Re: NFL Off Topic
I feel the same way about JJ Watt. I can't fault him for striking while he can. Gotta take full advantage if Corporate America comes knocking. Everyone else telling me how great of a guy he is, and how you and me could learn a thing or two from such a swell guy is the problem. It is a constant campaign by sports writers and media personalities reminding us. Turns me off completely. So much so that I find myself rooting against him when he would otherwise go ignored by me.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I can see how people can get tired over JJ Watt but at least from what we've seen so far he's a lot more genuine than Tiger Woods ever was and possibly moreso than Jordan in that while he's crafted a brand for himself it's not so meticulously corporate. Watt just seems like the All-American good guy.
I think part of the reason why people are tired of it all is because we've been burned by seeing our "heroes" revealed for the frauds that they are. (Woods being a misogynist sex maniac and Jordan being an unrepentant gambler) People in the back of their minds are saying "this guy can't be real. The other shoe is going to drop." and this breeds a cynicism that won't allow us to buy into all the good that he's doing. It'd be a little different if he was a little more like Rob Gronkowski who does many of the same things but he's also shown himself to be a party dude who lives the life we all would love to have. At least that makes him a bit more three dimensional compared to Watt.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: NFL Off Topic
I usually get tired of the crap they're doing with Watt, but I don't see anything wrong with the situation for what SPTO said. I don't feel like he's putting on a show or front. I feel like he's genuine in how he is. If that's the case, can't be mad at him using his own personality to shine.

Re: NFL Off Topic
A friend of mine went to high school in New Berlin. He played against JJ's brother Derek. Apparently Derek used to trash talk on the field about kidnapping the opposing team's sisters/mothers/grandmothers/what have you and taking them up to his brother's dungeon. Creepy dude, even creeper family.
Another friend of mine grew up in Rhinelander, that's in northern WI. Said he heard rumors about it but the people who live up there are pretty sure the local government has been paid off to keep it hushed.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

A Tennessee mom to Cam Newton: Here’s what my 9-year-old saw
Tennesee Titans fan Rosemary Plorin of Nashville attended Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers with her fourth-grade daughter. On Monday, she sent us this note she wrote to Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton:
Dear Mr. Newton,
Congratulations on your win in Nashville today. Our team played well, but yours played better. Kudos to the Panthers organization.
That game happened to be my nine year old daughter’s first live NFL experience. She was surprised to see so many Panthers’ fans sitting in our section of the stadium; that doesn’t happen much at fourth grade football games. And she was excited we were near the end zone, so we would be close to the “action,” particularly in the second half?
Because of where we sat, we had a close up view of your conduct in the fourth quarter. The chest puffs. The pelvic thrusts. The arrogant struts and the ‘in your face’ taunting of both the Titans’ players and fans. We saw it all.
I refuse to believe you don’t realize you are a role model. You are paid millions of dollars every week to play hard and be a leader. In the off season you’re expected to make appearances, support charities, and inspire young kids to pursue your sport and all sports. With everything the NFL has gone through in recent years, I’m confident they have advised that you are, by virtue of your position and career choice, a role model.
And because you are a role model, your behavior brought out like behavior in the stands. Some of the Panthers fans in our section began taunting the hometown fans. Many Titans fans booed you, a few offering instructive, but not necessarily family friendly, suggestions as to how you might change your behavior.
My daughter sensed the change immediately – and started asking questions. Won’t he get in trouble for doing that? Is he trying to make people mad? Do you think he knows he looks like a spoiled brat?
I didn’t have great answers for her, and honestly, in an effort to minimize your negative impact and what was otherwise a really fun day, I redirected her attention to the cheerleaders and mascot.
I could tell she was still thinking about it as we boarded a shuttle back to our car. “I guess he doesn’t have kids or a Mom at home watching the game,” she added.
I don’t know about your family life Mr. Newton, but I think I’m safe in saying thousands of kids watch you every week. You have amazing talent and an incredible platform to be a role model for them. Unfortunately, what you modeled for them today was egotism, arrogance and poor sportsmanship.
Is that what your coaches and mentors modeled for you, Mr. Newton?

JJ Watt appears to be perfect and we are tired of having that jammed down our throat because we are not perfect.
Consider Michael Jordan. He is a excellent sports "hero" because outside of the court he seems to be an unpleasant person. Sure he is a god-like basketball player, but at least we may be better people than him.
JJ Watt on the other hand doesn't seem to have any flaws, and it makes us feel bad about ourselves.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
The best part about that letter is she directed her 9-year old daughter's attention away from Cam towards the cheerleaders.

Re: NFL Off Topic
Note: You may wish to clean up your post. Must have been a problem with the copy and paste.
I do not like people like this mother. First off she is full of ****. I highly doubt her young daughter said “I guess he doesn’t have kids or a Mom at home watching the game.” The more likely scenario was that she was oblivious to what Cam was doing but the mother was worried that it presented a bad image so she made a big deal out of it. This happens often where parents make an issue of something that had zero effect on their kids.
But what is she complaining about? What did Cam do that no other professional athlete does? Will she send a letter to the Titans each time one of their players celebrates or taunts the opposing team?
Most importantly though, enough with the athletes are role models crap if you think the job of a role model is to instill values in your children. No that is the job of a parent. An athlete can be a role model (Cal Ripken Jr. is probably the best example) but they are not role models simply because they are professional athletes.
People are taking the "it takes a village..." adage too far.Comment
