OVERVIEW
Last season saw the Wings finish 2nd overall in the NHL then go on to win the Stanley Cup over Buffalo in 7 games. The Wings seen longtime captian and their best defenseman Nick Lidstrom retire shortly after their cup win. The Wings were left to fill that void and they did it by re-signing their own blueliners. The Wings then decided that they could trade Johan Franzen in the offseason.
KEY ADDITIONS
Chris Neil, Jason Chimera, Shane O’Brien
KEY DEPARTURES
D-Nicklas Lidstrom (4g, 28a, 32pts), LW- Johan Franzen (36g, 26a, 62p)
KEY POSITION(s) BATTLE
Lidstrom’s retirement created a big hole on the blueline and the Wings hope they can fill that void with a collective effort from their top 4 dmen, Kronwall, Regher, White, Smith. The team did sign Shane O’Brien to add competition for the 6th spot on the blue line. With Franzen now in Florida this opens up the 2nd line LW position. The team hopes that Tomas Tatar can step up and take over this spot in training camp. He may have the job already as their really isn’t any competition for that spot unless an unexpected signing happens or one of their prospects really steps up his game in training camp.
PLAYER ON THE VERGE OF A BREAKOUT SEASON
Tomas Tatar could get his chance this season. He played last season in Detroit after a couple good years in the AHL. But he found himself on the 3rd sometimes 4th lines during the season. In the playoffs he took Franzen’s spot on the 2nd line and 2nd PP unit and didn’t look out of place. This season it looks like that same spot is his to lose which means his ice time will go up.
PLAYER UNDER THE MOST PRESSURE
That would be the whole defensive group. The blue liners have to go into the season with out their leader. We will learn pretty quickly what things will look like in the post Lidstrom era.
PROSPECT TO WATCH
Teemu Pulkkinen the sniper from Finland played his 1st pro season in Grand Rapids and was the Griffins leading goal scorer. He may have a very hard time cracking the lineup as he is probably best suited for a spot in the top 6 and there is a good group of young players on the wing already in Jurco, Nyquist and Tatar. The Wings do not want to see him in the bottom 6.
