2013 Training Camp Preview: Detroit Red Wings

    • 2012-13 record: 52-20-10; Won the Stanley Cup 4-3 over Buffalo Sabres.
    • Head Coach: Alcide Spitz. Record with Detroit:90-60-10. Career record: 90-60-10.
    • Assistant Coaches: Bill Peters, Jeff Blashill, Jim Bedard, Keith McKittrick

    OVERVIEW
Last season saw the Wings finish 2nd overall in the NHL then go on to win the Stanley Cup over Buffalo in 7 games. The Wings seen longtime captian and their best defenseman Nick Lidstrom retire shortly after their cup win. The Wings were left to fill that void and they did it by re-signing their own blueliners. The Wings then decided that they could trade Johan Franzen in the offseason.

    KEY ADDITIONS

Chris Neil, Jason Chimera, Shane O’Brien

    KEY DEPARTURES

    D-Nicklas Lidstrom (4g, 28a, 32pts), LW- Johan Franzen (36g, 26a, 62p)

    KEY POSITION(s) BATTLE

Lidstrom’s retirement created a big hole on the blueline and the Wings hope they can fill that void with a collective effort from their top 4 dmen, Kronwall, Regher, White, Smith. The team did sign Shane O’Brien to add competition for the 6th spot on the blue line. With Franzen now in Florida this opens up the 2nd line LW position. The team hopes that Tomas Tatar can step up and take over this spot in training camp. He may have the job already as their really isn’t any competition for that spot unless an unexpected signing happens or one of their prospects really steps up his game in training camp.

PLAYER ON THE VERGE OF A BREAKOUT SEASON

Tomas Tatar could get his chance this season. He played last season in Detroit after a couple good years in the AHL. But he found himself on the 3rd sometimes 4th lines during the season. In the playoffs he took Franzen’s spot on the 2nd line and 2nd PP unit and didn’t look out of place. This season it looks like that same spot is his to lose which means his ice time will go up.

    PLAYER UNDER THE MOST PRESSURE

That would be the whole defensive group. The blue liners have to go into the season with out their leader. We will learn pretty quickly what things will look like in the post Lidstrom era.

    PROSPECT TO WATCH

Teemu Pulkkinen the sniper from Finland played his 1st pro season in Grand Rapids and was the Griffins leading goal scorer. He may have a very hard time cracking the lineup as he is probably best suited for a spot in the top 6 and there is a good group of young players on the wing already in Jurco, Nyquist and Tatar. The Wings do not want to see him in the bottom 6.

Re: Detroit Redwings BEaGM (a re-start)

Detroit MI- The Wings went into their pre-season games wanting to see how their young players looked and maybe give the vets a game or 2. The Wings ended pre-season with a 2-1-1 record 9 GF and 11 GA, usually in pre-season you would see a team start a differant goalie each game or give a goalie 2 starts out of the 4. Detroit decided to take a differant route and start Petr Mrazek all 4 pre-season games. He did decent going 2-1-1 with a 2.70gaa and a 91.1 save percentage. He still has some work to do but you could see the talent that he has.
here is the final pre-season stats:

      and the pre-season game scores

The Red Wings assigned the following players to Grand Rapids
      Teemu Pulkkinen
      Adam Almqvist
      Corey Emmerton
      Landon Ferraro
      Calle Jarnkrok
      Alex Marchenko
      Troy Rutkowski
      Marek Tvrdon
      Anthoney Verret
      Petr Mrazek
Colin Smith (didnt participate in preseason)
      Reginald Legace (same as Smith)
      Riley Sheahen
      Joakim Andersson
      Ryan Sproul

Derrick Pouliot was re-assigned to his Juinor team the Portland Winterhawks.

Also the team announced today they have signed Chris Mason to a 1yr deal to be the backup goalie.

        Red Wings Season Pre-View

Here we go again, a new season. The Wings finished out last season as the Stanley Cup champions which means they come into this season looking to defend that title.

In the off-season the Wings lost a couple key players. Nick Lidstrom retired then Johan Franzen was dealt on draft day. The Wings brought a couple free agents (Chimera, Neil, O'Brien) hoping they will add some size and toughness to the team. The Wings will rely on their top players in Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Filppula up front. they will then hope that 2nd yr players Nyquist and Jurco can repeat or even better what they did last season. They team is hoping that another 2nd year player, Tomas Tatar, will step up and have a breakout season.

On the blueline there is the vets (Kronwall, White, Regher and O'Brien) then they have the youth (Smith, Murray and Kindl) all of the combined will have to show their fans and the NHL that they can be a top unit in the league without their leader Lidstrom.

The Wings will start the season on the road. The NHL schedule makers were unkind to the Wings giving them 6 straight on the road to open the season (Edm, LA, Nsh, Col, Cgy, Sj). Then they come home to play 3 (Cmb, Cgy, Dal) head out on the road for 2 (Chi, Stl) before ending October with 2 at home (Edm, Min).

The Wings and Griffins both released their opening night lineups today

Re: Detroit Redwings BEaGM (a re-start)

Well i had played the 1st game of the season and had a write up but i've lost that so instead i am going with an team, league update after the month of October.

          So here is the update

          October schedule and results

          Team Stats

          - Tomas Tatar and his 7 goals could possible be on the verge of a breakout season. Too early to get real excited about his offense just yet.

          - Brendan Smith really has improved his game. His quickness and speed have improved and his playing smarter on defense.

          - Ryan Murray really has shown some improvement from his rookie year. A little smarter with the puck and he is a little stronger than last season.

-Big surprise is Nyquist no goals but is leading the team in assists.

-Still early in the season to really get a feel for the team. But there is some players that have shown improvement so far. Chimera has played like management expected. Fast and strong he really gives that 3rd line some muscle.

          League standings and leaders

            Chimera leads Wings to Win

            [/align]

Jason Chimera brought in by the Wings to give them alittle more speed and size up front had probably his best game to date. His 2 goals lead the Wings to a 3-2 win over Florida. This would be the 1st game for Johan Franzen against his old team Detroit.

Franzen traded to Florida in the off-season came into the game as the Panthers leader in goals with 15. He wouldnt find the score sheet as the Wings shutdown the top line. The Panthers would lose Tomas Fleischmann after he got rocked by Jakub Kindl against the boards. He wouldnt return to the game.

Chimera's 2 goals came in the 3rd period with the game tied at 1. He would give the Wings a 2-1 lead on his 7th goal of the season. But alittle over a mintue later the Panthers would tie the game at 2. Chimera would get the game winner at the 11min mark after some hard work in the corner by Patrick Eaves causing a turn over. Helm picked up the puck and found Chimera alone in front of the net.

Jurco and Datsyuk 3pts each in win

Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Jurco put together last year have contuined their great chemistry this season. Both finished with 3pts in their win over the Rangers. Datsyuk 1g, 2a and Jurco 2g, 1a.

Jurco opened the scoring 49 seconds into the game with his 11th. New York would tie it early in the 2nd when Brad Richards put home his 5th goal. Chimera would score his 9th to give the Wings a 2-1 lead. Datsyuk would add his 17th to push the lead to 2 goals heading into the 3rd period.

In the 3rd the Rangers would cut the lead to 3-2 when Richards scored his 2nd of the game. Jurco would score his 2nd of the game to seal the win for the Wings

Next up the Wings travel to Montreal to battle the Canadiens.

                OMG Gomez scores!!!

Carey Price and Brian Gionta would lead the Canadiens to a 2-1 win over the Wings. Scott Gomez scored in this game but it was his 5th on the season so its not like he went a year without a goal. But his goal put the Habs up 1-0 in the 2nd after a scoreless 1st period between the teams. PK Subban carried the puck down the boards and put a nice move on Ryan Murray to get around him. He found Gomez by himself at the backpost after for whatever reason Regher decided he needed to go after Subban instead of covering Gomez.

about 4mins later Jason Chimera tied the game at 1 with his 11th goal. Ian White put a puck on net and Chimera got his stick on it and redirected the shot between Price's legs.

in the 3rd Brian Gionta ripped home his 11th of the season and the game winner. After a bad giveaway by Regher in his zone Gionta pounched on the puck and fired it high over the blocker for the winner.

Next up Detroit stays in Canada and head to Ottawa for date with the Sens.

                Roster update:

Chris Mason will get the start in Ottawa. He was signed to be the backup but like McDonald last year he isnt playing that well. He will need a good game against Ottawa to keep his job.

Zibanejad and Spezza Lead the Way

Spezza 2 assist and Zibanejad along with Craig Andersson's play in net gave the Senators the 4-1 win over the Red Wings. Chris Mason starting in net for the Wings didnt have the best of games. He has really struggled with the Wings so far this season.

Don't know if its Mason and his game or the team in front of him. it could be a little of both.
                  Coach Alcide

                  Team Update:
Detroit has called up Petr Mrazek from Grand Rapids and will give him at home against Anaheim. The Wings decided that Mrazek can sit on the bench for the next few games and get use to the enivorment in the NHL and learn from Howard. Mason will stay with the team during this time and watch from the games from the stands.

Robyn Regher the big aquistion at the trade deadline last season has struggled with the team this year. He has been a healthy scratch the last few games. Shane O'Brien has been starting his place.

Petr Mrazek called up from GR got his 1st NHL win over Anahiem. Detroit needed to come back from a 2-0 deficit in the 3rd to get Mrazek the win.

Anahiem went up 1-0 9mins into the game when Getzlaf got to a loose puck and scored his 16th goal of the season. In the 2nd Kyle Cumiskey would push the lead to 2-0 with his 3rd goal of the season.

In the 3rd Detroit started their push and it took alittle over 12mins before they got on the board with Zetterbergs 12th goal of the season. 4mins later Patrick Eaves tied the game when he defelected a shot that went over Hillers blocker.

2mins later Valtteria Filppula had a shot hit him in the stomach but he was able to find the puck at his skates and get a backhand shot off that surprised hiller. From their Detroit held on for the win.

                      40ish game update

Well my plan was to do an update at the end of each month. I started with Oct and plan was to do nov, dec etc... but i ended up getting to the 1st games in Jan LOL. So this update is up to that point.

                      Here is Detroit's team stats

Pavel Datsyuk again shows he is the teams leader. Again leading the team in pts, goals and assist.
Tomas Jurco is showing no signs of a sophmore slump.
Disappointed in Regher 8pts is good for a defensive dman but he is a -5 and lost his #2 spot on the blueline to Brendan Smith.
Chris Mason signed to be the backup has been somewhat of a disappointment.
Ryan Murray and Brendan Smith have shown improvment over last season. Smith has taking over as the #2 dman on the top pairing with Kronwall. Murray is the #4 on the blueline paired with Ian White.
The team will need to improve their PP and Pk units.
Not sure what the team will be looking for at the trade deadline. Could be someone to replace Tatar on the 2nd line. He has decent numbers but isnt real noticable when i play games.

                      Updated Detroit Prospect Chart
                      Graduated(Removed from list):
                      Brendan Smith
                      Tomas Jurco
                      Gustav Nyquist
                      Tomas Tatar

Mrazek moves to #1 on the list, currently with the Red wings but unlike the 4 who were removed (going into their 2nd yr with Detroit) Mrazek has only played 2 games in the NHL.

Colin Smith has played well in Grand Rapids so far. Tvrdon, Jarnkrok and Pulkkinen are the top line in GR.

*i will try and get stats for the players in Grand Rapids soon. I wish i would have done that earlier today but forgot LOL. But Colin Smith who was my top pick in past draft has played well in GR i think he may lead the team in assist or is 2nd. and i think he is maybe 4th in pts in GR.

Looks like Buffalo is showing that they are the top contender out East. They really want a return trip to the Finals.
Florida with new goalie Nick Backstrom are right on the Sabres heels for that #1 seed in the East.
In the West looks like a 3 team race in the Central, St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago. Chicago really turned things around from the begininng of the season.
Tampa Bay, New Jersey, Phoenix look like they will be sellers at the trade deadline.

Nash, Tatar, Regher and picks traded

Detroit, MI- After recent games the Wings felt they needed to add another "true" sniper and big body to their top 6. They were getting alot of offers for players like Filppula, Jurco and Nyquist but the team has decided those 3 will not be moved. On name popped up in recent trade talk as well was Tomas Tatar.....
A few team came call about him, Columbus made a couple offers but we didnt like them so we added to the deal and counter their latest offer and it was done.
                            -Gm Holland

The deal goes down like this:

                            To Detroit: Rick Nash
at the time of the trade Nash had 18g, 8a, 26pts

To Columbus: Tomas Tatar, Robyn Regher, 2014 2nd rd pick, 2015 1st rd pick.
                            Tatar stats at trade: 20g,14,34pts
                            Regher 2g,7a, 9pts

Wings give up a 23yo top 6 forward who was have a pretty good year already a 20 goal scorer. But felt they needed a big forward in their top 6. the biggest player they have is Jurco at 6'2" the rest are 6' and below.

Moving out Regher was a surprise somewhat. He was the big addition last year to the club at the deadline and help the Wings to a Cup win. But this season he really struggled with the team. He started out as the #2 and paired with Nick Kronwall but couldn't find his game. He was then paired with Kindl as the 3rd pair d. Tatar showed his skills during the Playoffs, taking over Franzen's spot in the top 6. Franzen was later traded and Tatar was giving the chance to breakout. He was have a good season with 20goals good for 4th on the team. But at times despite the offense he would get pushed around, disappear duriing games.

While Nash has less stats wise compared to Tatar he brings what the Wings felt they lacked, size up front. Nash could be a 30+ goal scorer for the Wings this season.

Because of Regher getting shipped out and Ryan Murray's injury the Wings have called up Alex Marchenko.

                              2014 NHL Trade Deadline

Detroit, Mi- Detroit was alot more active than usual at the deadline this year. Last year they made 1 deal bringing in Regher this year they made 3 plus the deal to get Nash 2 days before the deadline.

                              The Detroit Deals:

To Detroit: 2014 1st rd pick (dal), C. Janssen
To Dallas: C. Neil, J. Mursak, 2014 6th rd pick

Breakdown: Neil had only seen 5 games all season with Detroit. Mursak brought speed to the club but when Detroit signed Jason Chimera in the off-season it pushed Mursak onto the bench. Janssen may see playing time in detroit or grand rapids. The Wings pick up a 1st rd pick, they had traded their 1st pick for 2014 last year.

                              To Detroit: 2014 2nd rd pick (NYI), M Donovan(D) POT C/C/B
To NYI: 2015 2nd rd pick.

Breakdown: Detroit gets a 2nd rd pick for 2014 after moving theirs out in the Nash deal. Donovan a undrafted 23yo dman will join GR.

To Detroit: 2014 1st rd pick (Van)
                              To Vancouver: M. Callahan, C. Janssen, 2014 2nd (NYI)

Breakdown: Wings upgrade that 2nd to a 1st rd pick. Janssen would have probably seen little time in Detroit. Callahan the might pest in GR was passed by other prospects and saw extremely limited ice time.

With these trades it left the Wings short so they have called up Joakim Andersson. Shane O'Brien also inserted into the lineup.
Also the Wings decided to send Petr Mrazek back to GR.

                                Nash makes his Wings debut

Rick Nash scored 57secs into his Red Wings debut and showed the fans why they traded for him. It was his only goal but not his only chance, he used his big frame to create opportuinites for himself and his linemates. The Wings would go on to win 6-4.

The Wings built a 3-1 lead after the 1st on goals from Nash(19th) and Jurco (24th, 25th). But the Hawks would tie the game in the 2nd from goals by Bickell and Keith. a mintue after Kieth's tying goal Filppula would put the Wings back up 4-3.

In the 3rd White would push the lead to 2 goals at 5-3, but a giveaway in their own zone while on the PP lead to a shorty for Patrick Sharp cutting the lead to 1.

The Hawks would pull their goalie late hunting for the tying goal, but Filppula would score his 2nd of the game to end the Hawks hopes for a comeback.
