There's a big difference between using a source as background material compared to out and out quoting and making said source public.

I think that went into sufficient detail.

The story on Peyton Manning and a Tennessee trainer who settled with the school for $300,000 back in 1997 is coming back into the fore today. We wrote about it

Either way, it's not what Manning did that i'm disappointed about because well, that's par for the course in collegiate sports and in young people in general. It's the coverup and then absolutely destroying this lady's career that has me dismayed.

I played college sports and know a lot of others that did and have never heard a story like this. This is a gross over-generalization. And even if it was, it doesn't mean it should be accepted behavior.

Indeed it's an over-generalization but i'm not defending Manning at all. He and his father completely destroyed a woman's career and reputation. The thing that Peyton did was pretty damn disgusting and I would HOPE and i'm glad you confirm that this isn't something that goes on with regularity.

I'm just saying that in the grand scheme of things, that one act by Manning wasn't the absolute worst thing anyone can do. It's not like he murdered the woman. I'm talking about degrees of bad things he could've done. Reading the article though, it does seem like Tennessee had a real problem with gender equality and sexual harassment. If the story had gone public, Manning probably wouldn't have faced as much heat as the school and the people running the program because in that respect there was institutional sexism and harassment going on.

I can see that, though I personally don't have strong feelings about it. Collegiate athletics is filled with cover ups, even more so when it comes to heisman candidates. So finding out it happened here is kinda like "well, that is the nature of the beast."**

After the initial sweep it under the rug, it becomes dangerous to speak of it again. In the book all that should have been mentioned was how it was an immature thing to do. Instead it was framed as implying that she could dish it out but not take it. That was just stupid; you guys won the battle, just move on. Instead she files a suit blaming this for the reason of the demotion. Having said that, I'm not sure how much blame Peyton receives for destroying her career.

** To clarify, I do hate how collegiate athletics operates, I am not okay with it. My point is that this story doesn't change anything. I'm not naive enough to think that Peyton was squeaky clean.

Didn't Eli have a rape allegation in college too? I think prior to social media a lot of guys probably got a pass and got away with a lot more. Jamis Winston is an example of this.

I agree with you, it's why I celebrate JJ Watt but i'm expecting to have his "good name" flushed down the toilet before too long.

The start of all of this was comparing/contrasting how the players are discussed. Cam got ripped for his press conference, whereas Peyton got a pass when he left the field without congratulating any opponents after losing to the Saints.

Jameis'/Cam's past gets brought up whenever they're talked about in depth. Many people had no idea about this story about Peyton until a week ago.

Would rather be talking about free agency and team needs. I'm sure in a couple months that will start happening but from now til training camp i'm sure we'll all be talking about the APB wire and other such things.

To be fair, this story happened 20 years ago...I watched Peyton all through college and people were aware of it at the time. It would be like someone bringing up Cam's indiscretions at Florida in 2030 and saying no one knows about it.
