    Re: NFL Off Topic

I don't care one way or another on the FG thing since I'm more of a "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" kinda guy.

But if they did change it, they can do what the XFL did.

No PAT (point after touchdown) kicks[edit]
After touchdowns there were no extra point kicks, due to the XFL's perception that an extra point kick was a "guaranteed point." To earn a point after a touchdown, teams ran a single offensive down from the two-yard line (functionally identical to the NFL/NCAA/CFL two-point conversion), but for just a single point. By the playoffs, two-point and three-point conversions had been added to the rules. Teams could opt for the bonus points by playing the conversion farther back from the goal line.
This rule, as originally implemented, was similar to the WFL's "Action Point," and was identical to a 1968 experiment by the NFL and American Football League, used only in preseason interleague games that year.

So Brandon Jacobs pulled a Brandon Jacobs today

Jacobs on John Harbaugh 49ers coach (Jacob's former coach):

“He is a bitch, and that’s why he’s never won anything,” Jacobs said. “It is what it is. I’ve got two rings. Harbaugh, though, he’s a bitch. So it doesn’t matter.”

Just when I said the guy matured after this horrific Giants season he goes and does this. The guy is and always will be a talking trash can.

Jacobs is a bitch because he's the biggest dude around and was never a good RB in the NFL.

If he had a shred of the actual talent of the other RB's in the league, with that physique, he would've been untouchable.

Harbaugh could be a bitch though, so I guess it takes one to know one.

Doesn't surprise me in the least, he was inactive for nearly that entire season, complained to the media, was suspended and then off he went at the end of the season. I've never heard any player say anything negative about Harbaugh who is or was on the team so take it for what it is, Jacobs has an ego and was pissed he signed there only to be left inactive every week.

I am not sure how we define "Broken" in this context. But the major reason we all watch and play sports is the uncertainty of the outcome. Is there anything in the world of sport that is more of a sure thing than the PAT in football? So from that perspective, it is kind of "Broken". I don't think they need to do anything radical. Just raise the difficulty enough to make it interesting to watch.

                Well put.

I think there are a lot of issues surrounding the game that are more glaring (officiating, the concussion problem, how fines are handed out, etc) that has people questioning why the NFL is trying to "fix something that isn't broken" when there are many other things that are.

Im on team remove the extra point and just make TDs 7 points. However you'd have to eliminate 2 point conversions. Can't have teams changing the value of the TD just so they can get more points. That doesnt make sense to me.

So imo you either have TDs equal 7 points and no 8 point possibility, or you leave the extra point(s) try the way it is now. Its not the leagues fault coaches are too chicken **** to ever go for two.

As big as he was Jacobs should have been Christian Okoye Tecmo Super Bowl version unstoppable. Instead he's out there getting arm tackled by cornerbacks he outweighs by 130 pounds.

Tiki Barber poisoned Brandon Jacobs. That said, Jacobs was just too big for his position. Thats why hes already retiring.

It's not like 1-2 people are the bottleneck for the issues you cite and this proposal takes away from those issues. The competition committee cant renegotiate the CBA to change the fine schedules, structure, etc (which is fine imo). Officiating is being addressed at multiple levels from simplification to continued tweaking and enforcement of player safety rules to the full time officials program.

I'm not big on just making TDs 7 points, but I'm totally on board for shortening the goal posts or bringing the PAT attempt back 10-15 yards, or even 20, whatever they decided. Hell I wouldn't even be against the XFL bit Matrix posted with varying extra point values based on distance, no kicking. Like a 3 point conversion from 35 yards out or something. Virtually impossible and not all that much shorter than hail mary distance, but it would definitely crank up the "no lead is safe" adage.

Side note, holy **** I'm so tired of coaches/athletes saying "it is what it is". Drives me crazy!

I'm sure there'll be a thread on the game (or not) but who's coaching the Pro Bowl teams? Are Rice and Sanders actually coaching their teams?
