The Raiders just set the NFL record for penalties in a game, and just hit 200 penalty yards.

Ugly scene with Wade Phillips here, hope he is ok.

And very sad to hear that about Marty. Grew up in San Diego he always seemed like a really great man.

Good news on DC Wade Phillips - precautionary test results all normal so far. Contrary to a FOX report, he does not have a broken leg.

              Re: NFL Off Topic

There are a few components to this diatribe before we even get to today’s game. For one, let me be clear that I hate complaining about the refs and I’m fully cognizant of the fact that the Seahawks do commit a lot of very legitimate penalties. Fans of every team thinks their guys get flagged too frequently but in Seattle’s case, it’s probably true. Since the start of 2014, the Seahawks have been called for 7.5 penalties per game, which is the second highest rate in the NFL over that time period, including leading the league in ‘14. Okay, fine, the Seahawks commit a bunch of fouls, and a lot of ‘em (false starts, neutral zone infractions, etc) aren’t subjective. Second most in the league? Ehhh... maybe.

But here’s where it starts to get wonky: over that same 2+ year stretch, the Seahawks’ opponents have been called for the fewest penalties in the league. Not only that, teams playing Seattle were called for the fewest penalties in the league in 2014, then were called for the fewest penalties in the league again in 2015. We’ll have to wait for the rest of this week’s games to finish, but as it stands right now, Seahawks’ opponents have been called for the second-fewest penalties so far in 2016.

Penalties committed by each team are actually pretty consistent from year-to-year. Disciplined teams stay disciplined and undisciplined teams don’t. Fine. But opponent penalties, a category defined by dozens of different opponents and nearly 20 different officiating crews, should even out over a sample size this large. For teams playing the Seahawks to consistently get flagged at a far-below-average rate, year over year, is beyond the scope of random distribution.

In this one, the Seahawks were called for 11 penalties, costing them 76 yards and, more importantly, gave the Saints four first downs on 3rd down plays that were otherwise unsuccessful. Two of them were borderline back-breakers. Now, most of those calls were legit, I will grant you that. But how a team like the Saints, who are committing as many penalties per game as the Seahawks have over the last three years, and who constantly run pick plays where the only intent is to hit the defender, only gets called for two inconsequential false starts is beyond me.

I could spend the whole article going call by call but I’ll save us all the self-pitying torture of that exercise. What I will highlight are two blatant illegal screen plays that New Orleans ran on what were probably their two most significant plays of the game. The first came on a goal-line pass to Brandin Cooks that gave the Saints the lead and would ultimately prove to be the winning score. As Cooks slants in from the outside, Willie Snead straight up bullrushes Jeremy Lane, shoving him out of the play to give Cooks a too-easy TD. The second one came on the very next drive, when Snead again ran straight into Lane, only this time it was an “out route” in which his entire purpose appeared to be shoulder-chucking Lane out of the play. It was successful, went uncalled, and sprung Cooks wide open for 20 yards, putting New Orleans in field goal range* for a crucial extra three points. In a season where we’ve seen Jermaine Kearse called for offensive PI four times for everything from breathing on the defender to making minimal contact with an extended hand, it is beyond reason that fouls like the ones the Saints didn’t even try to disguise go uncalled.
I don't want to hear anyone say the Hawks have the refs in their pockets ever again.

I saw the replay but unsure of what happened to him...was it a bad concussion or neck injury? That's what I figured as he hit the ground hard (couldn't entirely tell if his head snapped back).

200 yards in penalties and Derek Carr had 513 yards passing ...

Carr may have just come very close to essentially destroying the record books.

                      Cam upset.

After the Carolina Panthers' win on Sunday, QB Cam Newton said he plans to take his grievance with no-calls on late hits to commissioner Roger Goodell.

CHARLOTTE, N.C, -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said Sunday that he plans to take his grievance with no-calls on late hits to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

"It's really taking the fun out of the game for me -- honestly, it really is," Newton said. "At times, I don't even feel safe. Enough is enough. I plan on talking to commissioner Goodell about this. It's not fun, and I don't know what I have to do."

Newton said the breaking point came in the second half of the Panthers' 30-20 victory over Arizona on Sunday when he took a hard shot to the knees. The play happened on third-and-goal from Arizona's 2-yard line. Defensive tackle Calais Campbell came in low as Newton released an incomplete pass to Philly Brown.

"I could have torn an ACL," Newton said. "That was the breaking point for me."

Newton was on the ground for longer than usual as Carolina and Arizona players checked on him. When he got up, he took his case to the official and got in the face of at least one Arizona player.

Newton used the words "bullcrap" and "horsecrap" in reference to his conviction that officials aren't making calls when he's hit in the pocket. Newton said other quarterbacks in the league get those calls more often.

"I showed a lot of frustration today, and I apologize to the referee I was talking to. But I don't think there's a person that can go through what I go through and keep their head, you know what I'm saying? Hits to the head, that's one thing, but when you're not protected in the pocket, that's another thing. It became the story of my life ever since I came in. It's always, 'Oh, we missed that, I'm sorry.' That's bullcrap -- that's bullcrap."

Newton was unhappy in general after taking several hits that didn't draw flags.

"When you constantly see the hits, when you constantly see flags being picked up and flags not being thrown, and to see other quarterbacks getting it for less physical hits, it's taking the fun out of the game," Newton said. "I'm just being honest about that."

Newton already has missed one game with a concussion after a legal helmet-to-helmet hit at Atlanta. He was hit at least four times in the helmet during the opener at Denver, with only one penalty called.

"At times in games, I haven't felt protected by the officials," Newton said. "For me, I'm just trying to bite my tongue, trying to get through the game, because it's frustrating. It's frustrating ... I know people are probably taking what I'm saying out of context, because you have to look back and look at it from my vantage point. I play this game one way; I'm no different than anybody else. I'm just trying to win football games, and whatever I'm asked to do, that's what I'm going to do."

A roughing the passer penalty hasn't been called on the defense facing Newton since the opener at Denver.

On the radio they were saying the main issue is where he landed is basically concrete. Apparently it's an issue that has been brought up before that there is basically a concrete slab way too close to the sideline and they said landing there a bigger issue than the collision

Again, this is just what I heard from a Denver radio sports talk guy, so who knows.

Sounds like he is OK though

I haven't watched all, or even many, of Carolina's games but even just going back to what I remember from the Week 1 opener, I mean yeah, he got mugged in that game big time.

I think it was Boomer or one of the guys on that panel who tried pulling the "he's gotta keep in mind what kind of threat he is to the defense" card and I just don't buy that.

Rules are rules. What is the rule exactly? It seems like he gets hit way more often and way later than other QBs, but I could be wrong. I guess the gold standard is "would that be a penalty against Brady?" and if so, then I think i should be a penalty against anybody.
