Sure EA still had the license but it didn't stop 2k hunger and birth APF 2k8😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Not only that some of these other games 2K has don't come out annually but biannually. PGA 2K only comes out every two years and I think they might do the same with Top Spin. They only release WWE and NBA 2K and WWE isn't really a sport.

I wish I could dig up my post in these very forums from the first year of EA-NFL exclusivity deal where I confidently stated we would never see another non-EA football game. It's amazing how many doofuses here at that time were celebrating the deal (!).

Of course, being right about that plus $5 would just about get me a small coffee at Starbucks.

Really nothing new here. Everyone assumed the year extension would be easily attainable.

Quote "As far as the possibility of losing the exclusive rights to allow more simulation games from competitors, I was told, “It’s not impossible, but there’s honestly no way someone else could compete with us for the rest of this generation and possibly into the next one due to the timing of the deal and how long it takes to make a game like this." “We’re not worried.”

We have known this too. So we are where we have been, waiting to see what happens when this exclusive sim license expires. By the way EA, why are you so worried about competition.

Blame needs to go to the consumers imo. Not enough people spoke with their wallets.

Too many people continued to purchase Madden when it was an absolutely abysmal game during the PS4/XBox One generation. And chose not to purchase APF2K8, for whatever reasons they had. Consumers have shown if given a choice between a poorly made but licensed NFL game and nothing, they'll choose to go with the NFL game. And won't give those same considerations to a non-NFL game.

The funny thing is people do crave options. It's odd to me seeing so many pit NCAA 25 against Madden 25, when NCAA 25 is essentially a refined NCAA-skinned version of Madden 24.

Even if 2K were to make an NFL game now, I think they'd essentially be where they were back in 2002-2005 versus Madden being the market leader at the time. The game would have to be demonstrably better to even stand a chance I'd think. I'd love to see another NFL2K game, but 2K shouldn't be expected to protect consumers from themselves.

All I know is my Take-Two stock has gone up 10% in the last week so they have the money for the NFL simulation license.

Not enough people spoke with their wallets because 2K did not produce a game which was compelling enough for their monetary speech. That's 2K's fault.

I agree. They went from 2k5, which had great depth to 2k8 which was essentially just a shallow season mode, H2H, and limited customization. They overestimated the fan interest in NFL HOFers. That was a time where 2k Sports were consolidating their portfolio. Any title that wasn't selling well was dropped. Visual Concepts/2K wasn't as popular mainstream as are now. I always felt the NFL Legend route was limiting because you can't have a true type of Franchise mode with legend.

I've been at the point where i have little faith. I always felt a new game from scratch coming out within 4 years was far fetched. Even a game like EA CFB 25 was built off the Madden engine. But, next year should be the time when NFL should decide whether Madden gets the extra year. Even if an arcade 2k game comes out next year, I don't think it's success will impact NFL's decision. It'll be whether NFL wants to maintain consistency or wants to change it up.

Was the game ever going sell if it didn't have an NFL license, even if it had a deep franchise mode and excellent customization options?

I doubt it. Keep in mind that Madden still had some goodwill from it's PS2 days, customization wasn't quite what it is today, 2KSports wasn't what it is today, etc.

So when 2K/VC said that APF was to 1. create one last game for 2K football fans and 2. test if there was a market for another football game, I tend to believe them. I thought the legends didn't really expand their audience but alot of 2K fans enjoyed that game for a very long time.

Backbreaker, Blitz, Maximum Football all essentially came and went. Imo, APF probably had the most longevity of any of them but it was never going to last as a simulation without the NFL license.

They are definitely afraid of 2K competition. If 2K ever got the Fifa license. They'll figure out a way to lock out 2K just like they're doing with the NFL license.

If so, that would be a business decision made well above the developers who are being quoted. It's possible the developers themselves don't really care all that much personally and would welcome the challenge professionally.
