NFL Off Topic
Great article, but it's something myself and a others have been saying for years around here.
Essentially, CFB and the spread offense are not preparing QBs for the NFL.
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said the new crop of college quarterbacks were flummoxed by a simple question about an “under” front, one of the most common defensive alignments. “Whoa, no one’s ever told me ‘front’ before,” he remembers one prospect saying. “No one’s ever talked to me about reading these defenses.”
Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley said he had the same results when he asked prospects a question about defenses shifting from a common scheme called “cover 2” to an equally mundane tactic called “cover 3.” Hue Jackson, the offensive coordinator from the Bengals, said he had to dumb down his questions, while Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton said some QBs failed to grasp things as basic as understanding a common play call. “You have to teach these kids the absolute basics,” he said.
Read the Bryce Petty stuff and apply that to RGIII and some of his football struggles make sense.Last edited by N51_rob; 09-10-2015, 12:40 PM.Moderator

Re: NFL Off Topic
I figured that everyone knew that College Coaches didn't/don't care about developing players for their next employer, they're more concerned with how those players will help THEM win and that when these players go to the NFL, they're basically telling them "Oh(insert random college QB)can't read a Defense? That sucks but that's you're problem, not mine anymore."
Was definitely a good read and would like to have a discussion on this.Last edited by ProfessaPackMan; 09-10-2015, 12:50 PM.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I know I've had this conversation at least a handful of times in various threads here. Interesting article, but it's just telling us what we already know from the mouths of NFL coaches themselves. When you hear the term "system QB" it really just means "can't read a defense."Comment

How can you be a QB who is a professional or will be, and not know these terms?
I didn't need a coach to teach me those things. Hell, some of that you can learn from Madden.
It's not CFB's job to train these players for the NFL, so no blame on them. It's on the players for thinking they can be a professional and not know this stuff. Wow. This ain't some part time job.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: NFL Off Topic
Its funny, because I always use Aaron Rodgers as the prime example of why sometimes it's better to start the aging, journeyman veteran as opposed to throwing the rookie to the wolves. Learning on the fly isn't always conducive to growth. Maybe Bryce Petty will get the time he needs to develop into a good pro, because he seems like he's got the talent.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
A high school QB with NFL aspirations doesn't necessarily have to go to a school with a pro offense but they might guess that playing for Urban Meyer won't prep them, other than playing with talented WRs.
Or that for all the talen Saban gets, he hasn't produced a good NFL QB.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
If you believe that college is to prepare you for a job after school in your desired profession. Then I would say the same holds true for these college programs. Not knowing basic football concepts is a failure on the players and coaches in college. A lot falls in the individuals I agree but coaches like PPM stated don't really care about a player once their eligibility has been exhausted.
Plenty of blame to go around. Skipping over the fact that the NFL will rush these players out there that are not ready to run an NFL offense and then just dump them rather than actually "coach em up".Moderator

Re: NFL Off Topic
Don't may recruiters sell highly ranked QB prospects on how their program will prep them for the next level or the NFL?

I think we also need to realize that just being drafted into the NFL is a MAJOR accomplishment that 99% of college QBs don't see. Oftentimes, we lose sight of this. If a coach gets a QB drafted then that, in and of itself, is him doing a helluva job prepping him for the pros.Last edited by dsallupinyaarea; 09-10-2015, 03:04 PM.NFL - Vikings

So you would say that a lack of understanding of basic defensive concepts is prepared? Being drafted is a major accomplishment, but it's big leap from being drafted to being prepared to play QB in the NFL. If it was easy Josh McCown would be out of the league.Moderator

Re: NFL Off Topic
Why would a team draft a QB that lacks a basic understanding of defensive concepts? Isn't that on them? Blaming it on someone else is passing the buck.
But to answer your question, yes. If a college coach gets a QB drafted in say, the top 3 rounds, he's done his job. He's got him somewhere that 99% of his peers won't go.
This is the real world equivalent of graduating law school, getting hired to a prestigious firm, flaming out then having the partners at the firm blaming it on your college professors. lol.
It just doesn't make any real world sense.NFL - Vikings

Definitely. CFB is such a serious business now that you have to be in the business of winning, and teaching/coaching is secondary.
I believe the onus is on the players to learn on their own (or get help from a coach... but NCAA violations abound I'm sure) and the NFL teams for identifying who is willing and able to learn if they're behind. If you draft a guy who is behind on the mental side of the game you better have another option at QB. Can't blame a kid for busting out if he doesn't know what the hell he's looking at across the LOS.
CFB is NOT the minor leagues. Preparing a select few for the NFL shouldn't be a top priority on coach's lists.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
