Again, though, we're talking about a lot of money for public institutions. I don't think the government should be getting involved in a playoff or the mlb steroid stuff, but I'm okay with this. If it's something that's important to the American people, he should be addressing it.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
It's a moderate amount of money for an athletic department. Louisville's endowment is $762 million, and they'll make a ton of money off of basketball no matter what conference they're in. If he is going to look into it, I would think it would be from a legal or an equity standpoint, as the money from this is still chump change for most universities.Comment

Correct and athletic departments are a branch of public universities. The extra money brought about from a better conference affiliation is spent on infrastructure (which brings jobs) or put back into the Univeristies which again are public institutions that are a part of the community these representatives are there on behalf of.Comment

I think he has a set amount of time to spend on work every day and that if he spends time on realignment he spends less time on other stuff. Considering the fact that these bills are hundreds of pages long, and that to actually address alignment he would need to spend hours talking to different people associated with college football and read dozens of reports, I think that it is meaningful.
So yeah, it could matter quite a bit, depending on how serious he is.
The same goes for the polititians from WV who are getting involved, and it would apply to just about any other state representative from any other state. Sports are huge in the USA, and a state representative who stands up for a local team/school is doing it for political gain more than anything.
This move probably gets him more votes, than anything he's done on any Bill in the senate. It's sad, but it's true.Comment

He is serious about holding onto his senate seat, and going to bat for one of his states biggest Universities is probably better than any re-election add he could buy. He doesn't really care what anyone in any other state thinks about him (unless he one day plans to run for President), because it is only the people of Kentucky that will decide if he stays in the Senate or not.

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
The SEC royally screwed up. Apparently, they had already written an article on their web site about Mizzou joining that was dated October 22nd. They never linked to it, but someone with too much time on their hands finally figured out the correct URL to the story. The SEC Digital Network promptly took it down once it started going viral, but here is the PDF, anyways.

That is why money earned through athletics is so coveted despite the fact that it doesn't seem like much in comparison.Comment

Re: Conference Re-Alignment Thread Part Who Knows
To go a step further, a boost in athletic funds coming in is a boost in unaccounted for funds which means expansion money for the University. Yes it might seem like chump change in comparison to the over all money coming in to the University but most of that big stack is already accounted for.

most of the profits are reinvested in the athletic department, however, some is put back in to the University's general fund.Comment
