      8/18/18
Caen, Normandie (AP) - SM Caen opened up the home portion of the 2018-19 campaign with a dominating 1-nil victory over Ligue 1 newcomer FC Sochaux. Luigi Veldmate scored the lone goal of the match as he deflected home a volley from Andy Delort in the 51st minute.

Caen was in control of the match from the start. Emmanuel Imorou made a run into the box in the 4th minute, taking a pass from Kenny Vermeer, but his strike just missed the left post. Jordan Leborgne cracked one just wide of the right post in the 16th minute. Luigi Veldmate wiggled free just inside the 18 yard box in the 19th minute, but keeper Papa Demba Camara just deflected his shot off the right post.

It continued after halftime, as Veldmate sent a long pass that Andy Delort ran onto. He dribbled once then fired a shot past Camara that hit the inside of the far post and bounced back across the goal mouth behind Camara, but stayed out. Just moments later, Kenny Vermeer sent a pass into Delort, who volleyed it towards the far post. Luigi Veldmate ran unmarked to direct the ball into the open net and put Caen up 1-nil.

The win was sweet for Matthaus, picking up his first Ligue 1 win for Caen. "It has been an exciting couple of months (since leaving Gladbach). I am happy to be here and look forward to guiding this squad to places they have never been."

SM Caen (1-1-0, 4 pts) will now travel to Valenciennes (0-0-2), another recently promoted squad, for a match on Friday evening.

        8/24/18
Valenciennes, France (AP) - SM Caen recorded another clean sheet as they escaped Stade du Hainaut with a 1-nil victory over recently promoted Valenciennes FC on Friday evening. Andy Delort was the difference, hammering home a penalty in the 72nd minute to keep Caen undefeated through three matches.

This match was a defensive struggle, with both team valuing possession, and generating very few good scoring chances. The teams went to the half scoreless, with only five combined shots, and no good chances.

Luigi Veldmate had a great chance to help Caen grab the lead, but his shot sailed just over the bar in the 68th minute. Moments later, Kenny Vermeer got pulled down from behind by Angelo Fulgini in the box. Fulgini was sent off, and Andt Delort converted on the penalty to make it 1-nil.

Michael Jordan Nkolo came on as a substitute in the 81st minute and was dominant. He had a couple of great scoring chances, volleying one wide in the 84th minute, and cracking one off the post in added time.

                      9/1/18
Cain, Normandie (AP) - After a surprising (2-1-0) start, SM Caen faltered on Saturday afternoon, as they dropped a 4-1 home decision to FC Lorient. Wissam Ben Yedder scored once, and assisted on two others to lead FC Lorient to the big road win.

This one was a wide open affair in the opening half, with Lorient outshooting Caen 10-6. Wissam Ben Yedder put the visitors on the board in the third minute, heading home a volley from Rafidine Adbullah. Ben Yedder was dominant in the opening half. He was robbed by Remy Vercoutre in the 10th minute, then knocked one over the bar in the 27th minute. He would set up Lorient's second goal, just before the half. With the assistant referee announcing two additional minutes of added time. Ben Yedder sent a long through ball to Abdul Majeed Waris, who beat Vercoutre on the short side, almost five and a half minutes into added time.

Lothar Matthaus was furious. "How does he score three and a half minutes after the half was supposed to end? There were no stoppages. We were robbed."

Jordan Leborgne scored for SM Caen in the 24th minute on a great individual effort. He dribbled into the box, made a couple of subtle moves to create space, then picked out the lower left corner.

Jonathan Beaulieu should have leveled the match in the 51st minute as he split the Lorient defense and was in all alone on Benjamin Lecomte, but his shot sailed over the bar.

Lorient would add a couple of late goals to pad the margin.

Up next for Caen is a trip to Lyon to take on Olympique Lyonnais with an identical (2-1-1) record.

Thanks! I would have preferred to stay with Monchengladbach and in the Bundesliga, but I couldn't see myself taking over another Bundesliga side after getting sacked. Hopefully my tenure at Caen is a bit longer!

Lyon, France (AP) - SM Caen earned a big road point on Sunday evening at Stade de Garland as they drew 1-1 with Olympique Lyonnais. The draw kept Caen in 7th spot, level in points with fifth place Bordeaux.

Andy Delort had a great opportunity to put Caen in front just four minutes in. Jonathan Beaulieu sent a through ball into Delort that left him all alone with Fernando Muslera, but Delort's shot was deflected just over the bar.

Mathieu Valbuena was a force for Lyon. He came close to putting Lyon in front in the ninth minute, but his header sailed just wide. Then in the 32nd minute, Valbuena hooked up with Samuel Umtiti, who found an unmarked Valere Germain in the box. Germain knocked it in off the underside of the crossbar to put Lyonnais up 1-nil.

Valbuena almost made it 2-nil just after halftime, but his volley grazed the far post.

SM Caen would find an equalizer at the hour mark on a very pretty goal. Michael Jordan Nkololo intercepted the ball near midfield and fed it into Jonathan Beaulieu. He sent a through ball into a streaking Herve Bazile, who blasted it into the top left corner.

The draw left Caen at (1-2-0) on the road to start the season. Up next is a home match 19th-place EA Guingamp on Saturday afternoon.

Caen, Normandie (AP) - EA Guingamp went on a scoring spree as they stunned SM Caen 5-2 at Stade Michel d'Ornano on Saturday afternoon. The previously winless EAG had scored just three goals in their first five Ligue 1 matches before Saturday's beatdown.

The fireworks started early in this one. Caen's defense converged on Julien Begue at the top of the box. He slipped the ball to Jimmy Briand who was open in the box and he beat Remy Vercoutre with a right footed shot to make it 1-nil in the 4th minute.

SM Caen would find an equalizer at the half hour mark as Andy Delort passed Kenny Vermeer open at the top of the box and Vermeer slipped it under Mamadou Samassa. It was Vermeer's first goal since arriving from Lothar Matthaus' former club, Borussia Monchengladbach. Vermeer had a chance to put Caen in front in the 43rd minute, but was hauled down from behind in the box, with no call.

The floodgates would open after halftime. Dorian Leveque crossed one into the middle in the 55th minute that Jimmy Briand headed home to make it 2-1 EAG. Eight minutes later, Remy Vercoutre's free kick went straight to Julian Begue at the top of the box. Begue made no mistakes as he blasted it into the top right to make it 3-1. Just moments later, Dorian Leveque crossed another one, and this time Julian Begue volleyed it past Vercoutre to make it 4-1.

The wide open play continued as Jonathan Beaulieu put a shot on frame two minutes later, and Andy Delort hammered home the rebound...but was ruled offside. Four minutes later, Herve Bazile scored on a great individual effort. He dribbled in from midfield, and lunched one into the top left corner in the 71st minute to cut the lead to 4-2.

Newly acquired center back Jereon Osman came forward on a corner kick and hit a solid header that squarely hit the crossbar, but stayed out in the 79th minute.

EA Guingamp would seal it just four minutes later. Yonathan Del Valle sent a cross in, that Rachid Alioui get to the end of and headed past Remy Vercoutre.

The loss leaves Caen at (2-2-2, 8 pts). They have fallen to 11th place in Ligue 1. Up next is a trip south to take on Olympique Marseille (2-2-2) in a mid-week matchup on Wednesday evening.

                                New Signing:

SM Caen have signed a free agent from Brazil. Scout Novem Mvogo found 20-year-old center midfielder Jacsson Antonio Domingues Piazon in Belgium and the club agreed to terms on a four year deal believed to be in the $45k/week range. The 5-10 speedy midfielder should fit in the midfield rotation right away. He is a very good passer, both short and long, and has a pretty powerful shot.

"Everyday we are looking to improve the club," said Lothar Matthaus. "We are committed to bringing a championship to the people of Caen. We feel that this is another step in a process."

Piazon will be available for Wednesday's match at Marseille, but it is unclear if he will see any action since he just arrived at the club.
