Dont fall for it. This is a bad hire and there's no other way to put it. Sorry to say but you'll see.

Caldwell is probably a nice guy, family man, but he's not a coach.

Richard Sherman sees physical play as "real football":

On Wednesday, Sherman addressed with reporters the value of physicality, especially when the officials seem to be disinclined to repeatedly throw flags when guys are pushing and shoving pass-catchers on a continual basis.
“I think that’s the way the game of football was built,” Sherman said, via quotes distributed by the team. “I think when they came up with the rules and they first built the game and created the game, these rules weren’t in place. [Editor's note: He's right, primarily because when they first built the game and created the game, there was no passing.] The game was allowed to be played physical, and that’s why you had so many run games. That’s an old school brand of football. I don’t know how old the rules are, but since these rules have come, you look up and every receiver, every play they could drop a wide-open pass and turn around and look for a flag. I think that kind of ruins the game. That kind of ruins the intensity, the whole DNA of football and what it is if you see flags every single play.”
While the rules have changed over the past 40 years to encourage more offense and in turn more scoring, Sherman is right about one thing — no one wants to see the game bogged down by penalties. As a result, the Seahawks have discovered the ability to secure a net gain by constantly engaging in illegal contact, holding, and interference. No matter how often it’s called, it’ll never be called every time it happens.
“I think DBs playing physical is the way football should be,” Sherman said. “A lot of people want to see great offense. You see great offense all the time. People running through zones and guys not being able to cover them. We stand up there and have a dogfight every play.”

I mean, that's how it's taught coming up. We ran a cover 2 in HS, and it was fundamental for the CB to not allow a clean release for the WR before sinking into their zone.

They can't allow these specimen WR's run free. They're too fast, too tall, can jump too high. The field has to be leveled somewhat. Make them know they're going to get a big pushback off the line. Make them adjust their release at the snap. Throw off timing.

It's all legal. Get your shots in early, because once they're past that 5 yard zone, they're pretty much free to run.

Sherman runs his mouth off like a madman most of the time but here, he makes perfect sense.

                  Bravo Mr. Sherman.

To be honest with you, probably not. It's one of those things where the officials have a really hard time so they either go crazy calling it or they let it slide.

                      That's the impression I get.

And this has been my argument for awhile when it comes to Seattle's secondary. The law of averages say they wont get flagged everytime they hold a receiver down the field so you take the few penalties when it happens and kill multiple drives and/or plays when it isnt, either way in the end they come out on the positive end of it. Regardless of it bogging the game down they should call it everytime they see it, otherwise just do away with the rule entirely as its completely pointless to call it with little to no consistency. Seattle fans will say they led the league in penalties, which just tells me they would just lead by a wider gap if they actually were flagged for it everytime a hold happened in the secondary.

I applaud Seattle's secondary and how they play. Can't fault them for taking what the league gives them.

I wish we had them in GB and our defense played the same way.

Seattle takes advantage of referees not wanting to call it everytime. Much like holding calls by offenses. Its like a ref will give leeway for a while then call a make up flag to pull the reigns in a bit, then it continues.

More teams should be like Seattle in that respect. Eventually your team builds a rep as a stellar secondary and refs hold the flags even more because of it.

Or it's Carroll skirting with the edge of the rules.

Actually what makes it really work is Earl Thomas' great range and this year, the pass rush.

It's not Seattle's job to throw the flags…if the refs don't fire the flags, I'd keep doing it too.
