The Result:
The Red Wings 1st Draft under Steve Yzmeran was mixed with both poor & good fortune. Time will tell if this year’s class were full of gems or busts.

Trade News:
Trade News: Red Wings Trade Abdelkader & Saarijarvi to Hurricanes for De Haan
Wings trade veteran wingman to improve defense.
23rd June, 2019
Detroit’s 1st trade of the 2019 Player draft did not include picks, instead today’s trade, during the 2nd round, sees a career Red Wing head for Raleigh, North Carolina.
The details of the trade are as follows:
Detroit receives Defenseman Calvin de Haan from Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Left Wing Justin Abdelkader & Defenseman Villi Saarijarvi.
Abdelkader, 33 was drafted by Detroit in 2005 at pick #42 in the 2nd round. He played 10 full season with the Red Wings, eventually becoming an Alternate captain in 2016 on the departure of Pavel Datsyuk.
22 year old, Finnish Defenseman, Villi Saarijarvi , has spent the last 2 seasons with Detroit's AHL Affiliate Grand Rapids.
Calvin de Haan, 28, was drafted at pick #12 in the 2009 Draft by the New York Islanders, where he played 5 seasons, before being traded to the Hurricanes last year.
“No doubt we we’re here to strengthen our position in the draft & in the years to follow. We saw that the 'Canes had de Haan on the trade block, of which we really do need some experience in the defensive zone. It was hard giving up Abby, he was part of our leadership group, however we believe we made the right choice given the surplus of 3rd & 4th line wingmen we have.” Said Steve Yzerman during todays draft.
Yzerman later made one more trade during the Draft, trading picks 123 (4th round) & 143 (5th round) to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Pick 109 (4th round), in order to select 18 year old, Left Wing prospect, Anthony Gilroy.
All the trades on Draft Day:
Only 3 trades made, Detroit involved in 2.
Pick #1 – Buffalo Sabres (2nd no.1 pick in 2 seasons)
Pick #2 – Philadelphia Flyers
Pick #3 – Colorado Avalanche
Pick #4– Edmonton Oilers
Pick #5 – Calgary Flames
Detroit's 1st pick - Kirby Dach
NHL Draft Wrap Up:
This was my very 1st attempt with the new scouting system. Whilst I really liked the changes that NHL 19 brings, as you can see here, there are big holes in the players profiles that I failed to scout such as play style, skills & potential. Additionally, with Fog of War option on, they all have ??? as their overall ratings that carry into the next season. I am guessing I will learn these skills & attributes as the season goes on(?) Nevertheless this was certainly a learning year for me, so hopefully I might get better as the seasons roll on.
Player Selection:
Overall generally satisfied, however a lot of the player’s potential is quite unknown.
Kirby Dach was definitely not my 1st choice however he was the last Elite potential (hopefully, only 3bars) available in the top 10 @ pick no.8. And I have a feeling that his play style isn’t a Grinder, which I should get to learn during the pre-season. Dach will get an entry contract immediately, though I would say he will finish his time in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades, then go through the AHL system. Detroit do not have a true 1st line Center so it is exciting to have someone to potentially fill that void, eventually.
Other players I am excited to see how they turn out, are the 2 defensemen picked in the 2nd round, Brandon Mestre & Victor Hadfield, also the goalie we selected in the same round, Viktor Chistov, though the potential of all of those guys could change substantially. Then perhaps what might become the gem of draft is our pick 191, Center Nikita Zikov who is a confirmed low elite.
Time for free agency, ideally I need a 1st/2nd line left winger & another experienced top4 defenseman – so let’s see how we go.Last edited by SeattleBattleCat; 11-11-2018, 09:53 PM.Comment

Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings
(Re-Sign Phase)
25TH June – 30th June 2019,
Players Released:
LW Jussi Jokinen 77ovr
RW Luke Witkowski 76ovr
D Adam Almqvist 66ovr
G Patrik Rybar 25 57ovr
C Zach Gallant 59ovr - Unsigned Rookie
C Brady Gilmore 58ovr - Unsigned Rookie
D Malte Setkov 20yrs 59ovr - Unsigned Rookie
D Reilly Webb 20yrs 59ovr - Unsigned Rookie
D Cole Fraser 19yrs 58ovr - Unsigned Rookie
For Jokinen, this was strictly a 1 year deal, if he were to remain in the Red Wings organisation, he’d be in the AHL at best. Our younger skaters need more ice time.
Luke Witkowski surprisingly did not want to re-sign, he was quite usable in defense for most of last season. He may have been another player with further limited ice time to make way for younger skaters. Probably best he moved on.
Players Re-signed:
D Niklas Kronwall 38yrs (81ovr Exact Top6D) – 1way contract - 1yr @ $4.5M per yr
D Nick Jensen 28yrs (78ovr Exact 7thD) – 1way contract - 2yrs @ $1.350M per yr
G Harri Sateri 29yrs (77ovr Exact Backup) – 1way contract - 2yrs @ $1.7M
D Dylan McIlrath 27yrs (74ovr Exact 7thD) - 2way contract - 2yrs @ $0.875M per yr
With a number of 2way contracts sorted prior to the season end, plus a few guys released, we only had 4 contracts that needed attention prior to Free Agency opening. We signed Kronwall for one more year. He wanted 2 years but given his age, I am only prepared to work on a year-to-year basis.
RFA - Qualified Tenders:
We have qualified tenders for the following Restricted Agents. All are yet to re-sign with the team.
LW Evgeny Svechnikov 22yrs (76ovr Med Top6F) - RFA
C Dominic Turgeon 23 yrs (75ovr Med Top9F) - RFA
D - Christopher Bigras 24yrs (74ovr Med Top6D) - RFA
LW - Kalle Kossila 26yrs (74ovr Med Top6F) - RFA
D - Joe Hicketts 23yrs (73ovr Med Top6D) - RFA
LW Dylan Sadowy 23yrs (63ovr Med Bottom6F) - RFA
Entry Level Contracts Signed:
C Kirby Dach - 18yrs (???ovr 75%Med Elite) - Signed Entry level contract - 3yrs @ $0.925M
D Jared McIsaac - 19yrs (71ovr Med Top4D) - Signed Entry level contract - 3yrs @ $0.925M
RW Lane Zablocki - 20yrs (63ovr Med Top9F) - Signed Entry level contract - 3yrs @ $0.925M
This years 8th pick, Kirby Dach is signed, I will wait & see what ratings that come through for a couple of the other selections, from this years draft, however the season will have likely begun by then.
We handed an entry level contract to Defenseman, Jared McIsaac, a 2nd Round pick from 2018, who has developed well last season in Canada. He should get a lot of ice time with the Griffins if he doesn’t go back to the CHL.

Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings
Top Free Agents available in 2019:
Skaters:
Artemi Panarin, Jeff Skinner & Jordan Eberle head the list of available players.
Goalies:
Detroit Red Wings – Free Agency Period Highlights
FA Signings & News Releases from 1st July – 31st August:
1st July
Detroit Signs C Stelio Mattheos (???ovr ???pot) to Entry Level Contract - 3 years @ $0.875M per yr
Taking a wild stab in the dark with this one.. Probably just a 3rd/4th line forward at very best. The roster has space, let’s give this guy a shot.
5th July –
Detroit Signs RW Garnet Hathaway 27yrs (78ovr Exact Bottom6F) to 2way contract - 2yrs @ $0.875M per yr
Detroit Signs C Tanner Fritz (75ovr Exact AHL Top6F) to 2way contract - 2 years @ $0.875M per yr
Detroit Signs G Marek Mazanek 28yrs (75ovr Med Back up) to 2way contract - 2 years @ $0.975M per yr
Detroit Signs RW Zac Rinaldo (76ovr AHLTop6F) to 2way contract - 1 year @ $0.750M
Picked up a number of new 2 way contracted players including Marek Mazanek who will be able to help out Sateri in net at the Griffins.
8th July –
Detroit Signs D Alexander Edler 33yrs (82ovr Exact Top4D) - 2 years @ $4.9M per year.
- I like what Edler will be able to bring to the defensive zone on this team. His addition provides a little more stability to what is still a very average D-core comparative to other teams rosters.
Detroit Signs LW Jeff Skinner 27yrs (84ovr Exact Elite) to 2yrs @ $8M per year
- Skinner rejected 2 previous offers from us. However with a final offer of $8M per year we got the player we wanted. Skinner had requested 3years, however given we are offering such a lucrative contract, we counter-offered with 2 years only. I believe it’s a good deal for both parties. Jeff makes nearly the same amount in 2 years as opposed to what he would have got elsewhere for 3 years & we get a solid Left Wing for at least 2 seasons to help in our teams rebuild efforts.
Detroit accepts offer to Trade D Nick Jensen 28yrs (78ovr Exact 7thD) to New Jersey for NJD 2020 Round 4 Draft Pick.
New Jersey put the above offer on the table & we accepted. Not a bad deal for a player who’s playing time would be more limited here this season.
28th July - Svechnikov Offer Matched:
Ottawa tendered an offer sheet to RFA Evgeny Svechnikov. Their offer is a 1way contract @ $1.125M for 1 year. Detroit Matches offer & Svechnikov is officially re-signed.
- Svechnikov is one of the young players that we are building our plans around moving forward. Signing him to a 1 way contract at only $1.125M for 1 year is well worth it.
31st July - RFA Signing
Detroit Signs RFA – LW Kalle Kossila 24yrs (74ovr Med Top6F) to 1 year 2way contract @ $0.770M
- Kossila was the last RFA holding out on signing. He is officially locked in.
Trades Around the League During Free Agency:
These are the trades made around the NHL during the Free Agency Period (1st July - 31st August):
Detroit signs 3 New Scouts to Organisation:
At the end of Re-sign week, I didn't realise that 3 of my scouts contracts had expired. I have dedicated more of the overall budget and hired the following scouts
Notable Signings Around the League:
LW Antemi Panarin – Signed with Calgary – 7yrs @ $7M
LW Jeff Skinner – Signed with Detroit – 2yrs @$8M
RW Jordan Eberle – Signed with Arizona -1yr @ $5.89M
D Zdeno Chara – Signed with Chicago – 3yrs @ $4.970M (42yrs old!)
D Andrej Sustr – Signed with Dallas – 2yrs @ $4.485M
LW Jussi Jokinen – Signed with Columbus – 1yr @ $0.735M
D Christtian Djoos acquired by Carolina by offer sheet from Washington – 1yr @ $1.210M
Wrap up:
Not a bad Free Agency period for the Red Wings - and we had our players locked in with a month to spare.
I don’t expect the signings of Skinner & Edler to make too much impact, however they are important pieces for this hockey team to remain competitive over the next couple of seasons. Should it not work out, they are at the very least, great trade bait.
Even with the inflated contract we gave Skinner, our salary cap is sitting on $74.392 with the ceiling this year set at $85.715.
During the year, the big task will be locking down Anthony Mantha, whose contract expires at the end of this season. Currently he is set on not wanting an extension, however perhaps a nice meaty short term contract will change his mind. We can not let a player of his quality go right now.

Re: The Captain Returns - NHL19 - Detroit Red Wings
Tryouts & Training Camp Begins Today.
Roster spots up for grabs
13th September, 2019
Today is the 1st day of training camp for the Detroit Red Wings. For some, it is an opportunity to reacquaint themselves with the ice & their linemates, for others it’s a chance to form chemistry with new teammates. Most importantly, it is a chance for many skaters to prove themselves worthy for a roster spot for game 1 of the season.
One such player who is raring to go is Detroit’s no.9 pick in the 2016 draft, Michael Rasmussen. The young Center had a career best year in the WHL and is eager to jump straight into the Red Wings roster rather than go through the AHL. If he succeeds, he will be the 3rd Red Wings player (along with Larkin & Zadina) in recent years to go straight from Junior or College Hockey into the NHL.
“I hope I can bring my best game with me over this pre-season. If I make the team, I’ll be ecstatic. If it doesn’t turn out, then I’ll work extra hard in the AHL to make it as soon as possible.” Said Rasmussen last night.
This year’s no.8 draft pick, Kirby Dach is also excited to show what he’s got.
“I’m living a dream right now, I hope I can get used to the pace of an NHL game and the less space to make my plays. If I can do that, then I’ll have a good shot.” Said Dach during a radio interview last night.
Coach Jeff Blashill was supportive of his young charges but was very guarded in his response during his interview yesterday.
“Myself and my coaching team are really excited to watch these young guys get on the ice and show us what they can do.”
“Maybe 1 or 2 guys on this list are ready, but some will have to come out of this camp, go back home & listen to what we have to tell them to help them become the successful hockey players they want to be. If this year’s not to be, don’t get disgruntled, we want you to use that to work harder for later in the season or next year.”
This year’s training camp will be a huge opportunity for some of Detroit’s latest Free Agent recruits to mesh with their new teammates. Forward, Jeff Skinner & D-Men, Alex Edler & Calvin de Haan will be getting used to a new locker room.
Jeff Skinner seemed philosophical in his approach,
“I’ve been getting bumped around a bit over the last couple of seasons, so getting used to a new locker room doesn’t seem so intimidating any more, but I am really happy to be here and looking forward to skating with these guys, to get to know them & win some games.”
Camp begins with skating & skills testing, plus some inter club games, culminating in the pre-season.
Detroit’s Pre-season opener is at home at Little Caesars Arena, on the 16th September, where they will take on the Florida Panthers.

Game Results, News & Team Updates::
16th September, Florida @ Detroit
Hockey is back & the Red Wings chalk up a pre-season win, 4-2 over the Florida Panthers.
Tonight was a big chance for newly recruited players such as Jeff Skinner, Calvin de Haan & Alex Edler to gel with new teammates & a chance for rookies such as Kirby Dach & Michael Rassmussen to impress coaches for a roster spot on the team.
It was training camp invitee & new recruit, Garnet Hathaway, who would open the scoring for the Red Wings, finding the puck off a rebound & pushing it into the net past Luongo.
The game would go scoreless until the last period, when a flood of goals came, particularly in the last minute.Jeff Skinner scored his 1st goal as a Red Wing, whilst on the breakaway with 0:53 remaining. Florida’s Denis Malgin then scored with 0:23 remaining, finally followed by a Filip Zadina Goal on an empty net with 0:06 remaining.
Wings Net minder Harri Sateri gets the 1st star for a great tending effort, making 25 saves for the win.

18th September, Detroit @ Boston
Detroit prevails 2-0 in a scrappy low shot count game. Young Centermen Michael Rasmussen, Kirby Dachs, Joe Veleno & Stelio Mattheo had the Center ice for the Red Wings and they all controlled the game well.
Rasmussen is particularly showing great pace and his physical presence has been felt by the opposition, with a number of hard checks being handed to Boston players.
The game remained scoreless until 22 seconds into the 3rd period when Mantha unleashed a sizzling slap shot, that beat Boston’s Jaroslav Halak over the shoulder, to give the Wings a 1-0 lead.
Only a couple of minutes play later, Filip Hronek Scored to give the Wings the 2-0 lead.
Newly recruited net minder, Marek Mazanec earned a shutout. Even though Boston’s shot count was low, Mazanec faced a number of tough shots to hold them scoreless.
Filip Zadina left the game in the 2nd period hurt, after being on the wrong end of a big check from Brad Marchand. Zadina did not return for the remainder of the game however it is believed the young wingman is fine & without injury.
With such a good showing from the players who are trying out for a full time roster spot, selectors are going to have a hard time making the final cuts.
Players Released From Tryout:
C Stelio Mattheos - assigned to Grand Rapids (ok, so he’s a bust)

21st September, Toronto @ Detroit
Despite scoring the 1st 2 goals of the game, the Red Wings go down 4-2 to the Maple Leafs at home.
The game got off to the right start for Detroit, as Filip Zadina deflected a Joe Hicketts slap shot to score the 1st goal of the game. Not long after, Alex Edler slotted one from near the blue line to put the Red Wings up 2-0.
However Toronto began to claw their way back, with Jordan Weal slotting the 1st of 2 goals past Harri Sateri, just before the 1st intermission. Weal then slotted his 2nd goal within the 1st couple of minutes of the 2nd period.
Leafs star recruit, Jonathan Tavares, scored in the 3rd period, which gave the Leafs a 3-2 lead. This was almost the end result, until Tavares scored once more into an empty net, with 2.1 seconds remaining.
Overall not a bad game for the young Red Wings side, against a Leafs team which boasted most of its regular roster.
Detroit now have to brush off this loss and will play a double header in 2 days time, starting with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

23rd September, Detroit @ Tampa Bay
A shocking own goal just seconds into overtime has thwarted an epic Detroit comeback in tonight’s 5-4 drama packed loss.
With a 4 on 3 power play in progress in Detroit’s favour, Dennis Cholowski passed the puck back to Harri Sateri who let the puck slip between his pads and into the net to give Tampa Bay the victory.
Earlier on during the 1st & 2nd periods, Tampa Bay had gotten themselves ahead 4-0 with goals from Stamkos, Kucherov, Palat & McDonagh. Detroit pulled a struggling Mazanek from the net, Replacing him with Harri Sateri. With the game looking all but cooked, Jeff Skinner Scored a goal for the Wings just prior to 2nd intermission to make the score 4-1 in the Lightning’s favour.
Through the 3rd Jeff Skinner produced some amazing shots and scored twice more to get his 1st hat-trick for his new team & reducing the gap to 4-3.
However Tampa looked to be back in control until they made 2 penalties within the last 2 minutes of regulation time. With Detroit in control of a 5 on 3 power play, veteran defender Alex Edler pierced Tampa’s defence, finding the net with only 27.2 seconds remaining to tie it up, sending the game to overtime.
Of course from there Detroit would go into score on their own net, to give Tampa a big scare, but ultimately gave them the win.
(Honestly I don’t know why the AI can not handle a slow puck heading for the Goalie from a miss pass.... straight through his legs... ugh! Not the 1st time & killed an exciting game. My own fault lol)

24th February, Detroit @ Buffalo
An empty net goal with 8 seconds remaining seals the deal, giving the Detroit Red Wings a hard fought 2-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
It was a physical game with tensions boiling over to a scrap between Jonathan Ericsson & Zac Bogosian. This the 3rd game in a row for the Wings with a fight. Someone needs to tell these guys it’s the pre-season!
Jeff Skinner scored in his 2nd consecutive game, giving the Red Wings a 1-0 lead & ultimately the win, as the Sabres failed to find the net at all.
Johnathan Bernier was huge in net for his 1st game of the pre-season, making 27 saves on his way to the shutout. Sabres Goalie, Carter Hutton was also very impressive making 28 saves.

The Red Wings came to play and walk away from tonight’s game as 6-2 winners over the Canadiens at home.
In what could be a revelation, the newly formed 3rd line of Rasmussen, Zadina & Svechnikov, was lethal tonight, accounting for 4 of the 6 Wings’ goals scored.
Michael Rasmussen who has had a solid pre-season to date was finally rewarded with 2 goals, as was fellow linemate, Filip Zadina.
Alex Edler’s great pre-season continues with the veteran defenseman tallying 3 assists in tonight’s big win.
For the Canadiens, Carey Price was the man with a hole in his glove, letting through 4 of 10 shots faced before Canadiens coaching staff finally made the call to swap him out for McNiven.
The Red Wings have one more game left this pre-season, which is against Ottawa back here in Detroit, in 2 days time.

29th September, Ottawa @ Detroit
Despite a great rally, Detroit fall short at home 6-4 to the Ottawa Senators in the last Pre-season game.
Ottawa blew out to a 4-1 lead, causing coach Blashill to bench beleaguered net minder Jimmy Howard for Johnathan Bernier. With this change the game’s momentum began to shift in the Red Wings favour, with Jeff Skinner scoring, then followed with goals from Rasmussen & de Haan which levelled the scores at 4-4 early in the 3rd period.
The game remained close until Wings rookie Dennis Cholowski tripped Silfverberg in front of net, resulting in a shootout penalty & subsequently leading to a goal, to edge the Senators in front 5-4.
Within the final minutes, the Red Wings pulled Bernier & put an extra skater on the ice, however the Sens were able to break free and a goal from Nelson with 22 seconds remaining, sealed the game shut.
Overall an impressive showing from the Red Wings this pre-season. Let’s see how they kick off on 3rd October at home against the Buffalo Sabres.

Wrap up:
Overall I am impressed with how the team went in pre-season, however these games can never be taken as an accurate reading as to how the actual season will pan out.
In defense Alex Edler & Calvin de Haan gelled well together, they will likely play together as a 1st or 2nd pairing combination along with Kronwall & Green. Edler was even more of a stand out, scoring 10 Points in only 6 games played.
Jeff Skinner was impressive in his series, scoring 6 goals in 6 games, which included a hat-trick. It is with a lot of hope, that he is going to be a good fit on the team. Skinner will likely line up with Larkin & Mantha on the 1st line.
Having another shot at making the team was Centerman Michael Rasmussen. This young man has some incredible speed on the ice. The towering 6’7” Power Forward was really fun to control due to his speed. He was able to get in front of many opposition skaters whilst chasing down the puck or defending.
It was the 6th game of the pre-season when the 3rd line combination of Rasmussen, Zadina & Svechnikov came together & they just seemed so well matched, I believe these guys will spend a lot of time on the same line this season.
Our pick number 8 in this year’s draft, Kirby Dach, I am pleased to say is a confirmed Medium Elite Potential player & has come straight into training camp rated at 74, which is fantastic!
Honestly we could have kept him in the Red Wings side, but I feel an extra year in the WHL should further enhance his development, instead of potentially warming the bench as a scratch here in Detroit. His pace is a little bit of a concern, however I am hoping he works on that during this season & comes back to camp next year with a little extra something. This franchise really does need him.
Kirby Dach – Sent down for this season, but we will see him real soon:

Mantha Named Wings Alternate Captain
Detroit looks to their younger skaters to lead from the front, but will Mantha stay beyond this season?
2nd October 2019
With the puck set to drop at Little Caesars Arena less than 24hours away against the Buffalo Sabres to kick off season 2019/20, the Red Wings have named key player & power forward, Anthony Mantha as an alternate captain. Mantha is joined in the leadership group by team Captain, Niklas Kronwall, as well as fellow alternate captain & fellow linemate Dylan Larkin.
Mantha played with the “A” on his jersey throughout pre-season & it appears the team, the coaches & Steve Yzerman was happy with his abilities to lead the way on and off the ice.
“I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to help and guide my teammates on the ice, but where I think I do best as a leader on this team is off the ice. I try to be that mentor to the younger guys that are on the roster. I’ve only just taken this trip myself & I know how challenging it is, so I spend a lot of time with Zads, Razzy, Cholo & Hronek. I hope that it makes a difference for these guys.” Said Mantha.
“Not only this, I stay in touch with some of the boys at Grand Rapids to give them support & advice on what it takes to make the jump to the NHL.”
Mantha’s contract expires at the end of this season, and is yet to sign an extension. It is believed discussions with Mantha’s agent have commenced, however there has been little to no commitment just yet from Mantha that would suggest whether he will play on with the Red Wings or look elsewhere.
“Right now my focus is tomorrow night and moving on with the rest of the season.” Mantha said.
Although non-committal, Mantha’s comments clearly indicate, that the future at Detroit is currently in the air.
Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman had the following to say: “Obviously we want to sign him, he could be a career player here if he wants to be. We are in talks with Moe & his agent - hopefully there will be a result that sees both parties happy. I’m not losing sleep over this right now, I don’t think any should or will be. We will find out soon no doubt.”
The puck is set to drop in tomorrow night's game at Little Caesars Arena at 7pm. Full coverage on NBCSN.
Opening night was finally here & the Red Wings get their 2019/20 season off to the right start with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
It only took 2:24 of game time before Filip Zadina scored the 1st goal of the Red Wings season, executed by a mean wrist shot, beating Carter Hutton gloveside. Within the next 2 minutes of play, Gustav Nyquist added to the Red Wings tally by deflecting the puck into the net. This was Nyquist’s 300th career goal, which turned Little Caesars into a melting pot of cheers, with the crowd letting their appreciation of the veteran forward’s time with the Wings be known.
Only minutes into the 2nd period, Sabres forward, Conor Sheary, got the visitors back to within one with his first goal for the season. The Sabres good run only lasted a moment, thanks to an offensive bumble by Rasmus Dahlin, that saw Wings D-man Jonathan Ericsson breakaway with the puck & laser a pass to Martin Frk who then scored on a wonderful 2 on 1 play.
It appeared luck was not with Buffalo, though at the other end, it was all going right for Detroit, as Dylan Larkin deflected a Jeff Skinner shot on to get the Wings 4th goal of the game and ultimately the victory.
Jonathan Bernier had a great effort in net, making 23 saves on his way to being awarded the 1st star of the game.
Tonight was the 1st of a 4 game home stand to begin the season.
We’ll be back here in 2 nights when the Red Wings take on the Philadelphia Flyers.
3 Stars of the Game:
Game Pics:
5th October, Philadelphia @ Detroit
Detroit take a commanding 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in tonight’s home game at Little Caesars Arena.
In a busy 1st period, Detroit tallied 3 goals to Philly’s 2, with scores from Nyquist, Larkin & Zadina.
After a scoreless 2nd period, Detroit managed to find the back of the net twice more on hapless Flyers Goalie, Alex Stalock, with goals from Mantha & Matt Puempel.
Anthony Mantha finished a solid game tonight with 1 goal & 2 assists, whilst Darren Helm finished with 2 assists.
Bernier, for the 2nd game in a row was impressive, making 35 saves.
3 Stars of the Game:
7th October, Los Angeles @ Detroit
The Red Wings are dealt their 1st loss of the season, going down 3-1 to the LA Kings.
Kings veteran Ilya Kovalchuk scored mid-way through the 1st period. The game would then go scoreless until 42 seconds into the 3rd period, with Dylan Larkin tallying a goal to tie the game at 1-1. Mid-way through the 3rd period, Evgeni Svechnikov was given a 5 minute major penalty for embowing Kings defenseman, Alec Martinez, giving the visitors a long 4 on 5 power play, ulitimately leading to 2 goals to give the Kings the win.
Kings Goalie, Johnathan Quick was nearly perfect all game, making 27 saves & earning the 1st star of the game.
3 Stars of the Game:
10th October, Dallas @ Detroit
Detroit give Dallas a Hockey lesson tonight with a 4-1 victory at Little Caesars Arena.
Dallas were capped to 20 shots on net all game compared to Detroit’s blistering 39.
Jeff Skinner netted his 1st goal for the Season whilst Athanasiou, Nyquist & Mantha tallied the other majors for the Wings.
Tonight’s game was the first start in net for Jimmy Howard made 19 saves in the win.
With a successful 4 game home stand (3-1-0) in the books, the Red Wings now hit the road for 5 games, with the 1st opponent being the Calgary Flames in 2 night’s time.
3 Stars of the Game:
12th October, Detroit @ Calgary
Despite a great start, the Red Wings lose tonight’s game 3-2 in overtime.
Detroit takes away a point, however surely this has to be seen as game that went begging, after Detroit got off to an early 2 goal lead in the 1st period, thanks to Jeff Skinner scoring both goals in the space of 1:39.
The Flames slowly regained the momentum and by the end of the 2nd period, the scores were tied, with goals coming from Jonny Gaudreau and Mikael Backlund.
4 minutes & 15 seconds would disappear in overtime until Travis Hamonic scored with a wrist shot near the blue line to give the home team the win.
Both goalies in tonight’s game, Jimmy Howard & Eddie Lock, faced 34 shots with the latter keeping Detroit scoreless in OT to seal the win.
3 Stars of the Game:
15th October, Detroit @ Los Angeles
LA hand Detroit a 2-1 loss in tonight’s fixture at the Staples Center.
The Kings scored both goals in the 2nd period from Iafallo & Pearson. It almost looked as if Kings Goalie, Johnathan Quick hold the Red Wings scoreless until Evgeny Svechnikov flicked a rebounded puck into the net with 13:39 remaining in the 3rd period.
Although the Wings pressed hard to try to tie the game, the Kings were able to hold the visitors to take the win.
3 Stars of the Game:
17th October, Detroit @ Vancouver
The Red Wings score 4 goals straight, including 3 in the 3rd period, to snatch a 4-3 win from a struggling Vancouver Canucks.
Vancouver went into tonight’s game having only 1 win so far this season, however the home team came out firing, scoring 3 1st period goals to put them in a very commanding position.
The Red Wings regrouped in the 2nd period, playing with much better structure & with 7:10 remaining in that period, Gustav Nyquist scored to reduce the gap to 3-1.
The last period then belonged to Jeff Skinner & Nyquist, with Skinner scoring 2 goals in quick succession to tie the game at 3-3 & Nyquist scoring with 7:00 remaining to put the Wings in front for the 1st time. The Red Wings held on for a hard fought win which certainly would have raised the mood in the locker room. The Wings road trip continues, when they take on the Sharks on the 19th.
3 Stars of the Game:
19th October, Detroit @ San Jose
The Red Wings do their best to contain one of the best teams in the league, however they fall short, losing 3-1 to the Sharks.
Thanks to quick fire goals from Jeremy Roy & Thomas Hertl, the Sharks we’re out to a 2-0 lead early in the 1st period, which looked to be an ominous sign for the visitors.
However Anthony Mantha steadied the ship for the Red Wings, scoring with 1:14 remaining in the 1st period to take the scores to 2-1.
The rest of the game would go without further score until the dying seconds when the Sharks were able to score on the empty net, making the end result certain. After a tough start, Jimmy Howard recovered & played exceptionally well, finishing the night with 31 saves.
Detroit now have a record of 4-3-1, tomorrow night they will take on the Coyotes at Arizona Arena.
3 Stars of the Game:
20th October, Detroit @ Arizona
On the last of a 5-straight away game run, the Red Wings dominate a struggling Arizona Coyotes outfit with a 4-1 victory.
In his 9th game, Michael Rasmussen finally found the back of the net, for the 1st goal of his NHL career. The young centerman found himself on a breakaway & scored on Antii Raanta.
Bertuzzi, Mantha & Nyquist also scored in the big win. The only Coyote to score was Alex Galchenyuk when the pressure had alsready died out of the game.
The Red Wings win tonight was slightly soured with defenseman, Calvin de Haan leaving the ice in the 3rd with what appears to be a hamstring injury.

Breaking News....
24th October, Ottawa @ Detroit
Ottawa hold on to beat the Red Wings 5-4 at Little Caesars Arena.
The visitors scored the 1st 2 goals of the game, only to be caught up by the Red Wings with goals from Jeff Skinner & Mike Green in the 2nd period. There would not be any further score for the remainder of the period.
Ottawa then seized early control in the 3rd period, with quick fire goals from Matt Duchene & Jean-Gabriel Pageau taking the visiting team out to a 4-2 lead.
Anthony Mantha responded with a goal with 16:31 remaining to reduce the gap to 4-3 & to give the Wings a glimmer of hope. However that glimmer soon turned to despair for the home crowd, as Silfverberg scored for the Sen’s to put the result beyond doubt.
Rookie Michael Rasmussen scored late in the period with his 2nd goal in 2 games, which put the Wings within 1 goal of tying the game, but the gap was too great & the Senators walk away with the points.
3 Red Wings players, Mantha, Green & Rasmussen come away with a goal plus an assist each to their names. Rasmussen’s assist was the 1st of his career.
3 Stars of the Game:
Breaking News....
Detroit are made to look second class tonight going down 6-2 to the Devils at the Prudential Center.
Devils’ Pavel Zacha scored twice to lead the way for the home team, who inflicted 5 goals from 16 shots on Wings’ net minder, Jimmy Howard before he was swapped out for Johnathan Bernier.
Filip Zadina & Mike Green scored for the Red Wings to give the game some positivity for the visitors however they were soundly beaten.
3 Stars of the Game:
29th October, Edmonton @ Detroit
The Red Wings continue to struggle to find the net, going down 3-2 at home against the Oilers.
From what was a promising start to the season, the fortunes are seeming to turn the other way for the Red Wings, with the Oilers being firmly in control of this one.
Howard’s poor form in net continues as 2 Oilers goals from Caggiula & team Captain Connor McDavid in the 1st period, set the tone for the match, forcing the Red Wings to play catch up hockey.
Defenseman Mike Green found the net mid way through the 2nd, as did Gustav Nyquist late in the 3rd period.
3 Stars of the Game:
31st October, Detroit @ Tampa Bay
The Red Wings push the Lightning to the brink but walk away defeated 5-4 in the shootout, thanks to a lone goal from Brayden Point.
After trailing early in the 1st period 2-0 after goals from Hedman & Erne, Detroit rallied with 2 goals of their own from Mantha & Svechnikov, tying the game 2-2 going into the 1st intermission.
The Lightning edged ahead again with D-man Ryan McDonagh scoring, but the lead was short, with Frans Nielsen finally finding the net for the 1st goal of the season & then Gustav Nyquist not long after to put the Red Wings in front.
Detroit almost looked to be in control right up until the end of the 2nd period until Ondrej Palat beat Bernier from the top of the left faceoff circle to tie the game 4-4.
The 3rd period and subsequently overtime both teams went scoreless, forcing the shootout. It took until the 7th shootout round until Point beat Berniers glove to win the game for the Bolts.
It was another game gone begging to Tampa Bay, with the last 2 meetings being extra time thrillers. Both teams will get a day’s breather before playing each other again at Little Caesars arena.

Wrap up:
The first month of hockey is run and done. I have to say, the team is sitting about where I thought they would be. Current losing streak aside, I am pretty happy with the team’s competitiveness. I am also happy with a number of the players performances, especially that of the 1st line of Mantha, Larkin & Skinner. Hopefully this combination will continue to find the back of the net throughout the season. Ability to score is something the team was lacking last season.
Perhaps where the team is really struggling is still on the defensive end and in goal.
Not knocking Edler, de Haan, Green & Kronwall’s efforts however the team needs an Elite or 2 as the top pairing. We have have really good top 4 talent on the horizon in Hronek,Cholowski & possibly McIsaac, however they are not going to be franchise-esque (nice word creation there) players we build a team around.
Our net minders, Howard & Bernier are doing their best, however it pains me to believe that perhaps their best hockey might be behind them. Regardless we will back these guys in 100% for this season.
Viktor Chistov - the next Franchise Goalie?
Big news has come from our scouts in Russia, they have projected Estonian Goalie, Viktor Chistov (currently unsigned & playing in the junior league in Russia.), who was our pick no. 41 in the 2019 draft, to be one of the next big Franchises players to one day play in the NHL.
I hope the young man fills out to his potential, this could be huge for the Red Wings organisation.
Injuries:
20th October - D Calvin de Haan - Strained Hamstring - Missed 2 games
Contract Extensions:
Negotiations underway with Anthony Mantha.
Mantha rejected an initial 7yr $7.4M Extension & has since changed his request to a 1 year extension only.I believe his price will exceed $8M which is sustainable for 1 year. If we elect to increase our offer, it would then be with hope that we could capture him on a longer contract in the following year.
Call Ups/ Assignments:
26th October - D Dennis Cholowski assigned to Grand Rapids
26th October - D Chris Bigras Called up to Detroit
Projected Lines - 2nd November, Tampa Bay @ Detroit
