Re: 2K Partners with NFLPA to Allow NFL Players in Multiple Football Games
Which I loved, and wanted expanded. Rather then try and micro-manage every players ratings (which is impossible, really), just treat every player as average and highlight what they do better/worse then an average player at their position. Can you *really* see the difference between a 77 and a 82 in normal gameplay?
Regardless, I'm hoping 2k can at least adopt the AI from APF2k8 if nothing else.
This was ingenious. Most gamers will naturally focus on a players speed, but this forced the gamer to try different players and gauge who they felt was best to them. Perfect for APF where it was 1 season and no progression/regression.
It never really made it into other sports games that I remember tho unfortunately.

Re: 2K Partners with NFLPA to Allow NFL Players in Multiple Football Games
And the sad part for me is that EA can make the best football game under the sun that they ever had, and I still likely won't buy it. Not to spite them, but their core game/gameplay is not something that I enjoy playing. I've mentioned it long ago, but it has to do with the way that the game... well... plays. The control, the camera, the visuals, everything about it. I've tried again and again, and it's just not my go-to. This is partially why I hope 2K doesn't change much from their old format if they go simulation, because I'd hate for them to change all of these aspects toward a more Madden-like style and make me go: "Wait, this isn't the 2K that I remember." We shall see.
I absolutely felt that way with Madden for most of this century. But I think gameplay started evolving in a way I like in 2014. I do love how Madden feels for me, right now. It will be interesting to see how affects how I feel about 2K.
I loved and played both 2K5 and 2K8 (as well as earlier versions) to death. If 2K just brings back their concept of custom online leagues, that would go a long ways. But gameplay, and not in a judgmental good or bad way, can have just as much affect on whether I play it. I could see it feeling like sliding into old, but perfectly fitting jeans. It could also just feel off because I've played so much Madden over the last few years.
Regardless, I rarely play competing sports games in any year. I hate going back and forth. I'll pick one and probably just stick with it unless a dealbreaker pops up.
As for what NFL2K22 will be, everything they have done would work perfectly in an APF2K8 type of game that uses current stars instead of legends. And that would walk right into an ultimate team type of mode, which is probably the revenue generator 2K wants to be a part of.
As long as 2K wants to use the NFL licenses for logos and players, they have to agree to whatever NFL and NFLPA say. My guess is that EA does believe that the NFL license that allows them provide fans with a team and schedule of games that matches what they in their favorite team in real life is the key to fairly large % of people that buy the game.
I'm not talking about sim or franchise guys, either. I mean the millions of fans that play two games, Madden and CoD every year, no matter the reviews, no matter the drama. So what could be valuable enough for 2K to still be interested if they can't provide that?
They may never touch Madden in sales, but do believe they have enough good will from the community that they can lure enough to make the game profitable via VC. Now, that can't be all they offer, though.
So what can 2K do to draw in gamers with the NFL license, if they can't do an NFL simulation game? My guess is emphasize stars, and come up with creative ways to do league play, both solo and online, with fewer teams and more board game-like mechanics for player movement. Mainly, lean on what Metalhead has done with SMB3's franchise mode, not copying it, but utilizing the freedom of not being real to become more fair and strategic.
And when did I end up getting into Ultimate team? On those days between playing real opponents in an online league. Playing live people a lot makes playing solo a lot less fun, but sports games have mostly had terrible matchmaking, so that Play Now online was terrible. It was NHL that hooked me, as I realized that HUT scratched a lot of the same itches I get from playing in a league, but with more time spent playing games and more freedom to manage your roster on your own timetable.
It's not a perfect fit, but the connected franchise fad has really ruined online leagues for me. Too many CPU teams in leagues, which just throws in all the bad AI of trying to play solo into online leagues, which is what I used to see as how to avoid that crappy AI.
So 2K can build a fantastic player movement process, because it won't deal with real life restrictions, it will be built the same way we scheme out balancing in board games. Find ways to allow the player to evaluate talent and value in a game of limited resources.
I would assume that language in the contract requires 2K to take whatever steps they need to take to prevent a custom league that matches the NFL in a number of ways. They can't just set it up and let gamers do it, because that would result in them losing the license. We have no idea how easy the NFL and EA can force 2K out, but I imagine they have a lot of leeway.
My bias is that I want a return of online leagues like I grew up with. There was never a more fun and competitive experience than playing in 6-12 team leagues. You can find a good core group of players, and you can roll for many seasons. And 2K has had some great custom league features in the past.
Really curious what Metalhead's Custom Pennant Race is going to be like. They could be a road map for competitive online gaming and leagues.Last edited by JayhawkerStL; 08-12-2020, 11:33 PM.Comment

With the amount of negative coverage Madden 21 is receiving, the announcement of what 2k's game will be can't come sooner. Man M21 looks awful

With EAs attempt at snagging the arcade audience with the yard I cant help but think 2k takes getting back in the football scene personally and competes with EA.Comment

God I hope it's a new All Pro Football with current NFL players. That would honestly be the best case scenario.Fightin' Texas Aggies

What kind of release date do you all think we are looking at? They said 2021 for the first game but do you think it’ll be later in the year when they still will have to compete for sales directly with Madden even though there game isn’t sim or something like a spring release?

I was hoping for some type of announcement this summer. But not I think they start promoting it around Playoffs/January.Comment

I'm think Spring-June release. They mentioned a couple times Early 2021. I don't see them wanting to compete head on with Madden. They released APF in July before NCAA 08.

That would be awesome. If they do it this way only 4-5 months before we start to get a look at what they are working on. 🤞🏻

I actually feel like one of the best approaches for 2K is basically to do something that allows a fusion of MyPark and MyTeam with an APF 2k8 style customization engine. This would allow them to rival Madden in the gameplay world while keeping them squarely in the "arcade" sector.

Whatever they make, I just hope they have a PC version. With Madden and MLB both being on PC now (MLB in 21), I’m strongly considering building a gaming PC next year w the new NVIDIA cards instead of getting a next gen console.
Gaming mods + old school emulators hooked up to my OLED may be too good to pass up.
