    Trade Deadline - 3pm, 28th February 2024

Here are all of the trades that occurred in the month leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline:

    At this season's Trade Deadline:
This season there were actually some decent trades amongst the other teams in the NHL:

    - The biggest trade I felt was Tampa Bay’s Acquisition of talented Goalie Michael DiPietro from Vancouver in exchange for McDonagh, Spacek & Grabner. DiPietro has been living in Thatcher Demko’s shadow for a long time & this move to the Lightning, who desperately need a bonafide starting goalie, should be a match made in heaven & should see the Lightning climb the ladder once more, who still have Steven Stamkos & Nikita Kucherov at the helm, plus about $12M worth of cap-space to sign FA’s next off-season. This is also a great move for Vancouver, who are a team currently in a Wild Card spot, & have added depth to their lineup both up forward & defense.

    - Vegas acquired the services of Jordan Eberle from Arizona to boost their Top 6 / Top 9 depth. A great acquisition, considering the Golden Knights are finally staring at their 2nd ever playoffs appearance since their inaugural season.

    - Toronto, who currently sit vicariously as the 1st wild card, have picked up Tyler Toffoli & Kris Letang from San Jose, who it appears have pressed the ‘rebuild’ button. Both players will be huge additions to the team on the run to the playoffs.

Game Results, News & Team Updates::

        3rd March, Detroit @ Florida

In the 1st of a 3-game road trip, the Red Wings are out-classed tonight in Florida, going down to the Panthers 5-2.
The Panthers had control of the game early when Vincent Troucheck scored in the 1st 3 minutes of the game & the home team didn’t look back from there, outshooting the Wings 41 to 29.
Fredrik Larsson scored his 4th goal in 3 games to show some improvement in his form, however the Panthers had it all too easy with 5 different goal scorers, who were Vincent Troucheck, Mike Hoffman, Colton Sissons, Corey Perry & Nick Bjugstad.
Chistov was busy tonight & could not contain his opponents, the Wings net-minder finished the night with 35 saves.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        4th March, Detroit @ Boston

The Red Wings make a statement with a 8-1 demolition of the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.
On the 2nd night of their road double header the Red Wings came out firing, making up for last night’s loss to the Panthers.
Larsson, Veleno & Goldobin each scored a pair of goals, plus Zadina & Josi each scored 1 each in the huge win, which blew out during the 3rd period, when the Wings scored 4 goals on top of the 4 they already had.
There wasn’t much that could be said about the Bruins gameplay tonight, they were completely outplayed, only making 20 shots on net, with Torey Krug, the only goal scorer during the 2nd period.
Ville Husso although quiet at his end most of the night, notches the win, making 19 saves. For Michal Neuvirth there was no escape, with Boston coaches electing to keep him in net all night, allowing 8 goals from the 41 shots faced.
Larsson sees himself on a small goal scoring streak as such. After tonight’s pair of goals, he now has 6 from the past 4 games.
It was a case of worse luck for Evgeny Svechnikov who was only on his 2nd game back from injury. The left winger sustained a concussion early in the 1st period & did not return to the ice.
The Wings get a days break before playing the Hurricanes on the road at PNC Arena.
The Hurricanes have won their past 10 games in a row.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        6th March, Detroit @ Carolina

The Red Wings have pulled out another big win with tonight’s 6-0 victory over league leading Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena.
Tonight’s big win sees an untimely end to Carolina’s 10-game win streak as the Red Wings owned nearly every part of the ice, doing just as they did last game against the Bruins, tonight outshooting their opponents 42 to 29.
Guy Castonguay & Kirby Dach each scored a pair of goals, with Dylan Larkin scoring the game’s 1st & Jeff Skinner Scoring the game’s last with only 20 seconds remaining.
Ville Husso earns his 5th shutout this season in a great effort, tonight stopping 29 shots on net.
Alex Nedeljkovic, who leads the league in Wins, would have been glad to hear the final siren. Although having the best season of his career, tonight it was a nightmare, finally finishing with 36 saves.
A small injury concern for rookie winger Vitali Goldobin. The young winger only played 9 seconds of a shift before taking a heavy check to the side from d-man Justin Faulk. Goldobin left the ice not to return.
The Hurricanes will get to seek redemption in only 2 days time, when both teams travel to Detroit to play Tuesday night.

        8th March, Carolina @ Detroit

The Red Wings hot run continues, defeating the Hurricanes 5-1. It is the Wings 2nd win over the Canes in 3 days.
The Hurricanes looked to be the better team early on & had the score to prove it, when Victor Rask scored in front of net early. Unfortunately it went downhill from there.
Fredrik Larsson’s great run with the puck continues, scoring a pair of goals to give him 8 in 6 games.
Matt Puempel, playing in his 1st NHL game for the season (& in 4 years), scored the Wings 2nd of the night & was followed soon after by a goal from Guy Castonguay.
Roman Josi was the last of the Red Wings goal scorers, when he nailed a slap shot from out deep during the final period.
Ville Husso tallies his 3rd consecutive win as his season appears to be well & truly back on track.
The Red Wings now have scored 20 goals in the past 3 games in what has been a great run, including 2 wins over the current league leaders, the Hurricanes.

        3 Stars of the Game:

Zach Spezza opened the goal scoring early in the 1st. However Habs Center, Nick Suzuki, wated no time in tying the game with a goal of his own, which would be the only score from his team on the night. Anthony Mantha & Claude Giroux each scored a pair of goals in the win.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        Wrap up:
The Team really hit their straps this month, going 11-3-0 as we near the end of the regular season.
With only 4 games to go we sit comfortably on top of the Atlantic & only 2 points behind current league leaders, Carolina. We drew even with Carolina prior to the Tampa Bay game, however we had an off-night & fell behind with the 3-0 loss. This should make for an interesting finish as to who might win the Presidents Trophy. We have a real chance here.
It was great to see a return to form for a number of our players. Some of them really bolted out of the gate at the start of the month, after taking a tongue-lashing from Coach Blashill at the completion of the Panthers game on the 3rd, the boy followed up the next day with an 8-1 blitz over Boston & then 2 wins (6-0 & 5-1) over Carolina.
Larsson finally found his nerve on the ice had got himself on a great scoring streak to start the month. When his scoring production did slow down again, he was still in the mix of it, tallying assists everywhere. For the month Larsson finished with 8 goals & 10 assists, for 18 points.
Larsson wasn’t the only player to impress me this month. Zadina, Mantha, Josi & Larkin were real standouts, as was Jeff Skinner who remains to be the team’s 2nd highest goal scorer.
Viktor Chistov & Ville Husso remain in impressive form. Chistov got lucky in a couple of the later games of the month, however when you still win when one particular player has been struggling, it shows the team has the ability to adjust & find a different way to get the objective done.
With 4 games to go before playoffs & a certain spot locked in, we’ll do our best to keep our players healthy in preparation for the post-season.

        Injuries:
4th March – LW Evgeny Svechnikov – Concussion – missed 9 games, returning approx.. 7th April

            Wrap up:

A great way to finish out the season with 4 wins, pushing the streak to 6 & pinching the Presidents Trophy in just the 2nd last game of the season.
Our work isn’t done yet as we now head for the Playoffs.
I’m glad to say, going into Round 1, we have a full healthy list with the recent return of Evgeny Svechnikov after missing a month due to a concussion.

Over the past 20 games, the Wings have really found another gear. If it wasn’t for missing 5 games through a broken jaw, Larsson could very well have been this season’s highest goal scorer. With 7 goals added in his final 4 games, Larsson fell 1 goal short of Vegas Golden Knights star forward, Sergey Malkin’s tally of 45. Agonisingly close, however Larsson is only 21 years old & already has 149 goals racked up in only 3 seasons of playing, that’s quite phenomenal & he’ll get his name on the Maurice Rocket Richard trophy one day.
It hasn’t all been Larsson either, with players such as Mantha, Skinner, Zadina, all contributing as well as some solid performances coming from the blue line such as Roman Josi, Colton Parayko & Zach Spezza.
Where we have been best this season is undoubtedly in net, with perhaps 2 of the best goalies in the league today. Viktor Chistov has the best GAA (Goals Against Average) at 2.04, in the league for goalies who have played 20 games or more. Ville Husso has the 3rd best average of 2.21, in the league behind Jets’ Calle Hellebuyck at 2.18.
It is here in net where I hope we can maintain the most consistency & push ourselves deep into the Playoffs, & who knows, if we keep doing things right, we could find ourselves with a 3rd consecutive Stanley Cup.

            Injuries:
4th March – LW Evgeny Svechnikov – Concussion – missed 12 games in total – Returned for last game of season

            Contract Extensions:
            Nil

            Call Ups/ Assignments:
            Nil

The Playoffs Picture – The Playoffs Begin, Round 1:

            In the East:
            - This Seasons Presidents Trophy Winners the Detroit Red Wings, led by Dylan Larkin take on Johnny Gaudreau, Andrei Vasilevskiy & the New York Rangers
            - The Carolina Hurricanes, who were just edged out of the top spot at the end of the season will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins who despite their list’s aging stars have made yet another post-season & will be a hard opponent to beat.
            - The Buffalo Sabres just held onto their 2nd place in the Atlantic standings to a fast finishing Boston Buins & the 2 will face each other in yet another fantastic series.
            - Alex Ovechkin leads his Washington Capitals into yet another playoffs appearance. This season they take on a vastly improving New York Islanders outfit, led by Taylor Hall.

            In the West:
            - In the wake of acquiring the biggest steal in the 2023 Draft, right winger Mika Voutilainen, the Chicago Blackhawks led the Western Conference all season & will take on the Colorado Avalanche, who edged out Dallas in the final games of the season.
            - The Calgary Flames were the best team in the Pacific & 4th best team in the Western Conference this season, led by Brady Tkachuk & goalie James Reimer. They take on Connor McDavid & the Edmonton Oilers who have consistently made the post-season each year, however have fallen short of the mark. Will this be the season McDavid hoists the Cup?
-The St Louis Blues finished the 2023/24 season with the 2nd best record in the Western Conference & will take on 3rd placed Winnipeg Jets in what has been a great rivalry in seasons past, this year should be no different.
            - The Vancouver Canucks will take on the Vegas Golden Knights, who after much hardship in the wake of their initial success in their 1st season in the league, have finally made it to their 2nd playoffs appearance in their short 7 year history. The Golden Knights have been propped up all season by Sergey Malkin, who led the league in goal scoring & point scoring, can the yound dynamo forward lead his team to one step further than the team of 2018?

I'll just have some more bread, thank you.

I would ask for a beer with it but it seems that the NHL has outlawed the sale of adult beverages at all rinks!

Could be an interesting start to the playoffs for you. Looks like those injuries started piling up in February and March. Hopefully you're healthy and ready for the road to the cup!

I've got a couple games left in my 1st season with the Wings. I'll have to let you know how things unfold. This has been a fun read, keep it up!

                                Scout’s Report:

In terms of overall depth, again this season is touted to be a slightly weaker pool of prospects than in years past, however just like last season, everyone wants the player listed at number #1, Harold McIver a Franchise potential player from the QMJHL.

The Red Wings currently have 2 picks in the 1st round of this seasons draft (Our own, plus Edmonton’s 1st Round pick), both of which are in the lower half of the draw.
Our scouts have again unearthed some exceptional talent that are likely to go late which we will take a good look at.
A trade or 2 is not out of the question at the Draft, however let’s see how the next round or 2 goes before we make that call.
