There should be an implied understanding the mom & pops store may not have as extensive a menu as Cheesecake Factory. Or may not offer 20 different kinds of beer. The limitations 2K faced DID matter; you're trying to act like the playing field was equal and it was no where close to being that.
I cannot possibly consider Take 2 — a publicly-traded company with a nearly $30 Billion market cap — a "mom & pop" institution. That comparison just does not work at all, I do not care about the context.

The community can't sit back and say they want additional options but don't support it.
Consider the possibility that the community did speak, and what it spoke was that, in the AAA simulation sports video game space on modern consoles, what the community wants is licensed products featuring real-life teams and players.

To that end, maybe Take 2 should have developed a game which could have better stood up and stood out better on its own without any licenses. It's plenty doable; Rocket League did it, Super Mega Baseball did it. If you consider Fall Guys a sports game (I'd argue it is, albeit loosely) then that succeeded wildly as well. It just takes a little more creativity and originality on behalf of the developer.

More importantly, it also takes a healthy dose of humility and acceptance that league licensing is the kingmaker in the simulation sports video game space, so probably don't make an unlicensed simulation sports game. Get another hook. Everyone knows the market isn't fair, it never was. There are other avenues to success if you make them.

For the few people that would take the time, they'd likely use the customization options to try to make the game look like the NFL or NCAA.

Which is why making a successful non-NFL/NCAA licensed game is a huge longshot. I'm sure the developer isn't in business to essentially make a how-to for EA Tiburon to make a football game. I think it's safe to say the vast majority of consumers are going to choose to play a good-great NFL/NCAA game versus a good-great non-licensed game.

So if having a choice mattered, it's on the community to understand that. It's not some act of charity. It's understanding the playing field isn't equal, and giving appropriate weight to that fact.
If it were a college game, I would say having actual players matters very little to the people who play those games. Those players are gone 4 years into a dynasty anyways. Having the real schools in the game is a big deal though, and the schools wouldn't sign on for a game unless the players were in the game and compensated so that's why we are where we're at with CFB 25.

As for a generic game in general, I think one can succeed, it would just have to knock it out of the park. Yeah APF 2k8 tried that and failed, but that was a half-baked attempt that didn't even have a franchise mode. If 2k were to undertake that and give it's all into it I think it could be a good game. Basically picture Maximum but with all the development and marketing resources of 2k behind it. Generic teams and players yes, but options to upload logos and customize everything about every team and/or school. Even better if roster/league files were shareable, and the online communities could collaborate on creating leagues that resemble the real ones. It would be like the old days of roster collaboration and sharing.

And yeah, 2k is not a mom and pop company. Maximum would be closer to that. And if that game is at all good with on the field gameplay and doesn't have predatory types of microtransactions, then I definitely plan on supporting that game by purchasing addons.

Take Two did not mention the NFL game in their conference call yesterday. I had an 'out of sight, out of mind' mindset with this game. So not disappointed, but it doesn't look good since some games talked about were for '25/26.

Looks like we won't be having this conversation again until PS6

I hear you! There was definitely a sense of freedom and experimentation back then. I think part of it was the novelty of the internet and online identities. We weren't so worried about everything being permanent or curated. Remember when usernames were just for fun, and you could reinvent yourself on every forum? Now everything's tied to a real-world identity, which has pros and cons, of course. Sometimes I miss that anonymity. I recall randomly chatting with people on Omegle back in college, and while there were some weird encounters, it was also strangely liberating to talk to strangers without the pressure of pre-conceived notions. It's a different world now, that's for sure. Maybe a balance is possible, where we can explore different facets of ourselves without completely erasing our digital footprint.

As soon as EA gets the license extension
I believe that's when 2k will announce that arcade reveal

Just a guess and a hunch

Something must of happened behind closed doors and I truly believe 2k got cold feet
Because it is a arcade game
                  And it has to sell
If this was simulation it would of been had a debut
