Should be another good year for rookies, especially for American prospects. Even if we do / do not make playoffs this season, unfortunately I don’t think we will get a look in at any of these guys.
Currently teams such as New Jersey, Vegas, Tampa Bay, Montreal are serious contenders for the number 1 pick.

Game Results, News & Team Updates::

      1st January, Pittsburgh @ Detroit

The Red Wings finish the New Year’s double header (played Rangers on the 31st Dec) with a 2nd loss, going down to the Penguins 4-3 at Little Caesars Arena.
Fredrik Larsson scored twice during the 1st period & Jeff Skinner scored in the 2nd, however the door was always left ajar with the Penguins going goal for goal throughout the game. That was until going into the final period, with the scores tied at 3-3, Penguins Brian Rust scored with only 2:44 remaining to steal a big win.

      3 Stars of the Game:

      Larsson voted into All-Star game
Top Rookies – Detroit’s Larsson & Florida’s Matheson to play together for Team Atlantic

      5th January 2022,

      6th January, Winnipeg @ Detroit

The Red Wings slump to their 3rd straight loss going down to the Jets at home.
The home team matched it with the visitors with both teams scoring 3 apiece however it was again not enough.
Dach, Zadina & Frk all scored, however Husso was again average in net with 21 saves from 25 shots.
Patrick Laine was the thorn in the Wings side tonight scoring 2 goals.

      3 Stars of the Game:

      8th January, Calgary @ Detroit

The bleeding continues as the Red Wings concede 6 goals in a 6-2 loss at home to the Calgary Flames.
Bernier started tonight & he wishes he hadn’t, having an absolute stinker in net, making 16 saves, with 3 of Calgary’s goals coming in the 3rd period.
This season has seen the Wings put plenty of shots on net, however conversion is clearly the biggest hurdle. Tonight’s goals came from Shea Weber & Fredrik Larsson.

      3 Stars of the Game:

      10th January, Chicago @ Detroit

Fredrik Larsson scores his 1st career hat-trick to help the Red Wing’s snap their 4 game losing streak, with a 6-2 defeat of the Chicago Blackhawks at home.
The Wings finish this 4 game home stand with just the one win, which has placed them precariously on the brink of falling out of the top 8.
Larsson Was brilliant in his performance, with Blashill relocating him to the 1st line with Mantha & Dach, who were awarded the 2nd & 3rd Stars in a great line chemistry performance.
Husso had a better night, again the Wings defense limiting the opposition to 22 shots on net, with the Finnish goalie making 20 saves. Martin Frk took a blow to the face with an errant stick late in the game, it is believed he may have suffered a fractured jaw.

      3 Stars of the Game:

      13th January, Detroit @ Philadelphia

Fredrik Larsson has tallied a 2nd hat-trick in 2 games to again aid the Red Wings to a 3-0 victory over the Flyers.
Larsson was the lone goal scorer from both teams in a tightly fought contest.
Larsson scored twice in the 2nd period to put the visitors in front, then was able to find the empty net in the dying seconds of the final period to give him his 6th goal in 2 games.
Ville Husso was brilliant making 26 saves & earning his 4th shutout for the season.
Tonight’s win sees the Red Wings back into the top 8, pushing 1 point past the Flyers.

      3 Stars of the Game:

      Spoiler

      15th January, Florida @ Detroit

Detroit pick up a point, however they lose in overtime to the Panthers at home.
The Larsson / Matheson rivalry continues with both rookies scoring a goal each in tonight’s game. For Larsson, it was his 8th goal in 4 games.
The Red Wings had to scramble back from a 3-1 defect going into the 3rd period & they did so with goals from Larsson & Bertuzzi. However it was Aleksander Barkov who nailed the game winner in overtime that ensured the Panthers stay in 3rd place in the Atlantic & the Red Wings remain in a precarious Wild Card position.

      3 Stars of the Game:

      17th January, Nashville @ Detroit

A 3 goal 2nd period sets up the Red Wings for a 4-2 victory over the Nashville Predators at home.
Kevin Fiala scored the game’s 1st goal on his 1st shot on net, which was not an ideal start for the home team, who have played catch-up many times this season. However, Dylan Larkin found the back of the net early in the 2nd, followed by Chris Terry with his 1st for the season, & the Givani Smith scored his 1st career NHL goal. Pred’s Derek Ryan got one back late in the 2nd to make it close, however Michael Rasmussen lodged the puck over Pekka Rinne’s shoulder to light the lamp once more and put the result beyond doubt.

      3 Stars of the Game:

      20th January, Detroit @ Buffalo

Don’t adjust your TV sets, the Red Wings have punished the Sabres sloppy goaltending with an 8-3 victory over the league leaders at Keybank Arena.
The Sabres chose to start backup goalie, Ukko-Pekka Luukonen & paid the price as he proceeded to allow 6 goals through to 5 minutes into the final period before being pulled in favour of regular starting goalie Jusse Saros.
Saros didn’t exactly fare well either, allowing 2 goals in the 15 minutes he played.
Wings Captain Dylan Larkin inspired the Wings big win when during the 2nd period he threw the gloves down to battle Brendan Guhle. Larkin won the fight which had Wings players giving the young leader huge praise as he skated to the box.
Anthony Mantha & Michael Rasmussen top scored for the Red Wings with 2 goals each, with wingmen Fredrick Larsson & Evgeny Svechnikov both tallying 3 assists each for the game.
The Red Wings certainly wanted to make a statement tonight & they executed it perfectly.
Tonight’s victory sees them jump from 5th in Atlantic standings to 3rd in what is an extremely tight competition.
Tomorrow night the Wings play the Lightning, a team that has struggled all season, sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, yet somehow have managed to defeat the Red Wings on more than one occasion.

21st January, Detroit @ Tampa Bay

Detroit closes out the road double header with a 2nd victory, tonight the final score, 4-3 over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Red Wings top forward’s had a great night with Mantha, Larsson & Skinner all lighting the lamp, as well as journeyman forward, Chris Terry who scored his 3rd for the season.
The Wings held a 4-2 lead going into the final period & the Bolts were able to draw 1 closer thanks to a brilliant goal from Matthieu Joseph, however the visitors were able to tighten their defense and close the game out with the 4-3 victory.

      3 Stars of the Game:

      23rd January, Vegas @ Detroit

When everything seems to start looking up, this season has a repetitive tale of losses to low ranking teams for the Red Wings. Tonight the Wings going down 5-3 to the Vegas Golden Knights, handing the visitors only their 13th win for the season.
With score locked at 3-3 the Red Wings were just not good enough on the offensive zone in the final period, yet at the other end Erik Brannstrom netted the visitors 4th goal over Bernier to steal what should have been an unlikely win.
Earlier in the game, during the 1st period, the Wings held an early 2-0 lead, however poor judgement & defensive play allowed the Golden Knights in the door, with 2 late goals in the same period which ultimately set up the home side’s downfall.
If the Red Wings are to be playoffs bound for a 2nd consecutive year, they really need to pick up their game.

      3 Stars of the Game:

26th January, New Jersey @ Detroit

The Red Wings take a win into this year’s All Star weekend break with a healthy 4-1 victory over another struggling team, the New Jersey Devils.
Ville Husso was brilliant in net, making 31 saves after being rested during the Vegas loss.
Anthony Mantha scored twice in the 1st & 2nd periods to give the Wings a 2-0 lead. Devils forward, Marcus Johansson scored mid way through the second to bring the visitors within 1, however that is all they could manage as Rasmussen & Frk added 2 more to the Red Wings score to run out with the 4-1 victory.
Detroit now have the next 8 days to refresh & re-energise as the league heads into the All-Star Weekebnd being held this season in Philadelphia

      3 Stars of the Game:

      28th & 29th January - 2022 NHL All-Star Weekend in Philadelphia

      Red Wings Representative: Fredrik Larsson

      Wrap up:
It has been a month of epic highs & woeful lows as the team struggles to find consistency, however it is exceptionally tough in the Atlantic Division right now with 5 very good teams contending & stealing wins away from one another. Add to that the tight competition in the Metropolitan, which also has at least 5 top contenders, meaning that by the end of the regular season, at least 2 great teams will miss out on a playoffs berth.
We cannot go past this month’s wrap up without mentioning Fredrik Larson’s huge month in January.
From 11 games, the rookie scored 12 goals, 6 assists, 18 points which is nothing short of outstanding, especially when he hardly featured in the 1st 4 or 5 games of the month. His month included 2 hat-tricks in 2 consecutive games & a game with 3 assists, boosting the young forward to within 2 points of Florida’s George Matheson, who has the current overall rookie points lead. Larson’s 28 goal tally is also good enough to be the 3rd overall best in the league.
If the 19 year old can continue this run, then we might have a good chance at really solidifying a top 3 place in the Atlantic Division standings.
February is up next which signifies the start of the mad NHL Trade Deadline period. In all honesty, I am not sure we really need to change much, however you don’t win Cups by sitting on your hands, so if a good deal passes our way we might just take it.

      Injuries:
10th January, RW Martin Frk - Fractured Jaw - Missed 6 games

Well folks I am finally all caught up just in time for Christmas. I am taking the family overseas for a nice break from the 20th to the 28th, so there won't be any updates for a little while, though no doubt I'll be here checking out my favorite sub-forum in Operation Sports.

A big thanks to everyone for reading & your praises throughout. Any encouragement, or even just a simple “like” really means a lot & no doubt it means the same to the other guys who have put a lot of hard work into posting their dynasties here at Operation Sports, it really goes a long way to driving us to keep playing & posting.

So, from yours truly, have yourselves & families, a safe & Merry Christmas. May 2019 bring good fortune to you all.

        Cheers.

Just read this whole thread. Great franchise. Built exactly how Detroit would do it. Good drafting and smart FA.

Ive been thinking of getting this game as I haven't had a hockey game in forever but have seen very mixed views. Do you mind giving your opinion on how a hockey fan but not a die hard fan would enjoy it? I like the position the Bruins are in and would like to start a franchise with them.

Thanks for the kind words lazershow & it’s reassuring to hear that the team is potentially heading in the right direction like I hope they might be.

I only play franchise mode & not any online modes, so i can only vouch this portion of the game, but to me, playing EA’s NHL 19 is very enjoyable to play & I think anyone who is looking at coming back to the series or someone who is new, should find playing the game enjoyable also.
More than happy to give some advice & I’ll break my answer down into 2 parts:

              1. Actual on-ice gameplay:
Not sure how conversant you are with the skill stick control, it can be tricky to learn, so even playing at pro-level, expect it to take a while to get used to. But once you do have the controls down (& if you have a basic understanding of how to position yourself on the ice), you’ll find the ability to score, check, defend & stay out of the penalty box, gradually gets better with each game you play. I’d recommend playing 3-4 exhibition games at least before starting a franchise so you have the basics down.

              2. Franchise Mode:
I’d also recommend having a “practice run” with a franchise where you just purely take a bit of time (maybe a day or 2, using the the same team) to get used moving around & in-between screens, making a trade or 2, signing guys to contracts & so on.
Then once you have an idea of what is going on, start up your proper franchise.
There will be a few screens that will possibly keep you confused for a little while, however in time they will start making sense.
The New Scouting system, whilst great & a huge improvement over previous years attempts, will possibly be best left on Automatic mode until you are ready try it on manual.
Whilst your scouts are set to automatic, meaning they assign themselves to scouting tasks, you still have the ability to manually assign them to any players/prospects you are interested in.

Boston have a great Roster which includes Marchand, Chara, Pastrnak, a great goalie in Tukka Rask. I think I would actually enjoy playing a franchise as them also & the potential is there for some early Cups.

Anyway hope that helps, if you need any help or tips feel free to pm or ask on here.

Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings

That was extreme helpful thank you. I only do online be a pro mode in sports games. I'm a hockey fan but as mentioned not a die hard which i think will help me not notice if its not 100% like real life. I get lost in slider hell in 2k.

The bruins are in a wierd spot. A lot of potential with guys in their prime or almost thru it. Rask is frustrating but he definitely has the skills to be great...just not the desire. They need serious scoring help on the 2nd and 3rd lines but they have a lot of potential guys. Sweeney just needs to decide who's expendable and trade for forward.

Again thanks for the advice it's impossible to find this game on redbox so i won't be able to rent it to try it out. You made me more confident in purchasing it

                  4th February, Detroit @ Ottawa

The Red Wings are outplayed convincingly tonight against division rival, Ottawa, with a 5-0 loss on the road.
Silfverberg & Stone each scored twice & former Wing Tomas Tatar scored the other in a dominant display.
Detroit’s forward’s could do nothing against the Sen’s defense & superior goal tending of Braden Holtby, who earns a fantastic shutout tonight.
Ville Husso was average after the All-Star break, making 24 saves for .828 save pct.
The Red Wings will need to regroup as they head home to play the Blue Jackets at Little Caesars Arena.

                  3 Stars of the Game:

                  5th February, Columbus @ Detroit

The Red Wings steal a point however come up short with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Anthony Mantha scored the game tying goal with only 3 seconds left in the 3rd period to breathe some extra life into the game, which could have seen the Wings steal an unbelievable win, however it was not to be when Jackets d-man Seth Jones nailed the game winner off a laser wrist shot from above the left hand faceoff circle beating Jonathan Bernier above the shoulder.
For Columbus their brilliant season continues, for the Red Wings, they dance ever so close on falling out of the top 8 in the East.

                  3 Stars of the Game:

                  7th February, Edmonton @ Detroit

The Red Wings dominate at home, defeating the Edmonton Oilers 4-1. After a quiet 1st period, the Red Wings seized control in the 2nd & 3rd with 4 straight goals, including 2 from Fredrik Larsson to take his season tally to 30.
Edmonton Center, Pasi Vallin scored with 27 seconds remaining in the 3rd to deny Ville Husso a shutout, however it was a job well done by the Red Wings defense tonight.

                  9th February, Boston @ Detroit

Detroit dominate Boston 6-1 tonight at Little Caesars Arena, led by Rookie sensation, Fredrik Larsson scoring his third career hat-trick.
The Bruins scored the game’s 1st goal nearly midway through the 2nd period, however after a tongue-lashing from head-coach Jeff Blashill, the Red Wings found a gear, piling on 4 goals past Darcy Kuemper in the same period, then 2 more in the 3rd period.
Again, Larsson was brilliant with a hat-trick, his 3rd for the season, plus other tallies coming from Mantha, Athanasiou & Muzzin.
Kirby Dach had a field day, involved in all 3 of Larsson’s goals, earning 3 assists.
A reasonable quiet game for Husso who made 21 saves in tonight’s win.
This win places the Red Wings within 1 point of the 2nd placed Bruins in the Atlantic Division.
The Red Wings now head on a 12 day 6 game away stand, firstly taking on 4th placed Toronto who also sit within 1 point of the Wings in the Atlantic in 4th.

                  3 Stars of the Game:

                  12th February, Detroit @ Toronto

The Red Wings have won an all-important 3-2 shootout victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on the road.
Tyler Bertuzzi & Givani Smith scored. Smith in his 1st game on return from a healthy scratching over the last 4 games, helped his case to stay in the side after his game-tying goal in the 3rd.
Jeff Skinner slotted the shootout session’s only goal to give the Red Wings the Win.
With the Maple Leafs still acquiring a point from tonight’s loss, they move to 2 points behind the Red Wings on the ladder, who at least temporarily, sit in 2nd place in the Atlantic.

                  Trade Deadline News:

Red Wings acquire Koekkoek from Devils for McIsaac
Wings trade away youth for experience to bolster team’s struggling defense

                  Trade Details:

                  The Trade: Detroit acquired D Slater Koekoek (28yrs, 81 Exact Top4D) & a 2023 2nd Rnd NJD Draft Pick from New Jersey for D Jared McIsaac (22yrs 79ovr Med Top4D), a 2023 DET 3rd Rnd Pick & a 2023 DET 7th Rnd Pick

                  Wrap up:
It was another tough month. After heading in a great direction mid-month, 2 bad losses at home killed momentum giving the Wings 6 wins from 13 games. Somehow, thanks to other results, the Red Wings sit tied 2nd in the Atlantic Division with Toronto & ahead 3 points in front of Florida & Boston.
Looking at the stats, our 1st line allows too many goals scored during their shifts. Currently as it stands Mantha has a plus/minus of -7, Larsson is even at 0 & Dach is +7. Is it their defensive effort? I am not sure, however this trend can not continue with it seemingly hurting the team’s record.
Moving into next month, head-coach Jeff Blashill has decided to move Mantha to the 2nd line & bring Jeff Skinner up to the 1st to accompany Larsson & Dach. Skinner seems to be able to move the puck better than Mantha, plus his defensive effort is great also. It gives me hope that this will create a better 1st & 2nd line chemistry. (Also Mantha & Dach are both Power Forwards which to me, probably does not promote the best chemistry. Ideally we need a 2-way forward or a playmaker on the line).

                  Trade Deadline:
During trade deadline, we nearly did not make a trade at all, however McIsaac had been demanding more ice time & making plenty of noise when he wasn’t, resulting in poor relations with coaching & management. Unfortunately we had to move him to bring balance back to the locker room. We looked high & low & after some wheeling & dealing, we come to an agreement to acquire Slater Koekkoek from the New Jersey Devils, In the trade we gave up a 3rd & 7th round pick in the 2023 draft, however we acquired a 2nd round pick in the 2023 draft which should come in handy.
The addition of Koekkoek to the line up brings about more experience to our defensive core, which at this stage is extremely important. Koekkoek will slip straight into the 3rd pairing with Callan Foote, with Cholowski likely becoming a healthy scratch for now.

                  Injuries:
                  17th February - D Callan Foote - Hip Injury - Missed 4 games
                  19th February - D Jacob Trouba - Groin Injury - Missed 3 games
28th February - RW Martin Frk - Abdominal Strain - Out for 1 week

                  Contract Extensions:
                  2nd February -
RW Chris Terry - Signed 2 year contract extension - $0.775M per year
LW Matt Puempel - Signed 2 year contract extension - $0.925M per year

                  Call Ups/ Assignments:
19th February - D Amrit Shaw Called up from Grand Rapids, & reassigned 21st February.
Shaw played his 1st career NHL game with both Trouba & Foote out of the line. Both returned the game after meaning Shaw had to go back. Looking forward to Shaw, Legace & Spezza pushing hard for team selection next season.

Projected Lines - 2nd March 2022, San Jose Sharks @ Detroit Red Wings

Tough month but they kept their heads above water and at least got points in the shootout losses. It seems you need to find some grit in a forward, especially that top line

Yeh I think you might be right about that. Might be something I need to work towards for next season as the Trade Deadline has come and gone. I’ll see how Skinner works out with Dach & Larsson, hopefully he provides some end-to-end spark.

It appeared the Red Wings might go scoreless, until with 30 seconds remaining & with Husso pulled, Tyler Bertuzzi scored from an acute right angle to give the Wings a slight chance.
New recruit, Defenseman Slater Koekkoek earned his 1st point with his new team, gathering an assist in Bertuzzi’s late goal.
Husso put in another solid effort, making 35 saves.
Tonight was a great game for fans of both sides to see & the tight finish is certainly a clear sign of the talent going around in the Atlantic Division currently.

                          16th March, Minnesota @ Detroit

Sitting in 2nd in the Atlantic & with 2 losses on the trot, the Red Wings hold a precarious 1 point lead over Toronto in 3rd & a 2 point lead over the Bruin’s in 4th.

                          18th March, Carolina @ Detroit

Detroit snaps the losing streak with 7-4 victory tonight over the Carolina Hurricanes at home.
It was a busy night for goal tenders & the red lamps.
Carolina held their own for the best part of 2 periods, however were eventually overcome by the Red Wings fire power.
Detroit’s Jeff Skinner led the way, scoring twice, plus assisting in 2 other goals, with other regulars such as Fredrik Larsson finishing with a goal plus an assist, Anthony Mantha finishing with a goal, plus 2 assists. Larkin, Bertuzzi & Frk also scored in the win.
Kirby Dach was also instrumental with 3 assists.

                          19th March, Detroit @ Boston

In an epic original 6 battle, the Boston Bruins have defeated the Red Wings 2-1 after the shootout.
From tonight’s game, the Red Wings remain in front of the Bruins by 1 point - which could be a very handy point come the final game of the regular season.
Ryan Donato scored for the Bruins in the 2nd period & it appeared the home side might shutout the visitors until Kirby Dach netted a late back handed with 3:24 remaining in the 3rd period.
Overtime saw no goals but plenty of action, forcing the shootout session by which Brad Marchand scored to win the game for the Bruins.

                          * I don’t think I have won a shootout in NHL 19 yet lol. Time to git gud aaargh!

The Red Wings claw back from a 2-3 deficit to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3 on the road, thanks to a 3 goal haul in the 3rd period.
Detroit’s goals came from some of the lesser prominent scorers with D-men Muzzin, Foote & Cholowski all finding the net, as well as 3rd liner’s, Frk & Svechnikov.
For Dennis Cholowski, it is his 1st goal for the season.
The sour note from tonight’s game was what appeared to be a neck injury to Defenseman Jake Muzzin.

                          23rd March, Detroit @ Montreal

The Red Wings have capitalised in this road double header, winning the 2nd game tonight 5-2 over the Montreal Canadiens.
The Canadiens got off to the right start, with a goal from a former Red Wings prospect, Anthony Gilroy, however Detroit was able to then pile on 4 goals unanswered to produce the victory.
Dylan Larkin & Shea Weber both scored twice & Mantha nailed 1 in the dominant display. All 3 players finished the game with 3 points.

                          26th March, Washington @ Detroit

The Red Wings survive a late scare to win tonight’s matchup against the Washington Capitals 4-3.
Holding a 2 goal lead late in the 3rd period, Andre Burakovsky scored with 3.8 seconds remaining to bring the Caps within 1. The Red Wings were able to hold out the dying seconds to take the win.
With final places in the Atlantic so very close, tonight’s win was extremely important for the Wings.
Fredrik Larsson finished the night out with a goal, plus an assist, however the star of the show was Tyler Bertuzzi, who led the way with 2 goals.
Caps Captain, Alex Ovechkin displayed his ageless talent with the 36 year old, scoring his 59th goal of the season to further extend his untouchable lead in the league goal scoring.
Ville Husso put in an admirable performance, tonight making 23 saves, whilst Caps Goalie, Robin Lehrer made 28 saves. Lehner is in the midst of a career best season & is a leading contender for this year’s Vezina Trophy.
Tonight’s win gives the Red Wings a 5 point buffer over the 3rd placed Boston Bruins.
*A scrappy win, but finally broke my lose streak.

Detroit serves up a 5-2 defeat to old nemesis, Tampa Bay in tonight’s game at Little Caesars Arena.
Fredrik Larsson scored on an empty net with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to tally his 4th hat-trick this season, taking the rookie’s total to 47.
Zadina & Athanasiou were the Wings other 2 goal scorers, whilst for the Bolts, Steven Stamkos scored a goal, alongside Ondrej Palat.

                          30th Detroit @ Carolina

The Red Wings can’t get it done against the Hurricanes tonight, going down to the home side 4-3.
The Canes blew the lead out to 4-1 in the 2nd period, however the Wings staged a comeback with goals coming from Kirby Dach & Fredrik Larsson, but it the gap was too great.
Although tonight’s loss was not ideal the Wings still hold a 7 point grip on 2nd place in the Atlantic over Boston

                          3 Stars of the Game:

                          Wrap up:
A super month with 10 wins from 15 games, which has created a 7 point buffer over Boston, who sit behind us in 3rd.
The move to bring Skinner up to the 1st line & Mantha back to the 2nd line appears to have paid off in spades, with Mantha improving from a plus/minus of -7 to 0, whilst Larsson improved from 0 to +16.
Larsson was at his best once again scoring 12 goals, plus tallying 8 assists for 20 points. His season total sits at 48, only 2 away from a magical 50 goals, which has not been achieved by a rookie since Alex Ovechkin in 05/06.
With 5 games to go, the Red Wings have not quite secured their berth into the playoffs just yet, however they are in a much better position today than they were at the beginning of the March.
To complete the regular season, the Red Wings last 5 opponents are:
                          2nd April @ Boston Bruins (3rd Atlantic)
                          3rd April @ Pittsburgh Penguins (3rd Metropolitan)
5th April VS NY Islanders (6th Metropolitan)
7th April VS Buffalo Sabres (1st Atlantic)
9th April @ Toronto Maple Leafs (5th Atlantic)

With 3 of the 5 games facing other Atlantic Division teams still trying to make the playoffs cut, this should be a an interesting run to the finish.

Detroit drops its 2nd game in a row, tonight losing an important clash against 3rd place Boston Bruins.
From tonight’s loss, the Bruins reduce the gap to the 2nd placed Red Wings to 5 points.
The Bruins had the upper hand for most of the game & in the final period, the home side blew the lead out to 2 goals & the Red Wings could not respond.
Skinner & Veleno scored the Wings goals & Husso made 27 saves.
Bruins Goalie, Darcy Kuemper has been brilliant in the last 2 games against the Red Wings, tonight making 30 saves in the victory.

                              4th April, Detroit @ Pittsburgh

The Red Wings drop their 3rd game in a row, going down 4-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on the road.
In what is a tough draw to the finish, the Red Wings need to find something extra to push through to the end of the regular season.
Tonight the Wings held a 2-1 lead moving into the final period, however they capitulated, allowing Penguin’s Evgeny Malkin, Sidney Crosby & Brian Dumoulin to score, handing the Wings another critical loss.
Husso was busy in tonight’s loss facing 44 shots, making 41 saves.
To add a little salt to tonight’s wounds, veteran Defenseman, Shea Weber was mildly concussed after a hard clash with Pens forward Phil Kessel. Weber left during the key stages in the final minutes of the 2nd period & did not return.
With 3 games to go, the Red Wings hold onto 2nd place by 4 points over Florida who have jumped over the Bruins in 3rd place.

                              3 Stars of the Game:

5th April, NY Islanders @ Detroit

The Red Wings are shutout 4-0 at home to the New York Islanders, handing them their 4th loss in a row.
In a game that should have seen the Red Wings perform a little better than they had against some of their tougher opponents, the home side was out to sea, as the Islanders easily accounted for any offensive pressure applied.
Islanders goalie, Linus Soderstrom made 26 saves on his way to a well-deserved shutout, whilst at the other end, Johnathan Bernier was swapped out for Ville Husso after allowing 3 goals late in the 2nd period. Ville Husso faced a flurry of shots in the final period, allowing 1 goal from 20 shots faced.
Fredrik Larsson has failed to score in any of the past 3 games, he currently sits on 48 goals for the season – 2 short of the lucrative 50 mark.
For the Red Wings, one must begin to worry that they have lost momentum at a critical time with 4 consecutive losses & now only 2 games remaining against even tougher opponents in 1st placed Buffalo & Toronto, who are much better than their ladder position suggests.
Despite the series of losses, after tonight’s game & thanks to other results around the league, the Red Wings have officially locked themselves into the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

                              7th April, Buffalo @ Detroit

The Detroit Red Wings have finally halted the skid & have defeated top Atlantic seed, Buffalo Sabres, 4-1 at the last home game of the regular season.
All eyes were on Fredrik Larsson tonight, tallying 50 goals in his rookie season. However it almost appeared that he might not get there.
Larsson scored his 1st goal during the 2nd period to move his tally to 49 & it did not look like the rookie was going to get his 50th, until with only 5.4 seconds remaining in regulation, the young Swede skater intercepted the puck, sped to the blue line & shot on the empty net, scoring with only 0.7 of a second remaining.
Tonight’s victory, locks the Red Wings into 2nd place in the Atlantic with 1 game to spare.
Andreas Athanasiou received a Mild Concussion, ruling him out for the last game of the regular season against Toronto.

Larsson scores 50th goal in 4-1 win over Sabres
Red Wings forward achieves rare accolade of scoring 50+ goals in rookie season

                              7th April 2022

With approximately 5 seconds remaining in tonight’s game at Detroit’s Little Caesar’s Arena against the Buffalo Sabres, Red Wings rookie, Fredrik Larsson intercepted the puck off a loose pass, enabling him to score his 50th goal (on an empty net) of the season. The puck entered the net with only 0.7 of a second to spare.
Sitting on 49 goals for the season, having scored once during the 2nd period, it appeared certain Larsson would either have to wait until Saturday’s final game of the regular season in Toronto to attempt to score goal number 50, or possibly miss out altogether. That is, until the puck found its way to his stick off a bad pass with very few precious seconds remaining. With the desperate screams & cheers from the home crowd, the young forward did not waste his time in making his way close enough to the Wing’s offensive end, snapping the puck in the direction of the empty net to score number #50.
It was a huge moment for Larsson, his teammates & the crowd alike, as a rare piece of Hockey history was made in the final home game of the regular season.
Not since Alex Ovechkin’s 52 goals in the 2005/06 season, has a rookie scored 50 goals or more in an 82 game regular season. It is an elite club that bears very few names to its membership, which also includes Teemu Selanne (76) in 92/93, the Great One, Wayne Gretzky (51) in 79/80 & Mike Bossy (53) in 77/78.
After the game, the number #1 pick in the 2021 draft, was asked about how he felt about achieving the milestone:
“Obviously it was amazing feeling. Maybe it would be better if I scored the 50th with a goalie in the net, but to score it here in front of the home crowd & with only maybe a second to spare before the game ended, it was amazing.”
“It is out of the way now, I can put my mind forward to helping my team win the Stanley Cup.” Said Larsson in the locker room.
After the game, Red Wings Head-Coach Jeff Blashill commented, “Freddy is a unique kid, we made the right choice in selecting him at number 1 in the draft, he handles himself with a profound amount of maturity & professionalism for someone who is only 19 years old. That doesn’t mean we have not had to give him guidance. In fact my coaching staff, including myself, as well as Stevie Y at the top, have put a huge amount of time into Freddy’s development. He listens, then he executes. That why he has been so successful in his 1st year of professional hockey.”
“I’m happy he got the milestone, but it’s only a number, we got to get back to work. Looking past the last game in Toronto on Saturday, I believe we will be facing Florida in round 1 of the playoffs & they have talent aplenty there. They will not be a pushover by any means.”
With tonight’s victory, the Red Wings locked themselves into 2nd position in the Atlantic, plus finally halted their 4 game slide. Additionally from other results from around the league overnight, the Florida Panthers have held out the Boston Bruins in the standings, locking themselves into 3rd place in the Atlantic Division behind the Red Wings.
“I guess you can say we got lucky with how the standings finished. You normally don’t lose 4 games in a row at this point of the season and maintain the position you are in. We got to be thankful for that.” Said Blashill.
The Florida Panthers were the benefactors of the other generational talent on offer in 19 year old, Right Wing American skater, George Matheson, who was selected at number #2 in the 2021 draft behind Larsson.
Matheson led rookie point scoring for the best part of this 2021/22 season, before Larsson hit his straps, overtaking him. Matheson has also accumulated an impressive 40 goals for the season which will make the impending 1st round matchup of the Panthers & the Red Wings a promoter’s wet dream. The 2 best rookies in the league, going head-to-head.
NHL.com managed to pull Red Wings General Manager, Steve Yzerman, aside at the end of tonights game & he commented, “We’re looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead, the last few losses have been tough to watch, but the other results went our way so we will finish 2nd in the division. It gives us home ice advantage in the 1st round.”
“However we will not be going overboard & think too far into the future. We finished 2nd last season as well & were eliminated in the 1st round by Tampa, so to look further ahead is foolish I believe. The competition in the NHL is intense & any team can win on its day.”
The Red Wings have one more game to play in their regular season against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena before the post-season commences.
On the Maple Leafs, Jeff Blashill commented, “The Leafs have exceptional talent there & will be extremely unhappy about not making the playoffs this season, I expect that they will come at us firing. We just have to do what we have done all season. That is to play 3 periods of consistent hockey and move on from there. We will not rest anybody, but it is likely Double A (Athanasiou) will miss a few games after his bump tonight. He was shaken up, we will monitor him over the next few days.”
Andreas Athanasiou, left the game part-way through the 2nd period after receiving a check into the boards from Buffalo Centerman, Casey Mittelstadt. Looking dazed, Athanasiou went straight to the locker room & did not return to the game.

Saturday Night’s game in Toronto will be broadcast live on NBCSN from 7:00 pm.
                              ‪9th April, Detroit @ Toronto

The Detroit Red Wings have closed out the regular season with a commanding 6-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Leafs played a game they’d rather forget which possibly sums up their year in general. After leading the division last season, the Leafs finish out season 2021/22 in 5th, well out of a playoffs position.
Detroit’s defensemen played a pivotal role tonight, not only limiting the Leafs to 18 shots on net, but also 4 of Detroit’s goals came from Defensemen, including 2 goals from Jake Muzzin.
The Red Wings well & truly had the game sealed by the end of the 2nd period, leading 4-0. They had the score blown out to 6-0, however the Leafs were able rake in 2 late “junk time” goals when the Red Wings let the foot off the gas pedal.
Fredrik Larsson was unable to add to his season haul of 50 goal. Larsson, who did not take one shot on goal tonight, was perhaps the one player the Leafs were successful in shutting down.

                              3 Stars of the Game:

                              Wrap up:
Although the Red Wings experienced that 4 game slide prior to winning the last 2, the team is looking in pretty good shape with the playoffs set to start in just a few days against the Florida Panthers.
Aside from Andreas Athanasiou, we have a healthy line up. I don’t expect that I will be making any changes to the Top 6 forwards or our defensive pairings going in. On top of that, Husso is definitely our man to mind the net – there have no doubt been some games where I thought he might have been asleep, but overall he had a great year & we will back him in.
Our opponents in round 1, Florida, have had a good but turbulent year, at one stage in the season, sitting above us, to later being out of contention, right back to breathing down our necks again & beating Boston in the race for the final spot in the playoffs.
I have to admit, part way into this season, I was looking at George Matheson’s (Florida’s #2 pick in 2021) stats with envy, thinking I might have picked the wrong guy, but then Larsson really picked up a notch & proved his worth. (In recent years of simming EA NHL games I don’t think I have ever seen two rookies score so many goals combined in one season – combined they scored 90!)
They will be a tough opponent & we are up to the challenge.
