Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings
Yeh given what Perron's age is in the year 2022 (like 33 or 34?), Minnesota gave up a lot, I would tend to agree.
Although I have noticed the game does value low-end 1st round draft picks (from high placing teams) quite cheap, perhaps a fraction too cheap.Comment

The Grand Rapids Griffins finish the regular season on a winning note, defeating the Iowa Wild 3-0 on the road.
With Iowa struggling all season and playing their backup goalie, the Griffins won quite convincingly in this contest.
Marcus Hogberg was brilliant in net making 27 saves & earning his 4th shutout for the season.
Tanner Fritz, Kalle Kossila & Cole Stewart were Griffins goal scorers tonight.
The Griffins have finished in 2nd place in the Central Division Standings behind the Texas Stars, who are red hot going into the playoffs having won their past 11 games straight.

Wrap up:
After going 25-5-3 in the 1st 33 games from the 1st update report back in January, the Griffin’s next 43 games through to the completion of the season were much tougher, going 21-18-4 in that period.
The team had a number of players featuring at different periods throughout the season, however the main stay performers were forwards C Emanuel Comrie, LW Matt Puempel, C Tanner Fritz & C Axel Holmstrom, plus defensemen Amrit Shaw, Brandon Mestre & veteran Johnathan Ericsson.
Up & coming goalie, Viktor Chistov ran hot & cold this season, at one point winning 10 games in a row, however almost completely undoing that feat later by losing nearly the same amount before snapping the streak.
Looking forward the Griffins will take on the Chicago Wolves in Round 1 of the AHL Playoffs. The previous time the Griffins played the Wolves in the finals, they were beaten decisively & this challenge is not going to be any easier.
Injuries:
16th April - LW Kalle Kossila - Mild Concussion - Out for 1 week
The Calder Cup Playoffs Picture – Round 1:
Last years Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters failed to qualify for this years playoffs.
The Griffins will take on 3rd placed Chicago Wolves in the 1st round, best-of-5 series. Chicago are a team with a well of experience & have placed well over the previous seasons. This will be no easy task for the Griffins.

Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings
Who will win the 2022 Stanley Cup Championship?
The Columbus Blue Jackets emerged almost from nowhere to overtake the Washington Capitals by season’s end to win the Presidents Trophy.
Last Season’s Stanley Cup Champions, the Winnipeg Jets just scraped through to the Finals (8th place / 2nd Wild Card), they play the top team in the Western Conference, the Vancouver Canucks.
But we all know which matchup we’re here to see:

NHL News:
The Red Wings seize their opportunities in game 1 & have come away with a blitzing 8-2 victory over the wounded Florida Panthers.
No one would have thought that such a blow out was on the cards, especially when the Panthers got away to what looked to be a perfect start, when Jonathan Huberdeau tapped in a puck that rebounded off the boards, putting the visiting side up by 1 early on.
However, it would nearly be the only celebration the Panthers and their fans would have, as it all went wrong from there, with the Wings then piling on 4 goals unanswered through to the end of the 1st period.
Florida started the 2nd period off well again, by scoring the 1st goal, however that too was answered by 2 more goals from the Red Wings, leaving the score 6-2 at the last break.
Things went from bad to worse in the 3rd period when star rookie winger, George Matheson, had to be helped off the ice after a Colton Parayko check into the boards, during the early stages of the 3rd period. Parayko’s check was clean however Matheson’s head made contact with the boards, injuring the young winger. Matheson did not return to the game. Detroit went on to score twice more, the final score an ugly 8-2 in Detroit’s favour.
The Red Wings found their goals from Mantha, Larsson & Weber each scoring twice, as well as single goals from Givani Smith & Callan Foote.
For the Panthers they will have to regroup, figure out where their game went wrong & implement changes for game 2. With Reimer out with a hand injury, the last thing the Panthers want now is another star player sidelined.
With such a victory in game 1 & Florida licking their wounds, the Red Wings have certainly gained an upper hand in this series.
We’ll be back here for game 2 on the 4th April.

Breaking News….
The Red Wings take a 2 game series lead with tonight’s 4-1 victory over the Panthers at home.
Detroit managed to do their damage during the 1st 2 periods, with Dach scoring in the 1st period, followed by goals from Rasmussen, Frk & Larsson during the 2nd.
Ville Husso almost had a shutout going, until with 2:39 remaining, Aleksander Barkov finally broke through to give the Panthers something to be positive about.
The Series now heads to Florida for games 3 & 4 with Detroit leading 2-0.
3 Stars of the Game:
16th April, Game 3 - Detroit @ Florida
Game 3 in Florida and the Panthers hand the Red Wings a 6-1 lesson in hockey & prove they are no pushover.
Panthers Goaltender Samuel Montembeault put the previous losses behind him and played a brilliant game, perhaps his career best, making 31 saves.
Ville Husso did not fare so well at the other end, letting in the 1st two shots on goal, which clearly rattled him, later allowing 4 more goals in a poor effort.
Defenseman Colton Parayko was the Wings lone goal scorer with the forward lines not putting enough pressure on up forward.
The Red Wings currently lead the series 2-1.
3 Stars of the Game:
18th April, Game 4 - Detroit @ Florida
Detroit has won 2-1 in a close game 4 in Florida.
Tonight’s victory sees the Wings take a commanding 3-1 series lead, pushing the Panthers to the verge of elimination.
The Red Wings 2 goals came in the 1st period with Mantha & Svechnikov scoring to take a 2-0 lead into the 2nd period.
Panthers forward Mike Hoffman scored midway through the 2nd period to bring the home side within 1 goal, however they could not bridge the gap with Ville Husso playing a much more solid brand of goal tending compared to his efforts in game 3.
Husso finished the night with 33 saves, earning the 1st star of the game.
The Series now heads back to Detroit where the Red Wings could finish this series in 5 games.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game 5 - Florida @ Detroit
Red Wings Star defenseman, Colton Parayko scores with 1:49 remaining in the 3rd period to break the 2-2 deadlock with the Panthers. Setting in motion another 2 Detroit goals from Muzzin & Larkin (EN) in the last minute, resulting in a 5-2 Red Wings victory & an end to the series in 5 games.
Detroit certainly did not have it easy tonight, although they did draw 1st blood when Fredrik Larsson scored from range in the 1st period.
The Panthers struck back in the 2nd period with goals from Defenseman Michael (not George) Matheson & Aleksi Heponiemi to take the lead for albeit a brief time until with 3:01 remaining in the same period, Shea Weber broke through to score & tie the game.
The final period was hotly contested & neither side could capitalise in any opportunity until finally Parayko’s goal, with 1:49 remaining, from a faceoff draw broke the stalemate.
Muzzin then went on to score a freak goal with 1:09 remaining, then Dylan Larkin scored another 30 seconds later when he stole the puck from Panther’s Captain, Keith Yandle & shot on the empty net.
With the series now over the Red Wings will have some time to rest & recover for round 2.
For the Panthers, it was a good season, however some bad luck with injuries to Goalie James Reimer in the last game of the regular season & Right Winger George Matheson in game 1 of this series, proved to be the side’s downfall.

Series Wrap Up:
A reasonably straight forward series for the Red Wings in round 1. The team had a big advantage going in with Panthers Starting Goalie, James Reimer, missing via a hand injury in the last game of the regular season. Then couple that with our own Colton Parayko nailing George Matheson in game 1 to take out the Panthers number 1 scorer (Which wasn’t intended, I was looking forward to seeing a the Larsson / Matheson rivalry in this series – Thanks a lot Colton!).
Shea Weber led by example which was great to see, the aging superstar defenseman still has something left in the tank & I hope he can further inspire the Red Wings to run as deep as possible through the playoffs.
I was also impressed to see that Fredrik Larsson was heavily involved in at least 3 of the 5 games. Last season when we were wiped by Tampa in 5 games, there was not anyone in the top 6 forward line to step up. For us to be successful this season, the team really needs him & others to contribute consistently. A lot of weight on such a young man’s shoulders however this is where the real test is.
Currently we have been lucky with all players being healthy & available to play. Moving into next round we will need all hands on deck when we play the Pittsburgh Penguins, who last year, were the runners-up in the Stanley Cup Final (Lost to Winnipeg Jets).
Again we have the home ice advantage thanks to our higher ladder position, however, although the Penguins finished as the 1st Wild Card team, they actually finished with a better season record than us & their list of talent is phenomenal with guys like Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Kessel, Letang, Sprong, & not forgetting elite goalie Matt Murray.
Our confidence is high & we believe we can do it.

Projected Lines for Game 1– Detroit vs Pittsburgh:
The Detroit Red Wings will have their hands full in the next round as they take on the power & might of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Last season the Penguins went all the way to the Stanley Cup Final, only to go down to the Winnipeg Jets. They will be trying hard as ever to get back to the final showdown with stars such as Crosby, Malkin & Kessel not getting any younger.
Spoiler
The Season has come to an abrupt end for the Griffin’s once again, eliminated in round 1 via the Chicago Wolves, the series completed 3-1. Could a poor 2nd half of the season & poor playoffs record, hinder Viktor Chistov’s (up & coming goalie) advance into the NHL? We’ll see.
The other big upset in the 1st round was the exit of the Texas Stars, losing to the Manitoba Moose in 3 straight games. Texas finished the regular season in 1st place in the Central Division & had the 2nd best record in the league behind Hartford Wolfpack.

Game Results, News & Team Updates::
Spoiler
Game 1 - 26th April, Pittsburgh @ Detroit
The Detroit Red Wings have dealt the 1st blow with a 5-3 game 1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Fredrik Larsson has lifted the bar once again, scoring 4 goals in tonight’s victory.
Where ever Larsson was, the puck just seemed to sit in the right place for the young star, scoring his hat-trick during the 2nd period, then following up with his 4th in the final period.
Dylan Larkin was the Wings other goal scorer, also finishing the night with 2 assists for a 3 point night.
For the Penguins, penalties were their greatest enemy tonight, putting on 7 penalties for 14 minutes, to the Red Wings 1 penalty for 2 minutes.
Game 2 will be back here at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Thursday night.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game Pics – See Inside Spoiler
Game 2 - 28th April, Pittsburgh @ Detroit
The Pittsburgh Penguins manage to split the series in Detroit, with a dominant 4-0 shutout of the Red Wings in game 2.
For all of Larsson’s pomp in game 1, the Penguins had him completely figured out in tonight’s game limiting the forwards ability to get a clean possession of the puck.
The Penguins found goals from Duclair, Weal, Miletec & Ennis & looked firmly in control for the best part of the game.
Despite a good game 1, Ville Husso was no match for the Pens offense. The Finnish goal tender making 25 saves from 29 shots on net.
Penguins goal tender Matt Murray was perfect, saving all 26 Red Wings shots on goal.
The series now heads to Pittsburgh for games 3 & 4, the Penguins have at least achieved breaking the Wings at home for one of the two games.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game 3 - 30th April, Detroit @ Pittsburgh
The Detroit Red Wings have returned serve & broken Pittsburgh at home in Game 3 with a 3-1 victory.
After a scoreless 1st period, Penguins forward, Daniel Sprong netted one early in the 2nd to put the home team in front.
The Red Wings then earned a great goal from an unlikely source, 4th line forward Givani Smith, who blasted the puck from near the blue line to tie the game.
With the scores tied at 1-1 moving into the final period, Anthony Mantha scored with 11:42 remaining, putting the visitors in front for the 1st time.
The Wings kept Pittsburgh from scoring, then Jeff Skinner was able to slot the puck in the empty net with 24 seconds remaining to put the result beyond doubt.
Husso kept the brakes on the Penguins attack, stopping 35 shots tonight in a much better display.
Penguins goal tender, Matt Murray still had a very respectable game, making 25 saves.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game 4 - 2nd May, Detroit @ Pittsburgh
The Detroit Red Wings have defeated Pittsburgh 4-2 in game 4, pushing last year’s Stanley Cup Runners-up to the brink of elimination.
Dylan Larkin scored early, followed by 2 goals from Jeff Skinner during the 1st period, to give the visitors a comfortable gap. Penguin’s forward & Michigan native, Sam Miletec got one back for the home side before the period ended.
The 2nd period went scoreless & as did much of the 3rd period, until with 4:07 remaining Derick Brassard finally snapped a rebounded puck past Ville Husso’s glove to put the Penguins within 1 goal. However Evgeny Svechnikov then beat Matt Murray, blasting the puck past his stick side with 1:21 remaining to give the Red Wings a definite victory.
Husso was big in net again tonight with 38 saves, whilst Matt Murray was under pressure having made 26 saves.
Detroit leads the series 3-1. We now head back to Detroit for Game 5, where the Red Wings could wrap it up with a win.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game 5 - 4th May, Pittsburgh @ Detroit
The Pittsburgh Penguins keep the series alive in a dramatic & rough game 5. The final score Pittsburgh 2, Detroit 1.
The Red Wings will rue the 1st few minutes of the game, when star forward, Fredrik Larsson was ejected after a game misconduct for an illegal check to Penguins Forward Daniel Sprong.
The Penguins were able to capitalise in the 2nd period, scoring twice with goals from Rust & Ennis, giving the visitors a commanding 2-0 lead going into the final period.
The Red Wings kept pushing, however could not find a way past goalie, Matt Murray. Filip Zadina had a goal disallowed, when the referee’s called a kick-in after a replay. Murray continued to keep the door shut, until finally mid-way through the 3rd period, Dylan Larkin slotted a nice one-timer to bring the home side within one goal.
The Red Wings continued to push hard in the final minutes of the game and even had a wide open tap-in from Svechnikov, miss completely that could have tied it up. However it was not to be and the series now goes back to Pittsburgh for Game 6.
Injury clouds gather over a number of players after tonight’s game with Pittsburgh captain, Sidney Crosby leaving the game injured in the 2nd period & Detroit’s Shea Weber was notably sore, gripping his elbow after a hard knock.
The Red Wings can still clinch the series in Game 6 on Friday, however the Penguins will again be doing everything to force a game 7.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game Pics – See Inside Spoiler
Game 6 - 6th May, Detroit @ Pittsburgh
The Penguins have tied the series & forced game 7, after defeating Detroit tonight 3-2 in game 6 at PPG Paints Arena.
Tyler Ennis scored twice in the Penguins victory, where for the 2nd game in a row, the Penguins looked to be in firm control.
For the Red Wings, Evgeny Svechnikov & Jeff Skinner each scored & had the game tied at 2-2 mid way through the 3rd period, however when Ennis scored his 2nd, the visitors had no answer in return.
The Penguins have done a mighty fine job coming back from a 3-1 series defecit & it will all come down to game 7 in Detroit.
Fredrik Larsson has gone stone cold since his 4 goal haul in game 1. This year’s Calder Trophy favorite, has not added a goal or assist since, & had himself scrubbed out early in game 5 after a game misconduct. Head-Coach Jeff Blashill will definitely want more from his elite wing man.
Game 7 is set to be played on Sunday night at Little Caesars Arena where the winner takes all.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game 7 – 8th May, Pittsburgh @ Detroit
After dropping Games 5 & 6 the Detroit Red Wings have defeated the Pittsurgh Penguins 5-1 in Game 7 to advance to the Eastern Conference Final where they will meet the New York Rangers.
The Penguins were dogged with sloppy game play defensively in the 1st period, allowing 3 1st period goals to the Red Wings. Larkin, Mantha & Larsson, who had been quiet since Game 1, scored the majors for the Wings.
From the gap created on the scoreboard, the Penguins could not recover. The visitors did manage to take one back with the 1st goal of the 2nd period, through a brilliant effort from defenseman, Marc Methot, to give them some hope, however the Red Wings recovered, adding another major, from Jeff Skinner, to their tally to make it 4-1.
Wings Defenseman, Jake Muzzin added one more goal for Detroit in the final period, sending the score to 5-1 and that was the final nail in the coffin for the Penguin’s season.
Overall a brilliant 7 close series, the up & coming Detroit Red Wings advance to the next round after a major scare from championship-calibre Pittsburgh.
Detroit’s next opponent in the Eastern Conference Final will not be any easier in the New York Rangers, who ousted fellow Metropolitan Division rival, Philadelphia in 5 games.
3 Stars of the Game:

Series Wrap Up:
A tough series for Detroit & it’s fans alike. Just glad the team had it in them to recover after losing games 5 & 6.
To begin with, it appeared that the series might be over in 5 games, however Pittsburgh being the true Championship calibre hockey team they are, recovered to tie the series & force game 7.
The injury to Sidney Crosby in game 5 did not help their cause, however they did win 2 of 3 games without him.
I believe we managed as best we could with utilising our roster to get the series win. We knew that Larsson would be targeted after his Game 1, 4 goal haul. Larsson did not score a single point from Game 2 through to the end of Game 6. We adjusted his line partners several times to try and counter balance the opposition’s tag on him. Dylan Larkin moved up into the 1st with several different wingers changing in & out on the right, such as Skinner, Zadina, Svechnikov & Mantha.
Speaking of Zadina. He is ice-cold at the moment, currently with 2 assists in 12 games. He has been on the ice at the right times when the team is scoring, however he just isn’t involved enough. For an elite player of his status, he needs to be more in the present. After Game 5, he was shifted down to the 3rd line and Evgeny Svechnikov moved up to play on the 1st with Larkin & Larsson.
In game 5 we lost Shea Weber to injury, who is our toughest body, however again with some management in the defensive pairings, I believe we counteracted his loss as best as possible. Weber may miss 1 or 2 games going into the Conference Final however we should get him back soon enough.
Looking ahead, we are up against the New York Rangers who finished as the 2nd Wild Card in the Eastern Conference. A team with great skill, who had it tough in a division that boasts Columbus, Washington, Philadelphia & Pittsburgh. All those other teams are gone now & only the Red Wings stand in their way for a Cup Final appearance.
An example of their skill & potency is the 4 game demolition they dealt to Columbus, who were the Presidents Trophy Winners, in round 1. Then they followed up the next round & dismantled Philadelphia in 5 games in round 2.
The biggest road-block to our success in this 3rd round against the Rangers will be none other than goalie, Andrei Vasilevskiy, who replaced Henrik Lundqvist as the number 1 goalie in the team. I would go as far as saying he is currently the league’s best goal tender, he has also caused us at Detroit considerable heart-ache in the past during his years at Tampa Bay (though not for me when I was at Tampa!).
Last season, he was the major factor to our 1st round departure in last season’s playoffs series against the Bolts. This time we face him in a Rangers Jersey.
This isn’t going to be easy, but again I have faith in my boys & they’ll do everything they can to make that Stanley Cup Final.
Injury Update:
4th May, D Shea Weber – Elbow – Missed Games 6 & 7. Should return Game 2 or 3 of next series.

Game 1 - 10th May, New York @ Detroit
The Detroit Red Wings have taken game 1 with a close but decisive 2-0 victory over the New York Rangers.
This series promises to be a competition of 2 of the league’s best goalies in Vasilevskiy & Husso & they did not disappoint in game 1. However it was Ville Husso who takes the win with 30 saves and a shutout. Vasilevskiy also played extremely well, though he would be disappointed with the loss. The elite goalie made 26 saves in tonight’s loss, allowing a goal from Skinner during the 1st period & Defenseman Callan Foote during the 2nd.
The Red Wings suffered one casualty in tonight’s game. Andreas Athanasiou left the game after being struck by the puck whilst blocking the net during the 1st period and did not return.

Breaking News...
The Red Wings have achieved what every team with home Ice advantage wants - a 2 game series lead after game 2, from tonight’s 5-2 victory over the Rangers.
Detroit’s fans had plenty to cheer about early, when Jeff Skinner & Anthony Mantha tallied a goal each during the 1st period. Rangers Centerman, Alex Steen scored the 1st of 2 goals during the 2nd period, however his goal was met with immediate resistance, with Martin Frk scoring to put the Red Wings back in front by 2.
Kirby Dach & Joe Veleno then tallied to put the score out to 5-1 by midway through the final period. Alex Steen was able to score once more with 2:55 remaining to give the Rangers some positivity before leaving the ice.
Defenseman Shea Weber was great in his 1st game back from injury, the veteran tallying 3 assists in tonight’s win to earn the game’s 1st star award.
The Red Wings now lead the series 2-0, as the teams now head to Madison Square Garden to play games 3 & 4.

The Rangers strike back in Game 3 with a 5-2 victory over the Red Wings, with the series now sitting at 2-1.
The Rangers capitalised on Red Wings errors during the 2nd period, tallying 3 goals from Teravainen, Pionk & Steen.
Fredrik Larsson netted 2 goals in tonight’s loss, during the 2nd & 3rd periods, however the Rangers were able to find a way around Ville Husso tonight who did not play a great game, letting in 5 goals & making 22 saves.
Andrei Vasilevskiy rebounded from his game 2 performance, making 26 saves during tonight’s win.
Wings Defenseman Jacob Trouba left the ice during the late stages of the 3rd period gripping the back of his leg, it is believed he may have strained his hamstring, in what cannot be good news for the Red Wings defense.

Game 4 - 16th May, Detroit @ New York
New York have tied the series 2-2, after tonight’s 3-1 victory over Detroit at Madison Square Garden.
Red Wings Center, Dylan Larkin scored in the 1st period to put the Wings in front, however near the end of the 2nd period, Alex Steen scored his 4th goal in 4 games to tie the game.
In the 3rd period the Rangers then took the lead when Pavel Buchnevich scored with 9:05 remaining & then Mikkel Boedker scored within a minute of play resuming to put the result beyond doubt.
Vasilevskiy has recovered well from some tough games at the start of the series. Tonight the star goalie made 30 saves in the big win.
Detroit’s Ville Husso drops his 2nd in a row. He comes away from tonight’s game having made 23 saves in the loss.
The Red Wings may have lost another Defenseman in tonight’s loss. Shea Weber left the ice after a fight with Mikkel Boedker, with what appeared to be an injury to his left hand.
With the series now tied at 2-2, the teams now head back to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, for Game 5.

The Detroit Red Wings have won Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final 5-0 & placing them 1 win away from a berth to the Stanley Cup Final.
Tonight luck was on Detroit’s side, as the team’s big guns managed to find the net, whilst at the other end, Ville Husso was a stone wall, earning his 2nd shutout of this series.
Anthony Mantha opened the scoring during the 1st period & was followed by goals in the 2nd period from Fredrik Larsson & Dylan Larkin.
Most of the 3rd period went without score until the Rangers found themselves in the penalty box, opening an opportunity for denfenseman, Dennis Cholowski to score his 1st career playoffs goal.
Both sides sustained an inury tonight with more defensemen going down.
Detroit’s Callan Foote received an injury from being struck by the puck whilst in front of the net & New York’s Danny Dekeyser (& former Wing) was helped off the ice after a big collision with Tyler Bertuzzi.
The Series now heads back to New York for Game 6.

Breaking News...
The Detroit Red Wings have advanced through to the 2022 Stanley Cup Final after defeating the New York Rangers 3-2 tonight at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers held a 2-1 lead over the Red Wings going into the final period & it almost appeared that a game 7 might be inevitable.
That is, right up until 6:33 remaining, Jeff Skinner scored the 1st of 2 goals to tie the game. Another 2:03 later, Skinner netted then netted his 2nd goal to punch the Red Wings ticket to the Stanley Cup Final.
After the siren, a dejected but resilient New York crowd cheered their Rangers off the ice, who may have fallen short of the mark, but had an outstanding run in season 2021/22.
The Red Wings will now face the winner of the Western Conference Final series, currently being played out between the Dallas Stars & the Winnipeg Jets.

Breaking News...
Just four more wins seperate the Detroit Red Wings from a Stanley Cup.
Another close series, the competition between Husso & Vasilevskiy in net really come to the fore as promised.
Watching game 6 play out (in simulation), with only precious minutes remaining I had almost resigned to having to make preparations for game 7 at home in Detroit.
However with very little time left to go in the game, Jeff Skinner made himself an instant hero - scoring twice, to outscore the Rangers & booking us into the big show.
To think going back to the draft of 2020, at the completion of my 2nd season at the helm, I very nearly traded Skinner away to Tampa Bay in the deal to acquire Callan Foote. I am certain I can say now, I am glad I did not take that option.
In game 6, Coach Blashill adjusted the lines, sending Dach & Skinner to the 2nd line & bringing Larkin & Mantha to the 1st line. It was a manoeuvre that had paid off thankfully. Moving into next round, we will probably keep it set like that. It is great to see guys like Skinner, Mantha & Larkin really stepping up, taking a lot of weight off Larsson, who although has had some hot games, has possibly struggled with the pressure in his 1st post-season.
We had a run of minor injuries this series, particularly with our defensemen, with Weber missing at the start from the previous round, then only getting in 2 games before going down again with his hand. Then add Trouba & Foote to this mix. We will keep Shaw up from the minors as long as possible. For a player that has only played 1 NHL game before, held his own quite well for the 2 games he played in this series. I’m looking forward to him trying out with us next season.
We now wait to see who we have to face in the next round, be it either last years Champions, Winnipeg, or Dallas, I believe the boys are up to the task. It’s going to be a big moment for this team, I didn’t expect to see us here this soon, but we will do our best to make the most of it.

Game 1 - 22nd May, Dallas @ Detroit
The Red Wings have claimed first blood in the Stanley Cup Final series, coming back from a 2-1 deficit to win 4-3 over the Dallas Stars.
Anthony Mantha possibly played the game of his career, scoring a hat-trick, helping push his team to victory.
Tonight, 5 of the 7 goals scored were from power plays, with the penalty box door being very busy during the 1st & 2nd periods on both sides.
Mantha scored the 1st goal of the game whilst on a power play, however only minutes later, the Red Wings drew 2 penalties, giving the Stars a 5-on-3 powerplay, Stars forward Valeri Nichushkin capitalised on the Wings sloppiness & scored twice within a minute to put the Stars in front 2-1, which carried into the 1st break.
With only 1:06 off the clock in the 2nd period, Mantha scored his 2nd goal, a scrappy, at net, flick in, to tie the game 2-2.
Midway through the period Stars Alternate Captain, Tyler Seguin then put his team back in front with a neat deflection that gave Wings goalie no chance at making a save, however shortly after once again, Mantha answered the call, netting a wrist shot to complete his 1st career Playoffs hat-trick, & tying the game once more at 3-3.
The final period was high intensity action & the penalty box stayed empty. With 12:38 remaining, Filip Zadina crossed the puck to Jacob Trouba who blazed the puck into the back of the net. Trouba’s one-timer goal proved to be the game winner with no further score from either side.
The Red Wings have captured a handy 1-0 series lead with tonight’s victory, we’ll be back here at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday night for Game 2.

Game 2 - 24th May, Dallas @ Detroit
The Dallas Stars split the series in Detroit, taking what could be a crucial win in tonight’s 3-2 overtime victory over the Red Wings.
Despite holding a 2-1 lead over the Stars moving into the final period, the Red Wings weren’t able to hold their lead for long, when Josh Dickinson scored, 2 minutes in, to tie the Game.
With the game deadlocked at 2-2 by the end of regulation, overtime ensued. With the game on the line, Stars Defenseman, Ryan Ellis netted the game winner with 4:20 expired, to give the Stars a much needed upset win.
Red Wings’ Ville Husso was busy tonight, facing 40 shots. Husso made 37 saves in the loss, whilst Stars’ Ben Bishop made a great 33 saves to notch a win.
The series now heads to Dallas for games 3 & 4.

Breaking News...
The Red Wings made up for their game 2 home loss & take game 3 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, with a 4-2 victory over the Stars..
The game was tied moving into the 3rd period at 2-2. In under a minute of resumption of play, Red Wings wingman, Evgeny Svechnikov netted his 2nd goal for the game, to give the visitors the lead. With only another 3 minutes of play later, Anthony Mantha scored his 11th for the playoffs, to propel the Wings further in front by 2 goals.
The Stars put plenty of pressure on net, however Ville Husso & the Wings defense kept their nerve, winning the game, making 35 saves.
Stars Goalie Ben Bishop accumulated 29 saves, however it was a tough 3rd period.
Tonight, Red Wings Head-Coach, Jeff Blashill moved star Rookie Fredrik Larsson to the 2nd line to accompany Dach & Svechnikov, & it appeared to pay off with Larsson & Dach both contributing with assists to both of Svechnikov’s goals.
In what is hopefully not a critical blow for the Wings defense, Shea Weber succumbed to a lower body injury midway through the final period, the veteran left the ice and did not return.

The Dallas Stars square the series at 2 apiece with another close contest, defeating the Detroit Red Wings in overtime.
The Stars held a 2 goal lead moving into the final period. Red Wings’ defenseman, Colton Parayko scored with 8 minutes remaining, bringing the Wings within 1 goal of the Stars lead. Then with only 2 minutes remaining Andreas Athanasiou scored which ultimately forced the game into overtime.
Overtime played out for 6:13 until Tyler Seguin netted the game winner, an uncanny goal that entered the net from a tight point, on the left-side.
With the series tied at 2-2, we now head back to Little Caesars Arena for game 5.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game 5 - 30th May, Dallas @ Detroit
The Detroit Red Wings move 1 win away from a Stanley Cup after cruising to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Dallas Stars tonight at Little Caesars Arena.
The Stars had no answers for an aggressive Red Wings defense, that only allowed the Stars to make 22 shots on net all game. Ville Husso was up to the challenge stopping everything in his path.
Zadina, Svechnikov, Dach & Frk were Detroit’s goal scorers, with Zadina & Dach also tallying an assist each.
Tonight was by far Filip Zadina’s best game for the whole playoffs, however late in the last period the 22 year old winger took a hard knock near the end of the game & left the ice noticeably dazed & in pain. It will be a nervous wait for Detroit fans to see if he will be healthy for game 6.
With tonight’s game in the bag, the Red Wings now lead the series 3-2 & they could win it all in Dallas. However in the Red Wings way, are the Stars who have been red hot at home & will be giving everything to keep the series alive to push to a game 7.

Dallas have won game 6 at home, a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings, pushing the Stanley Cup Final to Game 7, where the winner will take all.
The game was tied 2-2 at the commencement of the final period, however goals from Stars forward’s, Tyler Seguin & Josh Robertson gave the home team the boost they needed.
Red Wings rookie forward, Joe Veleno scored a late goal with 3:55 remaining to give the Red Wings half a chance at tying & with 1:20 to spare, the visitors laid everything on the line, pulling Ville Husso. However the writing was on the wall with no further score & the Stars take the win & tie the series 3-3.
The series now head back to Detroit where the decider will be played. In two days, there will be a new Stanley Cup Champion.

Breaking News...
The Detroit Red Wings are the 2022 Stanley Cup Champions, after defeating the Dallas Stars 3-0 tonight at Little Caesars Arena.
In true Game 7 fashion, the 1st 2 periods were full of close calls, hard hits & near misses with both teams remaining scoreless right through to the final break.
With the commencement of the 3rd period, the intensity was insane with the crowd going beserk at every play. It was with only 1:09 spent on the clock, the man of the hour, Defenseman Jacob Trouba scored what would prove to be the game winning goal. Trouba received the puck from a faceoff draw which was won by Kirby Dach. Trouba snapped the puck at goal & scored to put the Detroit Red Wings in front & on the path to becoming this season’s champions.
The Red Wings held their nerve with their precarious 1-0 lead intact. With only a minute to spare, the Stars pulled goalie, Ben Bishop & went on the attack.
The Wings held on until finally Tyler Bertuzzi was able to intercept & escape far enough with the puck and score on an empty net, with 11 seconds remaining, to put the score at 2-0 and seal the Championship completely.
From the next puck dorp with only 11 seconds to spare & the energy drained from their opponents, Kirby Dach won the faceoff draw & with 5 seconds remaining, the player who won the Stanley Cup for the Red Wings, Jacob Trouba played a slap shot that sizzled past Bishop’s head & into the net, then taking the Wings lead out to 3.
It delayed the inevitable, however with the sounding of the final siren, Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena exploded into epic cheer – the Red Wings were crowned the 2022 Stanley Cup Champions.
Prior to the Cup presentation, Anthony Mantha was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for the playoffs MVP. Mantha’s post-season concluded with 26 points (12g,14a) from 25 games.
For Jacob Trouba, he is officially a back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion, after winning with Winnipeg last season & now winning with Detroit this season.
That’s it from us @ NBCSN, we hope you enjoyed sticking with us through season 21/22.
For now, thank you & Goodnight
(Honestly this was a great game to play. The scores were locked at 0-0 after 2 periods, both teams had their chances, both with 16 shots on net. Then Trouba scored early in the 3rd to take the lead, but Dallas kept pressing and even in the dying minutes, it looked like they might tie the game – like this game is insufferably ominous for - lol. It wasn’t until Bertuzzi scored his empty netter with 11 seconds left, that the pressure was finally off. It was one of the more enjoyable / high pressure / close games I have played – win or lose. Probably would have cried if I lost :P )

The Final Siren blows: Detroit are crowned Champions:
Conn Smythe Trophy Winner – Anthony Mantha.
Well deserved winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy – 26 points (12g,14a) in 25 games.
Mantha’s contribution during the playoffs & this series against Dallas has been instrumental to the Wings championship win.
Dylan Larkin hauls the Stanley Cup & the celebration
The Team Photo:
If you asked me at the beginning of this season (even mid-way through) what our chances were of winning the Stanley Cup this season, I would probably would have said very little. But here we are, what a great feeling!
There have been some key moves that have attributed to this early success. Perhaps some of the more memorable changes & improvements over these 4 seasons were (in no particular order):
Giving Dylan Larkin the Captaincy in 2020/21 - I like to think of this guy as the heart & soul of the team. Larkin has been an inspirational leader, who leads from the front, leads by example & gets dirty when he needs to. If his players take a beating, Larks drops the gloves & stands up for them. Can't ask anything more of this young man.
The Signing of Jeff Skinner for season 2019/20 - when we signed Jeff to his original 2 year contract I didn't think he would have much steam past the expiry of his contract, but he got to the end of it and then we gave him an extension. He has been a big key to the success here.
Anthony Mantha's 7 year Extension contract in 2020/21 - It almost appeared we might lose Mo, however we dangled a big carrot & he accepted. Now the young man is a Conn Smythe Trophy winner.
The Trade for Shea Weber at 2020/21 Trade Deadline - Have to admit this was a big gamble, we acquired Weber, then aged 35, from Montreal for 2 very promising prospects (Berggren & Gilroy). 1 Season later, he has a Championship ring. We do have issues arising in the years to come if Weber elects to play on, with his current contract being worth $7.855M per year with still 5 years to run on it. We're ok for next season, however we will need to evaluate where we go with him past that.
The Acquisition of Callan Foote from Tampa Bay - Foote, perhaps still has some more to go to prove himself as the player I believe he could be, however he has played a pivotal role, predominantly in the 3rd pairing this season, with the ability to move up to the 2nd. I honestly want a bit more out of him in the season to come, however he is still an acquisition I have been happy with.
Trading Calvin de Haan to St Louis for 2020 1st round pick & Ville Husso on Draft day - We were dead keen on picking up Amrit Shaw in the final stages of the 1st round of the 2020 draft & we were looking for a trade partner. St Louis, a dominant force in 2019/20, came to the party & dealt us their 1st round pick (we acquired Shaw), however the real gem here was the acquisition of Ville Husso, who won the AHL's playoffs MVP, winning a championship with the San Antonio Rampage. Husso of course went on to share starting duties with Bernier last season, & this season he was our regular starter & played all 25 playoffs games, earning a Stanley Cup.
Signing Jake Muzzin from Free Agency in 2020 -Muzzin has been a gem in the defensive end for us over his 2 seasons with us. We have given him huge minutes and he arose to the task. This season after some juggling, he settled onto the 1st defensive pairing with Parayko & didn't look back.
The acquisition of Colorado's 2021 1st Round Draft Pick - When Colorado approached me with the offer of giving them Alex Killorn (who was acquired through the Foote acquisition from TB), plus some minor draft picks, in exchange for their 2021 1st round draft pick, I thought it was a no brainer, however I had no idea how that acquisition would play such a pivotal part in this team's rebuild. We had no indication that Colorado would have such a poor season in 2020/21 & suddenly here we were with pick number #1 & the ability to pick the most sought after rookie in Fredrik Larsson. Although Freddy went quiet in the Cup final series, he is the major stepping stone to this teams success this year & in years to come.
Signing Jacob Trouba during Free Agency - At the beginning of this season's Free Agency period, the Jets had let go of Dustin Byfuglien & Jacob Trouba. I didn't think Big Buff (Byfuglien) was a good fit for us, however Trouba felt like he would be perfect if we could get him to sign with us. Trouba had a hard year, particularly battling some niggling injuries that seen him miss a number of games through the season & playoffs, however he completely proved his worth in game 7, all but winning the Stanley Cup for us off his own back. We owe a lot to this guy who has the pleasure of being a back-to-back champ.
The Acquisition of Colton Parayko from St Louis this season - This season, Chris Ilitch set me a task to further improve the team's top 4 defense pairings. After we had an average start to the season, we executed an early trade with St Louis that bought Colton across to our team. The man has been an absolute back bone for us at the defensive end, an essential piece that we badly needed. Extremely happy we have this guy on our team.
No doubt there are other key factors that have led to this early success, but those are definitely some of the most memorable.
Even better yet, we have some great up & coming talent, particularly in our defensive stocks, who will possibly cause some heartache as to fitting everyone into a roster, which I will no doubt get into a little bit later.
For now, it’s time for me to go revel with the boys & join in on the party that Detroit will be holding for the next few weeks!
