Seems like the players around the league are viewing him is a Dictator, rather then a commissioner.
Bah, I can see the case for him not being consistent on punishments but I think it's refreshing that there's a commish out there that's willing to be a hard *** rather than molly coddle the players to their heart's content. It's whats happened to the NBA which has turned into a case where the inmates are running the asylum with superstar players virtually getting coaches and management fired on a whim. The situation isn't so bad in baseball or the NHL but let's face it, professional athletes are treated like a precious commodity when they should be treated by their words and actions.

Well the players are a precious commodity STPO. I appreciate that Goodell takes action but sometimes he goes overboard and has created an aura of invulnerability and absolution to his position.

I think he has overstepped his bounds a bit but let's remember that he's also an employee of the owners. If owners don't like how heavy handed he's become or will become then they can throw him on his ear. It's what happened to Fay Vincent which more or less opened the doors for Bud Selig to become commissioner of MLB a few years afterwards.

So it's not just a Goodell/players thing. If anything, players should start harping at ownership for allowing Goodell to carry on the way he does.

Sunday Night Football becomes first sports series to finish year with highest TV ratings.

The NFL has announced that NBC’s Sunday Night Football was the most-watched show for the 2011-12 season, besting FOX’s American Idol.

Goodell hasn't done a single thing to upset the owners. How can the players complain to their bosses that Goodell is unfair in favor of those bosses? Owners would be pretty dumb to make a change at Goodells position for the sake of the players. Goodell works for them in every single way.

The only thing I can think of that Goodell has done to upset the owners(aka his employers) is the punishing of the Cowboys and Redskins which only won him points with 30 other owners...

Oh I agree that in that position being firm is required and you cannot coddle the players and let them off easy if they violate league rules. Also I don't think the Owners will start to get on Goodell anytime soon, as long as the NFL's popularity continues to sky rocket, and TV ratings go through the roof.

I will say this though. Goodell just seems like a big hypocrite. He keeps harping on, and on about Player Safety, but yet he's in favor of extending the regular season to 18 games? In such a grueling, and physically demanding sport that should in theory increase the number of Injuries, and player fatigue. The bottom line for Goodell is revenue, I just think deep behind that hard *** act he's putting on he's all about the $$$.

Well said, I think that's pretty much my opinion with a few minor differences.

As to my comment about players complaining to the owners it's more of a situation of saying: "we find Goodell to be a dictator so we're not going to play our best or even walk off the field to make our point" kind of thing.

Goodell seems to be a bit hipocritical especially as it concerns safety issues but he's trying to maximize profit which is just crazy as the product is almost at the point of over saturation.

People take the headlines and just stop reading or don't bother to consider them beyond face value though, like the above. A lot has been done to reduce the wear and tear on players, so it's disingenuous to dismiss his efforts to accomplish that and then dump on an 18 game season because of how grueling the year is.

Owners are happy, which is why his contract was extended through 2018 in January.

I am looking forward to when all the BS and politics falls to the side and we get 2 more meaningful games per season. Before that happens they'll continue to adjust and tweak things in the name of player safety... and the players and NFLPA will continue to fight it, and then sue when they're retired and say the NFL didn't do enough to keep them safe.

Alex Smith puts his foot in his mouth, Jon Beason fires back!

Alex Smith raised some eyebrows this week when he used Cam Newton as an example of how great statistics from a quarterback don't always translate to wins.

Jon Beason's point is completely invalidated for his stupid freakin' use of "hate on".

So dumb. He's not "hating on" Cam Newton, he's bringing him up as an example for his very true point that Cam was great at racking up stats but unfortunately the wins werent there whether his fault or not. (obviously not his fault)

I say it way too much but this whole "hating on" thing has GOT to stop.

Also proving Smith's point is this:

Can Newton passing yards per game:

                        Wins: 190.8
                        Losses: 290.5

That was taken from the comments on PFT, so I hope they are correct!

I caught the actual interview this morning, Smith was generalizing very defensively about how big passing yards don't matter and it doesn't win games. Then he specifically called out Cam Newton whom I'm not a fan off but thought it was unprofessional on Smiths part. This was followed up by NFL.com analysts bringing up certain QB's which the top five have a very high Win/Loss ratio when they throw for over 300 yards.

For a guy who was going to be replaced by a player who may or may not ever reach peak form and is old, Smith probably should have toned his comments down a little.

"Liquored up Kicker" grips up a middle school student for taunting him.

"According to the police report, a student was taunting Vanderjagt by yelling “wide left, wide left,” and Vanderjagt walked up to him, grabbed him by the throat and started cursing at him. "

Former NFL kicker Mike Vanderjagt has been suspended from his middle school coaching job after he was accused of grabbing and screaming at a student, apparently because the child taunted Vanderjagt over his missed field goal in the Colts' loss to the Steelers in the 2005 playoffs.
