Leafs Kessel To Miss 2-3 Weeks With Injury
The Toronto Maple Leafs were dealt some tough news this morning following their shootout win against their rival Ottawa Senators. Leafs leading scorer Phil Kessel left the game early in the second period after sustaining a hit from Senators forward Jason Spezza. Kessel went awkwardly into the boards and lay on the ground in pain before slowly skating to the bench. The hit sparked a fight between Colton Orr and Guillame Latendresse on the ensuing faceoff. Kessel was listed as day-to-day with a "lower body injury" following the game. That "lower body injury" has turned out to be a high ankle sprain that is expected to sideline the Leafs sniper for around 2-3 weeks at best, but could easily keep him out of game action for up to a month.
The Leafs are expected to make a move and call up a young player from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League in an attempt to fill the void in the lineup following Kessel's injury.Comment

Leafs, Penguins Make Swap Following Injuries
Just one day after losing star winger Phil Kessel to a sprained ankle for 2-3 weeks, Leafs general manager Martin Miller made his first career trade to help fill the void left by Kessel. The Leafs looked to the Pittsburgh Penguins for this deal, sending Joe Colborne to the Penguins in exchange for right winger James Neal.
Colborne has spent all of the young season with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. He came to Toronto from the Boston Bruins in a deal that saw former fan favorite defenseman Tomas Kaberle go to the Bruins. He has shown glimpses of his potential, but has yet to reach it and is clearly still developing.
Neal, the former Dallas Star, was acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins two seasons ago in exchange for defenseman Alex Goligoski and two minor league players. He has shown that he has a good shot and also has the ability to produce at the NHL level. Neal is expected to fill in on the first line for the Maple Leafs until Kessel is ready to return from his injury. When Kessel returns, Neal will either take the left wing position from Joffrey Lupul on the first line, or he may be demoted to play with James Van Riemsdyk on the second line.Comment

Great trade. Getting Neal is a good move. He did great for me in my PIT dynasty. Good goalscorer, a sniper in a PWF body.Comment

Re: The GM Journey of Martin Miller
Definitely. I've seen quite a few dynasties that have seen him turn into one of the top goal scorers in the league.Comment

Leafs Score Three In The Third, Top Islanders On The Road
After having to go 11 rounds in a shootout to beat their rival Ottawa Senators, the Toronto Maple Leafs did all they could to make sure this one didn't go into another shootout. James Van Riemsdyk opened the scoring early in the third period by burying his second goal of the season past Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov.
However, less than three minutes later, Islanders forward John Tavares tied the game up, putting a one-timer past James Reimer. The Leafs were determined however, as captain Dion Phaneuf sent Clarke MacArthur in on a breakaway with a beautiful pass. MacArthur managed to slip the puck past the blocker of Nabokov to take the lead for the Leafs. Newcomer James Neal added an empty net goal to seal the deal for the Maple Leafs, who won their second straight game.

Re: The GM Journey of Martin Miller
Just catching up on all this. Nice trade for Neal. Even if it's a bit early in the season, but hey, provides a solid one-two punch with Kessel.,Comment

Re: The GM Journey of Martin Miller
Definitely a steal in that Neal... Was a little hesitant to pull the trigger and get rid of Colborne, but the Leafs traded him away anywaysComment
