Very impressed with the ammount of detail you've put in to this story, especially with the stuff about other team during off season. I also habe Dach and Zadina in my franchise mode.

    Good luck going forward!

Thanks! I'd love to put in more opposition team info if I had time to.
I really like Kirby Dach, he has a big future ahead of him. What is even more cool is, I'd say the Red Wings are a good chance to select him (amongst others, probably a D-man) in the real 2019 draft, if they finish around the bottom end of the league this season which is highly likely.
Zadina has been pretty solid in my franchise but unfortunately he lives in the shadows of Mantha most of the time. Who knows, he may get his chance to shine. He's had a much slower progression in real life than I would have thought but he should make a fine hockey player, just needs time.

Thanks, it took me 2 days to finally decide on putting in an offer for Giroux - I didn't want to unbalance the team or most importantly, make the signing too unrealistic. That was also why I stayed away from adding another elite d-man which I had more than enough $$$ for. As it turns out with the team's performance so far it doesn't look like they will be astoundingly great in 22/23.

The teams I can't stand these days is Pittsburgh & Toronto (though I do respect the Leafs), oh & Florida, yeh I've never really liked them at all, especially since the division re-alignment.

Game Results, News & Team Updates::

          1st November, Pittsburgh @ Detroit

Pittsburgh emerge victorious after a close 2-1 decision over Detroit at Little Caesars Arena.
Phil Kessel scored during in the 1st period for the Penguins, which would keep the visitors in front up until 2:39 into the final period when Filip Zadina scored to tie the game at 1 apiece.
Fans remained on the edge of their seats, hoping that the home team might get up. However hopes were dashed when Jonas Donskoi scored with 5:27 remaining in the 3rd to seal the deal at 2-1.
A great effort tonight by both team’s goalies. Ville Husso finished with 30 saves & Matt Murray of the Penguins finished with 28 for the win.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          3rd November, Colorado @ Detroit

Despite holding a 1-0 lead for 2 periods & outshooting their opposition 33 to 18, the Red Wings go down to the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 at home.
The Red Wings will rue missing their opportunities tonight after controlling the game for large patches, often keeping the Av’s on their back foot, yet yielding 2 goals in the final period.
For Ville Husso, his poor form continues. Tonight the Finnish goalie, only making 16 saves from the 18 shots faced. His poor start to the season grows & with 9 games played, the net minder’s current Goals Against Average (GAA) sits at 3.32 & save percentage sits at .885. Well below what the Stanley Cup winning goalie of last season is capable of.
Claude Giroux scored the Wings lone goal during the 1st period when it appeared the Wings had the game playing on their terms.
After tonight’s defeat, the red Wings Record now sits at 5-6-1

          3 Stars of the Game:

          5th November, Detroit @ Boston

The Red Wings drop their 3rd straight in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Boston Bruins.
The season continues to go pear shaped for Detroit, who do not appear to have any answers offensively for their opponents, again with no one standing up when needed.
Viktor Chistov tallies his 3rd loss from 4 starts. In a very familiar fashion from his last game, Chistov was backed up well by his defensemen, however with nothing happening offensively there wasn’t much the rookie net minder could do.
Darcy Kuemper records a handy shutout over a fellow division rival, whilst up forward, Bobby Ryan & Ryan Donato scored for the Bruins during the 1st period.
The Bruins last goal came with the Red Wings leaving the net empty, allowing James DeBrusk to score with only 1 second remaining.
Detroit seem to be in trouble, they will need to turn around their season quickly with a 5-7-1 record.
Tomorrow night the double header continues when they play Buffalo at Keybank Center

          3 Stars of the Game:

          6th November, Detroit @ Buffalo

Detroit stops the 3 game slide with a 6-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on night #2 of their road double header.
Filip Larsson was back to his best, scoring twice, plus earning an assist from a Dylan Larkin Goal.
Jake Muzzin left the ice in the final period, gripping his mid-section after being on the wrong side of a Casey Mittelstadt check near the corner. With the Red Wings down 1 man with Muzzin wincing in pain & the puck still in play, the Sabres were able to get their 2nd goal for the game whilst the Red Wings were short handed. A small consolation for the division leading Sabres, who had a game they would want to put behind them.

          8th November, Vancouver @ Detroit

The Red Wings have claimed a 2nd victory in a row with a close 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
The game went scoreless almost for 2 periods until the Wings number #1 Defenseman, Colton Parayko, scored in the 2nd period with only 1:35 remaining.
In the final period, the game went back & forth, with Mantha putting the Wings up by 2 early, only to have the gap reduced minutes later, with a goal from Brock Boeser. Kirby Dach then scored to put the Wings up by 2 with 11:41 remaining, however the Canucks kept pressing & Bo Horvat was able to find the back of the net to put the score at 3-2.
Although both teams pressed hard, neither team could add to their score and the game was completed with the Wings 3-2 victory.

          10th November, Washington @ Detroit

The Red Wings succumb to a 3rd period fade, allowing 3 unanswered goals to lose tonight’s home game 5-3 to the Washington Capitals.
The Wings controlled large portions of the 1st 2 periods, yet the score was locked at 2-2 at the final intermission.
During the final period, goals from Appleton, Ovechkin & Gersich killed any life in the Red Wings game & the visitors skated away with the victory.
Larsson & Spezza scored in the 1st period, at one point putting the Wings in front. However the Caps recovered & kept the Wings out of the net for the rest of the game.
Husso continues to have a shocker of a season, making 19 saves from 25 shots faced, whilst Robin Lehner made 30 saves in a great game from the Capitals number 1 starter.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          12th November, Buffalo @ Detroit

Fortunes have turned around of sorts for the Red Wings who claim a 5-4 come-from-behind shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
It is the 2nd time in less than 2 weeks that the Red Wings have defeated the Sabres & tonight it was well deserved, with the Sabres being the dominating team for most of the game & outshooting the Red Wings 41 to 28.
Detroit trailed for most of the game, until tying it up in the 2nd period with a late goal with 13 seconds remaining on the clock from Kirby Dach.
During the 2nd period, Husso appeared to strain an ankle during a stoppage, after consulting with the team doctor, the Wings changed out their goalie for Viktor Chistov as a precaution & the game resumed.
Sabres Center, Jack Eichel scored early in the 3rd to put the Sabres back in front 4-3, however with 4:03 remaining, Fredrik Larsson sent the puck into the back of the net to tie the game & force overtime.
With no score prevailing in overtime, the game went to a shootout.
Fredrik Larsson was the 1st player to break though as did rookie Defenseman Zachery Spezza, with only Joakim Nurminen from the Sabres being able to beat Vikto Chistov, who finally notches another win.
The Wings will wait nervously on the condition of Ville Husso

          13th November

          15th November, Detroit @ Ottawa

Fredrik Larsson scores with 2:42 remaining in the game to steal a 3-2 victory over Braden Holtby & the Ottawa Senators.
Detroit trailed 2-0 after the 1st period, after goals from Tomas Hertl & Sven Baertschi. During the 2nd period, Wings d-man, Colton Parayko scored to get the visitors within 1 of the Sen’s.
Early in the 3rd period Detroit’s Evgeny Svechnikov tied the game with a wrist shot from 12 feet out from the net, with Larsson scoring with precious little time remaining to steal the win for the Red Wings.

          3 Stars of the Game:

17th November, Detroit @ New Jersey

Team effort & great goaltending nets Detroit a 4-0 shutout victory over the New Jersey Devils on the road.
Viktor Chistov gets his 3rd win of the season & his 2nd career shout, stopping all 30 Devils shots on net.
Filip Zadina, Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi & Kirby Dach each scored in tonight’s road victory.

          3 Stars of the Game:
          Vickor Chistov - 30 saves
          Dylan Larkin - 1 goal, 1 assist
          Filip Zadina - 1 goal, 1 assist
          Apologies, lost the graphic…

          19th November, Detroit @ Columbus

The Red Wings have finally found themselves on a handy little win streak - picking up their 4th consecutive win with a 4-2 victory on the road against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
After a scoreless 1st period, the Blue Jackets struck 1st with a goal from Right Winger Cam Atkinson, however a goal from Larkin, then 2 from Larsson by the final intermission, put the Wings in the box seat for another win.
Skinner then scored to make it 4-1 early in the 3rd. Play went back & forth until finally Blue Jackets forward Kyle Turris broke through to bring the home team to within 2 however the Wings held on & take the win.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          21st November, Detroit @ Colorado

Detroit takes a big 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche, giving them win number 5 in a row.
Goals from Cholowski, Bertuzzi & Svechnikov gave the Wings a 3-0 lead which they almost carried into the 2nd intermission until Av’s forward Mikko Rantenen scored. Their only goal for the game with 0:39 left in the 2nd.
Claude Giroux scored on an empty net, with 14 seconds remaining in the final period to cap off the victory.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          23rd November, Toronto @ Detroit

The Red Wings 5 game winning streak comes to an end against the bottom team in the league, Toronto with a 3-1 loss.
The Leafs finally pick up their 3rd win of the season from 17 games & they did it easily in the end.
The game went scoreless through the 1st 2 periods & it was Detroit to score 1st & take the lead with 17:29 remaining in the 3rd, from a slap shot goal from Jake Muzzin.
The Wings lead did not last long, as Johnathan Tavares then scored his 1st of 2 goals to tie the game. Leafs D-man Timothy Liljegren then put the visitors in front with 13:00 remaining, with finally Tavares notching his 2nd with 5:04 to put the result beyond doubt.
Currently the Red Wings home record is in shabby condition at 4-6-1 from 11 games.

*Weird, this was the 2nd game where the simulation subbed out Husso & put in Chistov without Husso being injured...
It turned out, Husso played 33 minutes & made 20 saves from 20 shots. Chistov comes in, played the rest of the game - 27minutes & made only 9 saves from 12 shots faced on net. Expected to see a notification after the game for Husso being injured but nothing again... frustrating, there’s no need for the game to substitute my goalies in that situation. It cost us the game in this instance.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          25th November, Nashville @ Detroit

Detroit drops another home game, tonight shutout 1-0 to the Nashville Predators.
Kevin Fiala Was the game’s lone goal scorer, tallying it in the 1st period.
Both Husso & Preds Goalie, Joonas Korpisalo, faced 30 shots in what was an incredibly tighy game to watch.
The Red Wings went down to Nashville in October with the same 1-0 result, will the next game be such a close affair?
The Red Wings home woes continue with the record at Little Caesars Arena sitting at 4-7-1 from 12 games.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          27th November, Pittsburgh @ Detroit

Detroit snaps the lose streak at home with a tough 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Claude Giroux led the way for the Red Wings, scoring the game winning goal late in the 2nd period and tallying an assist.
Ville Husso continues to improve his season with 21 saves, notching another win.
Patric Hornqvist was the Penguins lone goal scorer. The right winger put his team in front early with the 1st goal of the game.

          29th November, Vegas @ Detroit

Givani Smith, Claude Giroux & Anthony Mantha each tally 2 goals in a huge 8-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights.
Vegas were in trouble early, when Givani Smith scored a short-handed goal in the 1st minute of play. That was followsd by more Red Wings goals, including 2 from power plays.
Vegas scored twice in the final period to gain some respect back however the Red Wings had already gone to coast mode by that time.
Anthony Mantha’s impact was huge tonight. The power forward tallied 3 assists, then scored in the final period to finish with a 4 point night.
Giroux, Larsson & Parayko also had a field day, each scoring 3 points for the game.

          31st November 2022,

          Wrap up:
November started poorly, however the team finally got on a decent run, winning 5 straight which helped set the tone for the month & helped us finish with a record of 9-6-0 from 15 games.
This helped us stay 3rd in the Atlantic Division. Luckily we have a great road record at 8-3-0, which counters our terrible home record - made just that little bit better with the 2 wins against the Penguins & Golden Knights at the end of the month. After 14 games at home we now have a record of 6-7-1.
A big positive sign to come out of this month is the vast improvement to our Penalty Killing which has raised from a league-worse 69% up to an average of 80%, all thanks to a number of changes.
As for general line chemistry, it is something we are still working with, especially when it comes to finding Fredrik Larsson a center that he can consistently perform well with. We have toyed around with Dach, Giroux & Larkin, all having stints with him, & the best set up appears to be Giroux on the 1st line, Dach on the 2nd & Larkin on the 3rd. This severely impacts Larkin’s ice time, so we give him time on the Power Play & on the Penalty Kill.
Larsson has the best chemistry with Anthony Mantha - which is great - meaning Mantha is the best choice to stay on the 1st line on the other wing.
December is another big month ahead & we go into it with plenty of confidence as the team begins to gel more.

          Injuries:
          6th November - D Jake Muzzin - Hip injury - missed 6 games

          Contract Extensions:
          9th November - C - Dylan Larkin - Signed 7 year Extension Contract @ $6M per year.
          13th November – G – Ville Husso – Signed 2 year Extension Contract @ $3.95M per year.

          31st November - C - Joe Veleno - Signed 4 year Extension Contract @ $3.725M per year

A number of key extension contracts signed this month. Jacob Trouba is one of the remaining key players left, however have not made a decision commencing discussions on renewal just yet.

            1st December, Ottawa @ Detroit

A classic divisional rivalry game that went down to the wire. The Red Wings have defeated the Senators 4-3 at Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings broke away early in the 1st with goals from Bertuzzi & Larsson, however Senators’ goals from Chabot & Namestikov had the game tied back ‪at 2-2 by the 2nd intermission.
During the 3rd period, it only took ‪1:06 of game time for Kirby Dach to find the back of the net from an impressive slap shot from out near the blue line. The adulation was extremely short lived however when only 14 seconds later, Senators’ Tomas Hertl scored to bring the game back to a tie ‪at 3-3.
The crowd didn’t have to wait long once more, when with ‪16:26 remaining, Defenseman Colton Parayko scored, putting the Wings in front 4-3.
Detroit managed to hold out the Senators from scoring again, giving the home team an extremely handy win over their adversary who was only 1 point behind in the standings ‪before tonight’s game.
Detroit did have one mishap tonight. Givani Smith was injured during the 2nd period and did not return to the game.

            3rd December, Detroit @ Toronto

Detroit holds on to take a 3-2 victory from the Toronto Maple Leafs on the road.
The Leafs had previously beaten the Senators for their 5th win of the season & looked to take another win from the Red Wings.
However the visiting Wings capitalised early, scoring 3 Goals in quick succession during the 1st period, from Bertuzzi, Svechnikov & Mantha which put the game firmly out of the Leafs hands.
Toronto did fight back & control large portions of the game, putting 40 shots on net & scoring twice to make it a close contest.
Ville Husso continues his redemption from the poor start to his season with 38 saves in tonight’s effort.

            5th December, Detroit @ Pittsburgh

A pair of goals from Phil Kessel helps the Penguins defeat the Red Wings 4-1 tonight at PPG Paints Arena.
Kessel scored goal #1 early in the 1st, followed not long after a goal from Olli Maatta, giving the home team a 2-0 lead heading into the 1st intermission.
The Red Wings fought back with a tap-in goal from Anthony Mantha to set the scene for an interesting final period.
However it was Phil Kessel again to score & put his Penguins up by 2, thus sealing the deal.
During the final seconds, Tom Kuhnhackl found the empty net to finish off the Red Wings with a 4-1 defeat.
Ville Husso was busy, he made 34 saves in tonight’s loss, whilst Matt Murray, as strong as ever, made a solid 26 saves for the win.

6th December, Detroit @ Tampa Bay

Anthony Mantha wins the game for the Red Wings, 2-1 over the Lightning during the Shootout.
Mantha scored the lone goal in the shootout over Jacob Markstrom to lift the Wings to the win.
The game that led up to the shootout was fast paced action aplenty with neither team being able to really capitalise on their opportunities.
JT Miller scored the game’s 1st goal late in the 2nd period to give the Bolts a 1-0 advantage going into the final period, however a penalty let the Red Wings back in the game & Filip Zadina scored to tie the game ‪at 1-1.
Regulation & Overtime went without further score & the final result with Mantha’s goal ensued.
Viktor Chistov stopped some of the best in the game during th shootout, taking the puck away from Kucherov & Stamkos on the way to a memorable win for the rookie.
Jacob Markstrom was equally impressive, in a busier night, making 34 saves for the Bolts in the SO Loss.

            8th December, Montreal @ Detroit

A great Atlantic Division tussle saw the 3rd placed Detroit Red Wings defeat 5th placed Montreal Canadiens 3-2 at Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings led 2-1 moving into the final period, after goals from Skinner & Dach.
Habs forward James O’Brien scored to tie the game 2-2 with ‪13:22 remaining to give the visitors a great chance of causing an upset. However Red Wings Captain, Dylan Larkin did what he does best & led from the front, scoring only shortly after with ‪11:15 remaining to steady the ship & put the Wings back in the lead.
No further score meant the Red Wings take away a much needed home win.
Viktor Chistov started his 2nd game in a row and put in another fantastic performance, making 33 saves & earned tonight’s 1st star award.

Red Wings send rights to Sbruev & 2024 3rd round pick to Edmonton & acquire 2024 1st Round pick

            ‪9th December 2022,

            The Trade Details:
            Detroit Trades:
            LW Boris Sbruev - 20yrs (63ovr Med Top6F GRN)
2024 Round 3 Draft Pick (following years Draft)
            & acquires from Edmonton:
2024 Round 1 Draft Pick (following years Draft)

Edmonton were sending us repeated offers for Boris Sbruev, however it always included Center, Radek Faksa who we really had no need for, plus a 2nd round 2024 draft pick (plus another minor one). So I decided to change it up - I originally asked for their 2023 1st round pick which they were not happy with. So I asked for the following year’s 1st round pick in 2024 which was on their trade block & they accepted.
With Sbruev’s Top 6 potential I was keen to keep him (my fault for leaving him on the trade block – got lazy), though with the opportunity for a 1st rounder in the following year after this one, it could yield a good selection depending on Edmonton’s continuing success.

            One of the many requests:

10th December, St Louis @ Detroit

The Blues have beaten the Red Wings convincingly tonight, 4-1 at Little Caesars Arena.
With both teams almost evenly poised in the standings on opposite conferences, it was an important game for both teams to win.
It was the Blues who had all the answers, getting a goal from Jaccob Slavin in the 1st, then followed by Jake Walman in the 2nd period. Then the Blues 2 league-leaders, Robby Fabbri & Victor Tarasenko hit their straps and put on a goal each to rout the home team.
Blues goalie Cory Schneider was instrumental in tonight’s win, making 33 saves.
For the Red Wings, only Joe Veleno found the back of the net mid-way through the 2nd period.
Ville Husso wasn’t good enough tonight after his return from a 2-game rest, making 30 saves.

            3 Stars of the Game:

            12th December, Carolina @ Detroit

Detroit have made a jaw dropping comeback, defeating Carolina 4-3 after a shootout.
Mid-way through the 3rd period (‪10:26 remaining) ‘Canes Center, Mark Necas scored from a tight angle to put the visitors in front 3-1. Understandably a lot of Red Wings fans took the decision to make an early exit for the car park to beat the rush home - Probably the biggest mistake they will have made for a long time, as the Red Wings fought back, first with a goal from Kirby Dach with ‪6:09 remaining. Then with ‪3:28 remaining, Andreas Athanasiou nailed the game tying goal from out near the blue line – the latter goal bringing the roof down with the cheers from the crowd that didn’t go home early.
Neither side could score in the remainder of regulation or overtime, sending the game to the shootout.
In the shootout, Hurricane’s Andrei Svechnikov, scored first, however thankfully Claude Giroux followed with a goal of his own, which was then followed by a successful attempt by Jeff Skinner to seal an unlikely win for the Wings.
In what could be bad news for Red Wings fans, Filip Zadina left the game only minutes into the 1st period after a fall to the ice & did not return to the game.

            15th December, Florida @ Detroit

The Red Wings sloppy play at home continues as struggling Florida demolish them 6-2.
The Red Wings scored the game’s 1st goal very early from a great individual effort from Kirby Dach, however afterward it appeared the home team put the cue in the rack & didn’t put up much fight from there, as the Panthers proceeded to pile on 5 unanswered goals through to the final period. Panthers Defenseman, Aaron Ekblad & 2nd year sensation, George Matheson both led from the front with 2 goals each.
Wings’ Fredrik Larsson finally netted a goal after many games without a score, which was all but in junk time.
After Larsson’s goal, Panthers forward, Vincent Trouchek got one more puck past Ville Husso, who had a shocker tonight, with ‪3:08 remaining.

            18th December, Detroit @ Minnesota

The Red Wings blow a 3-2 lead late in the final period to lose 4-3 to the Minnesota Wild on the road.
‪3:18 into the 2nd period, Joe Veleno scored the Red Wings 3rd goal for the game, giving the visitors a commanding 3-1 lead, however a defensive bumble late in the 2nd let the Wild in the door with a late goal from Eriksson to make the score 3-2 in the Red Wings favour, moving into the final period.
The game went scoreless, until with ‪7:39 remaining, Wild’s Luke Kunin tied it up with a wrist shot that beat Viktor Chistov, then within a minute of resumed play, Jake McCabe put another puck past Chistov to steal the lead and the game away from the Red Wings.
The Red Wings found it hard to put a shot on net tonight, only managing to make 22 attempts, whilst the Wild put on 35 shots including a big 3rd period that tipped the scale.
Veleno was great for the Wings tonight, however he needs more help from his higher paid teammates who play more minutes.

            20th December, Detroit @ Edmonton

The Red Wings nail a good 4-1 win against one of this season’s best teams in the Edmonton Oilers.
Detroit had all the play at their end, largely after the 1st period, outshooting Edmonton 42 to 21 & were able to convert tonight without giving up goals on poor defensive choices.
Kirby Dach was the Wings best tonight, tallying 2 goals in the win.
Rookie Vitali Goldobin played in his 1st career game, playing just shy of 11 minutes, finishing even with 3 shots on goal & 2 hits.
Oilers Captain Connor McDavid was the lone goal scorer for his team.

22nd December, Detroit @ San Jose

The Red Wings survive a late scare from San Jose, thanks to an overtime goal from Dylan Larkin to give the visitors a 4-3 victory.
Larkins Overtime winner may not have been necessary if were not for Sharks forward Miles Wood Scoring a brilliant goal with only 39 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game. However it only took Larkin 54 seconds in overtime to end the resistance put up by the Sharks.
Fredrik Larsson finally found the net tonight, scoring twice in the Red Wings win. Claude Giroux played well, setting up Larsson in both of his goals & Larkin also had a 2 point night with an assist, plus his game winning goal in OT .

            24th December, Detroit @ Vancouver

Detroit have proven to be Vancouver’s Christmas Grinch with the Red Wings defeating the Canucks 4-0.

Dach, Larsson & Foote were instrumental in the win, each recording a goal & an assist in the victory. Anthony Mantha was the Red Wings other goal scorer.

            29th December, Columbus @ Detroit

Detroit are yet again victorious in the shootout - another close game with a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings again were the dominant team on the ice. However, as has been a common feature this season, moving into the final period, they were trailing the Blue Jackets 3-2.
The final period was beginning to look like a dead rubber with neither side gaining much momentum, until with only ‪3:25 remaining, Claude Giroux scored the equaliser which forced extra time.
With no successor in the overtime period, the game went to the shootout, with the Red Wings keeping their good shootout record intact with Larsson & Mantha scoring to win the game.
Mantha played exceptionally well & is a deserved candidate for tonight’s 1st star award with a goal (during regulation) & an assist.

            31st December, Boston @ Detroit

The Red Wings have closed out 2022 with a great comeback victory, 4-3 over 1st placed Boston, to equal them & Buffalo at the top of the Atlantic Division on 49 points.
The Bruins scored all 3 of their goals before the Red Wings even tallied their 1st for the game. Jake DeBrusk & Brad Marchand scored in the 1st period & Filip Forsberg netting an extremely early goal in the 2nd period with only 23 seconds expired from the clock.
It was from this point, with Boston up 3-0, in the 2nd period that Red Wings began to rally & Larsson scored with ‪11:44 remaining to make the score 3-1, though with Boston still firmly in control, moving into the final period.
With the final period under way the Detroit offensive pressure stepped up another notch & with ‪4:31 off the clock, Claude Giroux netted a cracking one-timer to bring the score to 3-2.
Another 8 minutes of game time went through without any further score, until Andreas Athanasiou netted the puck from an almost impossible angle near the right-hand corner tying the game ‪at 3-3.
Finally, with ‪5:08 remaining in the 3rd, Athanasiou again scored to put the Red Wings in front, completing an unlikely comeback.
Athanasiou was surely tonight’s star of the game with his 2 game winning goals. Giroux & Larsson also featured prominently, each tallying a goal, plus an assist to each other’s goals.
Ville Husso redeemed himself with a strong finish, initially allowing 3 goals from Boston’s 1st 10 shots on net, to then closing the net down & making 26 saves for the game.

            Wrap up:
Nearly halfway through the season & the Red Wings have found another gear. The last win of the month - which was also the 5th win in a row - helped put the Wings at the top of the Atlantic Standings, tied with Boston & Buffalo.
Currently 2 points is all that stands between 1st (Pittsburgh) & 7th (NY Islanders) in the Eastern Conference.
The team’s ability to win during the shootout this season has been impressive so far - having only lost the very 1st shootout of the season against the Oilers in October - they have won the last 4 contested, including 3 in December.

            Muzzin’s Happy again
After returning from injury, we gave Jake a couple of pep talks & now he seems to be finding his mojo again. I’ll keep an eye on him, but for now, any potential trade ideas regarding him are likely off the table.

Yeh it's close for sure! The race to the playoffs will be interesting.
I haven't played for a couple of days but looking forward to playing this weekend, about to post some extra stuff that I've had sitting waiting to be cleaned up.
Goldobin did alright, though no goals or assists to his name. He should have a decent future ahead I think. As the month ended, Zadina came off the Injury reserve on Jan 1st so I had to reassign Goldobin to Grand Rapids. Zads wont play until he is 100% fit.

                  Wrap up:

The Griffins have hit the mid-point of the season & are in sizzling form. Although they are not the highest scoring team in the league, they are the strongest defensive team with an impressive team average of only 1.86 Goals Against Per Game - the best in the AHL.
This season there are a number of players doing their part & contributing to the current success.
Forwards: Rookie skater Vitali Goldobin has been a brilliant go-to guy & for his efforts, was assigned to the NHL for 2 weeks, before being recalled on the 1st January upon Filip Zadina's return.
The feature game against the Ice Hogs was his 1st game back for the Griffins after playing 5 games with the Red Wings.
Leading the team in assists & points is 1st line Right Wing, Tomas Hyka. Currently Hyka has 27 assists from 32 games, he is proving to be a good leader and stablemate player for the Griffs.
Emanuel Comrie is on the verge of an NHL career, however will be finding it hard to break into the Red Wings team without injury affecting the team. He has had another solid season & deserves every minute on the 1st line alongside Goldobin & Comrie.
Defense: There is an impressive group led by new player & veteran Michael Stone . Stone’s NHL career has helped him play above his level at the Griffins, however a berth with the Red Wings is unlikely with the waiting list of other prospects hoping for a game. Other players in defense putting in the big effort are NHL prospects, Brandon Mestre & Gustav Lindstrom, plus experienced veterans Dylan McIlrath & Michael Paliotta.
Finally in net: Marcus Hogberg is playing a career best season with 22 wins from 29 starts, he is sporting an exceptionally impressive Goals Against Average which is 1.75 for the season.

The Griffins have had plenty of regular season success over the past number of years. If the good run continues, let’s hope the Griff’s can have a deep run in the playoffs – something which they have failed to do over the past 5 seasons since winning the 2017 Calder Cup.

                  Current Injury List:
                  20th December - D Michael Paliotta - Ankle Injury Missed 5 games - returning 9th January
2nd January - D Aleksander Petrov - fractured Jaw - set to miss 2 weeks

                    Scout’s Report:

Although our head scout has reported a generally weak year for prospects, this year will boast a generational talent in Right Winger, Mika Voutilainen from Finland, plus a number of other top talented players tipped to go within the top 10 picks.
If anything, I am seeing some real gems that are dotted throughout the list, my prediction is this could be a better draft than last year for us.

You aiming for a top two pick in teh draft? That Ledin looks hella good too with magic hans and a 200 ft game.

How do you do your scouting to get as much intel on the players as possible before the draft? As a rookie on the franchise mode, I whiffed big time the last draft as I only had a full report on like two or three of the players ranked in the top 15 if I remember right.

EDIT: Just found your post here: https://forums.operationsports.com/f...32&postcount=2 Great read! Will for sure pick up on things from there.

Haha I wish I could get a top 2 pick, but I think those days are gone now.

I posted my method for scouting here a little while back:https://forums.operationsports.com/f...-scouting.html
It’s pretty important to not leave scouts idle with no assignment, anyway hope that helps

Before this second season of my franchise, I found theese two threads on reddit that I looked at and tried to combine the tips. Will se how that pans out, currently one monthe left of the three month prospect search.

                            https://www.reddit.com/r/EA_NHL/comm...hise_scouting/
                            https://www.reddit.com/r/EA_NHL/comm...ccessfully_in/

Will se how much that gives me and maybe do another long search for prospects and then towards the end of the season, after the trading deadline go heavy on the specific player scouting.

                              2nd January, Detroit @ Vegas

What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas. The Red Wings leave town handing the Golden Knights a 6-2 defeat at T-Mobile Arena.
Fredrik Larsson was on fire early, scoring twice in the 1st period, then completed his hat-trick only 4:15 into the 2nd period - pushing his season tally to 25 goals in 40 games.
The Wings had the game blown out to 5-0 mid-way through the 2nd before Golden Knight’s D-man Kimmo Laatikainen scored, Followed closely by another goal from Gabriel Landeskog to give the home crowd something to smile about.
Anthony Mantha scored in the dying minutes of the 2nd period to send the score to 6-2.
The Golden Knights stemmed the bleeding in the final period which saw no further score added from either side, however the Red Wings will have to be feeling positive after tonigh’s game.
Rookie net minder Viktor Chistov tallies the win & makes 22 saves.

                              5th January, Detroit @ Arizona

1 minute of bad play costs the Red Wings dearly tonight with a 2-1 loss to the Arizona Coyotes on the road.
Fredrik Larsson scored with 6:34 in the 2nd period to go up 1-0 as the Wings dominated possession of the puck all game.
It was at 12:39 remaining in the 3rd period when 2 poor skill errors cost the Red Wings the game. First a goal from Brendan Perlini, when he stripped Zachery Spezza of the puck, breaking away to score. Then exactly 60 seconds later, Jordan Eberle intercepted a sloppy pass near centre ice, again breaking away to score & give the Coyotes a win that perhaps they shouldn’t have been able to take.
Ville Husso would have to be unhappy with his Defensemen tonight, having only faced 19 shots on net & giving up those 2 critical goals.
At the other end, Tukka Rask was solid for the Coyotes, making 35 saves for a huge win.

The Red Wings bounce back with another big win. Tonight it was a 6-1 victory over the struggling Calgary Flames, who sit flat at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.
Fredrik Larsson scored twice, giving the recently named 2-time-all-star, 7 goals over the last 3 games.
Joe Veleno, Dylan Larkin, Jeff Skinner & Colton Parayko were the other goal-getters for the Wings in the big win.
For the Flames, Matthew Tkachuk scored his team’s lone goal.
Chistov was given his 2nd start in 3 games & tallied his 2nd straight win as the rookie appears to be finding his feet in the league.
Tonight was a huge night for another of the Red Wings rookies, with Zachery Spezza tallying a career high 3 assists.

After a heated & tied game after 3 periods, it only took 25 seconds for Flyers center, German Rubtsov to beat Viktor Chistov gloveside to eke out a 2-1 overtime win over the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.
Givani Smith, in his 1st game back after 20 games on the sidelines, scored the Red Wings lone goal - short-handed - mid-way through the 1st period to give the Wings the lead, however his goal was soon countered by Flyers D-man Shayne Gostisbehere.
The rest of regulation went without score, sending the game to overtime, where Rubtsov put the only shot on net & stole a big win away from the Wings.
Rookie net minder Chistov takes the OTL in a decent effort, making 23 saves.
Again it was the Red Wings putting up a multitude of shots and not converting. Tonight Flyers Goalie, Carter Hart put in a star performance, making 33 saves in the win.

12th January, NY Rangers @ Detroit

Detroit holds onto a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers, after a late push that saw a great close finish between 2 original 6 teams.
The Rangers held a 1st period lead after a goal from Tuevo Terravainen, scored whilst on a breakaway.
The Red Wings fought back in the 2nd period. Fredrik Larsson was credited a goal after the puck touched his shin & deflected into the net, off a Zachery Spezza slap shot.
In the final period Wings Captain, Dylan Larkin finally broke the deadlock with a slick snap shot & with 2:52 remaining, Defenseman Colton Parayko scored to put the Wings in front by 2.
The Rangers pulled Vasilevskiy with just over a minute remaining & were rewarded with a late goal from Libor Hajek to reduce the Lead to 1.
The Rangers pressed again however the Red Wings held on to take the win.
It’s another nervous wait for Filip Zadina who was injured in only 4th game back since recovering from his last injury. Zadina was checked into the boards from behind, with only 2:36 left in the game by Defenseman Radko Gudas. Zadina disappeared down the race not long after & did not return for the victory skate.

The Senators score 2 late 3rd period goals to force overtime & then capitalise in the shootout to produce a big 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the Red Wings.
With 12 minutes remaining in the 3rd period the Red Wings had just got themselves out to a commanding 5-3 lead. However their hosts, the Senators were not done yet & staged a brilliant comeback with goals from Logan Brown & Mark Stone to tie the game, ultimately sending the game into overtime, then the shootout.
It was Stone again to seal the game for the home team, the experience forward netting the only shootout goal in the session.
It was a big night for both Husso & Holtby in net. Husso facing 38 shots with 33 saves & Holtby, the eventual victor, facing 35 shots with 30 saves.
Fredrik Larsson & Evgeny Svechnikov both scored 2 goals in tonight’s loss.

The Red Wings turn the tables from last night’s defeat, thanks to a very late Claude Giroux goal with 12 seconds remaining in the 3rd period. With the game going to the shootout, the Wings defeat the Washington Capitals 5-4.
The Visiting Red Wings had dug themselves a hole early, when by midway through the 2nd period they were trailing the Caps 3-0.
However thanks to 2 late 2nd period goals from Dach & Svechnikov, the Wings were able to set themselves up for a big final period of which Larsson scored to tie the game.
That adulation was short lived, when with only 6 minutes remaining on the 3rd period clock, Jimmy Lockhart scored to put the Caps back in front by 1 with the score at 4-3 in the Caps favour.
The game appeared all but firmly over with a Cap’s win nearly marked in the book when with only 12 seconds remaining, Claude Giroux nailed a goal to tie it up.
After a scoreless overtime period, the shootout ensued. Martin Frk was the only player to find the back of the net past either goalie & the Red Wings steal a massive win over a conference rival.
Defenseman Jacob Trouba was inured in tonight’s matchup & will be awaiting scans on his foot as a result.

The Red Wings mount a big comeback in the 3rd period to tie the game, however Patrick Laine snuffs out the resistance with a late goal to push the Jets to a 6-5 victory.
Viktor Chistov got the start in net - it turned out to be a busy night for the rookie & the red lamp, as he faced 42 shots on net, whilst allowing 6 goals to wear the loss.
Jets forward’s Patrick Laine & Mark Scheifele both added a pair of goals to their tallies, including Laine’s game winner. Scheifele also contributed 3 assists for a huge 5-point night.

Detroit is victorious in a close one - 2-1 over the Florida Panthers at home.
The Panthers took the lead in the 1st period after Corey Perry scored on a wrist shot from directly in front of the net.
The Lead didn’t last, when in the 2nd period Claude Giroux clutched the equaliser.
Mid way through the final period Fredrik Larsson, who has an excellent streak running over the past number of games, scored his 34th goal for the season & ultimately gave the Red Wings the win.
Ville Husso returned to the crease and played great with 29 saves, whilst James Reimer almost as good at the other end making 27 saves.
With tonight’s win the Red Wings move to 29-16-3 & maintain their 2nd place in the Atlantic Division, 2 points behind the Bruins

The Red Wings go into the All-Star Weekend with a poor 3-2 loss at home to the Calgary Flames who have just managed their 16th win of the season.
The Wings let the Flames blow the game out to a 3-1 lead before Claude Giroux found the net only seconds into the final period to make the game close & to give the Red Wings every chance of coming back. However the home team could not affect the scoreboard any further and take a loss.
The Red Wings now head into a 10 day break with this year’s All Star weekend to be held here at Little Caesars Arena.

                              27th - 29th January - 2023 All Star Weekend @ Detroit
This was the big year for Little Caesars Arena to host the NHL All-Star Weekend.
Representing the hosts were Fredrik Larsson, Colton Parayko & Ville Husso

                              Wrap up:
With a record of 5-3-2 over the 10 games played this month, I didn’t think the team played all that bad (aside from the very last game against Calgary…). We sit 3rd in the Atlantic, only a stones throw away from the top & a comfortable gap in front of 4th placed Montreal.
Fredrik Larsson has had a heck of a run over the last 10 games with 12 goals & 3 assists. It has been a welcome sight to see the 1st line gelling.
I believe we still lack in our defensive core –we have great players in our lineup – we just seem to miss an X-factor player there. Having said this I will elaborate more below.

Trade Deadline Looms next month - Looking at options on Defenseman:
With Trade Deadline coming up on the 28th February this season, it is time to consider if we need to make any changes or improvements to our lineup.
Our biggest deficiency, I believe, is we are perhaps short a Top 2 Defenseman to pair with Colton Parayko – someone we can depend on in high pressure moments, I think we are missing that. With that in mind, there are a number of big name D-Men on the trade block.
Here are the major contenders that we could possibly pursue:

                              Ummmm, Ok?:
Kooky game mechanics. Not the 1st time I have seen this in game....

“You’re kinda injured right now Jacob....could that be a lead cause to the current lack of ice time? Take your walking stick & GET OUT OF MY OFFICE!”

                              Injuries:
12th January - RW Filip Zadina - Abdominal strain - missed 3 games, returned to playing
                              15th January - D Jacob Trouba - Foot Injury - Missed 3 games(thanks to All-Star break)

                              Contract Extensions:
                              Nil

                              Call Ups/ Assignments:
1st January – LW Vitali Goldobin – Reassigned to Grand Rapids Griffins.

Projected Lines - 1st February, Detroit Red Wings @ New Jersey Devils

Great Stuff! I finally gave up on the morale thing and shut it off. Its amazing how they get depressed after going to the conference finals.

And got a new drafting strategy...go after the gems!
