While I know it's highly unlikely, wouldn't it be nice if they do something a bit more than an NFL Playgrounds game and it does have the popularity of MyPlayer and that leads to 2k using that money to reboot APF or something authentic, but lacks the NFL license?

I know that's not going to happen, but I can dream.

I would love for 2k to do a APF-esque style of game. The chances of NFL license opening up are slim. Madden has to mess up or loot box/microtransactions restrictions in games are the only ways Madden loses licenses. Madden just has to maintain status quo.

I feel an authentic 2k football without NFL license would do well now mainly off Brand Recognition and AAA Football Alternative. 2k Sports didnt have brand recognition in 2007 that it has now. So since it is 2k and because it's a AAA alternative to Madden, it would do better now.

If it allowed you to recreate the NFL and had an in-depth franchise, it would have the potential to sell much better than 2k8 did and be viable. That said, would the NFL allow 2k to do that and keep giving them the arcade license? They'd be potentially stealing sales away from Madden which hurts the NFL as well.

I would love to see it. I agree that 2k likely won't get a shot at a true NFL game again. I don't really ever see the NFL and EA breaking up the exclusive license in my lifetime. The only way I see it happening is in one of two ways.

        1) 2k approaches the NFL and proposes a deal the NFL can't pass up and that EA refuses to outbid. I hardly see this being a possibility. EA will not let Madden die, and I cannot see 2k getting the go ahead from Take-Two to put in a bid that is even too high for EA to fight.

or 2) This is something I've touched on before, but the NFL basically goes to 2k and tells them if they want an open license then they must pay X amount. We'll say $180 mil per year since EA pays $300 mil for exclusivity. The NFL knows that if 2k says yes that EA won't just let Madden die, they will also pay the $180 million for an open license. Now the NFL has two games and is getting paid an extra 20% than they would otherwise get with an exclusive license.

Or the other alternative to option 2 is that 2k says they are willing to pay that amount for a non-exclusive license, but EA doesn't want the license to open up and they agree to pay $400 mil per year for an exclusive license. The NFL is again making more money than they otherwise would and 2k got close, but not cigar.

The NFL really holds all of the chips. EA isn't going to let Madden die, so if the NFL can create a model that nets them more money with two games compared to a n exclusive license and 2k is willing to pay the money for the non-exclusive license, then I think with 99% certainty EA is going to either match the offer or pay more for an exclusive license. I see no way EA backs out and 2k gets a de-facto exclusive license like they have with the NBA right now since EA and the Live series are such a mess.

Just a heads up - that article gotten taken down by GameInformer and they're the source that everyone else is linking back to. Might not be a true story.

I originally had IGN as first source. But they quickly pulled the article right after I posted it, so I switched to the Game informer.

I think it is true with both IGN and Game informer both posting it within a couple minutes of each other. I think they just posted it earlier than they were allowed too.

Yeah, they aren't back on the list of licensees yet either.

Polygon is reporting about a new deal between 2K and the NFLPA as well.

Maybe the I's weren't dotted and T's weren't crossed when other outlets started reporting the news this morning?
