Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings

This is a fun read. The Wings are my favorite team and I do franchises with them each season. I just got 19 finally and will be starting one this weekend, so you've definitely set a model to follow.

I recently started playing NHL 12 again and started a new Wings BaGM, which has been fun to re-write history a little bit.

I wish I had the discipline to stick with a franchise and post it like you do. Every time I start one it has fizzled though. Big ups to you for sticking with it and spending the time to create the artwork, stories, and everything else that goes into posting here!

Thanks, really appreciate the feedback, it isn’t easy finding the time to put these together sometimes & always great to hear from a fellow Wings fan.

Hope you enjoy 19. Post some updates of your progress in the ‘Hows Your Franchise Mode Going’ in the main NHL Hockey sub-forum here on Operation Sports. Would be great to hear how you go. It’s always my favourite thread & it’s what inspired me to start recording my dynasties.

Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings

              Hey Folks,

I've decided after every 5 seasons (as long as I keep going), I will post a few of the franchise statistics that I keep hidden on the front page.

I'm in the middle of updating them now & will post them next. However I thought I would post the tables of each team's performance over the last 5 years:

              Note:
The Playoffs column shows how many times that team has appeared in playoffs in the 5 years. For instance Pittsburgh & Winnipeg are the only 2 teams to have appeared in the playoffs for all 5 seasons so their 2022/23 playoffs stat is 5.

An asterisk (*) in the Div Pl (Division Place) column indicates that team won the Presidents trophy in that season.

An asterisk (*) in the Playoffs column indicates that team won the Stanley Cup

Hopefully the text in the tables is not too small - let me know if it is & I'll make the alterations to make this easier to read.

Furthermore, in the next season I'll be playing around with sliders a little more. I wasn't quite happy with the gameplay by the end of this season , so it needs a little shakeup.

Moving into the future I think I'll also modify one of my house rules regarding playing in playoffs.
My current house rule regarding how many & which playoff games I can play is:
I can choose to play Game 1 or 3 - which ever I pick, the other must be simmed.
              I play games 5 & 7.
Games 2,4,6 must be simmed. That means at least 4 games are simmed in a 7-game series.

At the moment I feel I might weigh in too much to the final result with playing 3 games out of 7, so moving forward (I think) I will change to:
I can only play 1 game, of my choice, out of Games 1-5. That means at least 4 games out of the 1st 5 will be simmed.
              Game 6 must be simmed.
              I play game 7

Should make it interesting I think. All for making a challenge harder, all whilst having fun playing a game of Hockey or 2.

Anyway hope you are still enjoying. Franchise Stats will be up soon.

              Cheers

                      2023 NHL Player Entry Draft
                      21st June 2023

                      The Result:

Going into this year’s Draft we had 5 picks to begin with & after some wheeling, dealing & trading, we completed the draft with 7 prospects. Some of who will hopefully go a long way in shaping this franchise for the better in the years to come.
Our Trade Block at the start of the Day

After what had been a fairly turbulent year with veteran defenseman, Jake Muzzin, we made the call to put him at the top of the list as a prospective trade target. We also added Jeff Skinner, who realistically were not overly keen to trade out, but thought we’d at least shop him around. We also added young defenseman, Aleksandar Petrov, who we felt, might be of interest out there.
Primary target for this draft was to pick up some good mid-range picks to select particular players who we felt could have big careers in the NHL someday.

                      Detroit Trades on Draft Day:

The Detroit Red Wings made 3 trades during the Draft. They were as follows:

                      1. Jake Muzzin Traded to Pittsburgh:
Detroit Red Wings Trade D Jake Muzzin & 2024 DET 5th Round Draft Pick to Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for 2023 PIT 1st Round Pick #26 & 2024 PIT 3rd Round Draft Pick
We were very keen on young prospect Center Abraham Ashton, who was predicted to go late in the 1st round, so we wasted no time in looking for a trade partner. Pittsburgh are a team lined with skilled veteran championship players, who have very limited shelf life & want to try for one more title before the team hits the rebuild button. The addition of Jake Muzzin is a perfect fit, being an experienced, dual championship player with the Wings, he will possibly go straight to their 1st defensive pairing, which will compliment championship veteran players like Sydney Crosby & Phil Kessel.
Jake was one of our 1st pieces we added to our blue line during our rebuild. It’s been a great ride & he goes straight to a genuine Cup contender which should round out his career nicely.

                      2. Aleksander Petrov Traded to Vegas:
Detroit Red Wings Trade D Aleksander Petrov to Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for 2023 VGK 2nd Round Pick #39
A fair swap I feel. We are keen on a Swedish Right Wing prospect by the name of Ulf Henriksen who is projected to go in the middle of the 2nd round. We give up Petrov, who we picked in the middle of Round 2 in 2021 & he will be no doubt be a very good Top 4 defenseman for Vegas, who desperately need that type of player (& could be NHL ready by next season) going into their side as part of their rebuild. Petrov’s growth would have been hindered at Detroit with a steady list of defensemen already slated to be the big part of our roster moving forward. This give Petrov the opportunity he needs.

                      3. 2022 Prospect, Rickard Huhtala traded to Vancouver
Detroit Red Wings Trade Unsigned Prospect LW Rickard Huhtala (Low Elite 65 ovr) & 2023 DET Round 4 Pick #124 to Vancouver Canucks in exchange for LW Tyler Konan (2nd year signed prospect) & 2023 VAN Round 3 Pick #87
We began to look for trade partners in the 3rd round so we could pick up defensive prospect Dante Spurgeon. The only issue was, we really didn’t have many chess pieces left that we didn’t mind giving up. Huhtala was our pick #31 in last year’s draft & although we did not sign him, the intention was there to sign him for this upcoming season. Konan will not quite be the player that Huhtala will likely become, however the big gain was the ability to pick Spurgeon, a probable future elite player at #87.

In 2023, The Detroit Red Wings Select:

                      Rd1 Pick 26 (PIT)- C Abraham Ashton 18yrs CAN (Low Elite 2-Way-Fwd)

                      Rd2 Pick 32 (NJD) - C Tate Pentzek 18yrs CAN (Medium Top6F Playmaker)

                      Rd2 Pick 39 (VGK) - RW Ulf Henriksen - 18yrs SWE (Low Elite 2-Way-Fwd)

                      Rd2 Pick 62 - C Tommy Purcell 18yrs USA (Medium Elite 2-Way-Fwd)

                      Rd3 Pick 87 (VAN) - D Dante Spurgeon 18yrs CAN (Medium Elite 2-Way-Def)

                      Rd5 Pick 155 - G Devon Holt 18yrs DEN (Medium Starter Hybrid)

                      Rd6 Pick 186 - C Owen Parra 19yrs CAN (75% Low Top6F Power Forward)

All the trades on Draft Day:
Unlike last season there was plenty of transactions in this season’s draft.

The Top 10 NHL Draftees in 2023:

                      Hold on to your hats...

Pick #1 – New Jersey - C Marcus Ledin - Medium Elite SNP

Pick #2 – Calgary Flames - RW Dwayne Calico - Medium Elite SNP

Pick #3 – Chicago Blackhawks - RW Mika Voutilainen - Medium Franchise SNP

Pick #4 – Tampa Bay - D Gord Silvester - Medium Elite DFD

Pick #5 – Toronto Maple Leafs - D James Matheson - Medium Elite DFD

Pick #6 – Washington Capitals - LW Maximilian Holzer - Medium Top6F SNP

                      Pick #7 – Nashville Predators - C Skylar Holden - Medium Top6F

Pick #8 – Los Angeles Kings - RW Rod Gargiulo - Medium Top6F SNP

Pick #9 – Vegas Golden Knights - LW Eli Osborne - 75% Medium Top9F SNP

Pick #10 – New York Rangers – RW Bryan Jammes (Korean!) – 50% Medium Elite SNP

                      NHL Draft Wrap Up:
…. I don’t believe it…. Chicago, who were elevated 9 places in the lottery, have possibly got the biggest steal ever with New Jersey & Calgary overlooking Medium Franchise prospect, Mika Voutilainen. I’m lost for words…
New Jersey, who have still picked an extremely good player in Ledin, completely perplex me why they have made the decision to go with yet another Medium Elite Center, when already they have 24yr old Nico Hischier as their 1st Line Center, as well as another already established 20 year old Medium Elite Center on their 2nd line, as well as Stefan Gustavsson, their pick #5 from last season, who –you guessed it – is a medium elite center. They could have had Voutilainen, who could be the next Patrick Kane, sitting on the Right Wing alongside Hischier or one of their other already highly touted centers….
And Calgary… well same story but I’m not going to go into it.
Instead, the Blackhawks will replace 35 year old Patrick Kane as the centrepiece of their lineup with another player of the same calibre as him for years to come. Well done Chicago, I guess is all I can say.

Ok now to our draft. We made a couple of decent sized trades that will see 2 medium Elite potential prospects get the chance to join our roster. I believe out of all players that were drafted this year by us, the only one I think might be a chance to get an immediate Entry Level Contract will be Abraham Ashton who showed some pretty good skills during our scouting trips.
Re-sign Week is coming up & we have some big decisions to make on the future of a few players. None more important than that of Claude Giroux…

Looks like another good draft for you. Excited to see what you do with the re-signing period and then free agency.

I liked seeing the yearly results of each team. It's funny you're using the Yzerman storyline, and then your rise up the standings basically coincides with Tampa plummeting to the bottom of the division.

G Curtis Gardiner, 20yrs 65ovr Med Fringe Starter - Released, Unsigned Prospect

Givani Smith leaves the Wings, wanting more ice-time. This will leave a small hole to fill, he was especially well-utilised on the team’s Penalty Kill.

We had somewhat of a cleanout at Grand Rapids – Megan, Fritz, Hathaway & Chelios were released to make way for some younger blood that could not have been given the same opportunity had we given extensions to these players.

                          Contract Extensions Signed
                          C Claude Giroux, 35yrs 90ovr Exact Top6F – Signed 1yr extension @ $6.9M

                          D Dylan McIlrath, 31yrs 74ovr Exact 7thD - Signed 2-way extension - 2yrs @ $0.875M per season
                          D Michael Paliotta, 30yrs 71ovr Exact AHLTop2D - Signed 2-way extension - 1yr @ $0.775M
                          G Marcus Hogberg, 28yrs 76ovr Exact Fringe Starter - Signed 2-way extension - 1yr @ $0.95M

Claude Giroux was clearly the big fish we had to make a decision on. I have had a number of talks with G over the last few weeks & we have decided to go with another year extension, with the possibility of a +1 after that.
G will definitely see a drop in his ice-time this coming season, with the intention of elevating both Dach & Larkin to the 1st 2 lines, plus I would like him to mentor these guys, plus Veleno.

Michael Stone gets another year. He had a brilliant season with Grand Rapids & capped it off being part of the Stanley Cup team in the last few games. If there is room, I’d even like to give him a shot or 2 on the Red Wings roster, however we have to weigh up whether we want to gamble him away to waivers at some point.

Marcus Hogberg was an absolute must-have, after a standout season. If we were to lose Husso or Chistov to injury, he would be a definite back-up option for the Wings.

                          RFA Qualified Tenders - Status:
                          C Stelio Mattheos 24yrs 77ovr Med Bottom6F – RFA Tender Qualified & Accepted – Signed 2-Way extension - 1yr @ 1.055M
                          D Gustav Lindstrom, 24yrs 76ovr Med Top6D – RFA Tender Qualified & Accepted – Signed 2-Way extension - 1yr @ 1.055M
G Dylan Wells, 25yrs 76ovr Med Backup – RFA Tender Qualified - Decision From Player Pending

There is plenty of depth at Grand Rapids, which gives the Red Wings plenty to choose from in times of need. These 3 players are no exception.
Mattheos was another player who has grown substantially over the past 2-3 seasons. There may be an opportunity to bring him up into the Wings roster this upcoming season, however he too would have to go through waivers, if his tenure on the main roster was not a permanent one.

                          Entry Level Contracts (ELC) Signed:
                          C Donavan Delmas, 21yrs 66ovr Med Bottom6F - ELC Signed - 3yrs @ $0.825M per season (Drafted 2021 Pick #178)
                          LW Luis Schauer, 20yrs 67ovr Low Elite - ELC Signed - 3yrs @ $0.950M per season (Drafted 2021 Pick #141)
                          RW Guy Castonguay, 19yrs 74ovr Low Elite - ELC Signed - 3yrs @ $0.950M per season (Drafted 2021 Pick #23)
                          D Parker McLaren, 19yrs 61ovr Low Elite - ELC Signed - 3yrs @ $0.950M per season (Drafted 2021 Pick #172)
                          D Brian Barnett, 19yrs 65ovr Med Top6D - ELC Signed - 3yrs @ $0.950M per season (Drafted 2022 Pick #98)

Signed 5 rookies to this point so far, we are looking closely at the potential of signing Abraham Ashton from this year’s draft also.
Of the 11 rookies we drafted in 2021, we have signed 7 of them, including Petrov, who we traded at this year’s draft. 3 others from that draft we have traded as unsigned prospects to other teams who have issued them all ELC’s. The only player not to have been given an ELC is pick #209, goalie Curtis Gardiner, who we have released this week. Although it did not pan out for Gardiner, I believe he has a career in the NHL ahead.

I liked seeing the yearly results of each team. It's funny you're using the Yzerman storyline, and then your rise up the standings basically coincides with Tampa plummeting to the bottom of the division.
Thanks, I kind of feel sorry for Tampa, they still have Stamkos & Kucherov tearing it up, however the rest of the team around them has all but abandoned them & headed elsewhere.

I think Free Agency for the Red Wings this upcoming season may be somewhat quiet. There are a number of players I'd like to bring up, plus some of the younger, already established players are screaming out for more ice-time.

The game is now at 1st July on day 1 of Free Agency, the list of available FA's has a few interesting names on it, but nothing close to the scale of last season. So we'll see I guess

                              NHL Free Agency 2023
                              PART 1 - The List

                              ‪1ST July 2023‬

Top Free Agents available in 2023:

Here is this year's top players on the Free Agency list. It’s a good list of available players, however nothing compared to the likes of last season.
I didn’t think I’d see the day when Johnathan Drouin would be expecting $11M+ per season. Max Domi & Kyle Connor will be very welcome additions to any team's lineup.

Currently we have close to $10M in available cap with the departure of Jake Muzzin, however I don't believe we will be actively pursuing any big ticket players. Number 1 reason is I would like us to blood some of our prospects, plus focus on giving already established players more ice time.
However that could all change if we were to look at various trade options.
Additionally Fredrik Larsson is entering his last season on his Entry-Level-Contract this season, so we will need plenty of room in the following year after this one to accommodate what could be a very large cap hit.
