Far be it for me to act like Bayless has any common sense, but what good would it do the gay community to wish the guy would be outed and to accuse him of hurling a racial slur in the same book?

Skip has developed a reputation for acting/talking with pure stupidity so a statement like that (regardless whether he actually said it or not) seems very plausible

What background do I need? He never called Aikman gay, period. End of discussion. He was asked the background of each of his 3 books & he gave it.

People are zeroing in on the wrong thing. If people want to discredit what Bayless has to say on the subject, they need to prove 1) people weren't calling in to his radio show to question his sexuality. 2) that Switzer didn't ask Bayless about it. 3) that there weren't players on the team that questioned whether Aikman was gay.

I bet you love People, and US weekly...not that there is anything wrong with liking those magazines, they are entertaining. The tabloid aspects of ESPN can be entertaining sometimes also. I dont know why anyone would take that sort of thing seriously though.

what a ridiculous post. All of those points have been refuted in the link I provided by someone that COVERED the Cowboys during that time. It's clearly a waste of time discussing this with you because you need some perspective to understand.

So this, in effect, proves fans were calling in w/all sorts of accusations. That in itself was not worth reporting (And I have no idea if, before the book, Skip gave those "nameless, faceless fans" a voice. If he did, shame on him.), but when it comes from his teammates & his coach as well, now I can see him bringing that factor to light in his relaying of conversations.

Keep in mind, Bayless never said Aikman was worried about being outed in the book. Switzer claimed that was Troy's worry. So it seems to me, Troy never gave it a 2nd thought. In fact, when talking about Aikman's objections, Skip says,

Troy would call me at home saying I can’t write this and I can’t write that. It really wasn’t about the gay stuff.

Troy was fine w/that portion. Know why? Aikman knew Bayless wasn't accusing him of being gay. You're jumping up like a rabid dog for no reason. Not once...I've repeated this a thousand times....I've c&p'd like crazy....not once was Troy Aikman ever outed as gay in Bayless' book. Why you, & all others jumping @ Skip, can't acknowledge that one point is hard for me to figure out.

And I can't believe you, of all posters, want to claim someone needs perspective. You will argue tooth & nail w/people Clemens didn't use steroids. If that isn't naive, my opinion certainly isn't. You're the demographic right/left wing media is looking for. Someone who doesn't examine the situation on its own instead of bringing in predetermined opinions to keep the facts from sinking in.

Like I said, Bayless' engine doesn't fire on all cylinders. So I wouldn't completely dismiss the notion. But if that is the case, it's mighty stupid.

Bayless isn't claiming the Switzers were his source for the gay rumors. The blogger, just as yourself, is going off half-cocked for no reason whatsoever.

Again, open warfare between Aikman and Switzer. I was close to Barry and also his daughter, Kathy–who basically lived with him. She was a close friend of mine, so I was privy to a lot of things most people weren’t privy to.

So Switzer's daughter was his source for conversations between Troy & Barry. Not Aikman's sexuality.

After the "n" incident.....

This lead to incredible mudslinging back and forth and I’m sure you know about this and it became the flash part of the book but shouldn’t have been. It was just another wanna be incredible incidents between the two but, the Troy Aikman gay rumors had been in Dallas for several years. I did talk radio in Dallas and I would get at least one call a week from someone asking if Troy Aikman is gay. I would hear about the various incidents and would not pay too much attention to them until Switzer asked me at one point if it was true. I told him I didn’t know.

So we've learned a few things, if we are actually trying to listen to facts, not our emotional man crush on our sports heroes.

1. Bayless never claimed Kathy Switzer told him Troy was gay.

2. The rumors were there before Barry became head coach.

3. Kathy could never have been the "source", since her dad went elsewhere to know if it was true.

4. Bayless never intended the "gay angle" to be the focal point of the book. It was a small element w/in the battle between QB & coach.

5. Skip didn't give the call-in stuff creedence till Barry asked about it.

6. Bayless said "I don't know" when asked if Troy was gay. So once more, Skip Bayless never said Troy was gay.

You're so far into it, you can't see the forest for the trees. You still can't get it out of your head Bayless never said Troy was gay. You are continuing to dispute something that never took place. Its the same as if you were writing a thesis disclaiming Einstein's theory of cream cheese-powered rockets when he never said such a thing.

You don't have to do anything for rumours to start. People @ work thought I was gay. Single guy in the medical profession who keeps to himself & doesn't try to get in the pants of every woman he sees & people reached their own conclusions.
