Game Results, News & Team Updates::

2nd March, New Jersey @ Detroit

Someone obviously reminded the Red Wings they were playing the bottom team in the league, as the home side embarrasses the Devils to a 10-2 annihilation.
Goals came from every angle with 9 different goal scorers - 4 of them defensemen.
Anthony Mantha finally found the back of the net & was the only multiple goal scorer, finishing with 2 goals & an assist.
Filip Zadina was brilliant with a goal & 3 assists, with Kirby Dach & Evgeny Svechnikov both tallying a 3 point game, with a goal and 2 assists each.
Tonight’s tally of 10 in one game, is only 3 goals less than the Red Wings 13 goals scored throughout the month of February.
All that is required is for the Red Wings to hold onto this momentum, their next game is at home against the Ottawa Senators in 2 days.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        4th March, Ottawa @ Detroit

The Red Wings pick up a 2nd consecutive win with a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators.
Anthony Mantha scored his 3rd goal in 2 games, when arly in the 1st period, he put the puck in the net from a tight angle.
Senators Center, Colton Sissons, scored late in the 1st period to tie the game, however that would be the visitor’s one & only goal for the game, with Ville Husso continuing a fantastic season, making 39 saves on his way to being named the game’s 1st star.
The Red Wings are really finding scoring opportunities from their defensemen over the past two games, with Muzzin, Green & Hicketts all finding the back of the net during the 3rd period.
Mantha continues a great start to March with another goal & assist added to his total.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        6th March, Toronto @ Detroit

After trailing 2-0 early, the Red Wings score 4 unanswered goals to beat divisional rivals, the Maple Leafs 4-2.
Mounting tonight’s comeback is Anthony Mantha with a goal late in the 1st period, then another in the 2nd. Mantha appears to have found a gear again, now with 7 points (4g,3a) from the last 3 games.
Jeff Skinner, who has played on the 2nd line over the last 3 games, has finally found a way to score.
Martin Letestu & William Nylander scored Toronto’s goals, which were both early in the 1st period.
Tonight completes the Red Wings lengthy 6 game home-stand which included the tail-end of the disastrous month of February, however since the beginning of March they turned it around nicely, winning the next 3 games straight to finish out with a 4-2-0 stand.
The Wings now hit the road for the 1st of 3 away games tomorrow night in Carolina.

        7th March, Detroit @ Carolina

Detroit completes the Home / away double header with 2 wins as they pull out a 3-2 shootout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Anthony Mantha, who is back in form, scored the game tying goal with 7:11 remaining in the 3rd period, beating former goalie teammate, Petr Mrazek.
Jonathan Bernier, who has been backing up Ville Husso for the lion share of the 2nd half of this season, finally got himself a victory after a number of games gone begging during the recent slump. Bernier made 23 saves for the game.
No score would eventuate in overtime and in the shout out, Dylan Larkin scored the only goal to give the Wings their 4th consecutive win.

        3 Stars of the Game:

9th March, NY Islanders @ Detroit

The Red Wings perfect start to March remains intact, but only just as they defeat the Islanders 4-3 in the shootout.
Mantha, Skinner & Larkin all scored during the shootout in a dominant display.
However in regulation, it was the Red Wings who had to play catch up, at one stage during the 2nd period, they trailed by 2 goals, with the score at 3-1.
Mantha steadied the ship late in the 2nd, scoring to reduce the Islanders lead to 1, then early in the 3rd period, Michael Rasmussen scored to tie the game at 3 apiece.
Tonight was Bernier’s 2nd consecutive start & win, with the veteran making 31 saves.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        11th March, Detroit @ Colorado

Detroit chalks up win #6 on the trot with a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. After a scoreless 1st period, the Red Wings were able to score twice, with goals coming from Svechnikov & Bertuzzi. The Av’s goal coming from Nate McKinnon.
Kirby Dach netted another during the 3rd to make a 2 goal buffer, which was tested a little later when Alex Killorn scored to bring the difference back to 1.
The Red Wings now head back home where they will take on the NY Islanders for the 2nd of 3 games this month.

        3 Stars of the Game:

13th March, NY Islanders @ Detroit

The Red Wings suffer an embarrassing 8-5 loss to the Islanders at home.
Taylor Hall scores a hat-trick in the high scoring affair, which saw the 2nd-bottom side in the NHL demolish the team with 3rd best record in the NHL.
Rookie Kirby Dach left the ice after a hard knock & did not return. It is believed the young star Center was rested for the rest of the game as a precaution.
Ville Husso got the start in net, however was replaced after the Islanders 5th goal. Bernier fared no better, allowing 3.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        16th March, Detroit @ Philadelphia

The message from coach Jeff Blashill to his players after the loss to the Islanders was obviously well received, as the Red Wings dominate the league-leading Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 on the road.
The Red Wings 1st line appears to be back in action with Skinner scoring during the 1st period & Mantha scoring twice during the 3rd.
Mantha’s 2 goals brings his season total to 30, marking the 1st time in the star winger’s career he has hit this total.
Ville Husso recovered well from his terrible last outing, making 32 saves in tonight’s victory.
The Flyers who have the best record in the league, in front of fellow Metropolitan rival, the Capitals, could not find any answers tonight & Sean Couturier was the home team’s only goal scorer.
Oddly enough, tonight’s loss, still locked in a Playoffs spot for the Flyers, the 1st team to qualify with 10 games to go.

18th March, Detroit @ NY Rangers

The Red Wings are defeated 4-2 by the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
The Wings gave up way too many penalties in tonight’s game, accumulating 21 minutes compared to their opponent’s 4 minutes. Anthony Mantha’s 5 minute boarding penalty proving the most costly during the 2nd period, with the Wing’s giving up 2 power play goals during that time served whilst on the Penalty Kill.
Evgeny Svechnikov & Andreas Athanasiou were the Wings scorers in tonight’s game, with Mika Zibanejad leading the way for the Rangers, finding the back of the net twice.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        20th March, Detroit @ Ottawa

The Red Wings lose their second straight on the road in tonight’s 3-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators.
Anthony Mantha scored the Red Wings lone goal for the game during the 1st period, with Braden Holtby then playing rock solid for the remainder of the game, on his way to making 28 saves.
Ville Husso has another tough night, making 27 saves in what was still a modest effort from the rookie.
The Senators 3 goals came from Namestikov, Ryan & Smith.
Red Wings left winger, Evgeny Svechnikov left the ice part way through the final period & did not return to the bench after receiving a tough check into the boards by Bobby Ryan.
Tonight’s loss sees the Red Wings move down to 3rd on the ladder with the Playoffs race intensifying.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        22nd March, Detroit @ Boston

The Red Wings manage to force OT and a shootout, however the Boston Bruins prevail 3-2 after the shootout.
Dylan Larkin & Kirby Dach were the Red Wings goal-getters, with Dach scoring the game tying goal with 6:21 remaining in the 3rd period.
It hasn’t been the best of road trips for the Red Wings, going 1-2-1 over the 4 game stand.

        23rd March 2021,

        24th March, Pittsburgh @ Detroit

Detroit has won a thriller, 3-2 over Pittsburgh after a shootout.
Despite being outshot 45 - 28, the Red Wings have found a way to beat the fellow Wild Card holder, first with a game tying goal from Dylan Larkin with 4:20 remaining in the 3rd, then scoring twice in the shootout thanks to Mantha & Skinner.
Jonathan Bernier was the definite saviour for the Red Wings, making a huge 43 saves & blocking all shots faced in the shootout.
A groin tweak to rookie Defenseman, Callan Foote was the only sour note from tonight’s Victory.

        27th March, Ottawa @ Detroit

The Red Wings put in another stellar performance with a 4-2 victory over the Senators.
In his return from injury, Evgeny Svechnikov scored twice & tallied an assist to Filip Zadina’s goal, deservedly earning the game’s 1st star award.
Rookie Center Kirby Dach was brilliant also, tallying 3 assists to earn the 2nd star.
Tonight’s victory shifts the Red Wings to 2nd in the Atlantic with Tampa Bay & Boston only trailing by a single point.

        3 Stars of the Game:

        28th March, Detroit @ Montreal

2 empty net goals blows out the final score, the Red Wings win a close one, 3-0 over the Montreal Canadiens.
It was Shea Weber’s first game against his old team, with the home crowd giving their former captain plenty of respect by applauding him every time he came onto the ice. Weber put in a solid game with 24:06 ice time & 4 hits.
Rookie Defenseman Callan Foote scored his 2nd career goal during the 1st period - it would be the only even strength goal for the entire game.
The Habs rolled the dice during the final stages of the last period, pulling goalie Kari Lehtonen, however the Red Wings broke away twice & landed goals from Svechnikov & Zadina.
Ville Husso earned his 4th shutout for the season, putting in a great effort, saving all 26 shots on net.

30th March, Detroit @ NY Islanders

The Red Wings met the Islanders for the 3rd & final time this month & have come away with a big 7-2 victory. The Red Wings made up for the previous time the 2 teams met, earlier this month, in Detroit by giving the rebuilding Islanders a good beating.
Ex Wing Net minder, Jimmy Howard was busy in net facing 40 shots compared to Ville Husso facing only 25.
Filip Zadina led all scorers with 2, however none on the ice had a bigger night than Jeff Skinner, who scored once & tallied 4 assists in a brilliant game from the winger.
In a small blow for the Red Wings, Evgeny Svechnikov suffered his 2nd injury this month, leaving the game in the 1st period clutching his knee.

        Wrap up:
After the painful month that was February, the Red Wings have turned it around to have a largely successful month in March - & we are playoffs bound!
In what was a promising sign, the 1st line found their mojo again & really contributed to the scoreboard.
The Addition of Shea Weber is going well so far, he has added another level of defensive depth with his hardcore style of play & it appears to be rubbing off onto the younger players also. With 4 games to go that will be played in the space of only 5 days, it will be an intensive finish. Let’s go Red Wings!

4 Games to go, Just 1 point from 1st Place!:
Who would have thought the red Wings would be sitting at this end of the field by the end of the season. Regardless of how the last 4 games play out, this has been a major leap forward for the franchise.
It can’t have been done without the hard work from our veterans & the early development of ome of our up & coming stars. Even better yet, the team could possibly gain another top 10 draft pick through the acquisition of Colorado’s 1st round pick prior to pre-season.
Let’s hope the boys can keep the momentum going.

Game Results, News & Team Updates::

1st April, Detroit @ St Louis

During the 3rd period, the Red Wings give up 3 goals in the space of 1 minute & 47 seconds to lose tonight’s game 3-1 against the St Louis Blues.
The capitulation came extremely early in the 3rd period after the Wings started the period in front 1-0 after a goal from Jeff Skinner during the 2nd period.
Ivan Barbashev scored twice & Jaden Schwartz netted one in a game where the Red Wings lost their momentum extremely fast.
Tonight’s loss keeps the Red Wings in 2nd place in the Atlantic for now.
With 3 games remaining, the Wings play the 1st game of 3 in 3 days, which is at home against the 3rd placed Boston Bruins, who have one game to play & trail Detroit by 1 point.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          3rd April, Boston @ Detroit

The Red Wings take a decisive 4-0 victory over the Boston Bruins, in what could be a preview of the 1st round of playoffs other results pending.
With tonight’s victory, the Red Wings are guaranteed at least 2nd in the Atlantic Division, finishing in front of tonight’s opponent, Boston & also Tampa Bay, who have lost their 2nd last game to fall 3 points behind.
Ville Husso was solid all night making 25 saves & earning his 5th shutout in his rookie season.
The Wings 2nd line were on fire with all-star Rookie Kirby Dach & winger Filip Zadina both recording a goal & an assist.
Late in the 3rd period, Jeff skinner scored an empty net goal to put the Wings up 3-0 & Martin Frk tallied a very late goal with Tuuka Rask back in the net with 19seconds remaining, when Kuhnhackl & Frk broke away on a 2 on 1 play.
Mathematically, the Red Wings can finish on top of the Atlantic if the Maple Leafs lose their last game & Red Wings win their last 2 games on the road against Columbus & Florida.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          Game Pics:
          Spoiler

          4th April, Detroit @ Columbus

The Red Wings will have to be content with 2nd place in the Atlantic after going down 3-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
During the 3rd period, Martin Frk tied the game 2-2 with 4:19 remaining which would send most games to overtime, however a lapse in the Wings defense allows Anthony Duclair to steal the puck away from Joe Hicketts in front of the net & score to snatch victory with 3:07 remaining.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          5th April, Detroit @ Florida

The Red Wings give up 2 goals in the 3rd period & cant get it done in extra time, going down 3-2 to the Florida Panthers after the shootout.
For the Panthers it’s a good finish for a dismal season, for the Red Wings its a chance to carry some momentum into their 1st playoffs series in 4 years gone begging.
Tyler Bertuzzi scored in the 1st period & Callan Foote scored in the 2nd period to give the Wings a commanding lead going into the final period, however Mike Hoffman & Keith Yandle each capitalised on their opportunities to tie the ledger. Ultimately it won the Panthers the game with the home side outscoring the Wings 2-1 in the Shootout.
The Red Wings were already set into 2nd place with tonight’s Shootout loss, not affecting their final placing.

That’s it for the regular season, thebRed Wings goo back to Little Caesars Arena where they will face a tough finals series against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team that Yzerman built as GM only years ago.

          3 Stars of the Game:

          Wrap up:
We didn’t have a great finish to the season, however with Svechnikov returning for Game 1, the Red Wings go into the Playoffs with a full strength side, plus we were competitive & that’s all I can ask.
It’s been quite the Cinderella run for the team this year, going from not expecting win any more games than the previous two seasons, to sitting near the top of the Atlantic Division standings all year.
The team has encountered some great rookie revelations this season, with Kirby Dach leading all rookies in scoring (& nearly all other categories), Defenseman Callan Foote playing on our 1st pairing for most of the season with Muzzin (until Weber’s arrival) & Ville Husso taking the primary starting job, & winning 29 games from 46 games played, including 5 shutouts.
Even though we have the home ice advantage in round 1 against the Lightning, I believe we will be going in as the massive underdogs, purely from the Lightning’s years of playoffs experience, compared to our very limited playoffs experience. Either way I’m proud of these boys for getting to where we are this season.

Ville Husso – A fantastic Rookie Season:
The original expectation was that Bernier would play most games this season, however Husso began to make a name for himself early on & he was too hard to ignore. Hopefully his game develops some more over the years & we could have an elite goalie on our hands.

          Injuries:
30th March - LW Evgeny Svechnikov - Knee Injury - Missed all 4 games this month - Will return for game 1 against Tampa Bay.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs Begin - The Playoffs Picture:
          The battle lines are drawn.

The Detroit Red Wings take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in Round 1 – Can Detroit match it with the likes of Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, Victor Hedman & Andrej Vasilevskiy?

Washington & Pittsburgh go at it again with what should be another classic series between these 2 old powerhouses.

In the Western Conference, 4 of the top 8 teams are Canadian. Can one of them (as well as Toronto in the East) finally snap the drought since 1993 & bring home a Stanley Cup for Canada?

              Wrap up:

As stated above in the introduction, the Griffins recovered remarkably well in the 2nd half of this season to lock themselves into another playoffs berth.
This year has been a great testing ground for Joe Veleno who is in the 1st year of his senior career. The young Center picked up the pace later in the year, eventually earning the right to be permanently on the team’s 1st line.
Matt Puempel joined the Griffins late after being assigned by the Red Wings, missing the 1st 15 games of the season. In 61 games he scored 28 goals, only 7 off the league leader. If he had played the entire season, it might have been him getting a trophy at the awards ceremony, definitely impressed with his standard of play.
In defense we had Jared McIsaac & Chris Bigras on the 1st pairing, who without a doubt could have played NHL comfortably. McIsaac started with the Red Wings & then was assigned in favour of Joe Hicketts moving up. McIsaac didn't appreciate the demotion, however he put his mind to work & has a delivered a solid season here in Grand Rapids. I'll be extremely surprised to see him back here next season, hopefully the Red Wings will be calling.
The real surprise package in defense has been Gustav Lindstrom, who from the 2nd pairing for most of the season, led the team in assists & points. Lindstrom will be applying a lot of pressure from below for a start in the NHL also.
There have been a number of other players developing well within our system, all part of the breeding ground for the Red Wings – the future is looking bright.

The Calder Cup Playoffs Begin – The Playoffs picture:

The Griffins take on the Rockford Ice Hogs in Round 1 of the Calder Cup Finals. Rockford spent much of the season at the top of the Central league standings until a spate of losses regulated them to 2nd behind the Chicago Wolves.

Like how you do the articles; been finding as I do longer articles and save them as .jpegs, it seems it won't keep the full size and compresses, making them almost unreadable. Until I can find a fix, think I'm going down your route.

                    Thanks!

I found the same thing myself when I was trying to design my own articles. So I found the best remedy was to construct the story within [QUOTE] brackets to give it an individual & separated look from the rest of the post.

And in some great personal news, Chris Ilitch has given me a contract extension!

Sure, I got various offers from other teams like Boston, Buffalo, Calgary, Dallas, Minnesota, even Tampa Bay asked me to come back, but Detroit is where the home and the heart is. 4 more years of Steve!

...Oh & the Red Wings offered the most money...

                              WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!!

                              I've got a question...

Who the hell is Ken Holland?

Going to make me sick to my stomach but : Yzerman was the soul of your franchise.

But, as we say in StL...Don't care if they went east, still hate them!

The Red Wings already have Viktor Chistov coming through the ranks beginning next season, so this guy isn’t really on our radar. He is going to be huge for some lucky team in the 2nd round though.
