Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
MAJOR Dude in the whole "Ex Jock as Broadcaster" paradigm...
His time with Tom Brookshire as his partner "set the bar" for football broadcasting and, (apparently) for being "at the bar"...
I've seen some pretty hilarious reminiscences from those two that were "fueled by fuel"
From wiki:
Describing the pair's on-air rapport, Summerall said, "With Brookie, it was more of a conversation, like two guys in a saloon."
RIP Sir!Comment

Between Summerall's steady, calming commentary and Ebbersol's (sp) "Oh my!"...these are my iconic sounds of football that I will always cherish and remember. Those shoes simply cannot be filled.Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
I'll be more interested in him once he hits that wall of failure (being it not starting, being on a bad team not getting playing time or whatever) and how he responds to that.
Just in working out and losing weight and everything, it's still baby steps and he really hasn't accomplished anything field-worthy yet - he always had the talent and arm for it, it's the mental process that got him down before. Watching out for him just to see how he deals with the next mental hurdles.badComment

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
I just read an interesting article on Bleacher about Godells best and worst moves. One of them that seems to, and always has caused issues with the Rooney Rule. A lot of the comments were saying that the rule needs to be scraped.
I actually agree. The rule is dumb. If there are 10 other coahces out there that are twice as good than say.. Lovie Smith, and those 10 coaches fit into the plans of that team better than Lovie Smith, then why should they be almost forced into interviewing him just becase he is of a different colour. (Trying to avoid being accidently offensive here)
I realise we're past the hiring of coaches now, but I thought I'd bring it up to see what you guys thought. Seems like the rule is almost there to cause more controversey than it would without.
To add to that, despite I never had the pleasure of hearing him call games, being where I live and that, I think even I will miss Pat Summerall. I have watched clips, and even heard him interviewed on ESPN Football Today. Great voice. R.I.P
Oh.. And that story about D.J Hayden.... Dam!
That sums up my topics for today!Comment

Re: NFL Off Topic 2012
I'm personally just sick to death about people whining about the Rooney Rule and/or using it as a crutch for discussions.
MLB has had the rule in place 3 years prior to the NFL but it doesn't have some fancy name attached to it. I couldn't care any less if the rule stayed or went. As a Packer fan, if our entire front office and coaching staff went down in a plane crash, I really don't care if any minorities are on the sidelines/in the booths. If they win and get the job done, that is all that matters.
Here's the thing - the good teams keep a fairly solid coaching staff, without rotating leadership like it's going out of style. See: Ozzie Newsome/Harbaugh with the Ravens, Ted Thompson/McCarthy with the Packers, etc.
Reggie McKenzie was a proven part of the Packers' organization, now he's a minority GM in Oakland. The NFL is so focused on win now, if they still suck he will be gone in 2-3 years. Now what? He won't get another GM job and if he does it will be with a bad team on a tight leash. His record won't be as a winner, so no good teams will think of putting him in that spot.
Lovie Smith has flaws especially concerning QB development. In today's NFL? That's a no-no. It doesn't matter regardless, there have been something like 20-some coaching changes in the past 3 years. Bad decisions all around are being made, race not being any part of that issue.
I'm pretty sure if someone like Dungy were to come back he would field plenty of calls.
The Rooney Rule should stay in place (and should also be updated to other coaching positions) but I am sick of it being a crutch for conversation. Never once in my life have I heard anyone bitch, moan, whine and/or otherwise complain about the same rule that has been in place longer in Baseball.badComment
