    Re: NFL Off Topic 2012

He was talking about only the front seven, and I'm basing my opinion on their play last season through today under the new coaching staff. If that unit continues to play like they have, I think that they are definitely in the conversation for "best front seven in the last 6-7 years". When you think about it, that's quite an arbitrary category isn't it?

I wasn't really disputing what you said... just introducing something we can talk about since I really don't think there is a discussion about a defense being that good after 2 games. Last year was last year. Unless we're saying last year's front 7 is the best then it's not fair to include anything that happened then besides to say "If..."

Not sure it being the front 7 vs the entire defense changes anything. If we were talking about only one player then maybe. Unless the front 7 is the exact same group as last year?

I was under the impression that it pretty much is. Niner fans can chime in if that's not true.

All 11 starters came back this year, with Haralson being injured in the pre-season,with Aldon Smith, who had 14 sacks last year, taking his spot. Smith was going to start anyways, but you get what I'm saying. My reasoning behind saying this is the best front 7 in quite some time is pretty simple. They dictate to the offense how they can play against them every game, along with the ridiculous amount of talent and coaching they have. Justin Smith made All-Pro at both DE and DT last year. Patrick Willis is generally considered the gold standard at LB in todays NFL, and in my opinion, coming from someone who watches every 49ers game, NaVorro Bowman has been the better player in the last season and 2 games this year. Not to take anything away from Willis, that's how good Bowman is. Not only are they both stout against the run, but SF uses them a ton in coverage on the TE and even against slot receivers. Nobody goes sideline to sideline like Willis, except his clone, Bowman. Aldon Smith nearly broke the rookie sack record last year, and he was only a situational player. Ray Mcdonald and Isaac Sopoaga are both near Pro Bowl level players and Ahmaad Brooks is no slouch. If you spend much time watching this team, it becomes apparent pretty quickly just how much they dictate and dominate, every game.

Edit: I forgot to add the fact that aside from Justin Smith, everyone else in the front 7 and defense as a whole, really, are in or before their prime, and Justin Smith isn't showing any signs of slowing down.

It's a series on NFL Network called, "A Football Life." A few days ago was Ray Lewis and next week is Tom Coughlin, I believe. If they make a DVD collection, I'm buying.

Nice video about Willis and Bowman. I knew they both made All Pro last year, but I didn't realize it was the first time 2 MLB's from the same team both did since the merger. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-films-...se-never-rests

I'm definitely interested in watching the Coughlin one.

He just seems like a fascinating guy and a damn good coach.

Are the Ryan brothers identical twins? Just saw an interview with Rob with a trimmed beard and thought it was Rex before I turned the volume up and heard Cowboys.

The 9ners are good but Im on team Steelers. Its too early to label them this season.

Interesting because all the analysts are complaining that they're missing pass interference calls way too much.

Having them all back definitely makes a difference. And they have a strong case anyway... but it's still 2 weeks in. I think your comment was fine in the context of the game thread. But if we're really going to break it down, it wouldn't be fair to until the season is over. Nobody crowns paper champs. They have the potential though.

They have. They've called a ton of PI's illegal contact also. I think defenders are taking advantage and trying to get away with a lot more... bc it's working.
