st period, his 9th goal on the season. This would prove to be the game winner.

        Howard strong against the Pens

Jimmy Howard stopped all but 1 shot against the Pens in leading the Wings to a 3-1 win. Two quick goals by the Wings late in the 2nd period had the Penguins on their heals. In the 3rd James Neal would captialize on a bad give away by Detroit near their goal. But Johan Franzen's 20th goal of the season would season would seal the victory for the Wings.

For this game i kept my sliders (Tzar's sliders with couple of tweaks) but went back to "Superstar" difficulty. I simmed the 1st period and half the 2nd then took over from there.

I am going to sim games up till trade deadline but will play a few games against some of the better teams during the sim. I will have a Trade Deadline update and then another big (standings, stats etc....) at end of the season.

Detroit AP- Detroit suffered 2 injuries on the blueline recently. Brendan Smith was hurt in a game against Minnesota (1/23/2013). Smith suffered a MCL sprain and will be out until April 1, 2013. Niklas Kronwall suffered a concussion in a win against Nashville (2/25/2013) and is out untill Mar 13, 2013. Andrew Campbell (acquried in a trade earlier in the season ) was called up from Grand Rapids.

Detroit also traded Joey McDonald to Phoenix for their 2013 6th rd pick and 2014 4th rd pick. McDonald was in Grand Rapids sitting behind P. Mrazek and J. Pearce. He had lost his backup job after some bad starts.

Detroit comes into the game against Vancouver 8-2 in their last 10 games, currently on a 4 game winning streak including a 2-0 shutout win over the Kings 2 nights ago. Vancouver comes in with well I don’t know cause I didn’t look last night before I went to be LOL.

This will be the final game before the trade deadline and we think Gm Ken Holland will be busy work his cell phone during the game. We caught up to Ken Holland during practice and asked him about the trade deadline

DFP: What are your plans with the trade deadline coming up?

Holland: Nothing really. We don’t expect to be very active that day. We really like the make up of our team and how it is playing right now. If we do add anything it maybe a veteran blue liner and/or a gritty, big forward but fans and media shouldn’t expect a roster busting move by us.

DFP: Is there a particular player(s) you have your eye or targeting?

Holland: we may but I wont go into any detail about what players that interest us at this time. Like I said we don’t expect to be very active.

Well we will see what happens come deadline day. But for now the Wings will concentrate on the Canucks and look to continue their winning streak and add to their point total.

                Howard shutouts the Kings

Jimmy Howard stopped all 33 Kings shots in a 2-0 win. Filppula (game winner) and Franzen scored the Redwing goals.

Next up will a date with Vancouver. Dwayne Roloson will get the start in net.

Redwings and Sabres deal at the Trade Deadline

Detroit went into the trade deadline really not looking to make any big changes to the team. They were sitting on top of the West and fighting with Pittsburgh for 1st overall. The offense was firing on all cylinders and the defense was starting to come around.

Detroit's Gm Ken Holland took plenty of calls from teams making offers

"some were just way out there, no chance it would even happen" - Gm Ken Holland said about some of the deals

Buffalo had made a couple offers already to Detroit but nothing that really interested Detroit or its Gm. Until Regher's name was added to the mix.

"We talked about a few players, but they threw out Regher's name and it went from there" -Holland

the deal went down as this:

                  acquires: Robyn Regher

acquires: Dan Cleary, 2013 2nd rd pick

                  Ken Holland on the deal:
Cleary has been a great player for us but this season we had some younger guys step in and really show that they belong on the roster. Cleary was a healthy scratch at times this season. We also had 2 1st rd picks so adding the 2nd rd pick was really not a big deal. Adding Regher to our blueline will give us that physical dman back there. Adds another veteran to the blueline.
Regher will be penciled in next to Niklas Kronwall when he comes back from injury.

the blueline when everyone is healthy:

Lidstrom - Smith (smith was playing very good paired with Lidstrom before he got hurt he will be back here when he is back.)

                  Regher- Kronwall

                  Murray-Kindl/Ericsson

*Kindl and Ericsson will find themselves competing for the final defensive spot. Kindl has the inside track right now.

Coach Alcide on the new addition
Regher is a great addition to our team. A big dman who has no problem dropping the gloves. It will give us another dimension. He may at times pair up with Lidstrom.
Trades from around the NHL on deadline day:

To Min: I. Vishnevsky, 2014 4th rd pick
                  To SJ: M. Kassian

To Chi: S. Sullivan, 2013 6th rd pick
                  To Nyi- T. Laakso

To Min- TJ Hensick, 2013 & 2014 4th rd picks
To Stl- Ty Conklin, J. Broda

                  To Min- A. Nittymaki
To SJ- 2013 1st rd pick, J. Faulk

To Fla: 2013 1st rd pick, M. Mayorov
To Cmb: J. Markstrom, A. Murray

after the deadline i simmed to the wings last regular season game. i did that becuase the only thing in doubt for the wings if them or pittsburgh will finish #1 overall. Right now the wings have 1 game left and sit 1pt ahead of Pittsburgh who have 2 games left.

I will have the final standings, league leaders and team stats, playoff picture and 1st rd pre view of the wings and their 1st rd opponent later tonight.
