NHL Trade Buzz: Detroit Looking to Sell
Yzerman open to offers on D-Men Green & Dekeyser, also shopping Vanek
NHL.com @NHL
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st February 2019,
Steve Yzerman has placed Mike Green, Danny Dekeyser & Thomas Vanek on the trade block in the lead up to this years Trade Deadline which comes to a close @ 3pm ET on the 26th February.
Although currently only sitting outside of a playoffs wild card spot on percentage, Yzerman has made it clear the Detroit Red Wings are sellers, not buyers by putting these experienced assets on the line.
"Honestly, we have had a dream run this season, we are tracking much better than many had predicted, thanks due to the efforts of our players. However we still have our mission & we are intent on sticking to the course. This is a big roll of the dice. It might not be popular with all of our fans right now, but I hope they will see the benefits ahead." Said Yzerman.
"Yes, I have my top 2 Defensemen on the market, however either if one should go, I don't believe we would let the other go."
"(As for) Vanek, well he knows the deal, he's been here in this very same position once before 2 years ago. He is a solid veteran player & I think he would really help out a team vying for a Stanley Cup. What he does both on & off the ice around here is huge, I'd hate to lose that, but we need to think forward in terms of the future of this hockey club."
With some unknown futures ahead, Detroit will press on regardless & tonight will take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at home at Little Caesars Arena.
So who or what are the Red Wings looking for in exchange for these players?
The obvious choice is more draft picks to continue the much needed rebuild, however don't be surprised if they manage to snag an established younger player that ticks all the boxes either.
What ever the outcome, NHL.com will be there to break the news.Last edited by SeattleBattleCat; 09-28-2018, 03:18 AM.Comment

Game Results, News & Team Updates::
1st February, Toronto @ Detroit
The Red Wings fail to hold a 3 goal lead in the 3rd period, but are lucky enough to hold onto a point as they go down 5-4 after a shootout.
It was Toronto who got to a flying start, when only 19 seconds into the 1st period, Mitchell Marner scored off a wrist shot, giving the visitors an edge.
However Detroit pressed hard in response and piled on 3 goals in the very same period, past a struggling Frederick Anderson, tallied by Glendening, Zadina & Dekeyser.
In the 2nd Period, Anthony Mantha scored to produce what many would have thought an unassailable 4-1 lead going into the 3rd period.
In the 3rd period, only 1:09 down & Leafs Right winger, Connor Brown found the net past Jimmy Howard’s glove. With 10:38 remaining, William Nylander scored to reduce the gap to 4-3. Then very next play & only 34 seconds later at 10:04, Mitchell Marner broke away to score on the breakaway to tie the game & silence the crowd.
With no one capitalising in overtime the shootout ensued & Austin Matthews hailed the hero for Toronto with the game winner.
A tough one to lose for Detroit, they will try to reset for tomorrow night when they head to Ottawa to play the Senators
3 Stars of the Game:
2nd February, Detroit @ Ottawa
The Red Wings prevail in overtime with a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators.
Andreas Athanasiou scored with 2:05 remaining to give the Wings the win.
Ottawa almost stole the game away from Detroit with Mike Stone netting a goal with 33.6 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime..
Filip Zadina keeps a good run going, scoring his 2nd goal in 2 games. His goal tonight drew the scores level at 1-1 in the 2nd period.
In trade news - directly after the game it was announced Ottawa Centerman Ryan Dzingel, has been traded to Buffalo for Defenseman Nathan Beaulieu plus picks.

7th February, Vegas @ Detroit
Vegas comes to town and steals one away from the Red Wings, dealing out a 3-2 loss.
On what has been an extremely difficult season for Vegas, they found something extra tonight in Max Pacioretty who scored twice to hand them the win.
Niklas Kronwall & Dylan Larkin scored the majors for the Wings in the loss.

Trade News: Dekeyser Traded to Rangers
Red Wings receive 2019 1st Round Pick, plus swap 2020 3rd Round Picks as Rangers Roll Dice
8th February
NHL @NHL.COM
The New York Rangers have acquired 28 year old defenseman, Danny Dekeyser, from the Detroit Red Wings in a bid to bolster their defense stocks as the race to the playoffs begins in earnest.
Dekeyser, who has spent most of the 2018/19 season on the top defense pairing for the Red Wings, alongside Mike Green, is likely to slot into the 2nd pairing with Kevin Shattenkirk.
“The addition of Dekeyser really fills our needs here to solidify our run to the Cup, he should slot right into our defensive core very well.” New York Rangers General Manager, Jeff Gorton said today.
Red Wings General Manager, Steve Yzerman, was also quite upbeat about the trade.
“We will shuffle things around to cover the absence of Danny in our defensive core. We have had struggles throughout the season, with injuries and we seem to have filled those gaps fine, so I am not worried with Coach’s (Jeff Blashill) ability to make do.
What we have got from this deal, is another 1st round pick, which will complement our own (1st round) pick nicely, just as Ken Holland got out of last years draft, picking up Zadina & Veleno.”
With todays trade taking place, the Red Wings have called up recent acquisition through waivers, defenseman Christopher Bigras, from Grand Rapids.
Key Notes:
D Danny Dekeyser traded to Rangers
Red Wings Receive 2019 1st Round Draft Pick

A red hot Buffalo Sabres have handed Detroit a 2-0 shutout loss.
Sabres’ Jason Pominville scored in the 1st period with the rest of the game going without further score until Sam Reinhart flicked in an empty netter with 0:39 seconds remaining on the game clock.
Jimmy Howard put in a solid game, making 31 saves, however the Wings’ skaters were not able to beat Buffalo Goalie Carter Hutton who records a brilliant shutout.
Recently acquired through a trade with Ottawa, Sabres center Ryan Dzingel played against the Red Wings for the 2nd time in 2 nights. Dzingel played 16:56 for his new team and was +1.
Detroit will now head for Chicago where they take on the Blackhawks tomorrow night.
3 Stars of the Game:
10th February, Detroit @ Chicago
A 4 goal run in the first 11 minutes of the 1st period has propelled the Red Wings to a convincing 6-3 victory over the Blackhawks.
Wings forwards had a field day in front of net during the 1st period & Hawks Goalie Cam Ward, seemed to not be able to stop anything. With the score sitting at 4-0, the Blackhawks removed Ward and put in Delia. A small comeback ensued with the home team scoring twice to reduce the deficit to 4-2 by the 1st intermission.
The damage had been done and the Wings, who have been struggling of late, have come away with a much needed win against one of the better teams in the competition.
Filip Zadina tallied a goal and 2 assists, Mantha tallied 2 assists, and Larkin, Nielsen & Vanek each tallied a goal and an assist each.
Detroit now head for Nashville on the last of a 3 game away stand.
3 Stars of the Game:
12th February, Detroit @ Nashville
The Red Wings rallied later but to no avail, going down 3-2 to the Nashville Predators on the road.
Tonight’s loss completes this 3 game away trip, having won 1 game and lost 2.
Evgeni Svechnikov scored a goal plus an assist, earning him the game’s 3rd star. The young left winger is experiencing some extra ice time on the 2nd line with Athanasiou & Zadina.
3 Stars of the Game:
14th February, Ottawa @ Detroit
Gustav Nyquist nets 2 to help the Red Wings in their way to a 4-3 victory over the Senators.
Justin Abdelkader also scored in the victory, this being only his 3rd goal for the season.
Ottawa’s Mark Stone also netted 2 goals, the 2nd coming in the 3rd period, with only 8 seconds left in the game.
The Red Wings record now stands at 28-27-3. They sit 6th in the Atlantic, they are 6 points behind Buffalo who are in a Wild Card spot and they are 8 points clear of Ottawa in 7th.
3 Stars of the Game:
16th February, Detroit @ Philadelphia
Despite the Red Wings leading leading for most of the game, 2 quickfire Flyers goals has turned the result on its head, handing the Red Wings a 4-3 loss.
Tonight’s game is the 1st of a 2 game home / away series against the Flyers and it was looking positive for the Wings, until Sean Couturier scored to tie with 7:39 remaining in the game, & then in the very next play, James Van Riemsdyk scored with 7:23 remaining to put the Flyers up 4-3.
Martin Frk scored 2 goals & Andreas Athanasiou was the other contributor for the Red Wings, whilst James Van Riemsdyk netted 2, with Leier scoring one & Couturier scoring the game winning goal.
The Wings will get another chance to beat the Flyers tomorrow night, as both teams head to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
Tomorrow night’s game is the 1st of a 13 day, 5 game home stand.
3 Stars of the Game:
Breaking News….
17th February, Philadelphia @ Detroit
The Flyers sweep the 2 game weekend series with a convincing 4-1 win over the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.
2nd year player for the Flyers, Nolan Patrick, scored twice in the 1st period, along with a goal from d-man Ivan Provorov, which put the Flyers into a commanding 3-0 lead.
Detroit Coach, Jeff Blashill, decided the damage needed to be curtailed and pulled Bernier from the game, in favour of last night’s starter, Jimmy Howard.
Howard saved all 25 shots that were put at him, with the only other goal scored coming from an empty net in the last period.
Unfortunately the Wings could not get started on their offense, with the only goal almost scored out of pity with 2:10 remaining in the 3rd period by Jonathan Ericsson.

Trade News: Daley Traded to Jets
Traded along with 2019 4th round pick plus future pick in exchange for 2019 2nd Round pick and future pick
19th February,
Detroit have traded veteran defenseman, 35 year old Trevor Daley, to the Winnipeg Jets in just a matter of 11 days since trading Danny Dekeyser.
The trade, which was initiated by the Winnipeg Jets, see’s Daley join a Stanley Cup contender & he was traded along with Detroit’s 2019 & 2020 4th round draft picks, in exchange for the Jet’s 2019 2nd Round draft pick & 2020 5th round draft pick.
Captain Niklas Kronwall said during a brief interview today:
“It’s tough seeing another teammate go, especially one who we consider as a friend & carries so much experience with him. But this is the business and craziness of trade deadline time. As a rebuilding team, this is the reality & we have to get used to the locker room changing & some familiar faces moving on.”
With today’s pick acquisition, Detroit now have 5 picks in the first 2 rounds of the 2019 draft, which the experts are touting as another good draft in follow up from 2018.
“Obviously we’re arming ourselves for another draft that should see good talent on offer, we just need to identify who the gems are and make sure we get who we want.” Said Steve Yzmeran earlier.
After this morning's skate practice, Coach Jeff Blashill was quoted, “It’ll be tough without Trevor’s hockey sense & leadership, but we got some good kids that need ice time & this is a perfect opportunity for them to stand up and make themselves a spot on this team.”
The Red Wings have called up another rookie defenseman to fill the void in Filip Hronek, who to this point is still finding his feet in the NHL. They take on Central Division leaders, the Chicago Blackhawks at home tomorrow night in the 2nd of a 5 game home stand.
The Red Wings push Central Division leader’s, the Chicago Blackhawks to the shootout but can’t get it done, losing 2-1.
In a tightly contested game, the only scores came during the 2nd period of play, with Johnathan Toews scoring with 10:59 remaining to give the Hawks the lead, only for moments later Detroit levelling the game with Evgeny Svechnikov scoring from the blue line to tie the game.
Alex DeBrincat was the lone goal scorer in the shootout to give the visitors the win.
Jimmy Howard started again for the Wings, making 32 saves, whilst Chicago Goalie, Corey Crawford made 31 saves.
Detroit are now 0-1-1 on this current 5 game home stand with 3 more to come.

Breaking News….
Vanek Traded to Anaheim
Wings Acquire LW Kalle Kossila & 4th Round pick
22 February,
Just moments before lacing up his skates to play tonight’s home game against Minnesota, Veteran forward Thomas Vanek, got the tap on the shoulder he may have been expecting, from Coach Jeff Blashill, for some weeks now.
Only just moments before, the Red Wings & the Anaheim Ducks had come to terms on a trade that see’s Vanek head to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for 25 year old Left Winger, Kalle Kossila & a 2019 Round 4 draft pick.
Anaheim currently have a record of 31-24-5 and sit 2nd in the Pacific Division. The addition of Vanek will shore up a top 9 forward line that has not had problem in finding the net.
25 year old, French born, Finnish skater, Kalle Kossila will join his new team, the Red Wings, when they take on the San Jose Sharks on the 24th Feb. Kossila has 12 NHL games to his resume’ & has currently spent the whole season with AHL affiliate, San Diego Gulls.
“We like what Kossila could bring to this team & we will give him a shot on the Red Wings roster, perhaps through to the end of the season. It will be up to him from there to prove himself worthy of staying with the team.” Steve Yzerman told NHL.com over the phone.
With the puck set to drop in just a matter of minutes, filling Vanek’s role on the team as a late call-up is fellow veteran winger Jussi Jokinen. To date, Jokinen has only played in 11 games this season and has been a healthy scratch for the remainder.
The Deal:
Kalle Kossila
The Red Wings lose in another heartbreaking shootout, this time 2-1 to the Minnesota Wild.
It was another super impressive night in net for Jimmy Howard, making 41 saves throughout regulation & overtime, with the only goal coming in the 1st period, when Mikael Granlund brushed the puck past him on the backhand at a tight angle.
Rookie wingman Filip Zadina, was the sole goal scorer for the Red Wings late in the 3rd which pushed the game to overtime.
Again neither side could capitalise in overtime & it was Wild’s Jason Zucker who beat Howard in the shootout to win the game for the Wild.
With 2 games left in the current home stand, the wings are 0-1-2. In 2 days time they take on league leaders San Jose.
3 Stars of the Game:
24th February, San Jose @ Detroit
The Red Wings stay competitive with the league leading Sharks tonight at Little Caesars Arena, however fall short with a 3-2 loss.
All star D-man Brent Burns and Foward Joonas Donskoi put the Sharks in front early with a 2-0 lead through to the 2nd period. However a goal from alternate Captain, Justin Abdelkader, then another from Martin Frk leveled the scores at 2-2.
Thomas Hertl scored for the Sharks in the 3rd period to give them the 3-2 lead & the visitors were able to hold off the Red Wings from there.
Jimmy Howard was solid again, a shining light in bad circumstances, with 30 saves..
The Red Wings have one more home game left in this current stand, though it has been a home stand to forget with the team going 0-2-2 during these 12 days.
3 Stars of the Game:
26th February, Montreal @ Detroit
The Red Wings losing streak continues with a 4-3 loss to Montreal at home.
The Red Wings fail to pick up a win during their 5 game home stand, which is a disappointment to many.
Dylan Larkin & Anthony Mantha both tallied a goal & an assist each in the loss, with Zadina scoring the other goal.
(I accidentally intervened in this game with 14:37 remaining in the 3rd period, with the scores already @ 4-3. Despite putting up a few shots, I couldn’t impact the score board.)
3 Stars of the Game:

Wrap up:
It has a been a tough month. Only 3 wins from 13 games & currently on a 6 game slide. The 5 game home stand which should have seen some good fortune was a disaster, with a 0-3-2 record.
It didn’t seem to matter what changes were made up front for the Wings, with Larkin, Mantha, Nyquist, Zadina & Athansiou going missing for big patches when they were sorely needed. Though let’s not be too harsh on these guys, as it’s a young core and they are learning fast.
In defense it’s been doubly tough for the group considering 2 of our top 4 were traded out. A huge crater has been left for this season, however the chance to blood younger players and further opportunities for growth next season, this will eventually turn out for the best. I have been happy with Mike Green & captain Niklas Kronwalls efforts all season.
In goal, Jimmy Howard was monstrous, he put some amazing games together and has been gallant in defeat. Unfortunately you can be in great form in net but the results don’t fall our way because of poor offense which I believe was the major concern for this month.
With 18 regular season games to go & 10 points out of the playoffs race, we will get ourselves through the rest of the season as best we can. The most important thing to do from here is to develop and build for the future years.
This years Trade Deadline was tough on this GM in his 1st year at the helm. Some hard decisions on some key players had to be made and we traded away 3 key assets with the future in mond.
First we traded Danny Dekeyser, the Rangers gave us an offer of a 1st round pick which I thought was worthwhile. In hindsight, I might have counter- offered Mike Green in his place, mainly due to age difference (Green 33yrs, Dekeyser 28yrs) however I think we got a good deal. The Rangers are on the playoffs bubble, the addition of Dekeyser helps them a lot however if they do not make playoffs, we get a very good 1st round mid-range pick.
The offer from Winnipeg mid-month for Trevor Daley came as a surprise, although it meant we were seriously left short handed in the defensive zone. By this time I believe we had already lost enough games to put fear of missing playoffs aside. I think we got a great deal for Daley with a 2nd round pick in this years draft, plus a 5th round for the following year.
And finally Thomas Vanek. I felt guilty about putting him up for trade as this is the 2nd time the Detroit Red Wings have done this to him however it is possibly a indication to him as a hockey player as to how pivotally important he can be with the experience he brings. .
All going well though, Vanek joins a serious Stanley Cup contender at the Ducks & hope he might get the chance to hold the Cup above his head.
Again we got a great deal, we picked up Kalle Kossila, a 25yr old potential Top6 Forward & a 4th Round pick in this year’s draft. More than enough compensation I believe.
Right moves or not, we will see if in the years ahead if these were good moves made.

Game Results, News & Team Updates::
2nd March, Detroit @ Arizona
A 5 goal run in the 3rd period by Arizona sees the Red Wings blown out of the water, the final score 7-2.
Detroit held their own throughout the 1st 2 periods going into last period tied at 2-2, with goals from new recruit, Kalle Kossila & veteran Center Frans Nielsen.
However the floodgates were opened with Howard letting in 3 goals within the space of 1:13. Jonathan Bernier replaced Howard, however only to let in 2 goals also, only minutes later.
It was a massive game for the Coyotes led by Perlini who tallied a goal & 4 assists (5 Points), Clayton Keller with 4 assists, Plus Galchenyuk & Chychrun who both scored 2 goals each.
3 Stars of the Game:
5th March, Detroit @ Colorado
Detroit slump to an 8 game losing streak with tonight’s 7-1 thrashing handed out by Colorado.
Work rate and low morale seems to be big factors currently for the Red Wings. Forwards are failing to find the net at the offensive end, defensemen are forgetting their assignments & net minders who have holes in their gloves.
Tonight it was Bernier who was pulled during the 1st period, after allowing 3 goals in the 1st 10 minutes of the game. Jimmy Howard stepped in, however it got worse for the visitors as he then allowed 4 more goals, leading to the Red Wings 2nd consecutive blow out and the team’s 8th consecutive loss.
Dylan Larkin was the Red Wings lone scorer with Nate McKinnon and Vladislav Kamenev both scoring 2 for the Av’s.
3 Stars of the Game:
7th March, NY Rangers @ Detroit
The Wings finally snap the losing streak and defeat the Rangers 5-2 at home.
Dylan Larkin was instrumental in the team’s victory, scoring both a goal and an assist.
Team Captain Niklas Kronwall also scored in tonight’s feature.
Recently traded defenseman, Danny Dekeyser could not play for the Rangers tonight, thanks due to an ankle injury earlier in the week. It is expected he will return for the Rangers in just a few days time.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game Pics:
9th March, Detroit @ Tampa Bay
Despite leading 2-0 going into the 3rd, Detroit go down in overtime to Tampa Bay 4-3.
The Red Wings had the Lightning on the ropes for much of the 1st 2 periods, however quality finally rose to the top, with the Lightning scoring 3 straight to have almost won it in regulation. That was until Anthony Mantha blasted a wrister in from long range to tie the game at 3-3 with 2:20 remaining.
Overtime almost went to shootout, until with only 3 seconds left Detroit’s defense faltered allowing Lighting Center, Anthony Cirelli to find the net to give the Red Wings the OT loss.
Johnathan Bernier made 27 saves in the hardfought OTL.
Lightning Defenseman Victor Hedman is awarded the game’s 1st star, tallying a goal and an assist in a flawless performance.
3 Stars of the Game:
10th March, Detroit @ Florida
Tonight’s game sees the Red Wings reverse their fortunes and they win a 4-3 thriller in overtime at the BB&T Center against the Panthers.
Dylan Larkin came through for his team in OT scoring the game winner with 1:20 remaining.
However it could be said that Veteran wingman Jussi Jokinen, who has not played much hockey this season, lifted his Red Wings teammates to tonight’s win by scoring 2 goals, whilst Gustav Nyquist also scored, finally snapping an extensive scoreless streak.
Florida’s Vincent Trocheck also scored 2 goals and earned the night’s 1st star award.
3 Stars of the Game:
12th March, Detroit @ Montreal
The Wings go down 2-1 in a shootout loss to divisional rivals, the Canadiens in what was a very big night for goaltenders.
Both Howard for the Wings & Price for the Canadiens faced 36 shots each and made 35 saves in a truly great tending display.
Filip Zadina scored Detroit’s lone goal.
Former Red Wing Tomas Tatar was the man to score the game winner in the shootout.
3 Stars of the Game:
14th March - Tampa Bay @ Detroit
Detroit take Atlantic Division leaders, Tampa Bay as far as they can go, for the 2nd time in a week, but again fall short & lose 3-2 in the shootout.
The game started extremely well for the Red Wings with Zadina scoring in the 1st & Athanasiou scoring early in the 2nd to grab a 2-0 lead.
However, as the story has been throughout much of the season, Detroit just can’t quite hang on to a lead, eventually Howard conceding 2 goals later in the 2nd period by Nikita Kucherov & Brayden Point which tied the game. There were no further scores through the 3rd period & overtime, however the Lightning dominated the shooutout with goals from Stamkos, Point & Kucherov to take the game.
3 Stars of the Game:
16th March, NY Islanders @ Detroit
The Detroit Red Wings have staged an epic comeback to beat the New York Islanders 4-3 at home.
With just over 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd, the game looked to be all but in the hands of the visiting Islanders, as they held a 3-1 lead.
However with 2:19 remaining Andreas Athanasiou scored, reducing the deficit to 3-2, setting up what would be an amazing next few minutes of play.
With less than a minute remaining in regulation time, Detroit pulled netminder Jimmy Howard & put 6 skaters on the ice. With just over 27 seconds remaining, Dylan Larkin took the faceoff against Matthew Barzal in the Red Wings offensive end. Larkin won the faceoff & dished the puck out to captain Niklas Kronwall. Kronwall somehow found enough time and a clear path to sizzle a wrist shot past several players that struck Islanders goalie, Robyn Lehner, on the shoulder, that then deflected backwards & into the net.
The Red Wings are not playing playoffs this year, however Kronwall just gave the crowd something to be extremely happy about.
Then 1:27 into overtime, Anthony Mantha, whilst on a break with a couple of Islanders defenders in front of him, slotted a slapshot, again beating Lehner to give Detroit what seemed an unlikely victory.
Mantha completed the “Gordie Howe Hattrick” (goal, assist & a fight), with the game winning goal, having also scored an assist to Dylan Larkin earlier in the 3rd & as well as being involved in a fight with Islanders D-man Johnny Boychuk.
Earlier in the game the result was looking much more the opposite way. The Islanders had full control of the game, with goals from Pelech & Komarov in the 1st period, followed by a goal from Matt Martin in the 2nd, which gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Tonight’s atmosphere in Little Caesars arena was certainly electric, it was good to see happy fans leaving the building.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game Pics:
19th March, Detroit @ NY Rangers
Another game, another OTL. Detroit lose 3-2 on the road against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
It was another spirited comeback from the Red Wings, fresh off their overtime thriller a couple nights ago at home. Anthony Mantha scored in the 2nd period, followed by Evgeny Svechnikov in the 3 period to tie the game.
However it was Kevin Shattenkirk of the Rangers who would score the game winner 1:57 into overtime.
Jonathan Bernier started for the Red Wings and played very well making 34 saves, whilst Henrik Lundqvist had it a little easier at his end, making 26 saves.
Danny a Dekeyser played 25:36 on a fresh return from a minor ankle injury, it was his 1st meeting with the Red Wings since the trade in February.
3 Stars of the Game:
21st March, Detroit @ St Louis
Detroit come away from S Louis with yet another loss, shutout 3-0.
The Blues defensive pressure was too much for the Red Wings forward group, with the visitors only managing 20 shots on net all game.
For the Blues, it was much easier with Tarasenko, Fabbri & Perron all tallying majors for the win.
Filip Zadina left the ice early tonight, appearing to have injured the same shoulder that caused him to miss a game earlier in the season.
3 Stars of the Game:
23rd March, Detroit @ Vegas
Detroit stages another mini comeback however they fall short, losing 3-2 to the Golden Knights.
In what has been a tough road trip series so far, Vegas scores 3 goals early in the 1st making the gap insurmountable. Detroit’s Anthony Mantha & Andreas Athanasiou both scored goals early in the 3rd to give the Red Wings a glimmer of hope, but they just could not get there by full time.
Marc-Andre Fleury was terrific in net making 30 saves, whilst Jimmy a Howard made 22 saves in the loss.
3 Stars of the Game:
25thMarch, Detroit @ San Jose
The losses keep coming for the Red Wings. They put up a fight, however are beaten by a better opponent in the San Jose Sharks. The final score 4-3.
The Sharks dominated early with a 3 goal lead mid-way through the 2nd until Gustav Nyquist finally slotted a goal for the Wings.
Sharks Winger Evander Kane took the lead back out to 3, scoring with 9:45 remaining in the 2nd, however then with 8:33 remaining, Red Wings’ Tyler Bertuzzi scored making the score 4-2 which carried into the final break.
In the 3r period, Dylan Larkin reduced the gap to 1, scoring with 14:39 remaining, however from there the Sharks held out and take home the win. The Red Wings are 0-3-1 in the last 4 games in this current 5 game away stand. They have 1 more game left in this road trip against Buffalo
3 Stars of the Game:
Breaking News.....
Detroit go winless for 5 games as once again they are beaten 4-3.
The game turned out to be a goalfest in the 1st period, with Detroit taking an early 2-1 lead, with goals from Frk & Nyquist, until Buffalo piled on another 2 goals, through Jack Eichel & Zach Bogosian.
Rasmussen Ristolainen then scored midway in the 2nd period to put Buffalo up 4-2.
That was then followed up by a goal in the 3rd period from Red Wings Alternate Captain, Justin Abdelkader, who netted his 6th for the season, to put the Wings within 1 goal at 4-3.
Once again the score stayed within, handing the Red Wings their 5th loss in a row (0-4-1), all having come whilst on the road.
The Red Wings head home for tomorrow nights game against the New Jersey Devils and we hope they can turn around their fortunes there.
3 Stars of the Game:
29th March, New Jersey @ Detroit
New Jersey give Detroit a hockey lesson tonight in 6-2 thrashing.
Detroit accumulated 9 penalties to New Jersey’s 0. New Jersey also outshot Detroit 38 to 22 & they won the faceoff count 24 to 16. All the ingredients for a true beating.
Rookie skater Filip Zadina’s season may very well be over, when he was checked hard to the ice and play had to stop to help him from the ice.
The Devils were unstoppable piling on 5 goals in the 2nd period & 1 in the 3rd period.
Jesper Bratt & Taylor Hall featured prominently scoring 2 goals each.
The hapless Red Wings did manage 2 goals. The 1st coming from Justin Abdelkader and the 2nd coming from Evgeny Svechnikov.
Jimmy Howard was replaced by Jonathan Bernier with the score sitting at 4-1, however Bernier didn’t fare much better when he let through his very 1st shot faced, making the score 5-1.
With 4 games remaining, Coach Blashill needs to steady the ship at Detroit, get them back to playing basic hockey & try to finish out the season on a high note.
3 Stars of the Game:
Breaking News.....
Zadina’s season comes to an early end with Hamstring injury
Rookie sustains 2nd injury in a matter of days. Has been a tough introduction to NHL
30th March, 2019
When Filip Zadina went down hard in front of net early in the 1st period during the game against New Jersey last night, many thought the minor injury previously sustained to his left shoulder must have worsened.
In fact, Zadina left the ice with a hamstring injury.
Zadina had the puck behind the net & was attempting a wrap-around manoeuver when Devils forward, Travis Zajac hit him like a stone wall. The check caused Zadina to overstretch whilst going down, causing the hamstring injury.
Zadina had to be helped off the ice and did not return for the rest of the game.
Red Wings medico’s have since revealed that the injury isn’t severe, however he would be expected to miss 1-2 weeks of hockey. Unfortunately, there is only 1 week of games left in the season.
“That was hard hit. It did take time to stop seeing stars but I knew something was not right. I don’t like that I will miss rest of season, but I will support my team through last 4 games.” Said Zadina, this morning.
The Red Wings have 4 games to go. They have lost their last 7 games consecutively & dearly need a win to finish on a good note. The problem with this - they face Boston tomorrow night at home, then 2 games (home, then away) against Pittsburgh & finish the season at home against Buffalo. All of these teams are making playoffs & will be looking to pounce on a struggling Red Wings team.
The Red Wings slide to their 8th consecutive loss, losing 3-2 in the final minutes against Boston.
With 6:40 remaining the Red Wings held a 2-1 lead & were looking good for the win. That was until Jonathan Ericsson was called for a double minor penalty for high sticking, which allowed the Visitors to score twice in under 2 minutes to take the lead & win the game. The fans left the arena extremely unhappy tonight, this was a game that was in the proverbial bag for the Wings & they found a way to lose it.
3 Stars of the Game:
Wrap up:
As the months have rolled on, the task here this season has gotten tougher and tougher. The Red Wings now sit at the bottom of the Atlantic division & we are on an 8 game losing streak. It’s a streak I want coaches & players to act on fast. We have 3 games left in the season, I would very much like the team to give these last games everything they have to try and finish on some sort of positive note.
It was gut-wrenching to lose Zadina in the New Jersey game, he was so close to finishing out the season possibly as the rookie of the year. This will now go to Casey Mittelstadt.
With off-season coming up the mind will quickly change from the usual day-to-day, managing the team & operations, to thinking about & planning changes for the next season to come. One positive to come from the slide down the ladder is of course the chance at a higher draft pick.
As for my objectives set by the owners, at the start of the season, here is where I sit.
Primary Objective – Get the players salary expenditure down to within $1.5M of $70.916 target set by the owner. – On track, salary expenditure expected to finish at $72.323 (This is a tough one, I hope that I have interpreted what the game wants from this objective. Might be bad for my job prospects if incorrect)
Secondary Objective #1 – Win 33 games for the season – Currently have 31 wins for the season, with 3 more games to go (I think I might play at least 2 of the 3)
Secondary Objective #2 - Build a 2nd Car Park for the arena – Complete
Injuries:
16th February to 12th March - LW Luke Glendening - Hip Pointer - Missed 12 games
21st March - RW Filip Zadina - Shoulder injury - Missed 2 games
29th March – RW Filip Zadina – Hamstring injury – missed 4 games
Contract Extensions:
11th March, RW Martin Frk – Signed 1way Extension 3yrs @ $2.2M per yr
11th March, D Brian Lashoff - Signed 2way Extension - 1yr @ $0.775M
11th March, C Wade Megan - Signed 2way Extension - 1yr @ $0.7M
11th March, D Jake Chelios - Signed 2way Extension - 2yrs @ $0.75M per yr
Re-signed a number of players to minor contracts. It helps to get some of these guys across the line before off-season.
Veteran Defenseman & Captain Niklas Kronwall is the most notable of Red Wings players yet to sign for next season. The 38 year old is holding off from making a decision on his playing future until the off-season.
Call Ups/ Assignments:
6th March - D - Joe Hicketts called up from Grand Rapids
13th March - D - Filip Hronek reassigned to Grand Rapids
Projected Lines – 2nd April, Pittsburgh @ Detroit

Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings
So I'm thinking about the layout of my posts....
I think it may flow better if I put the individual game reports (+ news storys etc) in front of the end of month statistics (the win/loss totals, the calendar, player stats etc.).
Keen to hear thoughts, would it be better if I changed it that way for next season? Is my current layout easy enough to understand?
Cheers.Comment

Game Results, News & Team Updates::
2nd April, Pittsburgh @ Detroit
Detroit finally snap the losing streak with a hard fought 3-1 victory over the Crosby-less Penguins.
Penalties were still a problem for the Red Wings however tonight they were able hold off their opponents & kill the penalties.
Jimmy Howard put in a good tending effort, making 22 saves.
Dylan Larkin scored the Red Wings 1st goal, followed by Niklas Kronwall’s game winner in the 2nd period.
Pittsburgh pressed hard in the 3rd period, however 2 costly penalties for the visitors putting them down to 3 men on the ice in the last minute of play was too costly, finally handing Detroit a win.

4th April, Detroit @ Pittsburgh
Detroit fight gallantly however a 4 goal burst from Pittsburgh in the 2nd period all but kills the opportunity to win. The final result Detroit lose 5-4.
The Red Wings held a 3-1 lead early in the 2nd period, however Pittsburgh were able to miraculously score 4 goals within 2 minutes, with 3 of the goals in the space of 16 seconds (yes that’s right, 3 goals in 16 seconds.... kookiest simulation I have ever seen).
Hagelin scored with 13:33 remaining
Letang scored with 12:02 remaining (1:31)
Maatta scored with 11:50 remaining (0:12)
Rust scored with 11:47 remaining (0:04!)
Anthony Mantha scored the Red Wings 4th goal in the 3rd period & Jimmy Howard held the Penguins scoreless in the 3rd, but luck it seems was just not there for the visitors.
The Red Wings have one more game left in the 2018/19 season which, is at home against the Buffalo Sabres in 2 days time.

Playoffs Race News….
3 Metropolitan teams vie for remaining playoffs spot
Rangers, Devils & Hurricanes have chance in tonight's games.
6th April, 2019
The top 8 in the Western Conference is all locked in as of a couple of days ago, with Nashville’s taking the last Wild Card spot, after their meteoric climb up the ladder.
However, in the Eastern Conference, tonight is do or die for the New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils & the Carolina Hurricances.
New York currently hold a 1 point lead (89pts) over New Jersey (88) & Carolina (88). If they win their game against Pittsburgh, they are automatically through. Should they lose, they must rely on both teams losing their games.
Reliant on New York losing, if New Jersey win against Florida, they qualify automatically. Carolina are behind New Jersey on overall wins. They can only qualify if they win their game against Philadelphia & both New York & New Jersey must lose their games.
With both Wild Card places being won over by Toronto (94pts) & Buffalo (91pts) in the Atlantic division, these 3 games are crucial for each team, with no 2nd chances available.
We’ll all be watching closely.
The Current Metropolitan Division Ladder – as of this morning April 6th
The Red Wings Season has finished on a great note, with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
The visitors really struggled to get an offence going, only putting 13 shots on net, which Jimmy Howard was able to shut down, earning him the 3rd star of the game.
The 1st period remained scoreless however it was Detroit’s defensemen who found a way to put the puck in the net, with Mike Green slotting one past Carter Hutton & not long after, Rookie Joe Hicketts launched a wrist shot that whistled past Hutton again. This was Hicketts 1st career Goal in the NHL, the crowd were ecstatic & nearly lifted the roof off Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings maintained control most of the game & finally in the 3rd period, Gustav Nyquist scored a scrappy goal in traffic in front of the net to give the Red Wings their 3rd & final goal for the game & for the season.
Tonight’s win certainly helps the Detroit faithful put their mind at rest a little as the off-season now begins.
That’s all for season 2018/19, we hope you enjoyed the coverage. Playoffs begin in a few days time, be watching here on NBCSN. Goodnight.

Playoffs Race News….
A good finish to the season with the Red Wings winning their last 2 home games of the season.
Even though it has been challenging, it certainly has been entertaining & interesting. Next season should see the further maturing of young stars like forwards Filip Zadina, Evgeny Svechnikov, Michael Rassmussen & possibly Joe Veleno. As well as young D-men, Filip Hronek & Joe Hicketts.
Now that my 1st season at the helm is out of the way, we can start really looking at & working on our strengths (far too few) & our weaknesses.
The big drive I feel will be to look for at least one more veteran D-man in free agency, possibly 2 if Kronwall retires. In the forward lines, I will more focused on giving younger skaters yet more ice time to develop. I also believe we have an oversupply of 3rd – 4th line wingmen that we will look at perhaps making a change or 2 to balance out.
Much to look forward to in the 2019 Player Draft due to us finishing 5th last in the League standings, meaning we have a good shot with at least a top 7 pick.
With our 1st pick, it is with hope we can either pick up ideally an elite defenseman or as a secondary preference, a left winger or centerman. I believe one or the other should hopefully fall into our laps.

Grand Rapids Griffins Update
Feature Game:
13th April, 2019
Grand Rapids @ Milwaukee Admirals
We join Grand Rapids on the last game of the regular season. Just like their NHL affiliate, there will be no playoffs for 2019.
Projected Lines:
GAME RESULT & RECAP- See Pictures Inside
Spoiler13th April, Grand Rapids @ Milwaukee
The Griffins lose a nail biter, 2-1 in overtime to the Milwaukee Admirals.
The last game of the season was just not meant to be for the visitors, however it was a very entertaining game to say the least.
Each team’s goalies had a busy night & both were in excellent form. Griffins goalie Kaden Fulcher making 30 saves & former Red Wings / Griffins product, Tom McCollum of Milwaukee making 33 saves, which earned him the 1st star of the game.
Griffins center, Carter Camper scored in the 1st period to put the Visitors in front briefly, however a goal from Zac Rinaldo 4 minutes later tied the game at 1-1
The rest of regulation time would go without further score and it was not until 29 seconds remaining in overtime, that Admiral’s forward, Rocco Grimaldi, netted a relatively easy one with Kaden Fulcher camped way too far out of his net.

End of Season Wrap up:
The Griffins season almost recovered after a very average start. Goalie Harri Sateri returned from his Red Wings duties, sparking a notable comeback with the Griffins as they surged into the Central division's top 4 by the end of February. Unfortunately Sateri then broke his ankle, ending his season and ending the Griffins run of good fortune.
Overall, a disappointing finish for a team that won the Calder Cup only 2 seasons ago.
The Objective for next season will be simple - find a solid 2nd & 3rd Goalie option to back up Harri Sateri. Kaden Fulcher & Patrick Rybar just do not meet the standard required in the AHL.
Matt Puempel & Chris Terry both had a solid season sitting on each wing of the 1st line. It is with a little regret that I did not play Puempel with the Red Wings however we will see what his chances look like next season.
No doubt there will other movement amongst the team, however the rest should be manageable.

Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings
& the Winners Are…
2019 NHL Draft Lottery Result:
Spoiler
Not a Great Result For Detroit
All I can say is ….OUCH! The Red Wings have dropped 3 spots down the draft from 5th to 8th. Luckily this years draft is deep enough to possiblly yield a potential elite player from that position, however it certainly does mean the players I originally had in mind will be gone & it is likely we will pick purely on potential alone.
The 3 teams that took out the top 3 picks all finished well above the bottom 5 teams in the standings, in fact they were all teams that were nearly in line for making playoffs. Kind of crazy.... Hope this isn’t going to be a continuing trend….
Buffalo, are major winners in this draft. They acquired Los Angeles 1st round pick through a trade and the lottery has bumped them up 6 spots from 7th to 1st!
Philadelphia Climbed 8 spots to 2nd
Colorado are also major winners rising 10 spots in the draft to 3rd.
Edmonton had the worst record in the league, they dropped 3 spots to 4th.
Calgary had the 2nd worst record & they dropped 3 spots to 5th.
And of course as above, Detroit dropped 3 spots to 8th.
