They aren't skirting any rules. They're taking the current logos and stripes off, a putting new stickers on. Then after the game, they'll take those stickers off and put the original ones back on. Same exact helmets.

I'm pretty sure he understands that no rules are being skirted by switching decals.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
The only reason I hate that rule is it eliminates those god awful orange cream bucs jerseys that are dear to my heart. They are so ugly, but yet I love it when they wear them. The Broncos AFL jerseys on the other hand.....and the Eagles blue and yellows are just hideous.NFL- Green Bay Packers

Re: NFL Off Topic
They did a "study" and found that players were more prone to get concussions when they wore different helmets with alternate uniforms a few years ago.
The rule is that players have to use the same helmet through the year to ensure it's properly fit for them (or something like that).
The Broncos are switching up their decals so it can be done but since the Chargers have white helmets it makes them more difficult to get creative.
I find it hard to understand, how do wearing different helmets make you more prone to a concussion? Aren't all the helmets built with a safety protocol?
I just find it weird that you get more concussions when using different stuff when it's all made with the same safety messures in mind.Comment

I'm not really sure what he was going for but I'm assuming he's thinking the rule is new and he's saying that if players were using an alternate helmet they might be able to skirt the concussion protocol a bit.

You are only going to wear that helmet once, so you can cut corners and no one will notice.
That is my guess.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
I think it would be fairly easy to regulate specs in helmets so this is more of a "see what we did" rule than anything.
College teams wear like 5 helmets in a season lol.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic
FYI, via PFT when this was enacted in 2013:
“Our Head, Neck, and Spine Committee, chaired by Drs. Hunt Batjer and Richard Ellenbogen, and the Player Safety Advisory Panel, chaired by John Madden and Ronnie Lott, have recommended that players no longer wear different helmets as part of a ‘Throwback’ or ‘Third’ uniform,” the memo from the league office said. “Our office supports this change and has reviewed it with the chairman of our Health and Safety ownership committee, Dr. John York, who concurs with this recommendation.”
The league office told all teams planning to wear throwback uniforms this season that players must wear their regular helmets on throwback dates. The outside of the helmet can be modified by removing or replacing decals, but the helmet itself must stay the same. Once players have properly fitted helmets that they’re comfortable wearing, the NFL doesn’t want them changing helmets during the season just for appearances.

Re: NFL Off Topic
On helmets...I don't know if this is relevant, but I'm a military helicopter pilot and our helmets are specially fit to our head in an initial fitting. The material then "morphs" around your head as it heats up during initial use and you go back and have some minor tweaks/adjustments made. This process continues for several months until it's just right. The helmet gets inspected/adjusted annually and you aren't supposed to fly with anything else except your helmet that has been broken in for your head.
My point is (if their process is similar) that the process of breaking in a new helmet for safety takes time and if they were changing constantly I can see where that would effect player safety. Now, you would think with technology today they would have an "inner" part of the helmet that is broken in specifically for that player and just change the outer shell from week to week to have different colors/logos/whatever."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

I remember seeing something when this started along those lines, probably not to the same degree but similar but just couldn't find anything specific.
Most of the stories I skimmed through (tonight) seemed to imply it being a defense mechanism but I do vaguely recall reading that there was more science to it.
And even then it may be a bit of a middle ground.Comment
