I don't get his beef with Crabtree. Seems like it just came out of nowhere in the NFC championship game. Maybe I missed it but I never recall those two getting into it in previous games.

Sometimes I think he's just trying to promote the hawk/niner rivalry to a ridiculous level.

It's the byproduct of the league only marketing guys named Brady and Manning. Guys like Sherman have to take on these larger than life characters to draw any mainstream attention. He was a guest at the white house correspondence dinner based off that post game interview, not the season he and his team just had.

Yes, the entire football world knows who Richard Sherman is, but outside of that group...?

There is other social commentary that would fit here but keeping it TOS friendly.

After learning more about Sherman as a person outside of the ridiculous persona he's had to adopt I agree with you. This is all very calculated to get his name out there and be a big name beyond the football community. So long as he doesn't say anything TOO inflammatory or cursing out people in public than let him be.

I also agree that the league's PR department really does focus on the QBs to such an extent that it's created this situation to one degree or another.

It's confusing because outside of his continued trash talking in NFL circles, he already is a good role model.

Sherman went from growing up in a hard section of Compton, CA to graduating from Stanford University with a 3.9 GPA to a multi-million dollar contract in the NFL following a championship season. He's obviously worked hard for everything he has; he's not a superior athletic talent like, say, Deion Sanders or Champ Bailey were. He hasn't forgotten his roots, as he regularly goes back to Compton to help support youth education efforts there and he's active with his youth foundation which provides clothing and school supplies to children in impoverished families.

It's a weird juxtaposition, the on-the-field Richard Sherman vs the off-the-field Richard Sherman, certainly.

True, and it is working. But as smart as he is, I wish he took a different angle at getting his name out there more.

Agreed, Sherman should be getting propped up as a legit role model for youngsters everywhere. He is a product of his own hard work and taking in all the advice and coaching a young man needs to develop himself.

With that said, this "character" he plays is really not helping. He is essentially perpetuating many negative black stereotypes that a man of his intelligence should be erasing. The public will never know he's an intelligent, thoughtful human being when the only headlines he makes is for yelling trash talk into microphones, calling out vendettas/grudges against other players, using improper language ("choke out"... really?), and walking into traps the media sets up for him.

With that said, I'm not a fan of the Richard Sherman, but I am a fan of what he has accomplished for himself and proof that hard work + dedication pays off.

I'm not really a fan of Sherman, but I respect him. He's no dummy. He knows what he's doing, and it's working quite well for him.

For his sake, he better hope there was error or a mistake with his testing.

Redskins on the other hand need to go ahead and just cut bait now.

I agree with most of what you are saying except the part about him playing into negative stereotypes. To me, he is just being who he is. It also gives him an edge, which I think he needs because he is not an exceptional athlete as someone already mentioned.

As long as he is balling out on the field, and still being a positive role model, as everyone is saying, it's pure entertainment. The minute he stops being who he is and drops his not confident but cocky attitude, he becames another McNabb.

Btw I can't stand Sherman at times, but I understand and hopes he never changes.

If true he is absolutely done. He got so many chances while with the Bucs. What a waste of talent.
