    Re: NFL Off Topic 2012

It seems that organization has serious discipline issues from the coach on down. It's almost as if they think they can get away with anything and not pay the consequences.

They have the potential to be a very good team with the personnel they have but if they're that unruly on and off the field than it'll blow up any kind of potential they have. I have a feeling we're going to look back at the Lions 5-6 years from now and going "what if?"

But they understand he has a short shelf life, yet would be tremendously valuable for a team that can win now (like the 49ers).

When Alex Smith used Cam Newton as an example, it was really more of a diss to the Panthers defense last year. The Panthers defense was always giving up so many points last year. So the only they could catch up with their opponent was to force Newton to throw a lot, which would increase the Panthers' chance of creating a turnover.

I watched the video once on NFL Network and most of his response is in this video (http://www.49ers.com/media-gallery/v...0-c0a73b10b995). He was simply giving his honest answer and acted calm when doing so.

          These were Smith's quotes:

"I don't know the league stat is, but check the win/loss ratio on 300 yard passing games. I think it has gotten better as of late, but tradionally if you threw for 300 yards, your chances of winning went down. As a quarterback you have to distribute the football and make your decisions and I think those areas is where you make your money. You make your money on third down and you make your money in the red zone and you got to be good there.

This is the honest truth. I could absolutely care less on yards per game. I think that's a totally overblown stat. Because if you're losing games in the second half, guess what? You're like the Carolina Panthers and you're going no-huddle the entire second half and, yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games, that's great. You're not winning, though."
54% of teams that have thrown for over 300 yards in a game have won. Alex smith also had the worst Red Zone percentage of all starting QB's with 40% last season. Instead of "dissing" the panthers defense he should have gave credit to his defense and special teams which is the main reason they won game last year. There was no reason to throw out Cam Newton's name and as the statistics have shown historically team's are more likely to win a game when throwing for over 300 yards then losing.

It's also funny that a guy who, for the first time in his career, was involved with a team that could be called good wants to get so defensive about the questions surrounding his play. Even before Peyton left the Colts the 49ers tried as hard as they could to find someone to replace him and drafted a quarterback in the 2nd round with the goal of replacing him.

He was crediting his defense. You're choosing to read it as knocking the Panthers D, which is fine unless you're going to try to use it as a way of not crediting his own. The style of play is great for the 9ers bc of the D, which also helps keep Smith from having to try and throw for 300 yards. That's the point he's making. He didn't say "I could toss 300 yards a game if I wanted to, but this system holds me back." He's thankful for not being in the situation Newton was in last year. The team records show clear situations of a QB putting up killer stats not being the solution. It's not a knock on Cam, not a cry for recognition from Smith, or ignoring the impact of the 9ers D on his team. It's just an example of how stats can be deceiving and that the ultimate goal is team success.

If thats the case then he credited his defense using an example of a bad defense, knocking the Panthers D.

I'm basing my points of what he actually said, and I never implied Smith was knocking or not knocking the Panthers defense that was what the quoted poster said, I was simply responding. I can't remember the last time I watched an interview with a starting QB and his response/defense was having another QB's name come out of his mouth. I think you also missed the point that the stats aren't deceiving Smith simply rattled off what made sense in his mind along with Newtons name.

Comments are much ado about nothing if you ask me.

Read the comments and watched the video and not once did he come off as trying to diss Newton or the Panthers in his comments.

Nothing more than a case of people criticizing players for being/sounding honest in their comments.

I'm just looking at last season, but 11 quarterbacks had a higher winning percentage when throwing for 300+ yards and 21 quarterbacks had a higher winning percentage when throwing for under 300 yards. So I think Alex Smith has a point.

And no doubt, Alex Smith in the red zone was terrible. There's a reason why David Akers broked the record for most field goal points in a season. The interviewers should have grilled him about that statistic rather than about passing yards.

I'm sure Smith has a lot of respect for his defense, however the question he was asked was more of a direct shot at him and he wanted to try and prove a point.

The 49ers defense was incredible last season, but I think Alex Smith did his part. He was involved in 6 game winning drives in the 2011 season (5 in the regular season, 1 in the post season), which is the 2nd most in the league last year. He had the 9th highest passer rating in 2011 and took care of the ball by throwing the least amount of interceptions among quarterbacks that have started at least 8 games.

This doesn't make him a franchise quarterback, but overall, he's coming off a very solid season.
